The lattice parameters extracted from Lebail analysis of neutron powder diffraction data collected between 2 and 300 K have been used to calculate the temperature evolution of the thermal expansion tensor for hopeite, Zn-3(PO4)(2)center dot 2H(2)O, Pnma,Z=4with a= 10.6065(4) angstrom, b = 18.2977(4) angstrom, c= 5.0257(2) A at 275 K. The a lattice parameter shows a negative thermal expansion, the b lattice parameter appears to saturate at 275 K while the c lattice parameter has a more typical positive thermal expansion. At 275 K, the magnitudes of the thermal expansion coefficients are alpha(a) = -1. 1(4) x 10(-5) K-1, alpha(b) = 2.4(9) x 10(-6) K-1 and alpha(c) = 3.6(2) x 10(-1) K-1. Under the conditions of these experiments, hopeite begins to dehydrate to the dihydrate between 300 and 325 K, and between 480 and 500 K the monohydrate is formed. The thermal expansion of the dihydrate has been calculated between 335 and 480 and at 480 K the magnitudes of the thermal expansion coefficients are alpha(a) = 1(2) x 10(-5) K-1, alpha(b) = 4(l) x 10(-6) K-1, alpha(c) = 4(2) x 10(-5) K-1, alpha(beta) = 1 (1) x 10(-1) K-1, and alpha(v) = 2(2) x 10(-1) K-1. The thermal expansion of hopeite is described in terms of its crystal structure and possible dehydration mechanisms for the alpha and beta modifications of hopeite are discussed.

The tridentate Schiff base ligand, 7-amino-4-methyl-5-aza-3-hepten-2-one (HAMAH), prepared by the mono-condensation of 1,2diaminoethane and acetylacetone, reacts with Cu(BF4)(2) center dot 6H(2)O to produce initially a dinuclear Cu(II) complex, [{Cu(AMAH)}(2) (mu-4,4'-bipyJ](BF4)(2) (1) which undergoes hydrolysis in the reaction mixture and finally produces a linear polymeric chain compound, [Cu(acac)(2)(mu-4,4'-bipy)](n) (2). The geometry around the copper atom in compound 1 is distorted square planar while that in compound 2 is essentially an elongated octahedron. On the other hand, the ligand HAMAH reacts with Cu(ClO4)(2) center dot 6H(2)O to yield a polymeric zigzag chain, [{Cu(acac)(CH3OH)(mu-4,4'-bipy)}(ClO4)](n) (3). The geometry of the copper atom in 3 is square pyramidal with the two bipyridine molecules in the cis equatorial positions. All three complexes have been characterized by elemental analysis, IR and UV-Vis spectroscopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. A probable explanation for the different size and shape of the reported polynuclear complexes formed by copper(II) and 4,4'-bipyridine has been put forward by taking into account the denticity and crystal field strength of the blocking ligand as well as the Jahn-Teller effect in copper(II). The title compound, [Cu(C4H8N3O2)(2)]center dot 2C(5)H(9)NO, consists of a neutral copper complex, in which the Cu II centre coordinates to two bis(methoxycarbimido) aminate ligands, solvated by two molecules of 1-methylpyrrolidin-2-one. The complex is planar and centrosymmetric, with the Cu II centre occupying a crystallographic inversion centre and adopting approximately square-planar geometry. N-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen-bonding interactions exist between the amine NH groups of the ligands and the O atoms of the 1-methylpyrrolidin-2-one molecules. The associated units pack to form sheets.

A new layered ammonium manganese(II) diphosphate, (NH4)(2)[Mn-3(P2O7)(2)(H2O)(2)], has been synthesised under solvothermal conditions at 433 K in ethylene glycol and the structure determined at 293 K using single-crystal X-ray diffraction data (M-r = 584.82, monoclinic, space group P2(1)/a, a = 9.4610( 8), b = 8.3565( 7), c = 9.477(1) Angstrom, beta = 99.908(9) degrees, V = 738.07 Angstrom(3), Z = 2, R = 0.0351 and R-w = 0.0411 for 1262 observed data (I > 3(sigma(I))). The structure consists of chains of cis- and trans-edge sharing MnO6 octahedra linked via P2O7 units to form layers of formula [Mn3P4O14(H2O)(2)](2-) in the ab plane. Ammonium ions lie between the manganese-diphosphate layers. A network of interlayer and ammonium-layer based hydrogen bonding holds the structure together. Magnetic measurements indicate Curie - Weiss behaviour above 30 K with mu(eff) = 5.74(1) mu(B) and theta = -23(1) K, consistent with the presence of high-spin Mn2+ ions and antiferromagnetic interactions. However, the magnetic data reveal a spontaneous magnetisation at 5 K, indicating a canting of Mn2+ moments in the antiferromagnetic ground state. On heating (NH4)(2)[Mn-3(P2O7)(2)(H2O)(2)] in water at 433 K under hydrothermal conditions, Mn-5(HPO4)(2)(PO4)(2).4H(2)O, synthetic hureaulite, is formed.

