The industry generally has sought materials with high mechanical resistance, low density, thermal stability and corrosion resistance. In the aerospace industry, for example, the use of aluminum alloys, such as Al 2024-T351 and Al 7075-T7351, have become essential. However, the use of these materials often do not resulted in a satisfactory performance of the component, since the presence of cracks can cause total rupture of the component, even with a tension below the yield stress of the material, unexpectedly. In this work, these aluminum alloys were analyzed and samples were modeled by the finite element method. Moreover, in the models were applied two different types of cracks, central and edge crack, a vertical force was applied to result in a tension 70% of the yield stress of the material analyzed. Through stress asymptotic distribution in the region near the crack tip were calculated the values of the stress intensity factors for each crack length, after the stress intensity factors characterized were compared graphically with the values of fracture toughness found in the available literature

The aim of the present study was to investigate the corrosion resistance in chloride medium of two cylindrical steel samples from civil construction (CA-50 and CA-60). For this purpose, electrochemical measurements were performed in NaCl solution, 4.0 g/L, naturally aerated. According to electrochemical responses, it was observed an active dissolution process at open circuit potential for both steels. In this comparative study, the differences between CA-50 and CA60 were not significant, since the values of polarization resistance estimated by EIS were the same order of magnitude for both types of steel (oscillating between 200 and 500 Ohm). For all evaluated thicknesses of concrete reinforcement, these values ranged between 2 and 9 kOhm, and the lower value was associated with lower thickness, particularly at 7, 21 and 35 days. When these results were compared with those determined for the CA-60, it was found that the layer of concrete reinforcement provide a protection against corrosion in chloride medium at least ten times larger

Aluminum alloys have shown great potential for the automotive industry, especially aluminum alloys 6xxx series. This category has good mechanical strength and excellent corrosion resistance, important for the areas of construction and transport. The automotive industry has always shown great interest in the study of fatigue behavior, because structural components are subjected to cyclic and vibration loads, generating cracks and fracturing. The mechanical response depends on the material properties, applications, surface condition and microstructure. In this work was study the fatigue behavior of high cycle of machined bodies (not polished) and the effect of roughness on the fatigue life for three aluminum alloys of 6xxx series: AA6005, AA6351 and AA606, all in the T6 condition . S / N curves were made from fatigue tests in rotating bending (R = -1). The influence of roughness was studied by measuring the roughness of each specimen. Was compare the fatigue behavior of polished specimen and not polished specimens. The fractured surfaces of samples were observed by MEV, and it was observed that most of nucleation sites for fatigue crack is initiated below the surface

The purpose of this work was to evaluate the corrosion of commercially pure (CP) titanium and Ti6Al4V in vitro at different F- concentrations regularly found in the oral cavity by using different electrochemical tests and surface analysis techniques. electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), open circuit potential (OCP) and potentio-dynamic polarization tests were associated to advanced characterization techniques such as SEM, EDS, AFM, ICP-MS and XPS. OCP tests revealed a higher reactivity of both CP titanium and Ti6Al4V at 12,300 ppm F- concentration than that recorded at 227 ppm F-. Also, a significant decrease of the corrosion resistance of both materials was noticed by EIS in fluoride solutions. Material loss caused by corrosion was noticed on titanium surfaces by SEM and AFM in the presence of high F- concentration. CP titanium degraded by pitting corrosion while Ti6Al4V suffered from general corrosion showing micro-cracks on surface. Furthermore, a high release of metallic ions from the test samples after immersion at high F concentrations was detected by ICP-MS, that can be potentially toxic to oral tissues. The electrochemical behaviour of Cu, Cu-Al and Cu-Al-Ag alloys in aqueous solutions of NaCl (0.5 M, pH = 3.00) was studied by means of voltammetric methods and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The surfaces were examined by SEM and EDX analysis. Cu-Al-Ag alloy shows a potentiodynamic behaviour similar to that of the pure copper electrode while the Cu-Al alloy presents some minor differences. In the active dissolution region the electrodes suffer pitting corrosion and in the other potential regions there are the formation of a passivant film with composition depending on the potential. The impedance responses of the electrodes are discussed. An electrodissolution mechanism is proposed and the effect of the alloying elements upon the impedance response and polarisation curves is explained. The main effects are due to the production of copper and silver chlorides and aluminium oxides/ hydroxides at the corroding interface. The addition of Al or (Al + Ag) increases the corrosion resistance of pure copper. © 1995.

Using the sol-gel process, organic-inorganic hybrid coatings were synthesized by incorporation of different concentrations of functionalized carbon nanotubes, to improve their mechanical strength and thermal resistance without changing its passivation character. The siloxane-PMMA hybrids were prepared by radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) with 3-methacryloxipropiltrimethoxisilane (MPTS) using the thermal initiator benzoyl peroxide (BPO), followed by acid catalyzed hydrolysis and condensation of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS). The analysis of pristine and functionalized carbon nanotubes was carried out using Scanning Electron Microscopy, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy and Raman Spectroscopy. Structural analysis of hybrids was performed by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, Atomic Force Microscopy and Raman Spectroscopy. For analysis of mechanical strength and thermal stability were performed mechanical compression tests and thermogravimetric analysis, respectively. Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy was used to evaluate the corrosion resistance in saline environment. The results showed an effective functionalization of carbon nanotubes with carboxyl groups and conservation of its structure. The hybrids showed high siloxane network connectivity and roughness of approximately 0.3 nm. The incorporation of carbon nanotubes in the hybrid matrix did not change significantly their thermal stability. Samples containing carbon nanotubes exhibit good corrosion resistance (on the order of MΩ in saline environment), but the lack of complete dispersion of carbon nanotubes in the hybrid, resulted in a loss of mechanical and corrosion resistance compared to hybrid matrix.

Aluminum Alloys are widely used as structural materials in the aerospace industry due to low weight, high mechanical strength and enduring corrosion resistance. Their resistance to corrosion is attributed to the rapidly formed stable oxide film (Al2O3) which spontaneously forms itself on the surface of the material. However, in the presence of aggressive ions, such as halide, Aluminum Alloys are subject to a localized process of corrosion. The electrochemical behavior of 7081-T73511 and 7050-T7451 Aluminum Alloys employed in the aerospace industry was investigated using a 0.6 M NaCl solution under the conditions of a controlled mass transport employing a rotating disk electrode. The theoretical limiting current density was determined by the Kouteki-Levich equation. The results confirmed that the inter-metallic Al7Cu2Fe acts as preferential cathode generating the galvanic coupling and the dissolution of the Aluminummatrix around it.
