A Position Paper for the Professions Allied to Medicine Patients with cancer are living longer due to early diagnosis and better treatment. In recent years there has been increasing attention to issues related to the quality of life of patients with cancer and a recognition of the potential for habilitation and rehabilitation. As a result, PAMs as members of the multi-disciplinary team are now more actively involved with patients diagnosed with cancer during all phases of their disease. Each person’s life possesses a unique blend of psychological, social, economic and physical factors and comprehensive care requires the needs of the whole person to be addressed. This requires patients and carers having timely access to the most appropriate range of professional skills that will allow individual patients and their carers to retain control of their lives and associated circumstances for as long as possible. It also requires professions, in all locations, to work in a collaborative patient centred manner that affords the best outcome for patients. The need has been highlighted for a multi-professional approach to the delivery of cancer services in “Investing for the Future” and “A Framework for the Multi-professional Contribution to Cancer Care in Northern Ireland”. The Conference took place on May 30th, 2002 in the Royal Marine Hotel, Dun Laoigaire. It attracted over 250 delegates from across the statutory, voluntary and private sectors and the interest that was expressed in the Conference was indicative of the growing recognition of the importance of establishing a more co-ordinated way of conducting health and social care assessments for older people. The Conference provided the opportunity to both discuss the necessity for a standardised approach to conducting assessments and to explore the merits of establishing a national framework for the multi-disciplinary assessment of older people’s health and social care needs and preferences. La investigación Condiciones para una arquitectura radical se ha desarrollado en el marco de la beca FI 2009-12; y también incluye una beca de movilidad BE-DGR 2009 por un período de seis meses de 2010 en Princeton University School of Architecture. Condiciones para una arquitectura radical tiene un objetivo general: trabajar las relaciones entre límite, experiencia y comunidad a partir de dos pilares: arte y tecnología. Son tres familias de conceptos y sus articulaciones complejas en el espacio común: para definir en última instancia, otros procesos posibles de gestión en la ciudad. La lucha ideológica está en pensar cual debería ser el futuro de las ciudades. El objetivo concreto de la tesis es la búsqueda de herramientas para abrir nuevos espacios en la ciudad donde materializar un cambio social y urbano. Para entender esta aproximación la investigación indaga en los momentos de acercamiento y simbiosis de la arquitectura a las tesis del arte y la tecnología: una mirada atenta a las condiciones de contexto. Se explora el cruce de algunas ideas emancipadoras que se formularon en diferentes momentos de la cultura - desde las vanguardias históricas hasta ahora- en los que se intuyó la importancia del sistema abierto -el paso del objeto al proceso- y su trasposición en arquitectura: una arquitectura y un urbanismo open source; son episodios en los que ha existido un cuestionamiento de las fronteras disciplinares y un interés por la apropiación convivencial de lo público. Algunas de aquellas ideas pueden repetirse en el contexto activo de unas nuevas condiciones.

The protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding has been identified in many national policy documents as a major public health issue. Breastfeeding offers mothers and babies significant health advantages both in the short term and throughout their lives.From a health policy point of view, it is generally agreed that the better health afforded by breastfeeding can result in major savings in the provision of health care. Studies have also shown that breastfeeding has a positive effect on the wider economy with fewer days being lost by employed parents of breastfed babies to illness. Although progress is being made in promoting and supporting this health enhancing, environmentally friendly and low-cost feeding option, breastfeeding rates in Ireland continue to be among the lowest in Europe. This Strategic Action Plan has been developed by a Ministerial appointed, multi-disciplinary National Committee on Breastfeeding, in consultation with relevant stakeholders, to further promote breastfeeding among all sectors of the population and particularly among those currently least likely to breastfeed. Because of its secluded character the prison world is the object of distorted perceptions and a vivid imagery, which applies as well and probably, even to a very high degree to both gender and religion. Based on empirical data collected in two Swiss prisons, this article concentrates on two main topics: firstly, the authors describe the ways in which religiosity is expressed and practiced in prison by male and female inmates. Secondly, they comment on the social functions that inmates attribute to religion in prison. If men and women understand and practice religion in a similar manner, on the contrary, it appears that they attribute differentiated function to religion. After sketching out their methodological approach and briefly present their data, the authors connect their findings to the idea that if the institution determines to a large extent the differences in religiosity, the institution itself is organized according to a gendered logic and thereby also promotes a gendered relation to religion.

