Knowledge of past atmospheric pCO2 is important for evaluating the role of greenhouse gases in climate forcing. Ice core records show the tight correlation between climate change and pCO2, but records are limited to the past ~900 kyr. We present surface ocean pH and pCO2 data, reconstructed from boron isotopes in planktonic foraminifera over two full glacial cycles (0-140 and 300-420 kyr). The data co-vary strongly with the Vostok pCO2-record and demonstrate that the coupling between surface ocean chemistry and the atmosphere is recorded in marine archives, allowing for quantitative estimation of atmospheric pCO2 beyond the reach of ice cores.

Concentrator photovoltaic is an emergent technology that may be a good economical and efficient alternative for the generation of electricity at a competitive cost. However, the reliability of these new solar cells and systems is still an open issue due to the high-irradiation level they are subjected to as well as the electrical and thermal stresses that they are expected to endure. To evaluate the reliability in a short period of time, accelerated aging tests are essential. Thermal aging tests for concentrator photovoltaic solar cells and systems under illumination are not available because no technical solution to the problem of reaching the working concentration inside a climatic chamber has been available. This work presents an automatic instrumentation system that overcomes the aforementioned limitation. Working conditions have been simulated by forward biasing the solar cells to the current they would handle at the working concentration (in this case, 700 and 1050 times the irradiance at one standard sun). The instrumentation system has been deployed for more than 10 000 h in a thermal aging test for III-V concentrator solar cells, in which the generated power evolution at different temperatures has been monitored. As a result of this test, the acceleration factor has been calculated, thus allowing for the degradation evolution at any temperature in addition to normal working conditions to be obtained.

Analysis of learning data (learning analytics) is a new research field with high growth potential. The main objective of Learning analytics is the analysis of data (interactions being the basic data unit) generated in virtual learning environments, in order to maximize the outcomes of the learning process; however, a consensus has not been reached yet on which interactions must be measured and what is their influence on learning outcomes. This research is grounded on the study of e-learning interaction typologies and their relationship with students? academic performance, by means of a comparative study between different interaction typologies (based on the agents involved, frequency of use and participation mode). The main conclusions are a) that classifications based on agents offer a better explanation of academic performance; and b) that each of the three typologies are able to explain academic performance in terms of some of their components (student-teacher and student-student interactions, evaluating students interactions and active interactions, respectively), with the other components being nonrelevant.

Learning analytics is the analysis of static and dynamic data extracted from virtual learning environments, in order to understand and optimize the learning process. Generally, this dynamic data is generated by the interactions which take place in the virtual learning environment. At the present time, many implementations for grouping of data have been proposed, but there is no consensus yet on which interactions and groups must be measured and analyzed. There is also no agreement on what is the influence of these interactions, if any, on learning outcomes, academic performance or student success. This study presents three different extant interaction typologies in e-learning and analyzes the relation of their components with students? academic performance. The three different classifications are based on the agents involved in the learning process, the frequency of use and the participation mode, respectively. The main findings from the research are: a) that agent-based classifications offer a better explanation of student academic performance; b) that at least one component in each typology predicts academic performance; and c) that student-teacher and student-student, evaluating students, and active interactions, respectively, have a significant impact on academic performance, while the other interaction types are not significantly related to academic performance.

This cooperation project aims to improve the sanitation facilities of the city of Wukro (located in the Tigray Region, northern Ethiopia), particularly the management of latrine wastes, by designing a sludge treatment plant in the city. It is framed within the Final Project Department of the E.T.S.I. de Caminos, Canales y Puertos, in collaboration with Wukro’s St. Mary’s College and the Mission of Ángel Olaran, that are part of the Ethiopian Catholic Church Diocese of Adigrat (ECCA). The present city, of about 42,000 inhabitants, was founded by the Italians in 1936. Due to its geographic location, which makes the city suitable for industrial and agricultural activities, Wukro is becoming an important administrative and economic center in the region, with a fast growing population.

