Load and resistance factor design (LRFD) approach for the design of reinforced soil walls is presented to produce designs with consistent and uniform levels of risk for the whole range of design applications. The evaluation of load and resistance factors for the reinforced soil walls based on reliability theory is presented. A first order reliability method (FORM) is used to determine appropriate ranges for the values of the load and resistance factors. Using pseudo-static limit equilibrium method, analysis is conducted to evaluate the external stability of reinforced soil walls subjected to earthquake loading. The potential failure mechanisms considered in the analysis are sliding failure, eccentricity failure of resultant force (or overturning failure) and bearing capacity failure. The proposed procedure includes the variability associated with reinforced backfill, retained backfill, foundation soil, horizontal seismic acceleration and surcharge load acting on the wall. Partial factors needed to maintain the stability against three modes of failure by targeting component reliability index of 3.0 are obtained for various values of coefficients of variation (COV) of friction angle of backfill and foundation soil, distributed dead load surcharge, cohesion of the foundation soil and horizontal seismic acceleration. A comparative study between LRFD and allowable stress design (ASD) is also presented with a design example. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Barrier materials are required for encapsulating organic devices. A simple methodology based on organic passivation layer on a flexible substrate has been developed in this work. Stearyl stearate ( SS) was directly coated over the flexible Surlyn film. The barrier films with SS passivation layer exhibited much lower water vapor transmission rates compared to the neat Surlyn films. Moreover, the effect of the process of deposition of organic passivation layer on the resultant water vapor properties of the barrier films was evaluated. The accelerated lifetime studies conducted on encapsulated organic photovoltaics showed that the passivation layer improved the device performance by several fold compared to the non-passivated barrier films. Two-component super-hydrogelation triggered by the acid-base interaction of a L-histidine appended pyrenyl derivative (PyHis) and phthalic acid (PA) was reported. The use of isomeric isophthalic or terephthalic acid or other comparable acids in place of PA does not lead to salt formation and therefore hydrogelation is not observed. Excimer formation of the pyrenyl unit has not been detected although the PyHis : PA = 1: 1 system undergoes extensive self-assembly in aqueous solution. The synergistic effect of intermolecular H-bonding forces, pi-pi stacking, electrostatic interactions, etc. is found to be responsible for robust hydrogel formation. Development of chiral supramotecular assemblies has been verified through circular dichroism spectroscopy. Morphological investigations involving the PyHis : PA = 1: 1 system show vesicular nano-structures with a definite bilayer width at relatively low concentrations. The latter fuses to construct coiled-coil left-handed helical fibers upon increase in the concentrations of the gelators. The intertwining of the resultant helical fibers eventually results in hydrogel formation. The probable bilayer packing in the self-assembled structures has been probed using X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies and lanthanide sensitization, which suggests that the polar imidazolium hydrogen phthalate unit of the gelator forms the head group and faces the hydrophilic water environment while the hydrophobic pyrenyl units sit inside the hydrophobic core of the bilayer. The hydrogel exhibits multi-stimuli responsiveness including thixotropic behavior. In addition, shape-persistent as well as rapid self-healing behaviour of the hydrogel was established. Furthermore load-bearing characteristics of the hydrogel have also been demonstrated.

In composite solid propellants, the fuel and oxidizer are held together by a polymer binder. Among the different types of polymeric binders used in solid propellants, hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) is considered as the most versatile. HTPB is conventionally cured using isocyanates to form polyurethanes. However, the incompatibility of isocyanates with energetic oxidizers such as ammonium dinitramide and hydrazinium nitroformate, the short pot life of the propellant slurry, and undesirable side reactions with moisture are limiting factors which adversely affect the mechanical properties of HTPB based propellant. With an aim of resolving these problems, HTPB was chemically transformed to azidoethoxy carbonyl amine terminated polybutadiene and propargyloxy carbonyl amine terminated polybutadiene by adopting appropriate synthesis strategies and characterizing them by spectroscopic and chromatographic techniques. This is the first report on 1,3-dipolar addition reaction involving azide and alkyne end groups for cross-linking HTPB. The blend of these two polymers underwent curing under mild temperature (60 degrees C) conditions through 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction resulting in triazoletriazoline networks. The curing parameters were studied using differential scanning calorimetry. The kinetic parameter, viz., activation energy, was computed to be 107.6 kJ/mol, the preexponential factor was 2.79 x 10(12) s-(1), and the rate constant at 60 degrees C was computed to be 3.64 x 10-(5) s-(1). The cure profile at a given temperature was predicted using the kinetic parameters. Rheological studies revealed that the gel time for curing through the 1,3-dipolar addition is 280 min compared to 120 min for curing through the urethane route. The mechanical properties of the resultant cured polybutadiene network were superior to those of polyurethanes. The cured triazolinetriazole polymer network exhibited biphasic morphology with two glass transitions (T-g) at -56 and 42 degrees C in contrast to the polyurethane which exhibited a single transition at -60 degrees C. This was corroborated by associated morphological changes observed by scanning probe microscopy. The propellant processed using this binder has the advantages of improved pot life as indicated by the end of the mix viscosity which is 165 Pas as compared with 352 Pas for the polyurethane system along with a slow build- up rate. The mechanical properties of the propellant are superior to polyurethane with an improvement of 14% in tensile strength, 22% enhancement in elongation at break, and 12% in modulus.

