The knowledge of the structure characteristic of the Organic Matter is important for the understanding of the natural process. In this context aquatic humic substances (principal fraction) were isolated from water sample collected from the two distinct rivers, using procedure recommended for International Humic Substances Society and characterized by elemental analysis, electron paramagnetic resonance and nuclear magnetic resonance (13C NMR). The results were interpreted using principal component analysis (PCA) and the statistical analyses showed different in the structural characteristics of the aquatic humic substances studied.

In the work presented here, Ce0.97Cu0.03O2 nanoparticles were synthesized by a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method under different synthesis temperatures. The obtained nanoparticles were tested as catalysts in preferential oxidation of CO to obtain CO-free H2 (PROX reaction). The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (EPR) and temperature-programmed reduction (TPR). X-ray diffraction measurements detected the presence of pure cubic CeO2 for all synthesized samples. TEM images of the Ce0.97Cu0.03O2 nanoparticles revealed that samples synthesized at 80°C are composed mainly of nanospheres with an average size of 20 nm. The formation of some nanorods with an average diameter of 8 nm and 40 nm in length, and the size reduction of the nanoparticles from 20 to approximately 15 nm is observed with increasing synthesis temperature. EPR spectra indicated that copper is found well dispersed in sample synthesized at 160°C, located predominant in surface sites of ceria. For samples synthesized at 80 and 120°C, the species are less dispersed than in the other one, resulting in the formation of Cu2+−Cu2+ dimmers at the surface of ceria. TPR profiles presented two reduction peaks, one below 400°C attributed to the reduction of different copper species and a second peak around 800°C attributed to the reduction of Ce4+→ Ce3+ species located in the volume of the nanoparticles. The peak related to the reduction of copper species shifts to lower temperatures with increasing synthesis temperature, i.e., the sample synthesized at 160°C is more easily reduced than the ones synthesized at 120 and 80°C. The nanoparticles showed active as catalysts for the CO-PROX reaction. The microwave-assisted method revealed efficient for the synthesis of Ce0.97Cu0.03O2 nanoparticles with copper species selective for the CO-PROX reaction, which reaches CO conversions up to 92% for the sample synthesized at 160°C.

The electrical response of Ba(Ti0.90Zr0.10)O3 (BZT) ceramics obtained by the mixed oxide method as a functionof tungsten content was investigated. According to X-ray diffraction analysis the single phase BZT1W (1wt.% W doped BZT) and BZT2W (2 wt.% W doped BZT) ceramics, crystallized in a perovskite structure, wereobtained. It is also shown that tungsten substituted ceramics can be sintered at a reduced temperature whencompared to the undoped BZT. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analyses reveals that substitution ofTi4+ by W6+ causes distortion in the crystal structure changing lattice parameter. Substitution of W6+ on B-siteof ABO3 perovskite BZT ceramics shifted the phase transition to lower temperatures up to a tungsten contentof 2 wt.% leading to a relaxor-like behaviour. Keywords: donor dopant; ceramics; dielectric response; mixed oxide method

