Understanding clouds and their role in climate depends in part on our ability to understand how individual cloud particles respond to environmental conditions. Keeping this objective in mind, a quadrupole trap with thermodynamic control has been designed and constructed in order to create an environment conducive to studying clouds in the laboratory. The quadrupole trap allows a single cloud particle to be suspended for long times. The temperature and water vapor saturation ratio near the trapped particle is controlled by the flow of saturated air through a tube with a discontinuous wall temperature. The design has the unique aspect that the quadrupole electrodes are submerged in heat transfer fluid, completely isolated from the cylindrical levitation volume. This fluid is used in the thermodynamic system to cool the chamber to realistic cloud temperatures, and a heated section of the tube provides for the temperature discontinuity. Thus far, charged water droplets, ranging from about 30-70 microns in diameter have been levitated. In addition, the thermodynamic system has been shown to create the necessary thermal conditions that will create supersaturated conditions in subsequent experiments. These advances will help lead to the next generation of ice nucleation experiments, moving from hemispherical droplets on a substrate to a spherical droplet that is not in contact with any surface.

Direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation is susceptible to errors introduced by the presence of real-ground and resonant size scatterers in the vicinity of the antenna array. To compensate for these errors pre-calibration and auto-calibration techniques are presented. The effects of real-ground constituent parameters on the mutual coupling (MC) of wire type antenna arrays for DOA estimation are investigated. This is accomplished by pre-calibration of the antenna array over the real-ground using the finite element method (FEM). The mutual impedance matrix is pre-estimated and used to remove the perturbations in the received terminal voltage. The unperturbed terminal voltage is incorporated in MUSIC algorithm to estimate DOAs. First, MC of quarter wave monopole antenna arrays is investigated. This work augments an existing MC compensation technique for ground-based antennas and proposes reduction in MC for antennas over finite ground as compared to the perfect ground. A factor of 4 decrease in both the real and imaginary parts of the MC is observed when considering a poor ground versus a perfectly conducting one for quarter wave monopoles in the receiving mode. A simulated result to show the compensation of errors direction of arrival (DOA) estimation with actual realization of the environment is also presented. Secondly, investigations for the effects on received MC of λ/2 dipole arrays placed near real-earth are carried out. As a rule of thumb, estimation of mutual coupling can be divided in two regions of antenna height that is very near ground 0

BACKGROUND: Reperfusion injury is insufficiently addressed in current clinical management of acute limb ischemia. Controlled reperfusion carries an enormous clinical potential and was tested in a new reality-driven rodent model. METHODS AND RESULTS: Acute hind-limb ischemia was induced in Wistar rats and maintained for 4 hours. Unlike previous tourniquets models, femoral vessels were surgically prepared to facilitate controlled reperfusion and to prevent venous stasis. Rats were randomized into an experimental group (n=7), in which limbs were selectively perfused with a cooled isotone heparin solution at a limited flow rate before blood flow was restored, and a conventional group (n=7; uncontrolled blood reperfusion). Rats were killed 4 hours after blood reperfusion. Nonischemic limbs served as controls. Ischemia/reperfusion injury was significant in both groups; total wet-to-dry ratio was 159+/-44% of normal (P=0.016), whereas muscle viability and contraction force were reduced to 65+/-13% (P=0.016) and 45+/-34% (P=0.045), respectively. Controlled reperfusion, however, attenuated reperfusion injury significantly. Tissue edema was less pronounced (132+/-16% versus 185+/-42%; P=0.011) and muscle viability (74+/-11% versus 57+/-9%; P=0.004) and contraction force (68+/-40% versus 26+/-7%; P=0.045) were better preserved than after uncontrolled reperfusion. Moreover, subsequent blood circulation as assessed by laser Doppler recovered completely after controlled reperfusion but stayed durably impaired after uncontrolled reperfusion (P=0.027). CONCLUSIONS: Reperfusion injury was significantly alleviated by basic modifications of the initial reperfusion period in a new in vivo model of acute limb ischemia. With this model, systematic optimizations of according protocols may eventually translate into improved clinical management of acute limb ischemia.

The impact of the systematic variation of either DeltapK(a) or mobility of 140 biprotic carrier ampholytes on the conductivity profile of a pH 3-10 gradient was studied by dynamic computer simulation. A configuration with the greatest DeltapK(a) in the pH 6-7 range and uniform mobilities produced a conductivity profile consistent with that which is experimentally observed. A similar result was observed when the neutral (pI = 7) ampholyte is assigned the lowest mobility and mobilities of the other carriers are systematically increased as their pI's recede from 7. When equal DeltapK(a) values and mobilities are assigned to all ampholytes a conductivity plateau in the pH 5-9 region is produced which does not reflect what is seen experimentally. The variation in DeltapK(a) values is considered to most accurately reflect the electrochemical parameters of commercially available mixtures of carrier ampholytes. Simulations with unequal mobilities of the cationic and anionic species of the carrier ampholytes show either cathodic (greater mobility of the cationic species) or anodic (greater mobility of the anionic species) drifts of the pH gradient. The simulated cationic drifts compare well to those observed experimentally in a capillary in which the focusing of three dyes was followed by whole column optical imaging. The cathodic drift flattens the acidic portion of the gradient and steepens the basic part. This phenomenon is an additional argument against the notion that focused zones of carrier ampholytes have no electrophoretic flux.

This document corresponds to the tutorial on realistic neural modeling given by David Beeman at WAM-BAMM*05, the first annual meeting of the World Association of Modelers (WAM) Biologically Accurate Modeling Meeting (BAMM) on March 31, 2005 in San Antonio, TX. Part I - Introduction to Realistic Neural Modeling for the Beginner: This is a general overview and introduction to compartmental cell modeling and realistic network simulation for the beginner. Although examples are drawn from GENESIS simulations, the tutorial emphasizes the general modeling approach, rather than the details of using any particular simulator. Part II - Getting Started with Modeling Using GENESIS: This builds upon the background of Part I to describe some details of how this approach is used to construct cell and network simulations in GENESIS. It serves as an introduction and roadmap to the extended hands-on GENESIS Modeling Tutorial.

This tutorial gives a step by step explanation of how one uses experimental data to construct a biologically realistic multicompartmental model. Special emphasis is given on the many ways that this process can be imprecise. The tutorial is intended for both experimentalists who want to get into computer modeling and for computer scientists who use abstract neural network models but are curious about biological realistic modeling. The tutorial is not dependent on the use of a specific simulation engine, but rather covers the kind of data needed for constructing a model, how they are used, and potential pitfalls in the process.

This study examines the consequences of living in segregated and mixed neighbourhoods on ingroup bias and offensive action tendencies, taking into consideration the role of intergroup experiences and perceived threat. Using adult data from a cross-sectional survey in Belfast, Northern Ireland, we tested a model that examined the relationship between living in segregated (N = 396) and mixed (N = 562) neighbourhoods and positive contact, exposure to violence, perceived threat and outgroup orientations. Our results show that living in mixed neighbourhoods was associated with lower ingroup bias and reduced offensive action tendencies. These effects were partially mediated by positive contact. However, our analysis also shows that respondents living in mixed neighbourhoods report higher exposure to political violence and higher perceived threat to physical safety. These findings demonstrate the importance of examining both social experience and threat perceptions when testing the relationship between social environment and prejudice.
