The Iowa Soil Conservation: Laws were enacted in 1939 creating the state soil conservation agency and governing committee and providing for the creation of Iowa’s 100 soil and water conservation districts. • The Mines & Minerals Bureau, through the federal Abandoned Mine Land (AML) Program, worked with various watershed groups to again secure an additional $1 million dollars in funding for the construction on projects in Marion, Mahaska and Monroe Counties. • Iowa hosted the Mississippi River/Gulf of Mexico Hypoxia Task Force tour and meeting in September 2009.

With the implementation of the 2000 Q-MC specification, an incentive is provided to produce an optimized gradation to improve placement characteristics. Also, specifications for slip-formed barrier rail have changed to require an optimized gradation. Generally, these optimized gradations have been achieved by blending an intermediate aggregate with the coarse and fine aggregate. The demand for this intermediate aggregate has been satisfied by using crushed limestone chips developed from the crushing of the parent concrete stone. The availability, cost, and physical limitations of crushed limestone chips can be a concern. A viable option in addressing these concerns is the use of gravel as the intermediate aggregate. Unfortunately, gravels of Class 3I durability are limited to a small geographic area in Mississippi river sands north of the Rock River. Class 3 or Class 2 durability gravels are more widely available across the state. The durability classification of gravels is based on the amount and quality of the carbonate fraction of the material. At present, no service histories or research exists to assess the impact of using Class 3 or 2 durability gravels would have on the long-term durability of Portland cement concrete (PCC) pavement requiring Class 3I aggregate.

A volatilização de amônia (NH3) e a nitrificação seguida pela desnitrificação são os principais mecanismos de perdas de N nos solos alagados destinados ao cultivo do arroz. Se os fertilizantes nitrogenados não forem manejados adequadamente, os índices de recuperação de N pelas plantas serão muito baixos. O objetivo deste trabalho foi quantificar a volatilização de amônia em solos alagados influenciada pela forma de aplicação de ureia, em casa de vegetação. Foram conduzidos dois experimentos, sendo um em Cambissolo (Thermic Vertic Haplaquepts), no Estado do Mississippi, EUA, e outro em Gleissolo (Entisol Aeric Typic), em Santa Catarina, Brasil. A captação de amônia foi realizada por esponjas acidificadas, colocadas dentro de tubos de PVC (15 cm de diâmetro e 60 cm de altura) encravados dentro de baldes com 15 cm de espessura de solo, sem a presença de plantas. Em cada vaso, foram aplicados 353 mg de N, equivalente a 200 kg ha-1 de N, nas seguintes formas: ureia sólida aplicada sobre a superfície do solo úmido, sem alagamento posterior; ureia solubilizada em água deionizada e aplicada sobre a lâmina de água de alagamento; ureia sólida aplicada sobre a lâmina de água de alagamento; ureia incorporada na lama, seguida de alagamento; ureia aplicada sobre solo seco, seguida de alagamento 48 h depois; e uma testemunha alagada (sem N). As esponjas captadoras de amônia foram trocadas ao serem completados 1, 3, 6, 9, 13, 17 e 22 dias de alagamento, e nelas determinou-se a quantidade de amônia volatilizada. Na água de alagamento do solo, determinaram-se o pH e a concentração de amônio. A emissão de amônia variou com a forma de aplicação da ureia, e o comportamento foi similar nos dois solos. A volatilização de amônia na testemunha foi insignificante. Nos tratamentos com ureia, as menores perdas ocorreram quando ela foi incorporada na lama (com posterior alagamento) seguida pela aplicação em solo seco com alagamento 48 h após, tendo atingido, respectivamente, 4 e 15 % do N aplicado no Cambissolo (CXbe) e 6 e 10 % no Gleissolo (GXbd). As maiores perdas ocorreram quando a ureia foi aplicada na lâmina de água, tanto na forma líquida (34 % no CXbe e 38 % no GXbd) quanto na sólida (29 % no CXbe e 37 % no GXbd), seguida pela ureia aplicada em solo úmido, sem alagamento (26 % no CXbe e 22 % no GXbd). A fim de evitar excessiva volatilização de amônia em solos cultivados com arroz no sistema inundado, a ureia deve ser aplicada na lama ou em condições de solo seco e, em ambos os casos, seguida de alagamento imediato.

The Gp-9 gene in fire ants represents an important model system for studying the evolution of social organization in insects as well as a rich source of information relevant to other major evolutionary topics. An important feature of this system is that polymorphism in social organization is completely associated with allelic variation at Gp-9, such that single-queen colonies (monogyne form) include only inhabitants bearing B-like alleles while multiple-queen colonies (polygyne form) additionally include inhabitants bearing b-like alleles. A recent study of this system by Leal and Ishida (2008) made two major claims, the validity and significance of which we examine here. After reviewing existing literature, analyzing the methods and results of Leal and Ishida (2008), and generating new data from one of their study sites, we conclude that their claim that polygyny can occur in Solenopsis invicta in the U.S.A. in the absence of expression of the b-like allele Gp-9(b) is unfounded. Moreover, we argue that available information on insect OBPs (the family of proteins to which GP-9 belongs), on the evolutionary/population genetics of Gp-9, and on pheromonal/behavioral control of fire ant colony queen number fails to support their view that GP-9 plays no role in the chemosensory-mediated communication that underpins regulation of social organization. Our analyses lead us to conclude that there are no new reasons to question the existing consensus view of the Gp-9 system outlined in Gotzek and Ross (2007).