In this report for the Medico Social Research Board the author provides an overview of the drug problem in Dublin's inner city. On 12-14 July 1982 the author visited the Sean Mac Dermott street area of the inner city, the Eastern Health Board, Coolmine Community, Jervis Street Drug Advisory and Treatment Centre and the Garda drug squad. From these interviews, the author concludes that Dublin's inner city has a serious problem with drug use, in particular the injecting of heroin. Heroin addicts steal on a regular basis to fund their habit, and frequently inject themselves in public spaces of local authority flat complexes. Despite the best efforts of the support services (Social workers, doctors, Gardai and clergy) there is a high prevalence of injecting heroin use. There has also been abuse of prescription services. Addicts frequently seek opiates from a small number of doctors who are willing to prescribe. Drug education is severely lacking or inappropriate, according to the author, and the Garda drug squad is severely over stretched. While cannabis use is said to be prevalent in Dublin's two universities, drug use has been most problematic in the deprived parts of the city. The author presents the drug epidemic, which has developed over the last two years, in moral terms, and wonders if Christian society, in particular the Catholic Church, and the health authorities can do anything to stop the crisis from worsening. Recommendations include; conducting epidemiological surveys to determine the true extent of the problem, cross disciplinary co-operation, greater drug awareness through education, and more rehabilitation units.This resource was contributed by The National Documentation Centre on Drug Use.

La Generalitat de Catalunya, com a projecte de millores dins l'ensenyament, ha decidit preparar una implementació d'un sistema de gestió d'amonestacions i sancions en els centres educatius. Aquest sistema, serà un complement d'altres gestions ja existents als centres educatius, els quals tenen altres funcions diferents a la que es pretén al nou projecte. Aquest treball final de carrera és una proposta per donar una solució vàlida a les necessitats esmentades i cobrint totes les especificacions tècniques, incloses al plec tècnic de condicions.

La Generalitat de Catalunya ha decidit obrir concurs públic per rebre propostes sobre el disseny d'una BD que els hi serveixi de magatzem d'informació per a la futura aplicació de gestió d'amonestacions i sancions en centres educatius d'ensenyament secundari. El marc de la col·laboració se centrarà només en el disseny de la BD en una primera fase del pla de sistemes d'informació de la Generalitat de Catalunya. A nivell general, aquest projecte pretén guardar la informació dels alumnes matriculats (núm. expedient, dades personals i de contacte, etc.), dels cursos on estan matriculats i dels professors que imparteixen aquests cursos (incloent la informació sobre quins són els tutors de cada grup i els horaris d'atenció als pares). Tota aquesta informació es gestionarà a través de cadascú dels diferents instituts d'ensenyament de Catalunya. Amb la informació abans esmentada, el sistema ha de permetre introduir les incidències o amonestacions dels alumnes, indicant-ne les seves dades necessàries (alumne, data, hora, tipus d'incidència, professor, si s'ha comunicat als pares, etc.). En cas de tenir una amonestació prou greu o una acumulació d'amonestacions s'ha de poder introduir una sanció indicant els motius i la resolució de la mateixa. El sistema a dissenyar ha de permetre emmagatzemar tota la informació comentada anteriorment i permetre generar les consultes més habituals que es realitzen. Adicionalment a aquest funcionament, la base de dades s'haurà d'encarregar de precalcular i emmagatzemar diversa informació estadística, tal i com es detalla més endavant en els requisits del mòdul estadístic.

El treball se centra en desenvolupar un sistema informàtic que serveixi com a magatzem d'informació per a una futura aplicació de gestió d'amonestacions i sancions en centres educatius d'ensenyament secundari dependents de la Generalitat de Catalunya i implica tant el disseny com la implementació de la base de dades. L'aplicació concreta de gestió, però, resta fora de l'àmbit d'aquest treball. El projecte permet, mitjançant procediments emmagatzemats, efectuar les funcionalitats principals del sistema: inserir, esborrar i/o modificar dades; a més, proporciona diversa informació estadística.

El TFC consiste en diseñar e implementar una base de datos para ser utilizada por la Generalitat de Cataluña y que permita a esta, mediante una aplicación que se conecte a ella y sirva de capa de negocio e interfaz con el usuario, gestionar las amonestaciones y sanciones en los centros educativos de la comunidad.