There are significant levels of concern about the relevance and the difficulty of learning some issues on Strength of Materials and Structural Analysis. Most students of Continuum Mechanics and Structural Analysis in Civil Engineering usually point out some key learning aspects as especially difficult for acquiring specific skills. These key concepts entail comprehension difficulties but ease access and applicability to structural analysis in more advanced subjects. Likewise, some elusive but basic structural concepts, such as flexibility, stiffness or influence lines, are paramount for developing further skills required for advanced structural design: tall buildings, arch-type structures as well as bridges. As new curricular itineraries are currently being implemented, it appears appropriate to devise a repository of interactive web-based applications for training in those basic concepts. That will hopefully train the student to understand the complexity of such concepts, to develop intuitive knowledge on actual structural response and to improve their preparation for exams. In this work, a web-based learning assistant system for influence lines on continuous beams is presented. It consists of a collection of interactive user-friendly applications accessible via Web. It is performed in both Spanish and English languages. Rather than a “black box” system, the procedure involves open interaction with the student, who can simulate and virtually envisage the structural response. Thus, the student is enabled to set the geometric, topologic and mechanic layout of a continuous beam and to change or shift the loading and the support conditions. Simultaneously, the changes in the beam response prompt on the screen, so that the effects of the several issues involved in structural analysis become apparent. The system is performed through a set of web pages which encompasses interactive exercises and problems, written in JavaScript under JQuery and DyGraphs frameworks, given that their efficiency and graphic capabilities are renowned. Students can freely boost their self-study on this subject in order to face their exams more confidently. Este Trabajo de Fin de Grado (TFG) tiene el objetivo de aportar un sistema de enseñanza innovador, un sistema de enseñanza mediante el cual se consiga involucrar a los alumnos en tareas y prácticas en las que se adquieran conocimientos a la vez que se siente un ambiente de juego, es decir, que se consiga aprender de forma divertida. Está destinado al sistema educativo de la Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros Informáticos de la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, en concreto a las asignaturas relacionadas con los Procesadores de Lenguajes. La aplicación desarrollada en este trabajo está destinada tanto a los profesores de las asignaturas de Procesadores de Lenguajes como a los alumnos que tengan alguna relación con esas asignaturas, consiguiendo mayor interacción y diversión a la hora de realizar la tareas y prácticas de las asignaturas. Para los dos tipos de usuarios descritos anteriormente, la aplicación está configurada para que puedan identificarse mediante sus credenciales, comprobándose si los datos introducidos son correctos, y así poder acceder al sistema. Dependiendo de qué tipo de usuario se identifique, tendrá unas opciones u otras dentro del sistema. Los profesores podrán dar de alta, ver, modificar o dar de baja las configuraciones para los analizadores de los lenguajes correspondientes a las diferentes asignaturas que están configurados previamente en el sistema. Además, los profesores pueden dar de alta, ver, modificar o dar de baja los fragmentos de código que formarán los ficheros correspondientes a las plantillas de pruebas del analizador léxico que se les ofrece a los alumnos para realizar comprobaciones de las prácticas. Mediante la aplicación podrán establecer diferentes características y propiedades de los fragmentos que incorporen al sistema. Por otra parte, los alumnos podrán realizar la configuración del lenguaje, definido por los profesores, para la parte del analizador léxico de las prácticas. Esta configuración será guardada para el grupo al que corresponde el alumno, pudiendo realizar modificaciones cualquier miembro del grupo. De esta manera, se podrán posteriormente establecer las relaciones necesarias entre los elementos del lenguaje según la configuración de los profesores y los elementos referentes a las prácticas de los alumnos.Además, los alumnos podrán realizar comprobaciones de la parte léxica de sus prácticas mediante los ficheros que se generan por el sistema en función de sus opciones de práctica y los fragmentos añadidos por los profesores. De esta manera, se informará a los alumnos del éxito de las pruebas o bien de los fallos ocasionados con sus resultados, bien por el formato del archivo subido como resultado de la prueba o bien por el contenido incorrecto de este mismo. Todas las funciones que ofrece esta aplicación son completamente on-line y tendrán una interfaz llamativa y divertida, además de caracterizarse por su facilidad de uso y su comodidad. En el trabajo realizado para este proyecto se cumplen tanto las Pautas de Accesibilidad para Contenidos Web (WCAG 2.0), así como las propiedades de un código HTML 5 y CSS 3 de manera correcta, para así conseguir que los usuarios utilicen una aplicación fácil, cómoda y atractiva.---ABSTRACT---This Final Year Project (TFG) aims to contribute the educational system of the School of Computer Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Madrid, especially in subjects related with Language Processors. This project is an interactive learning system whose goal is to learn in an amusing environment. To realize this target, the system involves students, using environments of games in tasks and practices. The application developed in this project is designed for both professors of the subjects of Language Processors and students who have some relation to these subjects. This perspective achieve more interaction and a funny environment during the subject‘s tasks. The application is configured in order to the users can be identified by their credentials, checking whether the identification data are correct to have access to the system. According on what type of user is identified, they will have different options within the system. Professors will be able to register, modify or delete settings for the scanner of languages for all the subjects preconfigured in the system. Additionally, professors can register, show, modify or remove the code of the templates from scanner tests that are offered to students for testing the practical exercises. The professors may provide also different characteristics and properties of fragments incorporated in the system. Moreover, students can make the configuration of languages, getting in the systems by the administrators, for the scanner module of their practical exercises. This configuration will be saved for the group of the student. This model can also be changed by any group member. The system permits also establish later the relationships between the elements of language fixes by professors and elements developed by the students. Students could check the lexical part of their practical exercises through files that are created according to their practical options and the fragments added by professors. Thus students will be informed of success or failure in the uploaded files format and in the content of them. All functions provide by this application are completely on-line and will have a striking and funny interface, also characterized by its ease of use and comfort.The work reaches both the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.0), and the properties of an HTML 5 and CSS 3 code correctly, in order to get the users to get an easy, convenient application and attractive.