Ground state interactions and excited states and transients formed after photolysis and photosensitization of 2-ethylaminodiphenylborinate (2APB) were studied by various techniques. The UV spectrum shows a large absorption band at 235 nm (epsilon = 14,500 M-1 cm(-1)) with a shoulder at 260 nm. The fluorescence spectra show increasing emission intensity with maximum at 300 nm, which shifts to the red up to 10(-3) M concentrations. At higher concentrations, the emission intensity decreases, probably due to the formation of aggregates. UV excitation in deareated solutions shows the formation of two transients at 300 and 360 nm. The latter has a lifetime of 5.7 mu s in ethanol and is totally quenched in the presence of oxygen and assigned to the triplet state of 2APB. The 300 nm peak is not affected by oxygen, has a lifetime in the order of milliseconds, and corresponds to a boron-centered radical species originated from the singlet state. A boron radical can also be obtained by electron transfer from triplet Safranine to the borinate (k(q) = 9.7 x 10(7) M-1 s(-1)) forming the semioxidized form of the dye. EPR experiments using DMPO show that dye-sensitized and direct UV-photolysis of 2ABP renders initially arylboron-centered radicals. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A mixed-valence complex, [Fe(III)Fe(II)L1(mu-OAc)(2)]BF4 center dot H2O, where the ligand H(2)L1 = 2-{[[3-[((bis-(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)amino)methyl)-2-hydroxy-5-methylbenzyl](pyridin-2-ylmethyl)amino]methyl]phenol}, has been studied with a range of techniques, and, where possible, its properties have been compared to those of the corresponding enzyme system purple acid phosphatase. The (FeFeII)-Fe-III and Fe-2(III) oxidized species were studied spectroelectrochemically. The temperature-dependent population of the S = 3/2 spin states of the heterovalent system, observed using magnetic circular dichroism, confirmed that the dinuclear center is weakly antiferromagnetically coupled (H = -2JS(1).S-2, where J = -5.6 cm(-1)) in a frozen solution. The ligand-to-metal charge-transfer transitions are correlated with density functional theory calculations. The (FeFeII)-Fe-III complex is electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR)-silent, except at very low temperatures (<2 K), because of the broadening caused by the exchange coupling and zero-field-splitting parameters being of comparable magnitude and rapid spin-lattice relaxation. However, a phosphate-bound Fe-2(III) complex showed an EPR spectrum due to population of the S-tot = 3 state (J= -3.5 cm(-1)). The phosphatase activity of the (FeFeII)-Fe-III complex in hydrolysis of bis(2,4-dinitrophenyl)phosphate (k(cat.) = 1.88 x 10(-3) s(-1); K-m = 4.63 x 10(-3) mol L-1) is similar to that of other bimetallic heterovalent complexes with the same ligand. Analysis of the kinetic data supports a mechanism where the initiating nucleophile in the phosphatase reaction is a hydroxide, terminally bound to Fe-III. It is interesting to note that aqueous solutions of [Fe(III)Fe(II)L1(mu-OAc)(2)](+) are also capable of protein cleavage, at mild temperature and pH conditions, thus further expanding the scope of this complex's catalytic promiscuity.

In this work we report results of continuous wave (CW) electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy of vanadium oxide nanotubes. The observed EPR spectra are composed of a weak well-resolved spectrum of isolated V4+ ions on top of an intense and broad structure-less line shape, attributed to spin-spin exchanged V4+ clusters. With the purpose to deconvolute the structured weak spectrum from the composed broad line, a new approach based on the Krylov basis diagonalization method (KBDM) is introduced. It is based on the discrimination between broad and sharp components with respect to a selectable threshold and can be executed with few adjustable parameters, without the need of a priori information on the shape and structure of the lines. This makes the method advantageous with respect to other procedures and suitable for fast and routine spectral analysis, which, in conjunction with simulation techniques based on the spin Hamiltonian parameters, can provide a full characterization of the EPR spectrum. Results demonstrate and characterize the coexistence of two V4+ species in the nanotubes and show good progress toward the goal of obtaining high fidelity deconvoluted spectra from complex signals with overlapping broader line shapes. Vanadium oxide nanotubes (NTs) were synthesized by the sol-gel method followed by a long-term hydrothermal treatment. The obtained nanotubes have a multiwall structure, and 70% of vanadium ions are in the V4+ state. This percentage was derived by evaluating three components of the magnetic susceptibility; namely, (i) the paramagnetic Curie-Weiss behavior, (ii) antiferromagnetic dimers, and (iii) magnetic trimers. The as-made NTs were annealed in situ in the cavity of the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrometer. The line shape changes irreversibly at 390 K, and the EPR susceptibility presents an anomaly at 425 K. These changes are interpreted as a partial oxidation of the V4+ ions and consequently a decrease in the concentration of the magnetic species. The quantification of the V4+ ions of the annealed NTs reveals a diminution to 39% of V4+, a weakening of the Curie-Weiss and antiferromagnetic dimers contributions, and the suppression of magnetic trimers. Vibrational studies confirm the decrease of V4+ amount. (C) 2012 American Institute of Physics. [http://dx.doi.org/10.1063/1.4749417]

