The present work is focused on the synthesis and characterization of novel materials for hemodialysis applications. Cellulose acetate was chosen as base polymer for the preparation of porous Mixed Matrix Membrane adsorbers (MMMAs) and for the synthesis of hybrid ultrafiltration membranes. Hemodialysis is a renal replacement therapy used to eliminate, the waste products and excess fluids accumulating in the blood of people affected by an end stage renal disease. The main environmental drawback associated to it is the large water consumption. The MMMAs were prepared with the porpoise of eliminating waste metabolites (uremic toxins) from the spent dialysate solution, with the prospective limiting the consumption of water related to the process. Batch tests of MMMAs showed that the removal of uric acid is almost complete while the one of urea and creatinine is limited to a 20/30 %. The thinking behind the concept of MMMAs was aimed to develop a small a lab scale chromatographic cartridge to continuously remove uremic toxins from an aqueous feed solution. The cartridge was packed with MMMAs and tested with a mixture of toxins. Experiments results shown a promising removal capability of the system even if the necessity of a higher surface area to achieve better efficiency is denoted. The other important issue related to hemodialysis is the assessment of an overall mass transfer rates in hemodialyzers. The mass transfer correlations proposed in literature do not take into account the effect of permeation and are developed for turbulent flow regime. Therefore, hybrid cellulose acetate/Silica ultrafiltration membranes were prepared to characterize a surrogate system of an artificial kidney (AK) in terms of fluid mechanics and mass transfer. The effect of surface roughness and suction on the velocity profiles was determined and a new dimensionless mass transfer correlation accounting for permeation was developed.

ABSTRACT The objective of the project is the utilization of waste heat from low thermal refinery streams and its subsequent transformation into electrical energy through the application of Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC). This process is similar to Rankine’s basic cycle but instead of water it uses a heavier molecular organic fluid. This type of cycles can be put into use to recover heat from low temperature sources. The heat transforms into useful energy that is converted into electricity. The working principle of the Organic Rankine Cycle is an active fluid in liquid phase which is pumped into a boiler where it evaporates and, after passing through a turbine, it condenses once more restarting the whole cycle over again. Before choosing the ORC technologies, a study was conducted on those products available in the market and an analysis of the waste streams in the refinery was also carried out. Having chosen the technologies, a feasibility study was performed on the use of ORC cycles for the re-utilization of waste energy in the refinery. The results confirmed that the use of ORC cycles is profitable, making it attractive from an economical, technical and environmental point of view.

The green lacewing Ceraeochrysa smithi (Neuroptera, Chrysopidae), like other members of its family, lays its eggs on stalks, but it is unusual in that it coats these stalks with droplets of an oily fluid. The liquid consists of a mixture of fatty acids, an ester, and a series of straight-chain aldehydes. Relative to the eggs of a congeneric chrysopid that lacks stalk fluid, the eggs of C. smithi proved well protected against ants. Components of the fluid, in an assay with a cockroach, proved potently irritant. Following emergence from the egg, C. smithi larvae imbibe the stalk fluid, thereby possibly deriving nutritive benefit, defensive advantage, or both.

The electronic properties of liquid ammonia are investigated by a sequential molecular dynamics/quantum mechanics approach. Quantum mechanics calculations for the liquid phase are based on a reparametrized hybrid exchange-correlation functional that reproduces the electronic properties of ammonia clusters [(NH(3))(n); n=1-5]. For these small clusters, electron binding energies based on Green's function or electron propagator theory, coupled cluster with single, double, and perturbative triple excitations, and density functional theory (DFT) are compared. Reparametrized DFT results for the dipole moment, electron binding energies, and electronic density of states of liquid ammonia are reported. The calculated average dipole moment of liquid ammonia (2.05 +/- 0.09 D) corresponds to an increase of 27% compared to the gas phase value and it is 0.23 D above a prediction based on a polarizable model of liquid ammonia [Deng , J. Chem. Phys. 100, 7590 (1994)]. Our estimate for the ionization potential of liquid ammonia is 9.74 +/- 0.73 eV, which is approximately 1.0 eV below the gas phase value for the isolated molecule. The theoretical vertical electron affinity of liquid ammonia is predicted as 0.16 +/- 0.22 eV, in good agreement with the experimental result for the location of the bottom of the conduction band (-V(0)=0.2 eV). Vertical ionization potentials and electron affinities correlate with the total dipole moment of ammonia aggregates. (c) 2008 American Institute of Physics.

Computational mechanics reveals nanosecond time correlations in molecular dynamics of liquid systems
Resumo:
Statistical complexity, a measure introduced in computational mechanics has been applied to MD simulated liquid water and other molecular systems. It has been found that statistical complexity does not converge in these systems but grows logarithmically without a limit. The coefficient of the growth has been introduced as a new molecular parameter which is invariant for a given liquid system. Using this new parameter extremely long time correlations in the system undetectable by traditional methods are elucidated. The existence of hundreds of picosecond and even nanosecond long correlations in bulk water has been demonstrated. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A combined and sequential use of Monte Carlo simulations and quantum mechanical calculations is made to analyze the spectral shift of the lowest pi-pi* transition of phenol in water. The solute polarization is included using electrostatic embedded calculations at the MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ level giving a dipole moment of 2.25 D, corresponding to an increase of 76% compared to the calculated gas-phase value. Using statistically uncorrelated configurations sampled from the MC simulation,first-principle size-extensive calculations are performed to obtain the solvatochromic shift. Analysis is then made of the origin of the blue shift. Results both at the optimized geometry and in room-temperature liquid water show that hydrogen bonds of water with phenol promote a red shift when phenol is the proton-donor and a blue shift when phenol is the proton-acceptor. In the case of the optimized clusters the calculated shifts are in very good agreement with results obtained from mass-selected free jet expansion experiments. In the liquid case the contribution of the solute-solvent hydrogen bonds partially cancels and the total shift obtained is dominated by the contribution of the outer solvent water molecules. Our best result, including both inner and outer water molecules, is 570 +/- 35 cm(-1), in very good agreement with the small experimental shift of 460 cm(-1) for the absorption maximum.

The nuclear isotropic shielding constants sigma((17)O) and sigma((13)C) of the carbonyl bond of acetone in water at supercritical (P=340.2 atm and T=673 K) and normal water conditions have been studied theoretically using Monte Carlo simulation and quantum mechanics calculations based on the B3LYP/6-311++G(2d,2p) method. Statistically uncorrelated configurations have been obtained from Monte Carlo simulations with unpolarized and in-solution polarized solute. The results show that solvent effects on the shielding constants have a significant contribution of the electrostatic interactions and that quantitative estimates for solvent shifts of shielding constants can be obtained modeling the water molecules by point charges (electrostatic embedding). In supercritical water, there is a decrease in the magnitude of sigma((13)C) but a sizable increase in the magnitude of sigma((17)O) when compared with the results obtained in normal water. It is found that the influence of the solute polarization is mild in the supercritical regime but it is particularly important for sigma((17)O) in normal water and its shielding effect reflects the increase in the average number of hydrogen bonds between acetone and water. Changing the solvent environment from normal to supercritical water condition, the B3LYP/6-311++G(2d,2p) calculations on the statistically uncorrelated configurations sampled from the Monte Carlo simulation give a (13)C chemical shift of 11.7 +/- 0.6 ppm for polarized acetone in good agreement with the experimentally inferred result of 9-11 ppm.