New hydrophobic, tetradentate nitrogen heterocyclic reagents, 6.6'-bis-(5,6-dialkyl- 1,2,4-triazin-3-yl)2,2'-bipyridines (BTBPs) have been synthesised. These reagents form complexes with lanthanides and crystal structures with 11 different lanthanides have been determined. The majority of the structures show the lanthanide to be 10-coordinate with stoichiometry [Ln(BTBP)(NO3)(3)] although Yb and Lu are 9-coordinate in complexes with stoichiometry [Ln(BTBP)(NO3)(2)(H2O)](NO3). In these complexes the BTBP ligands are tetradentate and planar with donor nitrogens mutually cis i.e. in the cis, cis, cis conformation. Crystal structures of two free molecules, namely C2-BTBP and CyMe4-BTBP have also been determined and show different conformations described as cis, trans, cis and trans, trans, trans respectively. A NMR titration between lanthanum nitrate and C5-BTBP showed that two different complexes are to be found in solution, namely [La(C5-BTBP)(2)](3+) and [La(C5-BTBP)(NO3)(3)]. The BTBPs dissolved in octanol were able to extract Am(III) and Eu(III) from 1 M nitric acid with large separation factors.

The tetradentate ligand (C-5-BTBP) was able to extract americium(III) selectively from nitric acid. In octanol/kerosene the distribution ratios suggest that stripping will be possible. C-5-BTBP has unusual properties and potentially offers a means of separating metals, which otherwise are difficult to separate. For example C-5-BTBP has the potential to separate paliadium(II) from a mixture containing rhodium(III) and ruthenium(H) nitrosyl. In addition, C-5-BTBP has the potential to remove traces of cadmium from effluent or from solutions of other metals contaminated with cadmium. C-5-BTBP has potential as a reagent for the separation of americium(III) from solutions contaminated with iron(III) and nickel(II), hence offering a means of concentrating americium(III) for analytical purposes from nitric acid solutions containing high concentrations of iron(III) or nickel(II).

The extraction of americium(III), curium(III), and the lanthanides(III) from nitric acid by 6,6'- bis (5,5,8,8-tetramethyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-benzo[1,2,4]triazin-3-yl)-[2,2'] bipyridine (CyMe4-BTBP) has been studied. Since the extraction kinetics were slow, N,N'-dimethyl-N,N'-dioctyl-2-(2-hexyloxy-ethyl)malonamide (DMDOHEMA) was added as a phase transfer reagent. With a mixture of 0.01 M CyMe4-BTBP + 0.25 M DMDOHEMA in n -octanol, extraction equilibrium was reached within 5 min of mixing. At a nitric acid concentration of 1 M, an americium(III) distribution ratio of approx. 10 was achieved. Americium(III)/lanthanide(III) separation factors between 50 (dysprosium) and 1500 (lanthanum) were obtained. Whereas americium(III) and curium(III) were extracted as disolvates, the stoichiometries of the lanthanide(III) complexes were not identified unambiguously, owing to the presence of DMDOHEMA. In the absence of DMDOHEMA, both americium(III) and europium(III) were extracted as disolvates. Back-extraction with 0.1 M nitric acid was thermodynamically possible but rather slow. Using a buffered glycolate solution of pH=4, an americium(III) distribution ratio of 0.01 was obtained within 5 min of mixing. There was no evidence of degradation of the extractant, for example, the extraction performance of CyMe4-BTBP during hydrolylsis with 1 M nitric acid did not change over a two month contact.

