Open Education Resources are educational materials purposely made available for free use by others. They offer tremendous potential for reducing costs and increasing access to education especially in the developing world. This paper discusses issues of quality, localization, adaptation and integration that need to be addressed in order to make OER adoption a successful strategy.

This paper will discuss the possible roles of academic libraries in promoting, supporting, and sustaining institutional Open Educational Resource initiatives. It will note areas in which libraries or librarians have skills and knowledge that intersect with some of the needs of academic staff and students as they use and release OERs. It will also present the results of a brief survey of the views of some OER initiatives on the current and potential role of academic libraries.

The introduction of open educational resources (OER) in two Ghanaian universities through a grant-funded project was embraced with a lot of enthusiasm. The project started on a high note and the Colleges of Health Sciences in the two universities produced a significant number of e-learning materials as health OER in the first year. Growing challenges such as faculty time commitments, technological and infrastructural constraints, shortage of technical expertise, lack of awareness beyond the early adopters and non-existent system for OER dissemination and use set in. These exposed the fact that institutional policy and integration was essential to ensure effective implementation and sustainability of OER efforts. Informed by the early OER experiences at the two institutions, this paper proposes that institutions in low resource settings perhaps need to pay close attention to awareness creation, initiative structuring, funding, capacity building, systemization for scalability and motivation if OER sustainability is to be achieved.

Les autores i autors d'aquest llibre ofereixen una descripció de l'evolució general de l'e-learning apuntant els elements clau cap als que ha d'anar evolucionant. Parteixen de l'experiència i la pràctica contrastada amb les investigacions sobre el tema. Al llarg dels diferents capítols ens mostren com viu un estudiant virtual, el seu paper i la manera com planteja i organitza les seves activitats; ens acosten al professorat analitzant el seu rol en el disseny de la formació i la comunicació amb els estudiants; parlen de la col·laboració, analitzant com dissenyar activitats col·laboratives i assenyalant els seus avantatges i límits; descriuen els diferents recursos d'aprenentatge que podem disposar en el disseny dels cursos i, finalment, acompanyen la nostra mirada cap al futur pròxim analitzant les tendències i els reptes als que hem de fer front per construir l'e-learning del segle XXI.

Background: Sulfate and phosphate are both vital macronutrients required for plant growth and development. Despite evidence for interaction between sulfate and phosphate homeostasis, no transcriptional factor has yet been identified in higher plants that affects, at the gene expression and physiological levels, the response to both elements. This work was aimed at examining whether PHR1, a transcription factor previously shown to participate in the regulation of genes involved in phosphate homeostasis, also contributed to the regulation and activity of genes involved in sulfate inter-organ transport. Results: Among the genes implicated in sulfate transport in Arabidopsis thaliana, SULTR1;3 and SULTR3;4 showed up-regulation of transcripts in plants grown under phosphate-deficient conditions. The promoter of SULTR1;3 contains a motif that is potentially recognizable by PHR1. Using the phr1 mutant, we showed that SULTR1;3 up regulation following phosphate deficiency was dependent on PHR1. Furthermore, transcript up regulation was found in phosphate-deficient shoots of the phr1 mutant for SULTR2;1 and SULTR3;4, indicating that PHR1 played both a positive and negative role on the expression of genes encoding sulfate transporters. Importantly, both phr1 and sultr1;3 mutants displayed a reduction in their sulfate shoot-to-root transfer capacity compared to wild-type plants under phosphate-deficient conditions. Conclusions: This study reveals that PHR1 plays an important role in sulfate inter-organ transport, in particular on the regulation of the SULTR1;3 gene and its impact on shoot-to-root sulfate transport in phosphate-deficient plants. PHR1 thus contributes to the homeostasis of both sulfate and phosphate in plants under phosphate deficiency. Such a function is also conserved in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii via the PHR1 ortholog PSR1.

Diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging, which measures directional information of water diffusion in the brain, has emerged as a powerful tool for human brain studies. In this paper, we introduce a new Monte Carlo-based fiber tracking approach to estimate brain connectivity. One of the main characteristics of this approach is that all parameters of the algorithm are automatically determined at each point using the entropy of the eigenvalues of the diffusion tensor. A Web-based tool developed to automatically correct relational database schemas is presented. This tool has been integrated into a more general e-learning platform and is used to reinforce teaching and learning on database courses. This platform assigns to each student a set of database problems selected from a common repository. The student has to design a relational database schema and enter it into the system through a user friendly interface specifically designed for it. The correction tool corrects the design and shows detected errors. The student has the chance to correct them and send a new solution. These steps can be repeated as many times as required until a correct solution is obtained. Currently, this system is being used in different introductory database courses at the University of Girona with very promising results

