We report the microwave dielectric properties and photoluminescence of undoped and europium oxide doped Ta(2)O(5) fibers, grown by laser heated pedestal growth technique. The effects of Eu(2)O(3) doping (1-3 mol %) on the structural, optical, and dielectric properties were investigated. At a frequency of 5 GHz, the undoped material exhibits a dielectric permittivity of 21 and for Eu(2)O(3) doped Ta(2)O(5) samples it increases, reaching up to 36 for the highest doping concentration. Nevertheless, the dielectric losses maintain a very low value. For this wide band gap oxide, Eu(3+) optical activation was achieved and the emission is observed up to room temperature. Thus, the transparency and high permittivity make this material promising for electronic devices and microwave applications. (c) 2008 American Institute of Physics.

In the title compound, C(11)H(7)NO(4), there is a dihedral angle of 45.80 (7)degrees between the planes of the benzene and maleimide rings. The presence of O-H...O hydrogen bonding and weak C-H...O interactions allows the formation of R (3) 3(19) edge-connected rings parallel to the (010) plane. Structural, spectroscopic and theoretical studies were carried out. Density functional theory (DFT) optimized structures at the B3LYP/6-311 G(d,p) and 6-31++G(d,p) levels are compared with the experimentally determined molecular structure in the solid state. Additional IR and UV theoretical studies allowed the presence of functional groups and the transition bands of the system to be identified.

Three new bimetallic oxamato-based magnets with the proligand 4,5-dimethyl-1,2-phenylenebis-(oxamato) (dmopba) were synthesized using water or dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) as solvents. Single crystal X-ray diffraction provided structures for two of them: [MnCu(dmopba)(H(2)O)(3)]n center dot 4nH(2)O (1) and [MnCu(dmopba)(DMSO)(3)](n center dot)nDMSO (2). The crystalline structures for both 1 and 2 consist of linearly ordered oxamato-bridged Mn(II)Cu(II) bimetallic chains. The magnetic characterization revealed a typical behaviour of ferrimagnetic chains for 1 and 2. Least-squares fits of the experimental magnetic data performed in the 300-20 K temperature range led to J(MnCu) = -27.9 cm(-1), g(Cu) = 2.09 and g(Mn) = 1.98 for 1 and J(MnCu) = -30.5 cm(-1), g(Cu) = 2.09 and g(Mn) = 2.02 for 2 (H = -J(MnCu)Sigma S(Mn, i)(S(Cu, i) + S(Cu, i-1))). The two-dimensional ferrimagnetic system [Me(4)N](2n){Co(2)[Cu(dmopba)](3)}center dot 4nDMSO center dot nH(2)O (3) was prepared by reaction of Co(II) ions and an excess of [Cu(dmopba)](2-) in DMSO. The study of the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility as well as the temperature and field dependences of the magnetization revealed a cluster glass-like behaviour for 3.

The objective of this work was to develop and validate a rapid Reversed-Phase High-Performance Liquid Chromatography method for the quantification of 3,5,3 '-triiodothyroacetic acid (TRIAC) in nanoparticles delivery system prepared in different polymeric matrices. Special attention was given to developing a reliable reproductive technique for the pretreatment of the samples. Chromatographic runs were performed on an Agilent 1200 Series HPLC with a RP Phenomenex (R) Gemini C18 (150 x 4, 6 mm i.d., 5 mu m) column using acetonitrile and triethylamine buffer 0.1% (TEA) (40 : 60 v/v) as a mobile phase in an isocratic elution, pH 5.6 at a flow rate of 1 ml min(-1). TRIAC was detected at a wavelength of 220 nm. The injection volume was 20 mu l and the column temperature was maintained at 35 degrees C. The validation characteristics included accuracy, precision, specificity, linearity, recovery, and robustness. The standard curve was found to have a linear relationship (r(2) - 0.9996) over the analytical range of 5-100 mu g ml(-1) . The detection and quantitation limits were 1.3 and 3.8 mu g ml(-1), respectively. The recovery and loaded TRIAC in colloidal system delivery was nearly 100% and 98%, respectively. The method was successfully applied in polycaprolactone, polyhydroxybutyrate, and polymethylmethacrylate nanoparticles.

