Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the consistency and performance of radiologists interpreting breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations. Materials and Methods: Two test sets of eight cases comprising cancers, benign disease, technical problems and parenchymal enhancement were prepared from two manufacturers' equipment (X and Y) and reported by 15 radiologists using the recording form and scoring system of the UK MRI breast screening study [(MAgnetic Resonance Imaging in Breast Screening (MARIBS)]. Variations in assessments of morphology, kinetic scores and diagnosis were measured by assessing intraobserver and interobserver variability and agreement. The sensitivity and specificity of reporting performances was determined using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. Results: Intraobserver variation was seen in 13 (27.7%) of 47 of the radiologists' conclusions (four technical and seven pathological differences). Substantial interobserver variation was observed in the scores recorded for morphology, pattern of enhancement, quantification of enhancement and washout pattern. The overall sensitivity of breast MRI was high [88.6%, 95% confidence interval (CI) 77.4-94.7%], combined with a specificity of 69.2% (95% CI 60.5-76.7%). Proliferation of activated hepatic stellate cells (HSC) is an important event in the development of hepatic fibrosis. Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) has been shown to be mitogenic for HSC, but the intracellular signaling pathways involved have not been fully characterized. Thus, the aims of the current study were to examine the roles of the extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (P13-K) and p70-S6 kinase (p70-S6-K) signaling pathways in IGF-1- and platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF)-induced mitogenic signaling of HSC and to examine the potential crosstalk between these pathways. Both IGF-1 and PDGF increased ERK, P13-K and p70-S6-K activity. When evaluating potential crosstalk between these signaling pathways, we observed that P13-K is required for p70-S6-K activation by IGF-1 and PDGF, and is partially responsible for PDGF-induced ERK activation. PDGF and IGF-1 also increased the levels of cyclin D1 and phospho-glycogen synthase kinase-30. Coordinate activation of ERK, P13-K and p70-S6-K is important for perpetuating the activated state of HSC during fibrogenesis.

Objective - To review and summarise published data on medication errors in older people with mental health problems. Methods - A systematic review was conducted to identify studies that investigated medication errors in older people with mental health problems. MEDLINE, EMBASE, PHARMLINE, COCHRANE COLLABORATION and PsycINFO were searched electronically. Any studies identified were scrutinized for further references. The title, abstract or full text was systematically reviewed for relevance. Results - Data were extracted from eight studies. In total, information about 728 errors (459 administration, 248 prescribing, 7 dispensing, 12 transcribing, 2 unclassified) was available. The dataset related almost exclusively to inpatients, frequently involved non-psychotropics, and the majority of the errors were not serious. Conclusions - Due to methodology issues it was impossible to calculate overall error rates. Future research should concentrate on serious errors within community settings, and clarify potential risk factors.

SQUID magnetometry, normally used to characterise the properties of solids, was used to follow a clock reaction in solution, namely the auto-catalytic oxidation of [Co(ii)EDTA] by HO, in real time and it was shown that, in combination with other methods (e.g., magnetic resonance proton relaxation studies and UV-vis absorption analysis), SQUID magnetometry can be a powerful method in elucidating and interpreting the time-profile of chemical reactions so as long as reactants, intermediates and products have suitably large differences in their respective magnetic susceptibilities. © 2009 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

The effects of applied magnetic fields on the traveling wave formed by the reaction of (ethylenediaminetetraacetato)cobalt(II) (Co(II)EDTA2-) and hydrogen peroxide have been studied using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). It was found that the wave could be manipulated by applying pulsed magnetic field gradients to a sample contained in a vertical cylindrical tube in the 7.0 T magnetic field of the spectrometer. Transverse field gradients decelerated the propagation of the wave down the high-field side of the tube and accelerated it down the low-field side. This control of the wave propagation eventually promoted the formation of a finger on the low-field side of the tube and allowed the wave to be maneuvered within the sample tube. The origin of these effects is rationalized by considering the Maxwell stress arising from the combined homogeneous and inhomogeneous magnetic fields and the magnetic susceptibility gradient across the wave front.

