An analysis was made of composition and content of nutrients, salts, particulate and dissolved organic matter, and various plankton groups in a series of samples collected by a 140-liter sampling bottle to depth up to 150 m at 4 equatorial stations between 97° and 154°W. Large and small phytoplankton, bacteria (aggregated and dispersed), heterotrophic flagellates, infusorians, radiolarians, foraminifers, fine filter-feeders, small and large, mostly herbivorous copepods, cyclopoids, predatory calanoids, and other predators were investigated separately. Trophic relations between these elements are established from personal and published data, and rate of their metabolism and some other physiological parameters are determined. Such functional characteristics as extent of satisfaction of food requirements of organisms belonging to various trophic groups, intensity of trophic relations, balance between production and consumption by individual elements of the community, ecological efficiency, and net and specific production of the groups distinguished, of individual trophic levels, of total zooplankton, and of the community as a whole are calculated. Variations of these characteristics along the equator with decreasing upwelling intensity are examined and their possible causes and mechanisms are discussed.

Biodiesel density is a key parameter in biodiesel simulations and process development. In this work we selected, evaluated and improved two density models, one theoretical (Rackett-Soave) and one empirical (Lapuerta's method) for methanol based biodiesels (FAME) and ethanol based biodiesel (FAEE). For this purpose, biodiesel was produced from vegetable oils (sunflower, rapeseed, soybean, olive, safflower and other two commercial mixtures of vegetable oils) and animal fats (edible and crude pork fat and beef tallow) using both methanol and ethanol for the transesterification reactions, and blended to get 21 FAME and 21 FAEE, reporting their density and detailed composition. Bibliographic data have also been used. The Rackett-Soave method has been improved by the use of a new acentric factor correlation, whereas the parameters of the empirical one are improved by considering a bigger density data bank. Results show that the evaluated models could be used to estimate the biodiesel density with a good grade of accuracy but the performed modifications improve the accuracy of the models: ARD (%) for FAME; 0.33, and FAEE; 0.26, both calculated with the modification of Rackett-Soave method and ARD (%) for FAME; 0.40 calculated with the modification of the Lapuerta's method).

Cryploendolithic microbial communities in the Ross Desert (McMurdo Dry Valleys) are characterized on the basis of photosymlictic microorganisms and fungi. Two eukaryotic communities (the lichen-dominated and Hemichloris communities) and three cyanobacterial communities (the red Gloeocapsa, Hormathonema-Gloeocapsa and Chroococcidiopsis communities) are described. Eleven coccoid. ohne pleurocapsoid, and five filamentous cyanobacteria occurring in these communities are characterized and illustrated. The moisture grade of the rock substrate seems to affect pH. Formation of primary iron stain, and the distribution of microbial communities.

Several bog manganese deposits were discovered in the Riding Mountain area in Manitoba during the spring and summer of 1940. A study was made of the known deposits to determine the grade of the occurrences, a possible source of the manganese oxides in the bog deposits and the possibilities of locating other manganese occurrences. Samples of the bog manganese, of spring waters from which the manganese oxides have apparently been precipitated, of the Odanah shale in which the deposits occur, and of "ironstone" nodules found in the Odanah and Riding Mountain shales were gathered in the field and later analyzed. In addition to chemical analyses of the above-mentioned samples, several polished sections of the manganese oxides were prepared and studied under the microscope, thin-sections of nodules were examined, and spectrographic analyses of both nodules and bog manganese were made. ...

Deep sea manganese nodules from the Southern Ocean have been studied using chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction, optical mineragraphic and electron probe microanalysis techniques. The nodules were lower in manganese, iron and associated elements than the average grade of manganese nodules from other localities. A number of chemical relationships have been observed. Nickel, copper, cobalt, barium, zinc, molybdenum, strontium, sulphur and phosphorus are associated with the manganese rich phases and titanium with the iron rich phases. X-ray diffraction analysis and electron probe microanalysis results indicate that the manganese phases are similar to the disordered delta-MnO2 and "manganite" phases reported by other workers.