He talks about early pioneers and explorers, the routes they took and how they navigated into this newly discovered territory.

Since the introduction of expanded levels of intrastate service on October 30, 2006, Amtrak trains in Illinois have produced impressive gains in both ridership and ticket revenue. This success and continuing stakeholder support has given rise to a formal request from the Illinois Department of Transportation (“Ill. DOT”) to Amtrak to develop a feasibility study regarding possible service consisting of a morning and an evening train in each direction between Chicago and the Quad Cities. The area between Chicago and the Quad Cities includes many rapidly growing communities. From Chicago toward the West and South, many towns and cities have experienced double digit growth increases in population since the year 2000. Southern DuPage, Cook and Will counties have seen especially strong growth, pressuring highway infrastructure, utilities, and schools. Community development and highway congestion are readily apparent when traveling the nearly 3 hour, 175 mile route between Chicago and the Quad Cities. As information, there are only three weekday round trip bus frequencies available between Chicago and the Quad Cities. The Quad City International Airport offers a total of 10 daily scheduled round trip flights to Chicago's O'Hare International Airport via two separate carriers flying regional jets. The Quad Cities (Davenport, Moline, Rock Island, and Bettendorf) are located along the Mississippi River. Nearly 60% of its visitors are from the Chicago area. With dozens of miles of scenic riverfront, river boating, casinos, and thousands of acres of expansive public spaces, the Quad Cities area is a major draw from both Iowa and Illinois. The huge Rock Island Arsenal, one of the largest military arsenals in the country and located along the river, is transitioning to become the headquarters of the United States First Army. As will be discussed later in the report, there is only one logical rail route through the Quad Cities themselves. The Iowa Interstate Railroad operates through the Quad Cities along the river and heads west through Iowa. The Quad Cities are considering at least three potential locations for an Amtrak station. A study now underway supported by several local stakeholders will recommend a site which will then be considered, given available local and other financial support. If Amtrak service were to terminate in the Quad Cities, an overnight storage track of sufficient length along with ample parking and certain other requirements covered elsewhere in the report would be required.

THIS WEEK: Judge Reuben Noble Praises the Iowa State Building at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition BACKGROUND: REUBEN NOBLE REUBEN NOBLE was born on the 14th of April, 1821, in Ada County, Mississippi, where his father was a farmer. When he was eighteen years of age, Noble began to study law and was admitted to the bar at twenty-one. In 1843, he came to Iowa, making his home at Garnavillo, in Clayton County. In 1854, Noble was elected to the legislature as a free soil Whig and upon the organization of the House was chosen Speaker, serving in the regular session of 1854 and extraordinary session of 1855. At the first Republican State Convention of 1856, he was placed at the head of the ticket for presidential elector. Four years later, he was a delegate to the National Convention that nominated Abraham Lincoln for president. Up to the time of the attempt of the Republicans to remove President Johnson by impeachment, Noble had been a prominent leader of that party. But approving of the policies of the President, he left the Republicans and from that time became a Democrat. In 1866, Noble was nominated by the Democrats for Representative in Congress but was defeated by William B. Allison. In 1886, he was one of the organizers of the Pioneer Lawmakers’ Association and was its first president, never missing a session during the remainder of his life. Noble was the leader of the bar of northeastern Iowa beginning in 1850. As a compliment to his high standing and eminent qualifications as a jurist, the citizens of the Tenth Judicial District elected him to tthe office of district judge in the fall of 1874. The field testing of the noncorrosive alternative deicing agent, calcium magnesium acetate is described. Seventy three tons were produced of one part CMA and three parts sand deicer which was field tested on I-280 from I-80 to the Mississippi River (7,000 ADT with 50% trucks). A comparative application was made with one part sand and one part sodium chloride. The study found that CMA deicer required a longer time for the pavement to reach normal conditions, and 20-25% more CMA deicer to provide the desired deicing. It was concluded that the CMA deicer was not as dependable as the sodium chloride deicing agent, and it was more difficult to clean up the equipment for spreading the CMA deicer.

Two Brisco Scour Monitors were installed on pier MS1 of the Mississippi River at Burlington in August 1991. No problems were encountered during the installation. The monitors consist of a probe resting on the river bottom fastened to a cable that wraps around a reel. An electrical system monitors the movement of the reel which transmits to a digital readout which shows whether scour has occurred. The intent was to monitor the digital readout twice a year during a four-year evaluation period. The scour monitor digital readouts malfunctioned frequently due to electrical storms. The scour monitor performance was completely unacceptable.