Nucleic acid amplification techniques are commonly used currently to diagnose viral diseases and manage patients with this kind of illnesses. These techniques have had a rapid but unconventional route of development during the last 30 years, with the discovery and introduction of several assays in clinical diagnosis. The increase in the number of commercially available methods has facilitated the use of this technology in the majority of laboratories worldwide. This technology has reduced the use of some other techniques such as viral culture based methods and serological assays in the clinical virology laboratory. Moreover, nucleic acid amplification techniques are now the methods of reference and also the most useful assays for the diagnosis in several diseases. The introduction of these techniques and their automation provides new opportunities for the clinical laboratory to affect patient care. The main objectives in performing nucleic acid tests in this field are to provide timely results useful for high-quality patient care at a reasonable cost, because rapid results are associated with improvements in patients care. The use of amplification techniques such as polymerase chain reaction, real-time polymerase chain reaction or nucleic acid sequence-based amplification for virus detection, genotyping and quantification have some advantages like high sensitivity and reproducibility, as well as a broad dynamic range. This review is an up-to-date of the main nucleic acid techniques and their clinical applications, and special challenges and opportunities that these techniques currently provide for the clinical virology laboratory.

Peroxisome proliferators regulate the transcription of genes by activating ligand-dependent transcription factors, which, due to their structure and function, can be assigned to the superfamily of nuclear hormone receptors. Three such peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPAR alpha, beta, and gamma) have been cloned in Xenopus laevis. Their mRNAs are expressed differentially; xPPAR alpha and beta but not xPPAR gamma are expressed in oocytes and embryos. In the adult, expression of xPPAR alpha and beta appears to be ubiquitous, and xPPAR gamma is mainly observed in adipose tissue and kidney. Immunocytochemical analysis revealed that PPARs are nuclear proteins, and that their cytoplasmic-nuclear translocation is independent of exogenous activators. A target gene of PPARs is the gene encoding acyl-CoA oxidase (ACO), which catalyzes the rate-limiting step in the peroxisomal beta-oxidation of fatty acids. A peroxisome proliferator response element (PPRE), to which PPARs bind, has been identified within the promoter of the ACO gene. Besides the known xenobiotic activators of PPARs, such as hypolipidemic drugs, natural activators have been identified. Polyunsaturated fatty acids at physiological concentrations are efficient activators of PPARs, and 5,8,11,14-eicosatetraynoic acid (ETYA), which is the alkyne homolog of arachidonic acid, is the most potent activator of xPPAR alpha described to date. Taken together, our data suggest that PPARs have an important role in lipid metabolism.

RESUMO Objetivo Realizar a adaptação transcultural e a validação da versão de 29-itens daReadiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale (RIPLS) para língua portuguesa falada no Brasil. Método Foram adotadas cinco etapas: três traduções, síntese, três retrotraduções, avaliação por especialistas e pré-teste. A validação contou com 327 estudantes de 13 cursos de graduação de uma universidade pública. Foram realizadas análises paralelas com o software R e a análise fatorial utilizando Modelagem de Equações Estruturais. Resultados A análise fatorial resultou em uma escala de 27 itens e três fatores: Fator 1 – Trabalho em equipe e colaboração com 14 itens (1-9, 12-16), Fator 2 – Identidade profissional, oito itens (10, 11, 17, 19, 21-24), e Fator 3 – Atenção à saúde centrada no paciente, cinco itens (25-29). Alfa de Cronbach dos três fatores foi respectivamente: 0,90; 0,66; 0,75. Análise de variância mostrou diferenças significativas nas médias dos fatores dos grupos profissionais. Conclusão Foram identificadas evidências de validação da versão em português da RIPLS em sua aplicação no contexto nacional.

Se describe lugares de anidación de las especies residentes más comunes del litoral peruano. Se amplía el conocimiento del área de distribución para las siguientes especies: Sula nebouxii, Phalacrocorax gaimardi, Ereunetes mauri, Erolia minutilla y Larus belcheri. Se contribuye con una especie nueva para la costa peruana, con Heteroscelus incanum, de la familia Scolopacidae, que sólo era conocida hasta Ecuador, en el Perú, fue registrada y cazada en Punta Salinas (Cocoi), 11°13 'Lat.S. Se da el primer récord de reproducción de Charadrius wilsonia beldingi en la costa central del Perú.

En tres transectos perpendiculares a la costa oriental de la Isla Independencia, se colectaron un total de 25 rizoides de Lessonia sp. Entre 3 y 10 m. de profundidad, en agosto, noviembre y diciembre de 1986. Se determinaron un total de 143 taxa de invertebrados.

Presenta los resultados de la prospección ejecutada en los ríos Ocoña, Majes - Camaná y Tambo (Departamento de Arequipa), entre el 31 de mayo y el 20 de junio de 1996, con el objetivo de evaluar el estado actual de las poblaciones de camarón de río, Cryphiops caementarius. A su vez, se analizó los principales factores abióticos de la calidad del agua, a fin de establecer su influencia en la distribución y abundancia del recurso.

Presenta los resultados de la evaluación del recurso macha y presenta información referente a estructura por tamaños, distribución espacial, relaciones biométricas, distribución espacial por metro cuadrado, biomasa del recurso en la playa Caballas, departamento de Ica; con la finalidad de determinar la población de los principales bancos naturales del recurso macha en playas aledañas al puerto de Lomas.
