An attempt has been made to review current information on the microscopic thermodynamics of liquid alloys. For complex alloys, and for alloys of simple metals with strong "compound-forming" tendencies, the fluctuation approach developed by Bhatia and his co-workers provides a useful link between the fluctuation in concentration and number density of atoms in the mixture on the one hand, and macroscopic thermodynamic properties on the other. Some selected examples of the application of structural data of liquid alloys to estimating macroscopic thermodynamic properties such as the Gibbs free energy of mixing, coupled with the fluctuation approach are given. The relevant thermodynamic quantities such as vapor pressure and entropy are also discussed, to facilitate the understanding of the present status of the fundamental and powerful links between macroscopic and microscopic (atomic scale) structure of liquid alloys (Mg--Sn, Li--Pb, Hg--K). 63 ref.--AA

The activity of strontium in liquid Al-Sr alloys (X(Sr) less-than-or-equal-to 0.17) at 1323 K has been determined using the Knudsen effusion-mass loss technique. At higher concentrations (X(Sr) greater-than-or-equal-to 0.28), the activity of strontium has been determined by the pseudoisopiestic technique. Activity of aluminium has been derived by Gibbs-Duhem integration. The concentration - concentration structure factor of Bhatia and Thornton at zero wave vector has been computed from the thermodynamic data. The behaviour of the mean square thermal fluctuation in composition and the thermodynamic mixing functions suggest association tendencies in the liquid state. The associated solution model with Al2Sr as the predominant complex can account for the properties of the liquid alloy. Thermodynamic data for the intermetallic compunds in the Al-Sr system have been derived using the phase diagram and the Gibbs' energy and enthalpy of mixing of liquid alloys. The data indicate the need for redetermination of the phase diagram near the strontium-rich corner.

The phase relations in the system Dy–Mg–Cl at 1073 K have been established by isothermal equilibration and chemical analysis of quenched samples. Liquid Mg-rich alloy was found to be in equilibrium with molten DyCl2. Therefore, DyCl2 can be synthesized by reduction of MgCl2 with excess of metallic Dy at 1073 K. The Gibbs energy of formation of DyCl2 at 1073 K was evaluated by two different methods. From voltammetric determination of decomposition voltage, the upper limit for the standard Gibbs energy of formation of DyCl2 was estimated to be −505(±20) kJ mol−1. A value of −543(±10) kJ mol−1 was deduced from phase relations using Gibbs–Duhem integration. The value for the standard Gibbs energy of DyCl2 indicates that the Dy2+ ion has a potential capability for reducing TiCl4 to metal titanium. At the same time, Mg is a reductant for Dy3+ produced during the reduction of TiCl4. Thus, it is thermodynamically confirmed that reduction of TiCl4 by magnesium using a reaction mediator in the salt phase is feasible.

For some new applications of metals in functional devices, metals of high purity are required. In recent years, many high-purity metals have been produced commercially for use in electronics, but the demand for ultra-high-purity metals is increasing rapidly because of more stringent specifications for materials used in high-performance information devices.

Although Al(1-x)Ga(x)N semiconductors are used in lighting, displays and high-power amplifiers, there is no experimental thermodynamic information on nitride solid solutions. Thermodynamic data are useful for assessing the intrinsic stability of the solid solution with respect to phase separation and extrinsic stability in relation to other phases such as metallic contacts. The activity of GaN in Al(1-x)Ga(x)N solid solution is determined at 1100 K using a solid-state electrochemical cell: Ga + Al(1-x)Ga(x)N/Fe, Ca(3)N(2)//CaF(2)//Ca(3)N(2), N(2) (0.1 MPa), Fe. The solid-state cell is based on single crystal CaF(2) as the electrolyte and Ca(3)N(2) as the auxiliary electrode to convert the nitrogen chemical potential established by the equilibrium between Ga and Al(1-x)Ga(x)N solid solution into an equivalent fluorine potential. Excess Gibbs free energy of mixing of the solid solution is computed from the results. Results suggest an unusual mixing behavior: a mild tendency for ordering at three discrete compositions (x = 0.25, 0.5 and 0.75) superimposed on predominantly positive deviation from ideality. The lattice parameters exhibit slight deviation from Vegard's law, with the a-parameter showing positive and the c-parameter negative deviation. Although the solid solution is stable in the full range of compositions at growth temperatures, thermodynamic instability is indicated at temperatures below 410 K in the composition range 0.26 <= x <= 0.5. At 355 K, two biphasic regions appear, with terminal solid solutions stable only for 0 <= x <= 0.26 and 0.66 <= x <= 1. The range of terminal solid solubility reduces with decreasing temperature. We study thermodynamics of an ideal gas in doubly special relativity. A new type of special functions (which we call ``incomplete modified Bessel functions'') emerge. We obtain a series solution for the partition function and derive thermodynamic quantities. We observe that doubly special relativity thermodynamics is nonperturbative in the special relativity and massless limits. A stiffer equation of state is found.