We report on the detection of the transport Barkhausen-like noise (TBN) in polycrystalline samples of Bi(1.65)Pb(0.35)Sr(2)Ca(2) Cu(3)O(10+delta) (Bi-2223) which were subjected to different uniaxial compacting pressures. The transport Barkhausen-like noise was measured when the sample was subjected to an ac triangular-shape magnetic field (f similar to 1 Hz) with maximum amplitude B(max) approximate to 5.5 mT, in order to avoid the flux penetration within the superconducting grains. Analysis of the TBN signal, measured for several values of excitation current density, indicated that the applied magnetic field in which the noise signal first appears, B(a)(t(i)), is closely related to the magnetic-flux pinning capability of the material. The combined results are consistent with the existence of three different superconducting levels within the samples: (i) the superconducting grains; (ii) the superconducting clusters; and (iii) the weak-links. We finally argue that TBN measurements constitute a powerful tool for probing features of the intergranular transport properties in polycrystalline samples of high-T(c) superconductors. The pentadentate H(3)bhci [1,3,5-trideoxy-1,3-bis((2-hydroxybenzyl)amino)-cis-inistol] and its bifunctionalized analogue H(3)bhci-glu-H [1,3,5-trideoxy-1,3-bis((2-hydroxybenzyl)amino)-5-glutaramido-cis-inositol] were synthesized, and their coordination chemistry was investigated with inactive rhenium, with no carrier added Re-188 and with carrier added Re-186. The neutral Re(V) complexes [ReO-(bhci)] and [ReO(bhci-glu-H)] are formed in good yields starting from [ReOCl3(P(C6H5)(3))(2)] or in quantitative yield directly from [(ReO4)-Re-186/188](-) in aqueous solution by reduction with Sn(II) or Sn(0). The X-ray structures of [ReO(bhci)] and [ReO(bhci-glu-H)] were elucidated revealing pentadentate side on coordination of the ligands to the Re=O core. The basic cyclohexane frame adopts a chair form in the case of [ReO(bhci)] and a twisted boat form in the case of [ReO(bhci-glu-H)]. [ReO(bhci)] crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/c with a = 27.425(3), b = 14.185(1), c = 19.047(2) Angstrom, and beta = 103.64(2)degrees and [ReO(bhci-glu-H)] in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/c with a = 13.056(3), b = 10.180(1), c = 22.378(5) Angstrom and beta = 98.205(9)degrees Both Re-188 complexes are stable in human serum for at least 3 days without decomposition. After injection into mice, [ReO(bhci-glu)](-) is readily excreted through the intestines, while [ReO(bhci)] is excreted by intestines, liver, and the kidneys. TLC investigations of the urine showed exclusively the complexes [ReO(bhci-glu-H)] and [ReO(bhci)], respectively, and no decomposition products. For derivatization of antibodies, the carboxylic group of [ReO(bhci-glu-H)] was activated with N-hydroxysuccinimide, which required unusually vigorous reaction conditions (heating). The anti colon cancer antibody mAb-35 [IgG and F(ab')(2) fragment] was labeled with [(ReO)-Re-186/188(bhci-glu)] to a specific activity of up to 1.5 mCi/mg (55 MBq/mg) with full retention of immunoreactivity. Labeling yields followed pseudo-first-order kinetics in antibody concentration with the ratio of rates between aminolysis and hydrolysis being about 2. Biodistributions of Re-186-labeled intact mAb-35 as well as of its F(ab')(2) fragment in tumor-bearing nude mice revealed good uptake by the tumor with only low accumulation of radioactivity in normal tissue.

Background The objective of this study was to evaluate the early results of the laparoscopic interposition of a segment of ileum associated with a sleeve gastrectomy (LII-SG) in order to treat patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and BMI <35. Data regarding morbidly obese diabetic patients subjected to surgery has consistently been validated. To date, there is scarce information about morbidity and mortality related to the surgical treatment of a ""true"" typical diabetic population with BMI <35. Methods The procedures were performed in 454 patients (322 male, 132 female). Mean age was 53.6 +/- 8 years (range = 27-75). Mean BMI was 29.7 +/- 3.6 kg/m(2) (range = 19-34.8). All patients had the diagnosis of T2DM for at least 3 years. Insulin therapy was used by 45.6% of patients. Mean duration of T2DM was 10.8 +/- 5.9 years (range = 3-35). Mean hemoglobin A(1c) was 8.8 +/- 1.9%. Dyslipidemia was observed in 78.4%, hypertension in 64.8%, nephropathy in 28.6%, retinopathy in 32.6%, neuropathy in 34.6%, and coronary heart disease in 13%. Results There was no conversion to open surgery. All patients were evaluated postoperatively. Mortality was 0.4%. There were 29 major complications (6.4%) in 22 patients (4.8%) and 51 minor complications (11.2%). Reoperations were performed on 8 patients (1.7%). Twenty patients (4.4%) were readmitted to the hospital. Mean postoperative BMI was 25.8 +/- 3.5 kg/m(2). Mean fasting plasma glucose decreased from 198 +/- 69 to 128 +/- 67 mg/dl and mean postprandial plasma glucose decreased from 262 +/- 101 to 136 +/- 43 mg/dl. Conclusions The laparoscopic ileal interposition associated with a sleeve gastrectomy was considered a safe operation with low rates of morbidity and mortality in a diabetic population with BMI < 35. An early control of postprandial glycemia was observed.

