In this paper, we demonstrate a digital signal processing (DSP) algorithm for improving spatial resolution of images captured by CMOS cameras. The basic approach is to reconstruct a high resolution (HR) image from a shift-related low resolution (LR) image sequence. The aliasing relationship of Fourier transforms between discrete and continuous images in the frequency domain is used for mapping LR images to a HR image. The method of projection onto convex sets (POCS) is applied to trace the best estimate of pixel matching from the LR images to the reconstructed HR image. Computer simulations and preliminary experimental results have shown that the algorithm works effectively on the application of post-image-captured processing for CMOS cameras. It can also be applied to HR digital image reconstruction, where shift information of the LR image sequence is known.

The present methods for the detection of oil in discharge water are based either on chemical analysis of intermittent samples or bypass pipelines with instrumentation to detect either dissolved or dispersed hydrocarbons by a variety of optical techniques including absorption, scattering and fluorescence. However, test have shown that no single instruments entirely meets either present needs or satisfies the requirements of the future more stringent legislation which may limit total hydrocarbon content to 30 ppm or even less. Hence, in this paper, a detector is devised which can detect both dissolved and dispersed oil products, has a high immunity to scattering and can operate in-line and harsh environments with a detection sensitivity of a few ppm throughout a wide range of operations.

Image processing offers unparalleled potential for traffic monitoring and control. For many years engineers have attempted to perfect the art of automatic data abstraction from sequences of video images. This paper outlines a research project undertaken at Napier University by the authors in the field of image processing for automatic traffic analysis. A software based system implementing TRIP algorithms to count cars and measure vehicle speed has been developed by members of the Transport Engineering Research Unit (TERU) at the University. The TRIP algorithm has been ported and evaluated on an IBM PC platform with a view to hardware implementation of the pre-processing routines required for vehicle detection. Results show that a software based traffic counting system is realisable for single window processing. Due to the high volume of data required to be processed for full frames or multiple lanes, system operations in real time are limited. Therefore specific hardware is required to be designed. The paper outlines a hardware design for implementation of inter-frame and background differencing, background updating and shadow removal techniques. Preliminary results showing the processing time and counting accuracy for the routines implemented in software are presented and a real time hardware pre-processing architecture is described.

In the half-duplex relay channel applying the decode-and-forward protocol the relay introduces energy over random time intervals into the channel as observed at the destination. Consequently, during simulation the average signal power seen at the destination becomes known at run-time only. Therefore, in order to obtain specific performance measures at the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of interest, strategies are required to adjust the noise variance during simulation run-time. It is necessary that these strategies result in the same performance as measured under real-world conditions. This paper introduces three noise power allocation strategies and demonstrates their applicability using numerical and simulation results.

A sensing device for a touchless, hand gesture, user interface based on an inexpensive passive infrared pyroelectric detector array is presented. The 2 x 2 element sensor responds to changing infrared radiation generated by hand movement over the array. The sensing range is from a few millimetres to tens of centimetres. The low power consumption (< 50 μW) enables the sensor’s use in mobile devices and in low energy applications. Detection rates of 77% have been demonstrated using a prototype system that differentiates the four main hand motion trajectories – up, down, left and right. This device allows greater non-contact control capability without an increase in size, cost or power consumption over existing on/off devices.

Constant false alarm rate (CFAR) techniques can be used in Pseudo-Noise (PN) code acquisition in Spread Spectrum (SS) communication systems, and all the CFAR techniques perform well in homogeneous background PN code acquisition. However, in non-homogeneous background, some CFAR techniques suffer rapid degradation. GO/SO (Greatest-of/Smallest-of) CFAR and adaptive censored mean level detector (ACMLD) are two adaptive CFAR techniques, which are analyzed and compared with other CFAR techniques. The simulation results show that GO/SO CFAR is superior to other CFAR techniques, it maintains short mean acquisition time (MAT) even at environment with strong clutter noise, and ACMLD is suitable for background with strong interfering targets

In the development of biosensors for ecotoxicity testing it is desirable to produce a small, portable system that can be used in the field. Toxicity testing using bioluminescence is widely used in the laboratory utilising natural and genetically modified (lux/ luc-marked) bacteria and other microorganisms. It is currently not possible to use genetically manipulated microorganisms in field testing and a biosensor, therefore, that incorporates naturally luminescent organisms may be preferred. In the development of a biosensor it is aimed to use the naturally luminescent bacterium Vibrio fischeri as a toxicity detection system on a chip. The bacterium will be immobilised in a polymeric matrix. Current work deals with the optimisation of light output and light preservation within the bacterium prior to immobilisation in polyvinyl alcohol. An examination of a range of physicochemical conditions within the polymer will be made, including cell density, thickness of polymer film, growth and light induction environment, and, preservation conditions, in order to develop a testing system giving consistent results over the lifetime of the biosensor. Data will be presented on light production using different culture media for the growth of V. fischeri and retention of light under immobilised conditions. .
