Liquid phase hydrodechlorination of chlorinated benzenes was studied over Ni/active carbon (Ni/AC), Ni/gamma-Al2O3, Ni/SiO2 and Raney Ni. The complete dechlorination of chlorobenzene (ClBz) was realized at 333-343 K on Ni/AC under hydrogen atmosphere of 1.0 MPa in the presence of alkaline hydroxide. Dichloro- and trichlorobenzenes were also hydrodechlorinated with 50-95% yields of benzene under the similar conditions, as above. The reaction follows zero-order to ClBz concentration and 1.9 order to hydrogen pressure. The reaction does not proceed in the absence of alkaline hydroxide, suggesting the complete coverage of active nickel surface with produced chlorine and the removal of the chlorine ion with hydroxide ion as a rate-limiting step. The active catalysts were characterized by H-2 chemisorption and transmission electron microscopy techniques. The apparent activity strongly depends on the active area of nickel on catalyst surface. The heat capacity (C-p) of nanocrystalline nickel (nc-Ni, 40 mn crystallite size) has been measured over the temperature range of 78-370 K with a high-resolution automated adiabatic calorimeter. The measured results are compared with the C-p values of the corresponding coarse-grained crystal, and an enhancement of heat capacity of the nanocrystalline nickel was observed to be 2-4% in the temperature range between 100 and 370 K. The thermal stability of the nanocrystalline nickel sample was determined by a differential scanning calorimeter and a thermogravimetric system. The melting point of nc-Ni is the same as that of the corresponding coarse-grained crystalline nickel and the sample is stable at temperature lower than 500 K. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. The validation of a fully automated dissolved Ni monitor for in situ estuarine studies is presented, based on adsorptive cathodic stripping voltammetry (AdCSV). Dissolved Ni concentrations were determined following on-line filtration and UV digestion, and addition of an AdCSV ligand (dimethyl glyoxime) and pH buffer (N-2-hydroxyethylpiperazine-N′-2-ethanesulphonic acid). The technique is capable of up to six fully quantified Ni measurements per hour. The automated in situ methodology was applied successfully during two surveys on the Tamar estuary (south west Britain). The strongly varying sample matrix encountered in the estuarine system did not present analytical interferences, and each sample was quantified using internal standard additions. Up to 37 Ni measurements were performed during each survey, which involved 13 h of continuous sampling and analysis. The high resolution data from the winter and summer tidal cycle studies allowed a thorough interpretation of the biogeochemical processes in the studied estuarine system.

Fe-Co/CoFe2O4 nanocomposite and CoFe2O4 nanopowders were prepared by the hydrothermal method. The structure of magnetic powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction diffractometer (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermal gravity analysis (TGA) and differential thermal analysis (DTA) analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS), and Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR) techniques, while magnetic properties were determined by using a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) at room temperature.

A series of salicylaldimine-based neutral Ni(II) complexes (3a-j) [ArN = CH(C6H40)]Ni(PPh3)Ph [3a,Ar = C6H5; 3b,Ar = C6H4F(o); 3c, Ar = C6H4F(m); 3d, Ar = C6H4F(p); 3e, Ar = C6H3F2(2,4); 3f, Ar = C6H3F2(2,5); 3g, Ar = C6H3F2(2,6); 3h, Ar = C6H3F2(3,5); 3i, Ar = C6H2F3(3,4,5); 3j, Ar = C6H5] have been synthesized in good yield, and the structures of complexes 3a and 3i have been confirmed by X-ray crystallographic analysis. Using modified methylaluminoxane as a cocatalyst, these neutral Ni(II) complexes exhibited high catalytic activities for the vinylic polymerization of norbornene.

Silica and Merrifield resin were used as carriers for the support of alpha-diimine nickel(II) precatalysts for ethylene polymerization. The alpha-diimine ligands containing allyl were modified by introducing the reactive Si-Cl end-group, allowing their immobilization via a direct reaction of the Si-Cl groups with the silanols on silica surface or the hydroxyls on the ethanolamine-modified Merrifield resin. The resulting supported alpha-diimine ligands were characterized by analytical and spectroscopic techniques (NMR and Fr-IR).

Spinel ferrite, MFe2O4 (M = Co, Ni), ribbons with nanoporous structure were prepared by electrospinning combined with sol-gel technology. The ribbons were formed through the agglomeration of magnetic nanoparticles with PVP as the structure directing template. The length of the polycrystalline ribbons can reach millimeters, and the width of the ribbons can be tuned from several micrometers to several hundred nanometers by changing the concentration of precursor. The nanoporous structure was formed during the decomposition of PVP and inorganic salts.