This study aims to review the experience, at an institution, with patients who suffered electrical burns and study the peculiar characteristics of this type of burn as well as its complications and epidemiological aspects. The study includes medical records of patients with electrical burns who were admitted to the Burn Unit of Hospital das Clinicas in Sao Paulo, Brazil, from November 2001 to October 2006. They were classified into four categories: high voltage (>= 1000 V), low voltage (<1000 V), `flash burn` (in which there is no electrical current flow through the body of the patient) and burns caused by lightning. The complications were more severe and common in the high-voltage group, while longer hospital stays and more complex surgical procedures due to the greater depth of burns were also observed in this group. High-voltage burns are mainly labour-/occupation-related. The majority of the patients were young men at the beginning of their professional lives. This factor generates an important socio-economic impact due to the high incidence of sequelae, resulting in amputations, rendering them unable to maintain their occupations. alpha(5)beta(1) integrin from both wild-type CHO cells (CHO-K1) and deficient in proteoglycan biosynthesis (CHO-745) is post-translationally modified by glycosaminoglycan chains. We demonstrated this using [(35)S]sulfate metabolic labeling of the cells, enzymatic degradation, immunoprecipitation reaction with monoclonal antibody, fluorescence microscopy, and flow cytometry. The alpha(5)beta(1) integrin heterodimer is a hybrid proteoglycan containing both chondroitin and heparan sulfate chains. Xyloside inhibition of sulfate incorporation into alpha(5)beta(1) integrin also supports that integrin is a proteoglycan. Also. cells grown with xyloside adhered on fibronectin with no alteration in alpha(5)beta(1) integrin expression. However, haptotactic motility on fibronectin declined in cells grown with xyloside or chlorate as compared with controls. Thus, alpha(5)beta(1) integrin is a proteoglycan and the glycosaminoglycan chains of the integrin influence cell motility on fibronectin. Similar glycosylation of alpha(5)beta(1) integrin was observed in other normal and malignant cells, suggesting that this modification is conserved and important in the function of this integrin. Therefore, these glycosaminoglycan chains of alpha(5)beta(1) integrin are involved in cellular migration on fibronectin.

Background: A follow-up study was undertaken of all Western Australian women who had a new diagnosis of boast cancer during 1989. The aims were to determine survival, frequency of recurrence and quality of life (QoL) of Western Australian women 5 years after a diagnosis of breast cancer; to determine reasons for choice ol rejection of reconstructive surgery in those women treated by mastectomy, and to determine if the choice of lumpectomy or mastectomy affects subsequent QoL. Methods: The vital status as at Ist June 1994 of all 692 women who had a new diagnosis of breast cancer in 1989 was ascertained by electronic linkage to official mortality registrations. A subsample of 215 survivors who had originally been treated by the nine surgeons who had managed 20 or more cases each was sent a reply-paid postal questionnaire asking about follow-up treatment since diagnosis, recurrence of disease, current QoL and attitudes to, and use of, reconstructive surgery. Results: The overall survival rate at 5 years was 80.8% (85.9% and 78.8% for Stage I and II, respectively). Cumulative mortality was 35% lower among the third of patients treated by the nine most active surgeons (14% vs 22%, P < 0.02), but this may be subject to referral bias. The subsample was representative of all surviving cases except for being an average of 2.7 years younger at diagnosis (mean ages 55.2 and 57.9 years). The response rate of the subsample to the postal questionnaire was 78%. Of women who had had a mastectomy. 40% had considered having a reconstruction, but only nine (78%) had undergone this operation. Median QoL on the Rosser scale (maximum = 1.0) was 0.9. QoL was worse for the 23% of patients with a recurrence of breast cancer. Patients treated by breast-conserving surgery showed a trend toward a better QoL compared with those treated by mastectomy. Conclusion: At 5 years after the diagnosis of breast cancer, one in five women had died and an estimated one in four of the survivors had recurrent disease. Quality of life in the remaining patients, half of whom had undergone adjuvant treatment, was very good. These are important baseline data against which to judge the impact of mammographic screening.
