Plurilinguisme et construction des savoirs sous l'angle de diverses disciplines

The Plateforme Interdisciplinaire of the University of Lausanne is at the crossroad of soft and hard sciences. We question the place and the role of languages and scientific cultures in the construction and the transmission of knowledge. The examples - from the fields of law, health, mathematics, neurosciences and university education - exceed a conception of languages as transparent vehicles for ideas and discoveries. They enable to consider the diversity of languages and scientific cultures as a mean for a " thick standardization" of science, integrating and valuing the double need for conceptual depth and accessibility of scientific discourse.

Validade e confiabilidade do Inventário de Atitudes frente à Dor Crônica (IAD-28 itens) em lingua portuguesa

Trata-se da reavaliação da confiabilidade e validade do Inventário de Atitudes frente à Dor Crônica-versão breve, (IAD-breve) com 183 pacientes com dor crônica não oncológica. O IAD-breve 28 itens avalia as crenças sobre dor crônica relacionadas ao controle, emoção, solicitude, cura médica, dano físico, incapacidade e medicação. A análise mostrou sete domínios e 28 itens. Houve diferenças na alocação de dois itens e, após análises, optou-se por retirá-los. Quatro domínios apresentaram valores de alfa de Cronbach considerados bons (entre 0,74 e 0,85) e em três, foram moderados (entre 0,58 e 0,65). O IAD-breve 28 itens em língua portuguesa é superior à primeira versão.

The development of intercultural awareness and changes of beliefs: the effects of studying abroad on learners of English as a second language

The present study examines the development of interculturality and changes of beliefs, by analyzing 106 compositions produced by 53 advanced level university students of translation studies at a university in Spain before and shortly after a stay-abroad (SA) period. The study draws on data collected at two different times: before (T1) and after the SA (T3). In addition, we compared the results with the writings produced by a control group of 10 native English speakers on SA too. Data were collected by means of a composition which tried to elicit the learners’ opinion about cultural habits maintenance. The results reveal significant changes between T1 and T3 in the degree of better attitudes and intercultural acquisition.

Late bloomer or language impaired? Screening the speech of a Spanish-English bilingual toddler for early signs of language impairment

This case study presents corpus data gathered from a Spanish-English bilingual child with expressive language delay. Longitudinal data on the child’s linguistic development was collected from the onset of productive speech at age 1;1 until age 4 over the course of 28 video-taped sessions with the child’s principal caregivers. A literature review focused on the relationship between language delay and persisting disorders—including a discussion of the frequent difficulty in distinguishing between the two at early stages of bilingual development—is followed by an analysis of the child’s productive development in 2 distinct phases. An attempt is made to assess the child’s speech at age 4 for preliminary signs of SLI and to consider techniques for identifying ‘at risk’ bilingual children (that is, those with productive language delay, poor oral fluency, and family history of language problems) based on samples of recorded and transcribed speech.

Productivity Growth during the English Industrial Revolution: A Dual Approach

This paper presents new estimates of total factor productivity growth in Britain for the period 1770-1860. We use a dual technique recently popularized by Hsieh (1999), and argue that the estimates we derive from factor prices are of similar quality to quantity-based calculations. Our results provide further evidence, derived from this independent set of sources, that productivity growth during the British Industrial Revolution was relatively slow. During the years 1770-1800, TFP growth was close to zero, according to our estimates. The period 1800-1830 experienced an acceleration of productivity growth. The Crafts-Harley view of the Industrial Revolution is thus reinforced. We also consider alternative explanations of slow productivity growth, and reject the interpretation that focuses on the introduction of steam as a general purpose technology.

Iowa's English Literacy Pilot Project, 2001

The Iowa Department of Education, in collaboration with CASAS, initiated an English Literacy Pilot project during program Year 2001 (July 1, 2001- June 30, 2002). The overall goal of the project is to research and identify promising instructional strategies and curriculum offerings designed to meet the unique learning needs of Iowa's adult immigrant target populations.

Alfabetização de Crianças CAboverdianas em Lingua Portuguesa como Lingua não Materna

Cabo Verde é um país de características bilingue, onde coexistem duas línguas: a Língua Materna – o Crioulo de Cabo Verde (CCV) ou a Língua Caboverdiana (LCV) e a Língua Não Materna – o Português que é a língua oficial e, portanto, a língua utilizada no processo de ensino e de aprendizagem. Esta situação gera conflitos tanto a nível linguístico como a nível cultural. As duas línguas apresentam algumas semelhanças lexicais, o que conduz, muitas vezes, a equívocos e erros linguísticos que dificultam a criança na aprendizagem, em particular, da leitura que constitui a base para a aprendizagem de outros saberes. A aprendizagem da leitura, na Língua Não Materna, requer um desenvolvimento da linguagem oral em Língua Portuguesa, para que o raciocínio da criança seja estimulado através de exercícios lúdicos e abordagens cognitivistas e construtivistas. Deste modo, as competências de processamento fonológico na aquisição das competências da leitura são importantes para a discriminação do texto escrito e favorecem a aprendizagem e o desenvolvimento da leitura. A criança, através da descoberta, começa a elaborar conceitos no sentido de conseguir realizar de forma funcional a sua relação com a língua escrita.

Epidemia de VIH nos Paises de Lingua Oficial Portuguesa

Este documento, ainda que de modo bastante sumarizado, contempla aspectos relativos à situação da epidemia do VIH em países lusófonos (Angola, Brasil, Cabo Verde, Guiné-Bissau, Moçambique, Portugal, São Tomé e Príncipe e Timor Leste). Registra progressos observados durante os últimos anos, resultados acumulados desde o início da epidemia e sinaliza perspectivas em direção ao futuro em função dos compromissos políticos internacionais ratificados pelos países-membros da CPLP, com ênfase àqueles relacionados ao acesso universal à prevenção, tratamento e cuidados no campo da infecção pelo VIH.

O Caboverdiano: Uma Lingua Mundial

Este artigo pretende até que ponto a génese e a vida o idioma caboverdiano estão ligados ao fenómeno da globalização