The bifunctional carbamoyl methyl sulfoxide ligands, PhCH2SOCH2CONHPh (L-1), PhCH2SOCH2CONHCH2Ph (L-2), (PhSOCH2CONPr2)-Pr-i (L-3), PhSOCH2CONBu2 (L-4), (PhSOCH2CONBu2)-Bu-i (L-5) and PhSOCH2CON(C8H17)(2) (L-6) have been synthesized and characterized by spectroscopic methods. The selected coordination chemistry of L-1, L-3, L-4 and L-5 with [UO2(NO3)(2)] and [Ce(NO3)(3)] has been evaluated. The structures of the compounds [UO2(NO3)(2)((PhSOCH2CONBu2)-Bu-i)] (10) and [Ce(NO3)(3)(PhSOCH2CONBu2)(2)] (12) have been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction methods. Preliminary extraction studies of ligand L-6 with U(VI), Pu(IV) and Am(III) in tracer level showed an appreciable extraction for U(VI) and Pu(IV) in up to 10 M HNO3 but not for Am(III). Thermal studies on compounds 8 and 10 in air revealed that the ligands can be destroyed completely on incineration. The electron spray mass spectra of compounds 8 and 10 in acetone show that extensive ligand distribution reactions occur in solution to give a mixture of products with ligand to metal ratios of 1 : 1 and 2 : 1. However, 10 retains its solid state structure in CH2Cl2.

