Due to a combination of a vast agricultural industry and a tremendously growing technical textile industry, Ludvig Svensson identified India as target market for possible expansion through domestic production and supply. However, Svensson needed additional information about the industry structure and key players. Therefore, this project focused on a detailed analysis of the technical textile market and its players by following the international partner selection process. Thereby, five key players were identified as potential partners, as well as the need for additional research to determine alternative entry modes, as the market does not currently seem to be receptive for Svensson products.

In this paper we explore the determinants of firm start-up size of Spanish manufacturing industries. The industries' barriers to entry affect the ability of potential entrants to enter the markets and the size range at which they decide to enter. In order to examine the relationships between barriers to entry and size we applied the quantile regression techniques. Our results indicate that the variables that characterize the structure of the market, the variables that are related to the behaviour of the incumbent firms and the rate of growth of the industries generate different barriers depending on the initial size of the entrants. The relationship between competition and performance-related pay has been analysed in single-principal-single-agent models. While this approach yields good predictions for managerial pay schemes, the predictions fail to apply for employees at lower tiers of a firm's hierarchy. In this paper, a principal-multi-agent model of incentive pay is developed which makes it possible to analyze the effect of changes in the competitiveness of markets on lower tier incentive payment schemes. The results explain why the payment schemes of agents located at low and mid tiers are less sensitive to changes in competition when aggregated firm data is used. We consider entry of additional firms into the market for a single commodity in which both sellers and buyers are permitted to interact strategically. We show that the market is quasi-competitive, in that the inclusion of an additional seller lowers the price and increases the volume of trade, as expected. However, whilst buyers benefit from this change under reasonable conditions on preferences, we cannot conclude that sellers are always made worse off in the face of more intense competition, contrary to the conventional wisdom. We characterize the conditions under which entry by new sellers may raise the equilibrium profit of existing sellers, which will depend in an intuitive way on the elasticity of a strategic analog of demand and the market share of existing sellers, and encompass completely standard economic environments.

Second Change School programmes are active in a number of European countries. These schools offer vulnerable young adults an alternative opportunity to enhance their employability skills by alternating education with work experience. People enrolling in these programmes disengaged from schools at an early age. They already experienced or are at-risk to enter into unemployment. This paper examines the impact of the Second Chance Schools on their participants’ aspirations towards the labour market through skill-acquisition. We are able to identify the perception of Second Chance Schools’ interns regarding entry to the professional life. A third of them, for example, consider their attitude or their surroundings as a barrier preventing them from getting a job. However, our results emphasise the role of the interns’ coach in improving their aspirations towards the labour market. We also show that when compared to male interns, female interns have a stronger (positive) perception of the school as a place where they can gain skills.

Summary : Internal ribosome entry sites (IRES) are used by viruses as a strategy to bypass inhibition of cap-dependent translation that commonly results from viral infection. IRES are also used in eukaryotic cells to control mRNA translation under conditions of cellular stress (apoptosis, heat shock) or during the G2 phase of the cell cycle when general protein synthesis is inhibited. Variation in cellular expression levels has been shown to be inherited. Expression is controlled, among others, by transcriptional factors and by the efficiency of cap-mediated translation and ribosome activity. We aimed at identifying genomic determinants of variability in IRES-mediated translation of two representative IRES [Encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV) and X-linked Inhibitor-of-Apoptosis (XIAP) IRES]. We used bicistronic lentiviral constructions expressing two fluorescent reporter transgenes. Lentiviruses were used to transduce seven different laboratory cell lines and B lymphoblastoid cell lines from the Centre d'Etude du Polymorphisme Humain (CEPH; 15 pedigrees; n=209); representing an in vitro approach to family structure allowing genome scan analyses. The relative expression of the two markers was assessed by FACS. IRES efficiency varies according to cellular background, but also varies, for a same cell type, among individuals. The control of IRES activity presents an inherited component (h2) of 0.47 and 0.36 for EMCV and XIAP IRES, respectively. A genome scan identified a suggestive Quantitative Trait Loci (LOD 2.35) involved in the control of XIAP IRES activity. Résumé : Les sites internes d'entrée des ribosomes (IRES = internal ribosome entry sites) sont utilisés par les virus comme une stratégie afin d'outrepasser l'inhibition de traduction qui résulte communément d'une infection virale. Les IRES sont également utilisés par les cellules eucaryotes pour contrôler la traduction de l'ARN messager dans des conditions de stress cellulaire (apoptose, choc thermique) ou durant la phase G2 du cycle cellulaire, situations durant lesquelles la synthèse générale des protéines est inhibée. La variation des niveaux d'expression cellulaire de transcription est un caractère héréditaire. L'expression des gènes est contrôlée entre autre par les facteurs de transcription et par l'efficacité de la traduction initiée par la coiffe ainsi que par l'activité des ribosomes. Durant cette étude nous avons eu pour but d'identifier les déterminants génomiques responsables de la variabilité de la traduction contrôlée par l'IRES. Ceci a été effectué en étudiant deux IRES représentatifs : l'IRES du virus de l'encéphalomyocardite (EMCV) et l'IRES de l'inhibiteur de l'apoptose XIAP (X-linked Inhibitor-of-Apoptosis). Nous avons utilisés des lentivirus délivrant un transgène bicistronique codant pour deux gènes rapporteurs fluorescents. Ces lentivirus ont été utilisés pour transduire sept différentes lignées cellulaires de laboratoire et des lignées cellulaires lymphoblastoïdes B du Centre d'Etude du Polymorphisme Humain (CEPH; 15 pedigrees; n=209) qui représentent une approche in vitro de la structure familiale et qui permettent des analyses par balayage du génome. L'expression relative des deux marqueurs fluorescents a été analysée par FACS. Nos résultats montrent que l'efficacité des IRES varie en fonction du type de cellules. Il varie aussi, pour le même type de cellules, selon les individus. Le contrôle de l'activité de l'IRES est un caractère héritable (héritabilité h2) de 0.47 et 0.36 pour les IRES de EMCV et XIAP respectivement. Le balayage du génome a permis l'identification d'un locus à effets quantitatifs [QTL Quantitative Trait Loci (LOD 2.35)] impliqué dans le contôle de l'activité de l'IRES de XIAP.

