The symbol transition density in a digitally modulated signal affects the performance of practical synchronization schemes designed for timing recovery. This paper focuses on the derivation of simple performance limits for the estimation of the time delay of a noisy linearly modulated signal in the presence of various degrees of symbol correlation produced by the varioustransition densities in the symbol streams. The paper develops high- and low-signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) approximations of the so-called (Gaussian) unconditional Cramér–Rao bound (UCRB),as well as general expressions that are applicable in all ranges of SNR. The derived bounds are valid only for the class of quadratic, non-data-aided (NDA) timing recovery schemes. To illustrate the validity of the derived bounds, they are compared with the actual performance achieved by some well-known quadratic NDA timing recovery schemes. The impact of the symbol transitiondensity on the classical threshold effect present in NDA timing recovery schemes is also analyzed. Previous work on performancebounds for timing recovery from various authors is generalized and unified in this contribution.

The well-known structure of an array combiner along with a maximum likelihood sequence estimator (MLSE) receiveris the basis for the derivation of a space-time processor presentinggood properties in terms of co-channel and intersymbol interferencerejection. The use of spatial diversity at the receiver front-endtogether with a scalar MLSE implies a joint design of the spatialcombiner and the impulse response for the sequence detector. Thisis faced using the MMSE criterion under the constraint that thedesired user signal power is not cancelled, yielding an impulse responsefor the sequence detector that is matched to the channel andcombiner response. The procedure maximizes the signal-to-noiseratio at the input of the detector and exhibits excellent performancein realistic multipath channels.

This correspondence addresses the problem of nondata-aidedwaveform estimation for digital communications. Based on the unconditionalmaximum likelihood criterion, the main contribution of this correspondenceis the derivation of a closed-form solution to the waveform estimationproblem in the low signal-to-noise ratio regime. The proposed estimationmethod is based on the second-order statistics of the received signaland a clear link is established between maximum likelihood estimation andcorrelation matching techniques. Compression with the signal-subspace isalso proposed to improve the robustness against the noise and to mitigatethe impact of abnormals or outliers.

In numerical linear algebra, students encounter earlythe iterative power method, which finds eigenvectors of a matrixfrom an arbitrary starting point through repeated normalizationand multiplications by the matrix itself. In practice, more sophisticatedmethods are used nowadays, threatening to make the powermethod a historical and pedagogic footnote. However, in the contextof communication over a time-division duplex (TDD) multipleinputmultiple-output (MIMO) channel, the power method takes aspecial position. It can be viewed as an intrinsic part of the uplinkand downlink communication switching, enabling estimationof the eigenmodes of the channel without extra overhead. Generalizingthe method to vector subspaces, communication in thesubspaces with the best receive and transmit signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) is made possible. In exploring this intrinsic subspace convergence(ISC), we show that several published and new schemes canbe cast into a common framework where all members benefit fromthe ISC.

Erilaisia epäpuhtauksia kulkeutuu paperinvalmistusprosessiin ja monenlaisia saostumia muodostuu paperinvalmistuksen prosesseissa. Epäpuhtaudet voivat aiheuttaa prosessiongelmia sekä alentaa tuotteen laatua. Epäpuhtauksien alkuperän ja koostumuksen selvittäminen edellyttää usein erilaisten analyysimenetelmien käyttöä. Epäpuhtauksien luokittelu on useasti välttämätöntä ennen tarkempaa kemiallista analyysia. Paperinvalmistuksen epäpuhtauksien kvalitatiiviseen luokitteluun on yleisimmin käytetty mikroskopian, IR-spektroskopian ja analyyttisen pyrolyysin menetelmiä. Raman spektroskopia on harvinaisempi menetelmä paperiteollisuuden tutkimuksessa. Raman instrumenttien kehittyminen on ollut voimakasta viimeisen vuosikymmenen aikana. Raman spektroskopia onkin osoittanut mandollisuutensa polymeerien, lääketeollisuuden ja polttoaineteollisuuden tutkimuksissa. Tässä työssä tutkittiin erään elintarvikepakkauskartongin epäpuhtauksia Raman spektroskoopilla. Työn tavoitteena oli selvittää Raman analyysin käyttökelpoisuutta kartongin epäpuhtauksien online-luokittelussa. Tutkimukset suoritettiin Spectracoden RP-1 Raman instrumentilla.