The magnetic field dependence of the travelling wave formed during the reaction of (ethylenediaminetetraacetato)cobalt (II) (Co(II)EDTA2- ) and hydrogen peroxide was studied using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The reaction was investigated in a vertical tube, in which the wave was initiated from above. The wave propagated downwards, initially with a flat wavefront before forming a finger. Magnetic field effects were observed only once the finger had formed. The wave propagation was accelerated by a magnetic field with a negative gradient (i.e., when the field was stronger at the top of the tube than at the bottom) and slightly decelerated by positive field gradients.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the use of words on a restaurant menu, and to evaluate the impact that they have on the selection of menu items. The research comprised two distinct parts. First, four focus groups were held examining responses to five menus, each with the same menu items but using different wording. The results from the focus group analysis were used to develop a survey which was more widely distributed. From the focus group it was revealed that the occasion and participants in the dining experience influence the wording for menu item selection. Respondents discussed the mystique of the menu and confirmed a desire for menu items that would not normally be prepared at home. It was also of interest the "mouthwatering" effect that the words haw on potential customers and what a strong persuader these words were. The survey reinforced the focus group research in many ways, also stressing the positive effect of descriptive words such as "Tender'; "Golden" and "Natural" to the choice of menu items. The research has identified the importance of the choice and use of words in the design of a menu that operations management need to be aware of

Given the growing number of wrongful convictions involving faulty eyewitness evidence and the strong reliance by jurors on eyewitness testimony, researchers have sought to develop safeguards to decrease erroneous identifications. While decades of eyewitness research have led to numerous recommendations for the collection of eyewitness evidence, less is known regarding the psychological processes that govern identification responses. The purpose of the current research was to expand the theoretical knowledge of eyewitness identification decisions by exploring two separate memory theories: signal detection theory and dual-process theory. This was accomplished by examining both system and estimator variables in the context of a novel lineup recognition paradigm. Both theories were also examined in conjunction with confidence to determine whether it might add significantly to the understanding of eyewitness memory. ^ In two separate experiments, both an encoding and a retrieval-based manipulation were chosen to examine the application of theory to eyewitness identification decisions. Dual-process estimates were measured through the use of remember-know judgments (Gardiner & Richardson-Klavehn, 2000). In Experiment 1, the effects of divided attention and lineup presentation format (simultaneous vs. sequential) were examined. In Experiment 2, perceptual distance and lineup response deadline were examined. Overall, the results indicated that discrimination and remember judgments (recollection) were generally affected by variations in encoding quality and response criterion and know judgments (familiarity) were generally affected by variations in retrieval options. Specifically, as encoding quality improved, discrimination ability and judgments of recollection increased; and as the retrieval task became more difficult there was a shift toward lenient choosing and more reliance on familiarity. ^ The application of signal detection theory and dual-process theory in the current experiments produced predictable results on both system and estimator variables. These theories were also compared to measures of general confidence, calibration, and diagnosticity. The application of the additional confidence measures in conjunction with signal detection theory and dual-process theory gave a more in-depth explanation than either theory alone. Therefore, the general conclusion is that eyewitness identifications can be understood in a more complete manor by applying theory and examining confidence. Future directions and policy implications are discussed. ^

Jacquemontia reclinata House (Convolvulaceae) is a federally-listed endangered species endemic to coastal strand habitat of southeastern Florida, from Palm Beach to Miami-Dade counties. Although J. reclinata is currently defined as a species, its taxonomic distinctness has never been analyzed using phylogenetic evidence. In order to assess the evolutionary distinctness of J. reclinata and identify its closest relatives, internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions within nuclear ribosomal DNA were sequenced, and the sequence data was used to reconstruct a phylogeny of Jacquemontia. The study included the three putative relatives of J. reclinata and all other species within Jacquemontia known to occur in the Greater Antilles and Bahamas, except for three species. Results concur with previous morphological studies, which suggest that J. reclinata is closely related to J. cayensis Britton, J. curtisii Peter, and J. havanensis Urban. These three species and J. reclinata form an unresolved clade. Therefore, it is not certain which of these Caribbean species is sister to J. reclinata. The lack of resolution within the clade that includes J. reclinata implies that the taxa within the clade are evolutionarily similar. Future taxonomic studies of J. reclinata should focus in resolving relationships within the Jacquemontia reclinata clade.

Ocean acidification (OA) is the reduction in seawater pH due to the absorption of human-released CO2 by the world's oceans. The average surface oceanic pH is predicted to decline by 0.4 units by 2100. However, kelp metabolically modifies seawater pH via photosynthesis and respiration in some temperate coastal systems, resulting in daily pH fluctuations of up to ±0.45 units. It is unknown how these fluctuations in pH influence the growth and physiology of the kelp, or how this might change with OA. In laboratory experiments that mimicked the most extreme pH fluctuations measured within beds of the canopy-forming kelp Ecklonia radiata in Tasmania, the growth and photosynthetic rates of juvenile E. radiata were greater under fluctuating pH (8.4 in the day, 7.8 at night) than in static pH treatments (8.4, 8.1, 7.8). However, pH fluctuations had no effect on growth rates and a negative effect on photosynthesis when the mean pH of each treatment was reduced by 0.3 units. Currently, pH fluctuations have a positive effect on E. radiata but this effect could be reversed in the future under OA, which is likely to impact the future ecological dynamics and productivity of habitats dominated by E. radiata.