As a result of a petrographical, mineralogical and geochemical characterization of the Ameghino Formation mudstones (Upper Jurassic- Lower Cretaceous, Antarctic Peninsula), "epiclastic" radiolaria-rich and mixed (radiolaria-rich + tuff) mudstone types were recognized. Contents of clastic material in the mudstones generally increase with younger paleontological age, but local exceptions to this trend have been found. The anoxic environment of the lower part of the sequence changes to more oxidizing conditions towards the top, in transition to the Hauterivian - Barrêmian conglomerates. Element to element correlations show good agreement with the normal differentiation trends of volcanic (andesite-rhyolite) rocks, suggesting that the overall sequence is mainly volcanic in origin with various grade of reworking. For example, the radiolaria-rich mudstone matrix could have been originated from very fine touffaceous suspensions deposited very slowly after the main fall of the tuffs. However, in the upper part of the sequence, some epiclastic supply is revealed by petrographic evidence and illite crystallinity index. The clay mineral association (illite, chlorite and illite-smectite mixed layers) is mainly of diagenetic origin in the stratigraphically lower sections. Low percentages of expandable layers in the illite-smectite mixed layers, as well as the general mineralogical association, suggest a late mesodiagenetic stage, and together with geological evidence, a relatively deep burial (> 1000 m - probably > 2500 m) and temperatures exceeding 100°C.

The number and grade of injured neuroanatomic structures and the type of injury determine the degree of impairment after a brain injury event and the recovery options of the patient. However, the body of knowledge and clinical intervention guides are basically focused on functional disorder and they still do not take into account the location of injuries. The prognostic value of location information is not known in detail either. This paper proposes a feature-based detection algorithm, named Neuroanatomic-Based Detection Algorithm (NBDA), based on SURF (Speeded Up Robust Feature) to label anatomical brain structures on cortical and sub-cortical areas. Themain goal is to register injured neuroanatomic structures to generate a database containing patient?s structural impairment profile. This kind of information permits to establish a relation with functional disorders and the prognostic evolution during neurorehabilitation procedures.

Accommodation is a first need and one of the most important decisions that university students have to decide taking into account their limited budget. The satisfaction grade of these students is the relevant aspect for the administrators and managers of the university residences, because it allows assuring the viability and sustainability of this kind of accommodation. In a situation of decline in rate of retention of students into the residence, coupled with an environment of economic crisis. Hence, of disposable income reduction, it seems essential to get to know what factors affect the motivation to remain into the university residence more than others when it comes to the final choice. The offer?s increase of different kind of accommodation is another variable to be considered when taking the decision related to the management of this kind of accommodation. Thus, there is the need to know which are the key factors and to obtain information about these variables in order to go deep into the relevance grade with the aim to pursue the strategic objectives, that will allow to improve the relationship with the customer and to respond to his accommodation? needs. This article researches the motivation elements that lead the students to remain in a university residence or to abandon it in exchange or a different accommodation, as per example shared flats or individual apartments. This research work intends to be useful for the university residence?s managers in order to increase its incomes, to raise the satisfaction degree among its residents and to obtain better end results in the management of these properties. The fieldwork conducted in the Residencia Universitaria Gómez Pardo (RUGP), Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM), for four semesters, which means students from 27 different grades (undergraduates) and 81 surveys finished, shows the following conclusions. Not only the relation with the residence?s personnel but also the quality and quantity of the feeding and the availability and quality of the internet service, constitute key factors when it comes to make the decision of remaining or of abandoning the residence when the semester comes to its end.