In order to compare coronary magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) data obtained with different scanning methodologies, adequate visualization and presentation of the coronary MRA data need to be ensured. Furthermore, an objective quantitative comparison between images acquired with different scanning methods is desirable. To address this need, a software tool ("Soap-Bubble") that facilitates visualization and quantitative comparison of 3D volume targeted coronary MRA data was developed. In the present implementation, the user interactively specifies a curved subvolume (enclosed in the 3D coronary MRA data set) that closely encompasses the coronary arterial segments. With a 3D Delaunay triangulation and a parallel projection, this enables the simultaneous display of multiple coronary segments in one 2D representation. For objective quantitative analysis, frequently explored quantitative parameters such as signal-to-noise ratio (SNR); contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR); and vessel length, sharpness, and diameter can be assessed. The present tool supports visualization and objective, quantitative comparisons of coronary MRA data obtained with different scanning methods. The first results obtained in healthy adults and in patients with coronary artery disease are presented.

Many biological specimens do not arrange themselves in ordered assemblies (tubular or flat 2D crystals) suitable for electron crystallography, nor in perfectly ordered 3D crystals for X-ray diffraction; many other are simply too large to be approached by NMR spectroscopy. Therefore, single-particles analysis has become a progressively more important technique for structural determination of large isolated macromolecules by cryo-electron microscopy. Nevertheless, the low signal-to-noise ratio and the high electron-beam sensitivity of biological samples remain two main resolution-limiting factors, when the specimens are observed in their native state. Cryo-negative staining is a recently developed technique that allows the study of biological samples with the electron microscope. The samples are observed at low temperature, in the vitrified state, but in presence of a stain (ammonium molybdate). In the present work, the advantages of this novel technique are investigated: it is shown that cryo-negative staining can generally overcome most of the problems encountered with cryo-electron microscopy of vitrified native suspension of biological particles. The specimens are faithfully represented with a 10-times higher SNR than in the case of unstained samples. Beam-damage is found to be considerably reduced by comparison of multiple-exposure series of both stained and unstained samples. The present report also demonstrates that cryo-negative staining is capable of high- resolution analysis of biological macromolecules. The vitrified stain solution surrounding the sample does not forbid the access to the interna1 features (ie. the secondary structure) of a protein. This finding is of direct interest for the structural biologist trying to combine electron microscopy and X-ray data. developed electron microscopy technique. Finally, several application examples demonstrate the advantages of this newly

Multispectral images contain information from several spectral wavelengths and currently multispectral images are widely used in remote sensing and they are becoming more common in the field of computer vision and in industrial applications. Typically, one multispectral image in remote sensing may occupy hundreds of megabytes of disk space and several this kind of images may be received from a single measurement. This study considers the compression of multispectral images. The lossy compression is based on the wavelet transform and we compare the suitability of different waveletfilters for the compression. A method for selecting a wavelet filter for the compression and reconstruction of multispectral images is developed. The performance of the multidimensional wavelet transform based compression is compared to other compression methods like PCA, ICA, SPIHT, and DCT/JPEG. The quality of the compression and reconstruction is measured by quantitative measures like signal-to-noise ratio. In addition, we have developed a qualitative measure, which combines the information from the spatial and spectral dimensions of a multispectral image and which also accounts for the visual quality of the bands from the multispectral images.

Position sensitive particle detectors are needed in high energy physics research. This thesis describes the development of fabrication processes and characterization techniques of silicon microstrip detectors used in the work for searching elementary particles in the European center for nuclear research, CERN. The detectors give an electrical signal along the particles trajectory after a collision in the particle accelerator. The trajectories give information about the nature of the particle in the struggle to reveal the structure of the matter and the universe. Detectors made of semiconductors have a better position resolution than conventional wire chamber detectors. Silicon semiconductor is overwhelmingly used as a detector material because of its cheapness and standard usage in integrated circuit industry. After a short spread sheet analysis of the basic building block of radiation detectors, the pn junction, the operation of a silicon radiation detector is discussed in general. The microstrip detector is then introduced and the detailed structure of a double-sided ac-coupled strip detector revealed. The fabrication aspects of strip detectors are discussedstarting from the process development and general principles ending up to the description of the double-sided ac-coupled strip detector process. Recombination and generation lifetime measurements in radiation detectors are discussed shortly. The results of electrical tests, ie. measuring the leakage currents and bias resistors, are displayed. The beam test setups and the results, the signal to noise ratio and the position accuracy, are then described. It was found out in earlier research that a heavy irradiation changes the properties of radiation detectors dramatically. A scanning electron microscope method was developed to measure the electric potential and field inside irradiated detectorsto see how a high radiation fluence changes them. The method and the most important results are discussed shortly.