Four trinuclear Cu(II) complexes, [(CuL1)(3)(mu(3)-OH)](NO3)(2) (1), [(CuL2)(3)(mu(3)-OH)](I)(2)center dot H2O (2), [(CuL3)(3)(mu(3)-OH)](I)(2) (3) and [(CuL1)(3)(mu(3)-OH)][(CuI3)-I-1] (4), where HL1 (8-amino-4-methyl-5-azaoct-3-en-2-one), HL2 [7-amino-4-methyl-5-azaoct-3-en-2-one] and HL3 [7-amino-4-methyl-5-azahept-3-en-2- one] are the three tridentate Schiff bases, have been synthesized and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. All four complexes contain a partial cubane core, [(CuL)(3)(mu(3)-OH)](2+) in which the three [CuL] subunits are interconnected through two types of oxygen bridges afforded by the oxygen atoms of the ligands and the central OH- group. The copper(II) ions are in a distorted square-pyramidal environment. The equatorial plane consists of the bridging oxygen of the central OH- group together with three atoms (N, N, O) from the Schiff base. The oxygen atom of the Schiff base also coordinates to the axial position of Cu(II) of another subunit to form the cyclic trimer. Magnetic susceptibilities have been determined for these complexes over the temperature range of 2-300 K. The isotropic Hamiltonian, H = -J(12)S(1)S(2) - J(13)S(1)S(3) - J(23)S(2)S(3) has been used to interpret the magnetic data. The best fit parameters obtained are: J = - 54.98 cm(-1) g = 2.24 for 1; J = - 56.66 cm(-1), g = 2.19 for 2; J = -44.39 cm(-1), g = 2.16 for 3; J = - 89.92 cm(-1), g = 2.25 for 4. The EPR data at low temperature indicate that the phenomenon of spin frustration occurs for complexes 1-3. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Three new mononuclear complexes of nitrogen-sulfur donor sets, formulated as (Fe-II(L)Cl-2] (1), [Co-II(L)Cl-2] (2) and [Ni-II(L)Cl-2] (3) where L = 1,3-bis(2-pyridylmethylthio)propane, were synthesized and isolated in their pure form. All the complexes were characterized by physicochemical and spectroscopic methods. The solid state structures of complexes I and 3 have been established by single crystal X-ray crystallography. The structural analysis evidences isomorphous crystals with the metal ion in a distorted octahedral geometry that comprises NSSN ligand donors with trans located pyridine rings and chlorides in cis positions. In dimethylformamide solution, the complexes were found to exhibit Fe-II/Fe-III, co(II)/co(III) and Ni-II/Ni-III quasi-reversible redox couples in cyclic voltammograms with E-1/2 values (versus Ag/AgCl at 298 K) of +0.295, +0.795 and +0.745 V for 1, 2 and 3, respectively. Four new trinuclear copper(II) complexes, [(CuL1)(3)(mu(3)-OH)](ClO4)(2)center dot H2O (1), [(CuL2)(3)(mu(3)-OH)](CIO4)(2) (2), [(CuL3)(3)-(mu(3)-OH)](ClO4)(4)center dot H2O (3), and [(CuL4)(3)(mu(3)-OH)](ClO4)(2)center dot H2O (4), where HL1 = 8-amino-4,7,7-trimethyl-5-azaoct-3-en-2-one, HL2 = 7-amino-4-methyl-5-azaoct-3-en-2-one, HL3 = 7(ethylamino)-4-methyl-5-azahept-3-en-2-one, and HL4 = 4-methyl-7-(methylamino)-5-azahept-3-en-2-one, have been derived from the four tridentate Schiff bases (HL1, HL2, HL3, and HL4) and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. For all compounds, the cationic part is trinuclear with a CU3OH core held by three carbonyl oxygen bridges between each pair of copper(II) atoms. The copper atoms are five-coordinate with a distorted square-pyramidal geometry; the equatorial plane consists of the bridging oxygen atom of the central OH group together with three atoms (N, N, O) from one ligand whereas an oxygen atom of a second ligand occupies the axial position. Magnetic measurements have been performed in the 2-300 K temperature range. The experimental data could be satisfactorily reproduced by using an isotropic exchange model, H = -J(S1S2+S2S3+S1S3) yielding as best-fit parameters: J = -66.7 and g = 2.19 for 1, J = -36.6 and g = 2.20 for 2, J = -24.5 and g = 2.20 for 3, and J = -14.9 and g = 2.05 for 4. EPR spectra at low temperature show the existence of spin frustration in complexes 3 and 4, but it has not been possible to carry out calculations of the antisymmetric exchange parameter, G, from magnetic data. In frozen methanolic solution, at 4 K, hyperfine splitting in all complexes and spin frustration in complex 4 seem to be confirmed. ((c) Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The synthesis, characterisation, X-ray single crystal structures and magnetic properties of three new basal-apical mu(2)-1,1-azide-bridged complexes [(CuLN3)-N-1](2) (1), [(CuLN3)-N-2](2) (2) and [(CuLN3)-N-3](2) (3) with very similar tridentate Schiff-base blocking ligands {HL1 = N-[2-(ethylamino) ethyl] salicylaldimine; HL2 = 7-(ethylamino)-4-methyl-5-azahept-3-en-2-one; HL3 = 7-amino-4-methyl-5-azaoct-3-en-2-one} have been reported [complex 1: monoclinic, P2(1)/c, a = 8.390(2), b = 7.512(2), c = 19.822(6) Angstrom, beta = 91.45(5)degrees; complex 2: monoclinic, P2(1)/c, a = 8.070(9), b = 9.787(12), c = 15.743(17) A, beta = 98.467(10)degrees; complex 3: monoclinic, P2(1)/n, a = 5.884(7), b = 16.147(18), c = 11.901(12) Angstrom, beta = 90.050(10)degrees]. The structures consist of neutral dinuclear entities resulting from the pairing of two mononuclear units through end-on azide bridges connecting an equatorial position of one copper centre to an axial position of the other, The copper ions adopt a (4+1) square-based geometry in all the complexes. In complex 2, there is no inter-dimer hydrogen-bonding. However, complexes 1 and 3 form two different supramolecular structures in which the dinuclear entities are linked by H-bonds giving one-dimensional systems. Variable temperature (300-2 K) magnetic-susceptibility measurements and magnetisation measurements at 2 K reveal that all three complexes have antiferromagnetic coupling. Magneto-structural correlations have been made taking into consideration both the azido bridging ligands and the existence of intermolecular hydrogen bonds. ((C) Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The new ligand 6,6 ''-bis(5,5,8,8-tetramethyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-1,2,4-benzotriazin-3-yl)2,2':6 ',2 ''-terpyridine (CyMe4-BTTP) has been synthesized in 4 steps from 2,2':6',2 ''-terpyridine. Detailed NMR and mass spectrometry studies indicate that the ligand forms 1 : 2 complexes with lanthanide(III) perchlorates where the aliphatic rings are conformationally constrained whereas 1 : 1 complexes are formed with lanthanide(III) nitrates where the rings are conformationally mobile. An optimized structure of the 1 : 2 solution complex with Yb(III) was obtained from the relative magnitude of the induced paramagnetic shifts. X-Ray crystallographic structures of the ligand and of its 1 : 1 complex with Y(III) were also obtained. The NMR and mass spectra of [Pd(CyMe4-BTTP)](n)(2n+) are consistent with a dinuclear double helical structure (n = 2). In the absence of a phase-modifier, CyMe4-BTTP in n-octanol showed a maximum distribution coefficient of Am(III) of 0.039 (+/-20%) and a maximum separation factor of Am(III) over Eu(III) of 12.0 from nitric acid. The metal(III) cations are extracted as the 1 : 1 complex from nitric acid. The generally low distribution coefficients observed compared with the BTBPs arise because the 1 : 1 complex of CyMe4-BTTP is considerably less hydrophobic than the 1 : 2 complexes formed by the BTBPs. In M(BTTP)(3+) complexes, there is a competition between the nitrate ions and the ligand for the complexation of the metal.