A recent study elaborated by Vicerrectorado de Ordenación Académica y Planificación Estratégica of Technical University of Madrid (UPM) defines the satisfaction of the university student body as "the response that the University offers to the expectations and demands of service of the students, considered in a general way ". Besides an indicator of academic and institutional insertion of the student, the assessment of student engagement allows us to adapt the academic offer and the extension services of the University to the real needs of the students. The process of convergence towards the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) raises the need to form in competitions, that is to say, of developing in our students capacities and knowledge beyond the purely theoretical-practical thing. Therefore, the perception and experience of the educational process and environment by the students is an important issue to be addressed to accomplish their expectations and achieve a curriculum accordingly to EHEA expectations. The present study aims to explore the student motivation and approval of the educational environment at the UPM. To this end a total of 97 students enrolled in the undergraduate program of Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering and Agronomic Engineering at UPM were surveyed. The survey consisted of 40 questions divided in three blocks. The first one of 20 questions of personal character in that they were gathering, besides the sex and the age, the degree of fulfilment, implication and dedication with the institution and the academic tasks. In the second block we identify 10 questions related to the perception of the student on the teaching quality, and finally a block of 10 questions regarding the Bologna Process. The students personal motivation was moderately high, with a score of 3.6 (all scores are provided on a 5-point scale), being the most valuable items obtaining a university degree (4,3) and the friendship between students (4,2). Any significant difference was shown between sexes (P=0.23) since the averages for this block of questions were of 3.7±0.3 and 3.5±0.4 for women and men respectively. The students are moderately satisfied with their graduate studies with an average score of 3,2, being the questions that reflect a minor satisfaction the research profile of the teachers (2,8) and the organization of the Schools (2,9). The best valued questions are related to the usefulness and quality of the degrees, with 3,5 and 3,4 respectively, and to the interest of the courses within the degree (3,4). For sexes, the results of this block of questions are similar (3.1±0.3 and 3.2±0.3 for men and women respectively=0.79). Also, there were no differences (P=0.39) between the students who arrange work and studies or do not work (3.1±0.2 and 3.2±0.3 respectively). In conclusion, students at UPM present an acceptable degree of motivation and satisfaction with regard to the studies and services that offer their respective Schools. Both characteristics receive the same value both for men and for women and so much for students who arrange work and studies as for those who devote themselves only to studying. In a significant way, students who are more engaged and are in-class attendants present the major degree of satisfaction.Overall, there is a great lack of information regarding the Bologna Process. In fact to the majority, they would like to know more on what it is, what it means and what changes will involve its implementation.

BACKGROUND: In this work, the influence of two regulated deficit irrigation (RDI) treatments and three different rootstocks on the quality of pistachios was evaluated by analyzing different parameters: morphological analysis, physicochemical analysis and sensory analysis. RESULTS: The results obtained in terms of the choice of rootstock revealed that Pistacia atlantica had increased production yields, nut weight, mineral content, higher intensities of characteristic sensory attributes and a higher degree of consumer satisfaction, than the other rootstocks studied. Moreover, the results established that the application of RDI on pistachio cultivation had no significant influence on production yield, weight, size, colour, water activity or mineral composition. Furthermore, T1 treatment (stem water potential?-1.3 MPa) resulted in higher intensities of characteristic sensory attributes and a greater level of satisfaction among international consumers. CONCLUSION: These results confirm that the application of deficit irrigation (T1) contributes to an increase in overall product quality. Furthermore, Pistacia atlantica rootstock provided better yield and quality than the other rootstocks studied. © 2014 Society of Chemical Industry

The F-box protein Skp2 (S-phase kinase-associated protein 2) positively regulates the G1-S transition by controlling the stability of several G1 regulators, such as the cell cycle inhibitor p27. We show here that Skp2 expression correlates directly with grade of malignancy and inversely with p27 levels in human lymphomas. To directly evaluate the potential of Skp2 to deregulate growth in vivo, we generated transgenic mice expressing Skp2 targeted to the T-lymphoid lineage as well as double transgenic mice coexpressing Skp2 and activated N-Ras. A strong cooperative effect between these two transgenes induced T cell lymphomas with shorter latency and higher penetrance, leading to significantly decreased survival when compared with control and single transgenic animals. Furthermore, lymphomas of Nras single transgenic animals often expressed higher levels of endogenous Skp2 than tumors of double transgenic mice. This study provides evidence of a role for an F-box protein in oncogenesis and establishes SKP2 as a protooncogene causally involved in the pathogenesis of lymphomas.

In light of the clinical importance of satisfaction in psychological assessments, the lack of research related to consultative assessment, and the absence of empirical methods to measure the satisfaction of referring professionals in consultative assessments, the Consultative Assessment Questionnaire (C-AQ) was developed. The measure assesses the satisfaction of the referring professional with a consultative assessment. It was created using a rational-empirical approach. Using confirmed perspective content analysis five initial scales were developed. This measure has many important research and clinical applications related to measuring the effectiveness of consultative assessments. The C-AQ will be further refined and validity data will be collected in a second phase of this project.

The very purpose of a recruiting software program is to help the management of organizations, primarily the HR department to keep track of the job applications. An applicant tracking system can reduce an organization's overall recruitment cost, increase productivity, and raise the level of satisfaction due to faster and better completion of transactions and services. This project analyzes four software providers to discover an applicant tracking system which best suits an organization's recruiting needs. The capstone also highlights that great success an organization can be achieved by significantly improving the delivery of its recruiting services to employees, managers and applicants. The adoption of a well managed applicant tracking system can support this goal.