Herein, we report results of calculations based on density functional theory (BP86/TZVP) of a set of isatin-Schiff base copper(II) and related complexes, 1-12, that have shown significant pro-apoptotic activity toward diverse tumor cells. The interaction of the copper(II) cation with different ligands has been investigated at the same level of theory. The strength and character of the Cu(II)-L bonding was characterized by metal-ligand bond lengths, vibrational frequencies, binding energies, ligand deformation energies, and natural population analysis. The metal-ligand bonding situation was also characterized by using two complementary topological approaches, the quantum theory of atoms-in-molecules (QTAIM) and the electron localization function (ELF). The calculated electronic g-tensor and hyperfine coupling constants present significant agreement with the EPR experimental data. The calculated parameters pointed to complex 10 as the most stable among the isatin-Schiff base copper(II) species, in good agreement with experimental data that indicate this complex as the most reactive in the series. This work reports evidence of the induced migration of Mn2+ ions in Cd(1-x)MnxS nanocrystals (NCs) by selecting a specific thermal treatment for each sample. The growth and characterization of these magnetic dots were investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM), optical absorption (OA), and electronic paramagnetic resonance (EPR) techniques. The comparison of experimental and simulated EPR spectra confirms the incorporation of Mn2+ ions both in the core and at the dot surface regions. The thermal treatment of a magnetic sample, via selected annealing temperature and/or time, affects the fine and hyperfine interaction constants which modify the shape and the intensity of the EPR transition spectrum. The identification of these changes has allowed tracing the magnetic ion migration from core to surface regions of a dot as well as inferring the local density of the magnetic impurity ions. Hybrid materials were prepared by combining clay mineral (montmorillonite SWy-2 and saponite SapCa-1) and dyes extracted from the acai (Euterpe oleracea Mart.) fruit, which contains mainly anthocyanins from the 3-glucoside class, to increase the stability of the dye and facilitate its handling and storage. Clay minerals are common ingredients in therapeutic and pharmaceutical products and acai phytochemicals show disease prevention properties. The extract of the acai fruit was mixed with water suspensions of layered silicates in different proportions. The dyeclay hybrids presented incorporated organic material in amounts up to 24 wt.-%. X ray diffractometry and vibrational (FTIR and Raman) and electronic spectroscopic data showed that flavylium cations were successfully intercalated between the inorganic layers. Mass-coupled thermogravimetric analysis (TGA-MS) data showed a significant gain in the thermostability of the organic species in relation to anthocyanins in the extract. MS curves related to CO2 release (m/z = 44) are ascendant above 200 degrees C when the dye cations are confined to the inorganic structure. The radical scavenging activity of the hybrid materials was monitored by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) toward the stable radical DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) and compared to the activity of the acai extract. In addition to the fact that interaction with clay minerals improves the stability of the acai dyes against heat, their properties as radical scavengers are preserved after intercalation. The improvement in the properties of the nutraceutical species by intercalation by using biocompatible inorganic structures can be valuable for human therapy.

This paper reports on the synthesis (chemical co-precipitation reaction) and characterization (X-ray diffraction, magnetization, and electron paramagnetic resonance) of nanosized Cd1-xMnxS particles with manganese concentration up to x = 0.73. Though the literature reports that nanosized (bulk) CdS can incorporate as much as 30% (50%) of manganese ion within its crystal structure we found manganese segregation at the nanoparticle surface at doping levels as low as 14%. We found that both XRD and magnetization data support the presence of the Mn3O4 phase (observed spin-glass transition around 43 K) at the high manganese doping levels whereas the EPR data strongly suggest preferential incorporation of manganese at the nanoparticle's surface, even at low manganese doping levels. Analyses of the experimental data strongly suggest the preparation of well-defined core/shell (Cd1-xMnxS/Mn3O4) structures at higher levels of manganese doping.