Accelerated aging experiments have been conducted on a representative oil-pressboard insulation model to investigate the effect of constant and sequential stresses on the PD behavior using a built-in phase resolved partial discharge analyzer. A cycle of the applied voltage starting from the zero of the positive half cycle was divided into 16 equal phase windows (Φ1 to Φ16) and partial discharge (PD) magnitude distribution in each phase was determined. Based on the experimental results, three stages of aging mechanism were identified. Gumbel's extreme value distribution of the largest element was used to model the first stage of aging process. Second and subsequent stages were modeled using two-parameter Weibull distribution. Spearman's non-parametric rank correlation test statistic and Kolmogrov-Smirnov two sample test were used to relate the aging process of each phase with the corresponding process of the full cycle. To bring out clearly the effect of stress level, its duration and test procedure on the distribution parameters and hence of the aging process, non-parametric ANOVA techniques like Kruskal-Wallis and Fisher's LSD multiple comparison tests were used. Results of the analysis show that two phases (Φ13 and Φ14) near the vicinity of the negative voltage peak were found to contribute significantly to the aging process and their aging mechanism also correlated well with that of the corresponding full cycle mechanism. Attempts have been made to relate these results with the published work of other workers

We report a universal large deviation behavior of spatially averaged global injected power just before the rejuvenation of the jammed state formed by an aging suspension of laponite clay under an applied stress. The probability distribution function (PDF) of these entropy consuming strongly non-Gaussian fluctuations follow an universal large deviation functional form described by the generalized Gumbel (GG) distribution like many other equilibrium and nonequilibrium systems with high degree of correlations but do not obey the Gallavotti-Cohen steady-state fluctuation relation (SSFR). However, far from the unjamming transition (for smaller applied stresses) SSFR is satisfied for both Gaussian as well as non-Gaussian PDF. The observed slow variation of the mean shear rate with system size supports a recent theoretical prediction for observing GG distribution.

The size of the shear transformation zone (STZ) that initiates the elastic to plastic transition in a Zr-based bulk metallic glass was estimated by conducting a statistical analysis of the first pop-in event during spherical nanoindentation. A series of experiments led us to a successful description of the distribution of shear strength for the transition and its dependence on the loading rate. From the activation volume determined by statistical analysis the STZ size was estimated based on a cooperative shearing model. (C) 2012 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Genome sequences contain a number of patterns that have biomedical significance. Repetitive sequences of various kinds are a primary component of most of the genomic sequence patterns. We extended the suffix-array based Biological Language Modeling Toolkit to compute n-gram frequencies as well as n-gram language-model based perplexity in windows over the whole genome sequence to find biologically relevant patterns. We present the suite of tools and their application for analysis on whole human genome sequence.

Congruent oxidation occurs when an alloy oxidizes at constant oxygen chemical potential and temperature to an oxide in which the ratio of metallic components is the same as in the alloy. In alloys that undergo congruent oxidation concentration gradients near the surface are minimized. In this work thermodynamic conditions for congruent oxidation of binary and ternary alloys are formulated using the regular solution model to describe thermodynamic mixing properties. The conditions under which congruent oxidation can occur are identified. Congruent oxidation of a binary alloy X-Y will occur only if difference in oxygen potential for the oxidation of the two pure metals is less than twice the difference in regular solution parameters for the oxide and alloy phases (Omega(O)-Omega(A)). In the case of ternary alloys, congruency requirements for both two-phase and three-phase equilibria are discussed. Since the conditions for congruent oxidation of ternary alloy X-Y-Z depends on many parameters, the effect of systematic variation of the binary sets of regular solution parameters on the congruent composition is explored by numerical solution of the governing equations.