The combustion of oxidizer zinc nitrate and fuel oxalic acid results in quasi-fibrous zinc oxide. The processing parameters including oxidizer to fuel ratio, time and temperature were optimized for the resultant crystal structure and morphology. Pure hexagonal phase formation does not depend on the fuel ratio, but a stoichiometric ratio of oxidizer to fuel at 450 degrees C and 30 min results in highly crystalline ZnO with 3 mu m length and 0.5 mu m width. This quasi-fiber originates from partial fusion of near spherical, similar to 60 nm particles during the rapid rate of reaction in the combustion process. Transmission electron microscopic analysis confirms the anisotropic primary particle orientation and pore distribution within the developed quasi-fibrous particles. The degradation of methyl orange was assessed by degrading the dye in the presence of the synthesized ZnO (2.95 eV) under both UV and visible light. Quasi-fibrous zinc oxide exhibits effective photocatalytic efficiency under visible light irradiation.

A modified solution combustion approach was applied in the synthesis of nanosize SrFeO3-delta (SFO) using single as well as mixture of citric acid, oxalic acid, and glycine as fuels with corresponding metal nitrates as precursors. The synthesized and calcined powders were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis and derivative thermogravimetric analysis (TG-DTG), scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, N-2 physisorption methods, and acidic strength by n-butyl amine titration methods. The FT-IR spectra show the lower-frequency band at 599 cm(-1) corresponds to metal-oxygen bond (possible Fe-O stretching frequencies) vibrations for the perovskite-structure compound. TG-DTG confirms the formation temperature of SFO ranging between 850-900 degrees C. XRD results reveal that the use of mixture of fuels in the preparation has effect on the crystallite size of the resultant compound. The average particle size of the samples prepared from single fuels as determined from XRD was similar to 50-35 nm, whereas for samples obtained from mixture of fuels, particles with a size of 30-25 nm were obtained. Specifically, the combination of mixture of fuels for the synthesis of SFO catalysts prevents agglomeration of the particles, which in turn leads to decrease in crystallite size and increase in the surface area of the catalysts. It was also observed that the present approach also impacted the catalytic activity of the SFO in the catalytic reduction of nitrobenzene to azoxybenzene.

Hydrodynamic instabilities of the flow field in lean premixed gas turbine combustors can generate velocity perturbations that wrinkle and distort the flame sheet over length scales that are smaller than the flame length. The resultant heat release oscillations can then potentially result in combustion instability. Thus, it is essential to understand the hydrodynamic instability characteristics of the combustor flow field in order to understand its overall influence on combustion instability characteristics. To this end, this paper elucidates the role of fluctuating vorticity production from a linear hydrodynamic stability analysis as the key mechanism promoting absolute/convective instability transitions in shear layers occurring in the flow behind a backward facing step. These results are obtained within the framework of an inviscid, incompressible, local temporal and spatio-temporal stability analysis. Vorticity fluctuations in this limit result from interaction between two competing mechanisms-(1) production from interaction between velocity perturbations and the base flow vorticity gradient and (2) baroclinic torque in the presence of base flow density gradients. This interaction has a significant effect on hydrodynamic instability characteristics when the base flow density and velocity gradients are colocated. Regions in the space of parameters characterizing the base flow velocity profile, i.e., shear layer thickness and ratio of forward to reverse flow velocity, corresponding to convective and absolute instability are identified. The implications of the present results on understanding prior experimental studies of combustion instability in backward facing step combustors and hydrodynamic instability in other flows such as heated jets and bluff body stabilized flames is discussed.

