Video technology has been used as a tool in research for many years. However, its widespread use as a fisheries management tool has been limited due to its relatively high cost. This is changing as video technology becomes a household commodity now widely available throughout the world.

The annealing of ion implantation damage in silicon by rapid isothermal heating has been monitored by the time resolved reflectivity (TRR) method. This technique was applied simultaneously at a wavelength of 632. 8nm and also at 1152nm, where the optical absorption coefficient of silicon is less. The two wavelength method simplifies the interpretation of TRR results, extends the measurement depth and allows good resolution of the position of the interface between amorphous and crystalline silicon. The regrowth of amorphous layers in silicon, created by self implantation and implanted with electrically active impurities, was observed. Regrowth in rapid isothermal annealing occurs during the heating up stage of typical thermal cycles. Impurities such as B, P, and As increase the regrowth rate in a manner consistent with a vacancy model for regrowth. The maximum regrowth rate in boron implanted silicon is limited by the solid solubility.

Hybridization between yak Poephagus grunniens and taurine Bos taurus or indicine B. indicus cattle has been widely practiced throughout the yak geographical range, and gene flow is expected to have occurred between these species. To assess the impact of cattle admixture on domestic yak, we examined 1076 domestic yak from 29 populations collected in China, Bhutan, Nepal, India, Pakistan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia and Russia using mitochondrial DNA and 17 autosomal microsatellite loci. A cattle diagnostic marker-based analysis reveals cattle-specific mtDNA and/or autosomal microsatellite allele introgression in 127 yak individuals from 22 populations. The mean level of cattle admixture across the populations, calculated using allelic information at 17 autosomal microsatellite loci, remains relatively low (mY(cattle) = 2.66 +/- 0.53% and Q(cattle) = 0.69 +/- 2.58%), although it varies a lot across populations as well as among individuals within population. Although the level of cattle admixture shows a clear geographical structure, with higher levels of admixture in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and Mongolian and Russian regions, and lower levels in the Himalayan and Pamir Plateau region, our results indicate that the level of cattle admixture is not significantly correlated with the altitude across geographical regions as well as within geographical region. Although yak-cattle hybridization is primarily driven to produce F-1 hybrids, our results show that the subsequent gene flow between yak and cattle took place and has affected contemporary genetic make-up of domestic yak. To protect yak genetic integrity, hybridization between yak and cattle should be tightly controlled.

Accurate and efficient computation of the nearest wall distance d (or level set) is important for many areas of computational science/engineering. Differential equation-based distance/ level set algorithms, such as the hyperbolic-natured Eikonal equation, have demonstrated valuable computational efficiency. Here, in the context, as an 'auxiliary' equation to the main flow equations, the Eikonal equation is solved efficiently with two different finite volume approaches (the cell vertex and cell-centered). Application of the distance solution is studied for various geometries. Moreover, a procedure using the differential field to obtain the medial axis transform (MAT) for different geometries is presented. The latter provides a skeleton representation of geometric models that has many useful analysis properties. As an alternative approach to the pure geometric methods (e.g. the Voronoi approach), the current d-MAT procedure bypasses many difficulties that are usually encountered by pure geometric methods, especially in three dimensional space. It is also shown that the d-MAT approach provides the potential to sculpt/control the MAT form for specialized solution purposes. Much attention has been paid on amphibian peptides for their wide-ranging pharmacological properties, clinical potential, and gene-encoded origin. More than 300 antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) from amphibians have been studied. Peptidomics and genomics analysis combined with functional test including microorganism killing, histamine-releasing, and mast cell degranulation was used to investigate antimicrobial peptide diversity. Thirty-four novel AMPs from skin secretions of Rana nigrovittata were identified in current work, and they belong to 9 families, including 6 novel families. Other three families are classified into rugosin, gaegurin, and temporin family of amphibian AMP, respectively. These AMPs share highly conserved preproregions including signal peptides and spacer acidic peptides, while greatly diversified on mature peptides structures. In this work, peptidomics combined with genomics analysis was confirmed to be an effective way to identify amphibian AMPs, especially novel families. Some AMPs reported here will provide leading molecules for designing novel antimicrobial agents. (C) 2009 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved

Generation of homogeneous oligodendrocytes as donor cells is essential for human embryonic stem cell (hESC)-based cell therapy for demylinating diseases. Herein we present a novel method for efficiently obtaining mature oligodendrocytes from hESCs with high purity (79.7 +/- 6.9%), using hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) and G5 supplement(containing insulin, transferrin, selenite, biotin, hydrocortisone, basic fibroblast growth factor and epidermal growth factor) in a four-step method. We induced hESCs into neural progenitors (NP) with HGF (5 ng/ml) and G5 (1 x) supplemented medium in an adherent differentiation system. The purified NPs were amplified in suspension as neurospheres for 1 month, and terminal oligodendrocyte differentiation was then induced by G5 supplement withdrawal and HGF treatment (20 ng/ml). The cells generated displayed typical morphologies of mature oligodendrocytes and expressed oligodendrocyte markers O4 and myelin basic protein (MBP). Our result revealed that HGF significantly enhanced the proliferation of hESC-derived NPs and promoted the differentiation as well as the maturation of oligodendrocytes from NPs. Further studies suggest that HGF/c-Met signaling pathway might play an important role in oligodendrocyte differentiation in our system. Our studies provide a means for generating the clinically relevant cell type and a platform for deciphering the molecular mechanisms that control oligodendrocyte differentiation. In recent years, there has been an increased number of sequenced RNAs leading to the development of new RNA databases. Thus, predicting RNA structure from multiple alignments is an important issue to understand its function. Since RNA secondary structures are often conserved in evolution, developing methods to identify covariate sites in an alignment can be essential for discovering structural elements. Structure Logo is a technique established on the basis of entropy and mutual information measured to analyze RNA sequences from an alignment. We proposed an efficient Structure Logo approach to analyze conservations and correlations in a set of Cardioviral RNA sequences. The entropy and mutual information content were measured to examine the conservations and correlations, respectively. The conserved secondary structure motifs were predicted on the basis of the conservation and correlation analyses. Our predictive motifs were similar to the ones observed in the viral RNA structure database, and the correlations between bases also corresponded to the secondary structure in the database.

The diversity of non-domestic buildings at urban scale poses a number of difficulties to develop models for large scale analysis of the stock. This research proposes a probabilistic, engineering-based, bottom-up model to address these issues. In a recent study we classified London's non-domestic buildings based on the service they provide, such as offices, retail premise, and schools, and proposed the creation of one probabilistic representational model per building type. This paper investigates techniques for the development of such models. The representational model is a statistical surrogate of a dynamic energy simulation (ES) model. We first identify the main parameters affecting energy consumption in a particular building sector/type by using sampling-based global sensitivity analysis methods, and then generate statistical surrogate models of the dynamic ES model within the dominant model parameters. Given a sample of actual energy consumption for that sector, we use the surrogate model to infer the distribution of model parameters by inverse analysis. The inferred distributions of input parameters are able to quantify the relative benefits of alternative energy saving measures on an entire building sector with requisite quantification of uncertainties. Secondary school buildings are used for illustrating the application of this probabilistic method. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