Stress early in postnatal life may result in long-term memory deficits and selective loss of hippocampal neurons. The mechanisms involved are poorly understood, but they may involve molecules and processes in the immature limbic system that are activated by stressful challenges. We report that administration of corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), the key limbic stress modulator, to the brains of immature rats reproduced the consequences of early-life stress, reducing memory functions throughout life. These deficits were associated with progressive loss of hippocampal CA3 neurons and chronic up-regulation of hippocampal CRH expression. Importantly, they did not require the presence of stress levels of glucocorticoids. These findings indicate a critical role for CRH in the mechanisms underlying the long-term effects of early-life stress on hippocampal integrity and function.

Membrane preparations enriched in plasma membrane vesicles prepared from promastigotes of Leishmania tarentolae were shown to accumulate thiolate derivatives of 73As(III). Free arsenite was transported at a low rate, but rapid accumulation was observed after reaction with reduced glutathione (GSH) conditions that favor the formation of As(GS)3. Accumulation required ATP but not electrochemical energy, indicating that As(GS)3 is transported by an ATP-coupled pump. Pentostam, a Sb(V)-containing drug that is one of the first-line therapeutic agents for treatment of leishmaniasis, inhibited uptake after reaction with GSH. Vesicles prepared from a strain in which both copies of the pgpA genes were disrupted accumulated As(GS)3 at wild-type levels, demonstrating that the PgpA protein is not the As(GS)3 pump. These results have important implications for the mechanism of drug resistance in the trypanosomatidae, suggesting that a plasma membrane As(GS)3 pump catalyzes active extrusion of metal thiolates, including the Pentostam-glutathione conjugate.

The life history of Harpegnathos saltator is exceptional among ants because both queens and workers reproduce sexually. Recently mated queens start new colonies alone, but later some of the offspring workers also become inseminated and take over the egg-laying role. This alternation seems associated with the existence of very complex underground nests, which are designed to survive floods. Longevity of ponerine queens is low (a consequence of limited caste dimorphism in this "primitive" subfamily), and upon the death of an H. saltator foundress, the nest represents a substantial investment. The queen's progeny should thus be strongly selected to retain the valuable nests. Unlike the flying queens, the workers copulate with males from their own colonies, and, thus, their offspring are expected to be highly related to the foundress. Colony fission appears not to occur because a daughter fragment would lack an adequate nest for protection. Thus, the annual production of queens in colonies with reproductive workers remains essential for the establishment of new colonies. This contrasts with various other ponerine species in which the queens no longer exist.

This article analyzes the appropriateness of a text summarization system, COMPENDIUM, for generating abstracts of biomedical papers. Two approaches are suggested: an extractive (COMPENDIUM E), which only selects and extracts the most relevant sentences of the documents, and an abstractive-oriented one (COMPENDIUM E–A), thus facing also the challenge of abstractive summarization. This novel strategy combines extractive information, with some pieces of information of the article that have been previously compressed or fused. Specifically, in this article, we want to study: i) whether COMPENDIUM produces good summaries in the biomedical domain; ii) which summarization approach is more suitable; and iii) the opinion of real users towards automatic summaries. Therefore, two types of evaluation were performed: quantitative and qualitative, for evaluating both the information contained in the summaries, as well as the user satisfaction. Results show that extractive and abstractive-oriented summaries perform similarly as far as the information they contain, so both approaches are able to keep the relevant information of the source documents, but the latter is more appropriate from a human perspective, when a user satisfaction assessment is carried out. This also confirms the suitability of our suggested approach for generating summaries following an abstractive-oriented paradigm.

This article describes the research carried out regarding the application of cathodic protection (CP) and cathodic prevention (CPrev), in some cases with a pre-treatment of electrochemical chloride extraction (ECE), on representative specimens of reinforced concrete structures, using an anodic system consisting of a graphite-cement paste applied as a coating on the surface. The aim of this research is to find out the competence of this anode for the aforementioned electrochemical treatments. The efficiency of this anode has been clearly demonstrated, as well as its capability to apply a combined process of ECE and after CP.