The binding of ligand 5,10,15,20-tetra(N-methyl-4-pyridyl)porphine (TMPyP4) with telomeric and genomic G-quadruplex DNA has been extensively studied. However, a comparative study of interactions of TMPyP4 with different conformations of human telomeric G-quadruplex DNA, namely, parallel propeller-type (PP), antiparallel basket-type (AB), and mixed hybrid-type (MH) G-quadruplex DNA, has not been done. We considered all the possible binding sites in each of the G-quadruplex DNA structures and docked TMPyP4 to each one of them. The resultant most potent sites for binding were analyzed from the mean binding free energy of the complexes. Molecular dynamics simulations were then carried out, and analysis of the binding free energy of the TMPyP4-G-quadruplex complex showed that the binding of TMPyP4 with parallel propeller-type G-quadruplex DNA is preferred over the other two G-quadruplex DNA conformations. The results obtained from the change in solvent excluded surface area (SESA) and solvent accessible surface area (SASA) also support the more pronounced binding of the ligand with the parallel propeller-type G-quadruplex DNA.

Atomization is the process of disintegration of a liquid jet into ligaments and subsequently into smaller droplets. A liquid jet injected from a circular orifice into cross flow of air undergoes atomization primarily due to the interaction of the two phases rather than an intrinsic break up. Direct numerical simulation of this process resolving the finest droplets is computationally very expensive and impractical. In the present study, we resort to multiscale modelling to reduce the computational cost. The primary break up of the liquid jet is simulated using Gerris, an open source code, which employs Volume-of-Fluid (VOF) algorithm. The smallest droplets formed during primary atomization are modeled as Lagrangian particles. This one-way coupling approach is validated with the help of the simple test case of tracking a particle in a Taylor-Green vortex. The temporal evolution of the liquid jet forming the spray is captured and the flattening of the cylindrical liquid column prior to breakup is observed. The size distribution of the resultant droplets is presented at different distances downstream from the location of injection and their spatial evolution is analyzed.

A simple methodology has been developed for the synthesis of functional nanoporous carbon (NPC) materials using a metal-organic framework (IRMOF-3) that can act as a template for external carbon precursor (viz, sucrose) and also a self-sacrificing carbon source. The resultant graphitic NPC samples (abbreviated as NPC-0, NPC-150, NPC-300, NPC-500 and NPC-1000 based on sucrose loading) obtained through loading different amounts of sucrose exhibit tunable textural parameters. Among these, NPC-300 shows very high surface area (BET approximate to 3119 m(2)/g, Langmuir approximate to 4031 m(2)/g) with a large pore volume of 1.93 cm(3)/g. High degree of porosity coupled with polar surface functional groups, make NPC-300 remarkable candidate for the uptake of H-2 (2.54 wt% at 1 bar, and 5.1 wt% at 50 bar, 77 K) and CO2 (64 wt% at 1 bar, 195 K and 16.9 wt% at 30 bar, 298 K). As a working electrode in a supercapacitor cell, NPC-300 shows excellent reversible charge storage thus, demonstrating multifunctional usage of the carbon materials. (C) 2015 Elsevier Inc. Gold-core platinum-shell (Au@Pt) nanoparticles with ultrathin platinum overlayers, ranging from submonolayer to two monolayers of platinum atoms, were prepared at room-temperature using a scalable, wet-chemical synthesis route. The synthesis involved the reduction of chloroauric acid with tannic acid to form 5 nm (nominal dia.) gold nanoparticles followed by addition of desired amount of chloroplatinic acid and hydrazine to form platinum overlayers with bulk Pt/Au atomic ratios (Pt surface coverages) corresponding to 0.19 (half monolayer), 0.39 (monolayer), 0.58 (1.5 monolayer) and 0.88 (2 monolayers). The colloidal particles were coated with octadecanethiol and phase-transferred into chlroform-hexane mixture to facilitate sample preparation for structural characterization. The structure of the resultant nanoparticles were determined to be Au@Pt using HRTEM, SAED, XPS, UV-vis and confirmed by cyclic voltammetry (CV) studies. Monolayers of octadecanethiol coated Au@Pt nanoparticles were self-assembled at an air-water interface and transfer printed twice onto a gold substrate to form bilayer films for electrochemical characterization. Electrochemical activity on such films was observed only after the removal of the octadecanethiol ligand coating the nanoparticles, using a RF plasma etching process. The electrochemical activity (HOR, MOR studies) of Au@Pt nanoparticles was found to be highest for particles having a two atom thick platinum overlayer. These nanoparticles can significantly enhance platinum utilization in electrocatalytic applications as their platinum content based activity was three times higher than pure platinum nanoparticles.

