Schooling and swimming behaviors of Hyla semilineata tadpoles (Anura, Hylidae)

The schooling behavior of Hyla semilineata Spix, 1824 tadpoles is described. Experiments were carried out both in the natural environment and under controlled conditions to quantify the constant movement of these tadpoles. Bullfrog tadpoles (Rana catesbeiana Shaw, 1802), similar in size to the H. semilineata larvae, were used as controls in the experiments. Hyla semilineata tadpoles remained stationary for one sixth of the time that the bullfrog tadpoles did and the number of individuals of H. semilineata moving at any given moment was about seven times greater. The schooling behavior and constant swimming behavior of these tadpoles may enhance the effect of their warning coloration.

The diet of the South American sea lion (Otaria flavescens) at Río Negro, Patagonia, Argentina, during the winter-spring period

The South American sea lion, Otaria flavescens (Shaw, 1800) population is steadily expanding along the Patagonian coast of Argentina in the last decades. However, little is known about the feeding ecology of the species in the area. The aim of this study was to analyze the food habits of O. flavescens from 91 scats collected at Río Negro province, during the winter and spring of 2005. Fish occurred in 96% of scats containing prey remains, followed by cephalopods (26%). Raneya brasiliensis (Kaup, 1856) was the most frequent and abundant species occurring in 58.6% of samples and constituting almost 50% of fish predated. Second in importance were Porichthys porosissimus (Cuvier, 1829) and Cynoscion guatucupa (Cuvier, 1830) in terms of occurrence (%FO 20.7) and numbers (29.6%) respectively. The squid Loligo gahi (d'Orbigny, 1835) was the most frequent cephalopod prey (42.1%), whereas Octopus tehuelchus (d'Orbigny, 1834) was the most abundant (77%). The higher amount and diversity of prey found in the spring in comparison with the winter season might be related to a higher feeding activity of seals or to a seasonal increase in food availability in the area.

A contribution to the study of the Haematozoon parasites of bats: a new mammalian haemoproteid, Polychromophilus deanei n. sp

Polychromophilus deanei n. sp. (Haemosporidiidea, Haemoproteidae) is described from a vespertilionid bat, Myotis nigricans nigricans (SCHINZ, 1821), captured on the Rio Maracapuçu, Município of Abaetetuba, Pará, Brasil. Mature oocysts were found in 2 specimens of the ectoparasite Basilia sp., taken form the infected animal. The parasite is probably the same as that previously described in another bat, Glossophaga soricina soricina, from the same general area, by DEANE & DEANE in 1961.

Phlebotominae brasileiros: II - Psychodopygus wellcomei, nova espécie antropófila de flebótomo do grupo squamiventris, do Sul do Estado do Pará, Brasil (Diptera, Psychodidae)

Os autores descrevem os adultos de uma nova espécie de flebótomo do gênero Psychodopygus, grupo squamiventris, que ocorre no sul do Estado do Pará, Brasil, baseando-se em 7 exemplares machos e 8 fêmeas, coletados com isca humana ou animal. Os machos têm genitália complexa, bem característica, distinguindo-se fàcilmente das epécies afins. As fêmeas são muito semelhantes às das demais espécies do grupo, separando-se, porém, pelo aspecto dos dutos individuais inteiramente esclerotinizados, pelo número de dentes verticais do cibário, de 12 a 20, e plo comprimento do terceiro segmento antenal: 265 a 332μ. Ratificam o parecer de Martins et al. sôbre a identidade de "L. squamiventris" do Amapá, segundo Forattini, com P. maripaensis, e mostram o que lhes parece ser o aspecto natural da genitália do macho dessa espécie. Acreditam na importância da nova espécie na transmissão de Leishmaniose tegumentar para o homem, salientando ainda os hábitos diuturnos das fêmeas.

Presence of Psychodopygus wellcomei (Diptera: Psychodidae), a proven vector of Leishmania braziliensis braziliensis, in Ceara State

Psychodopygus wellcomei, a proven vector of (muco-)cutaneous leishmaniasis, has been found for the first time outside of the Amazon Basin, in Ceará State. Parasitological and entomological evidence suggests that the Leishmania braziliensis braziliensis/Ps. wellcomei zoonosis is widespread on the Brazilian Shield.

The retained capacity of Lutzomya longipalpis (Lutz & Neiva) to transmit Leishmania chagasi (Cunha & Chagas) after eight years (64 generations in a closed laboratory colony

A closed Lutzomyia longipalpis colony, from Ceará has been used to transmit Leishmania chagasi isolated from a fox in Pará state. The last time this colony was successfully used in similar transmission experiments was eight years (64 generations) ago indicating that this colony of Lu. longipalpis has fully maintained its vectorial capacity in spite of such a long period of maintainance in the laboratory.

Observations on the sandfly (Diptera: Psychodidae) fauna of Além Paraíba state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, and the isolation of a parasite of the Leishmania braziliensis complex from Psychodopygus hirsuta hirsuta

Dissection of 765 sandflies captured in Além Paraíba (the type locality of Leishmania braziliensis) resulted in the isolation, from Psychodopygus hirsuta hirsuta, of a parasite of the Le. braziliensis complex.

New Phlebotomine Sandflies of the walkeri group (Diptera: Psychodidae) from Pará State, Brazil, with a pictorial key 1

The male and female of Lutzomyia carmelinoi n.sp., and the female only of L. baculus and L. williamsi, (Diptera:Psychodidae) are described and illustrated from specimens collected in Pará state, Brazil. A pictorial key is presented to these and the other members of the walkeri group.

Psychodopygus Leonidasdeanei a new species of sand fly (Diptera: Psychodidae) from Pará State, Brazil

The male and female of Psychodopygus leonidasdeanei n.sp., (Diptera : Psychodidae) are described and illustrated from specimens collected in Shannon traps near Santarém, Pará State, Brazil. This species is a member of the squamiventris series and information is given on the distribution of the members of this series in Pará. A pictorial guide to separate the males and some females from others in the series is given.
