Shipboard studies during Ocean Drilling Program Leg 187 (Australian Antarctic Discordance, AAD) suggested that there was no discernible coincidence between the interpreted age of rocks recovered and the intensity of alteration observed. Samples from the oldest sites occupied appeared to exhibit the least overall effects of alteration, and the intensity of alteration varied from site to site. Previous investigations of low-temperature alteration in oceanic basement samples have been restricted by the myopic perspective provided by single drill holes or dredge collections. Combining core samples from Leg 187 and dredge samples from the AAD collection at Oregon State University (USA) offers the unique opportunity to investigate mineral and bulk chemical changes attending alteration of basalt over a range of ages from 0 to 28 Ma. Results of this research indicate that there is a general increase in the intensity of alteration as the basalts age and mosve off axis, but that this relationship is somewhat veiled by the dominating control on alteration intensity dictated by variations in permeability.

Approaches to quantify the organic carbon accumulation on a global scale generally do not consider the small-scale variability of sedimentary and oceanographic boundary conditions along continental margins. In this study, we present a new approach to regionalize the total organic carbon (TOC) content in surface sediments (<5 cm sediment depth). It is based on a compilation of more than 5500 single measurements from various sources. Global TOC distribution was determined by the application of a combined qualitative and quantitative-geostatistical method. Overall, 33 benthic TOC-based provinces were defined and used to process the global distribution pattern of the TOC content in surface sediments in a 1°x1° grid resolution. Regional dependencies of data points within each single province are expressed by modeled semi-variograms. Measured and estimated TOC values show good correlation, emphasizing the reasonable applicability of the method. The accumulation of organic carbon in marine surface sediments is a key parameter in the control of mineralization processes and the material exchange between the sediment and the ocean water. Our approach will help to improve global budgets of nutrient and carbon cycles.

Tämän tutkielman aiheena on vuoden 1994 Kalifornian lakialoitteen 187 representaatio The New York Timesissa julkaistuissa teksteissä. Tutkimusmetodina on käytetty diskurssianalyysia. Tutkimus on keskittyy syyskuusta 1994 tammikuuhun 1995 julkaistuihin teksteihin. Tutkimuksessa selvitettiin esitettiinkö lakialoite 187 The New York Timesissa myönteisessä vai kielteisessä valossa, millaisina ilmiöinä siirtolaisuus ja dokumentoimaton maahanmuutto on kuvattu lehdessä sekä miten julkaisussa on uutisoitu lakialoitteen vaikutuksista osa- ja liittovaltiotasolla. The New York Timesin toimittajat sitoivat lakialoitteen 187 käsittelyn osaksi laajempaa poliittista kokonaisuutta, johon kuuluivat samaan aikaan käydyt henkilövaalit. He seurasivat myös lakialoitteen konfliktia liittovaltiotason lainsäädännön kanssa sekä lakialoitteen jäädyttämiseen liittyneitä oikeuskäsittelyitä. Tutkimuksen perusteella The New York Timesin julkaisemien tekstien perusteella Kalifornian lakialoite 187 ei ollut kannatettava hanke. Siirtolaisuus kuvattiin mahdollisena yhteisöllisenä voimavarana ja siirtolaiset potentiaalisina amerikkalaisina. Lain ulkopuolisiin siirtolaisuuden ilmiöihin suhtauduttiin kielteisesti.

In this paper we propose a method for vision only topological simultaneous localisation and mapping (SLAM). Our approach does not use motion or odometric information but a sequence of colour histograms from visited places. In particular, we address the perceptual aliasing problem which occurs using external observations only in topological navigation. We propose a Bayesian inference method to incrementally build a topological map by inferring spatial relations from the sequence of observations while simultaneously estimating the robot's location. The algorithm aims to build a small map which is consistent with local adjacency information extracted from the sequence measurements. Local adjacency information is incorporated to disambiguate places which otherwise would appear to be the same. Experiments in an indoor environment show that the proposed technique is capable of dealing with perceptual aliasing using visual observations only and successfully performs topological SLAM.

This review article uses the work of Italian scholar Milly Buonanno to review the state and future of television scholarship, given that the ‘age of television’ has been overtaken by the age of computer-based media. In particular, it discusses the role of open-ended narrative through which we collectively explore the human condition.