This article enquires into the causes of union growth and decline by analysing flows in and out of membership at the level of 70 Swiss union locals over 2006-2008. Gross flows in union membership are much larger than the resulting net changes: annual membership turnover of 10 per cent is a surprisingly constant feature across unions. Net changes in membership are primarily determined by inflows: successful and languishing union locals differ in their entry rates, whereas exit rates are similar. Variance in union locals' entry rates is not usefully explained by the labour market context, but by differences in union strategy.

This paper provides a new benchmark for the analysis of the international diversi cation puzzle in a tractable new open economy macroeconomic model. Building on Cole and Obstfeld (1991) and Heathcote and Perri (2009), this model speci es an equilibrium model of perfect risk sharing in incomplete markets, with endogenous portfolios and number of varieties. Equity home bias may not be a puzzle but a perfectly optimal allocation for hedging risk. In contrast to previous work, the model shows that: (i) optimal international portfolio diversi cation is driven by home bias in capital goods, independently of home bias in consumption, and by the share of income accruing to labour. The model explains reasonably well the recent patterns of portfolio allocations in developed economies; and (ii) optimal portfolio shares are independent of market dynamics.

This pilot Health Impact Assessment (HIA) exercise was conducted as part of the ‘Policy Health Impact Assessment for the European Union’, commissioned by the European Commission ’s Directorate Generale Health and Consumer Protection (DG Sanco). The project is coordinated by Liverpool University and the research partners are from Ireland, Germany and the Netherlands. The aim of the European project is to develop a HIA methodology for assessing the health impacts of EU policies and activities. The purpose of the pilot HIA in Ireland was to test the methodology produced in the first phase of the project in 2002. The policy chosen for assessment was the European Employment Strategy. The Irish pilot used a range of methods suggested in the draft methodology but concentrated particularly on the participatory aspects of HIA. A key stakeholder group with knowledge of employment (including decision makers in labour market policy) was established to provide expert advice and support. Other methods used included policy analysis, information gathering from key informants, community profiling (including demographic and labour force data), data analysis, literature review, the production of a report and the development of recommendations.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the determinants of use internal or external labour market to fill a firm vacancy in SME’s taking into account the differences existing among blue and white collar jobs. Following different theories we can identify three main reasons for use internal candidates rather than external ones‐ firm specific knowledge, adverse selection problems and motivation‐. However, there are others factors that might affect this choice but the last theories don’t take into account. In this paper we try to shed some light on what are these other factors that may affect firm decision to use internal or external labour market. Particularly we analyses the relationship among new technologies, innovation activity and firm location on the staffing strategy. The results shows difference behaviour on the decision to fill a vacancy using internal or external labour markets between manufacturing and service firms, and this decision depends not only on firm internal characteristics, like technological complexity or innovation activity, but also on firm location. The results also support the hypothesis of ports of entry especially in the manufacturing sector.

This article provides a theoretical and empirical analysis of a firm's optimal R&D strategy choice. In this paper a firm's R&D strategy is assumed to be endogenous and allowed to depend on both internal firms. characteristics and external factors. Firms choose between two strategies, either they engage in R&D or abstain from own R&D and imitate the outcomes of innovators. In the theoretical model this yields three types of equilibria in which either all firms innovate, some firms innovate and others imitate, or no firm innovates. Firms'equilibrium strategies crucially depend on external factors. We find that the efficiency of intellectual property rights protection positively affects firms'incentives to engage in R&D, while competitive pressure has a negative effect. In addition, smaller firms are found to be more likely to become imitators when the product is homogeneous and the level of spillovers is high. These results are supported by empirical evidence for German .rms from manufacturing and services sectors. Regarding social welfare our results indicate that strengthening intellectual property protection can have an ambiguous effect. In markets characterized by a high rate of innovation a reduction of intellectual property rights protection can discourage innovative performance substantially. However, a reduction of patent protection can also increase social welfare because it may induce imitation. This indicates that policy issues such as the optimal length and breadth of patent protection cannot be resolved without taking into account specific market and firm characteristics. This contribution explores the role of international standards in the rules governing the internationalisation of the service economy. It analyses on a cross-institutional basis patterns of authority in the institutional setting of service standards in the European and Amercian context. The entry into force of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) in 1995 gave international standards a major role in harmonising the technical specifications of goods and services traded on the global market Despite the careful wording of the WTO, a whole range of international bodies still have the capacity to define generic as well as detailed technical specifications affecting how swelling offshore services are expected to be traded on worldwide basis. The analysis relies on global political economy approaches to identify constitutive patterns of authority mediating between the political and the economic spheres on a transnational space. It extends to the area of service standards the assumption that the process of globalisation is not opposing states and markets, but a joint expression of both of them including new patterns and agents of structural change through formal and informal power and regulatory practices. The paper argues that service standards reflect the significant development of a form of transnational hybrid authority, that blurs the distinction between private and public actors, whose scope spread all along from physical measures to societal values, and which reinforces the deterritorialisation of regulatory practices in contemporary capitalism. It provides evidence of this argument by analysing the current European strategy regarding service standardization in response to several programming mandate of the European Commission and the American views on the future development of service standards.