PURPOSE: To optimize and preliminarily evaluate a three-dimensional (3D) radial balanced steady-state free precession (bSSFP) arterial spin labeled (ASL) sequence for nonenhanced MR angiography (MRA) of the extracranial carotid arteries. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The carotid arteries of 13 healthy subjects and 2 patients were imaged on a 1.5 Tesla MRI system using an undersampled 3D radial bSSFP sequence providing a scan time of ∼4 min and 1 mm(3) isotropic resolution. A hybridized scheme that combined pseudocontinuous and pulsed ASL was used to maximize arterial coverage. The impact of a post label delay period, the sequence repetition time, and radiofrequency (RF) energy configuration of pseudocontinuous labeling on the display of the carotid arteries was assessed with contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) measurements. Faster, higher undersampled 2 and 1 min scans were tested. RESULTS: Using hybridized ASL MRA and a 3D radial bSSFP trajectory, arterial CNR was maximized with a post label delay of 0.2 s, repetition times ≥ 2.5 s (P < 0.05), and by eliminating RF energy during the pseudocontinuous control phase (P < 0.001). With higher levels of undersampling, the carotid arteries were displayed in ≤ 2 min. CONCLUSION: Nonenhanced MRA using hybridized ASL with a 3D radial bSSFP trajectory can display long lengths of the carotid arteries with 1 mm(3) isotropic resolution. J. Magn. Reson. PURPOSE: To preliminarily test the hypothesis that fluorine 19 ((19)F) magnetic resonance (MR) imaging enables the noninvasive in vivo identification of plaque inflammation in a mouse model of atherosclerosis, with histologic findings as the reference standard. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The animal studies were approved by the local animal ethics committee. Perfluorocarbon (PFC) emulsions were injected intravenously in a mouse model of atherosclerosis (n = 13), after which (19)F and anatomic MR imaging were performed at the level of the thoracic aorta and its branches at 9.4 T. Four of these animals were imaged repeatedly (at 2-14 days) to determine the optimal detection time. Repeated-measures analysis of variance with a Tukey test was applied to determine if there was a significant change in (19)F signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the plaques and liver between the time points. Six animals were injected with a PFC emulsion that also contained a fluorophore. As a control against false-positive results, wild-type mice (n = 3) were injected with a PFC emulsion, and atherosclerotic mice were injected with a saline solution (n = 2). The animals were sacrificed after the last MR imaging examination, after which high-spatial-resolution ex vivo MR imaging and bright-field and immunofluorescent histologic examination were performed. RESULTS: (19)F MR signal was detected in vivo in plaques in the aortic arch and its branches. The SNR was found to significantly increase up to day 6 (P < .001), and the SNR of all mice at this time point was 13.4 ± 3.3. The presence of PFC and plaque in the excised vessels was then confirmed both through ex vivo (19)F MR imaging and histologic examination, while no signal was detected in the control animals. Immunofluorescent histologic findings confirmed the presence of PFC in plaque macrophages. CONCLUSION: (19)F MR imaging allows the noninvasive in vivo detection of inflammation in atherosclerotic plaques in a mouse model of atherosclerosis and opens up new avenues for both the early detection of vulnerable atherosclerosis and the elucidation of inflammation mechanisms in atherosclerosis.

In this paper we design and develop several filtering strategies for the analysis of data generated by a resonant bar gravitational wave (GW) antenna, with the goal of assessing the presence (or absence) therein of long-duration monochromatic GW signals, as well as the eventual amplitude and frequency of the signals, within the sensitivity band of the detector. Such signals are most likely generated in the fast rotation of slightly asymmetric spinning stars. We develop practical procedures, together with a study of their statistical properties, which will provide us with useful information on the performance of each technique. The selection of candidate events will then be established according to threshold-crossing probabilities, based on the Neyman-Pearson criterion. In particular, it will be shown that our approach, based on phase estimation, presents a better signal-to-noise ratio than does pure spectral analysis, the most common approach.