A critical limitation that has hampered widespread application of the electrically conducting reduced graphene oxide (r-GO) is its poor aqueous dispersibility. Here we outline a strategy to obtain water-dispersible conducting r-GO sheets, free of any stabilizing agents, by exploiting the fact that the kinetics of the photoreduction of the insulating GO is heterogeneous. We show that by controlling UV exposure times and pH, we can obtain r-GO sheets with the conducting sp(2)-graphitic domains restored but with the more acidic carboxylic groups, responsible for aqueous dispersibility, intact. The resultant photoreduced r-GO sheets are both conducting and water-dispersible.

Sulfenylation of beta-diketones is challenging as beta-diketones undergo deacylation after sulfenylation in the reaction medium. The sulfenylation of beta-diketones without deacylation under metal-free conditions at ambient temperature via a cross dehydrogenative coupling (CDC) strategy is reported. The resultant products can be further manipulated to form alpha,alpha-disubstituted beta-diketones and pyrazoles.

The interaction of a single bubble with a single vortex ring in water has been studied experimentally. Measurements of both the bubble dynamics and vorticity dynamics have been done to help understand the two-way coupled problem. The circulation strength of the vortex ring (Gamma) has been systematically varied, while keeping the bubble diameter (D-b) constant, with the bubble volume to vortex core volume ratio (V-R) also kept fixed at about 0.1. The other important parameter in the problem is a Weber number based on the vortex ring strength. (We = 0.87 rho(Gamma/2 pi a)(2)/(sigma/D-b); a = vortex core radius, sigma = surface tension), which is varied over a large range, We = 3-406. The interaction between the bubble and ring for each of the We cases broadly falls into four stages. Stage I is before capture of the bubble by the ring where the bubble is drawn into the low-pressure vortex core, while in stage II the bubble is stretched in the azimuthal direction within the ring and gradually broken up into a number of smaller bubbles. Following this, in stage III the bubble break-up is complete and the resulting smaller bubbles slowly move around the core, and finally in stage IV the bubbles escape. Apart from the effect of the ring on the bubble, the bubble is also shown to significantly affect the vortex ring, especially at low We (We similar to 3). In these low-We cases, the convection speed drops significantly compared to the base case without a bubble, while the core appears to fragment with a resultant large decrease in enstrophy by about 50 %. In the higher-We cases (We > 100), there are some differences in convection speed and enstrophy, but the effects are relatively small. The most dramatic effects of the bubble on the ring are found for thicker core rings at low We (We similar to 3) with the vortex ring almost stopping after interacting with the bubble, and the core fragmenting into two parts. The present idealized experiments exhibit many phenomena also seen in bubbly turbulent flows such as reduction in enstrophy, suppression of structures, enhancement of energy at small scales and reduction in energy at large scales. These similarities suggest that results from the present experiments can be helpful in better understanding interactions of bubbles with eddies in turbulent flows.

Illumination plays an important role in optical microscopy. Kohler illumination, introduced more than a century ago, has been the backbone of optical microscopes. The last few decades have seen the evolution of new illumination techniques meant to improve certain imaging capabilities of the microscope. Most of them are, however, not amenable for wide-field observation and hence have restricted use in microscopy applications such as cell biology and microscale profile measurements. The method of structured illumination microscopy has been developed as a wide-field technique for achieving higher performance. Additionally, it is also compatible with existing microscopes. This method consists of modifying the illumination by superposing a well-defined pattern on either the sample itself or its image. Computational techniques are applied on the resultant images to remove the effect of the structure and to obtain the desired performance enhancement. This method has evolved over the last two decades and has emerged as a key illumination technique for optical sectioning, super-resolution imaging, surface profiling, and quantitative phase imaging of microscale objects in cell biology and engineering. In this review, we describe various structured illumination methods in optical microscopy and explain the principles and technologies involved therein. (C) 2015 Optical Society of America