CORONARY artery magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has the potential to provide the cardiologist with relevant diagnostic information relative to coronary artery disease of patients. The major challenge of cardiac MRI, though, is dealing with all sources of motions that can corrupt the images affecting the diagnostic information provided. The current thesis, thus, focused on the development of new MRI techniques that change the standard approach to cardiac motion compensation in order to increase the efficiency of cardioavscular MRI, to provide more flexibility and robustness, new temporal information and new tissue information. The proposed approaches help in advancing coronary magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) in the direction of an easy-to-use and multipurpose tool that can be translated to the clinical environment. The first part of the thesis focused on the study of coronary artery motion through gold standard imaging techniques (x-ray angiography) in patients, in order to measure the precision with which the coronary arteries assume the same position beat after beat (coronary artery repositioning). We learned that intervals with minimal coronary artery repositioning occur in peak systole and in mid diastole and we responded with a new pulse sequence (T2~post) that is able to provide peak-systolic imaging. Such a sequence was tested in healthy volunteers and, from the image quality comparison, we learned that the proposed approach provides coronary artery visualization and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) comparable with the standard acquisition approach, but with increased signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The second part of the thesis explored a completely new paradigm for whole- heart cardiovascular MRI. The proposed techniques acquires the data continuously (free-running), instead of being triggered, thus increasing the efficiency of the acquisition and providing four dimensional images of the whole heart, while respiratory self navigation allows for the scan to be performed in free breathing. This enabling technology allows for anatomical and functional evaluation in four dimensions, with high spatial and temporal resolution and without the need for contrast agent injection. The enabling step is the use of a golden-angle based 3D radial trajectory, which allows for a continuous sampling of the k-space and a retrospective selection of the timing parameters of the reconstructed dataset. The free-running 4D acquisition was then combined with a compressed sensing reconstruction algorithm that further increases the temporal resolution of the 4D dataset, while at the same time increasing the overall image quality by removing undersampling artifacts. The obtained 4D images provide visualization of the whole coronary artery tree in each phases of the cardiac cycle and, at the same time, allow for the assessment of the cardiac function with a single free- breathing scan. The quality of the coronary arteries provided by the frames of the free-running 4D acquisition is in line with the one obtained with the standard ECG-triggered one, and the cardiac function evaluation matched the one measured with gold-standard stack of 2D cine approaches. Finally, the last part of the thesis focused on the development of ultrashort echo time (UTE) acquisition scheme for in vivo detection of calcification in the coronary arteries. Recent studies showed that UTE imaging allows for the coronary artery plaque calcification ex vivo, since it is able to detect the short T2 components of the calcification. The heart motion, though, prevented this technique from being applied in vivo. An ECG-triggered self-navigated 3D radial triple- echo UTE acquisition has then been developed and tested in healthy volunteers. The proposed sequence combines a 3D self-navigation approach with a 3D radial UTE acquisition enabling data collection during free breathing. Three echoes are simultaneously acquired to extract the short T2 components of the calcification while a water and fat separation technique allows for proper visualization of the coronary arteries. Even though the results are still preliminary, the proposed sequence showed great potential for the in vivo visualization of coronary artery calcification. In conclusion, the thesis presents three novel MRI approaches aimed at improved characterization and assessment of atherosclerotic coronary artery disease. These approaches provide new anatomical and functional information in four dimensions, and support tissue characterization for coronary artery plaques.

The semiconductor particle detectors used at CERN experiments are exposed to radiation. Under radiation, the formation of lattice defects is unavoidable. The defects affect the depletion voltage and leakage current of the detectors, and hence affect on the signal-to-noise ratio of the detectors. This shortens the operational lifetime of the detectors. For this reason, the understanding of the formation and the effects of radiation induced defects is crucial for the development of radiation hard detectors. In this work, I have studied the effects of radiation induced defects-mostly vacancy related defects-with a simulation package, Silvaco. Thus, this work essentially concerns the effects of radiation induced defects, and native defects, on leakage currents in particle detectors. Impurity donor atom-vacancy complexes have been proved to cause insignificant increase of leakage current compared with the trivacancy and divacancy-oxygen centres. Native defects and divacancies have proven to cause some of the leakage current, which is relatively small compared with trivacancy and divacancy-oxygen.
