Child overweight and obesity reaches across ethnic, cultural, socioeconomic and regional barriers. It must be assessed, diagnosed and treated to help families make sustainable behavior changes. Treatment recommendations have been made to address pediatric overweight and obesity. They include screening for risk factors, monitoring BMI trends and educating patients and families to make small sustainable changes. Health insurance companies can play a meaningful role in supporting and facilitating provider education and behavior change to diagnose, treat and prevent pediatric overweight and obesity.^ The aims of this thesis were: (1) Describe a disease management program that uses evidence-based practices to create provider behavior change related to pediatric obesity screening, diagnosis and treatment. (2) Identify ways to improve the implementation of the program based on the perceptions of participating clinicians.^ A literature review was completed to evaluate current recommendations for screening and treating pediatric obesity using the Ovid data base. The evidenced-based recommendations were compared against the practices of the Healthy Lifestyles Program (HeLP). The literature confirmed that HeLP is following evidence-based recommendations for assessment, diagnosis and treatment of pediatric obesity.^ A Children’s Mercy Family Health Partners focus group was convened to create a provider survey. The goals of the survey were to assess providers’ perception of the Healthy Lifestyles Program (HeLP). The survey was sent out through email using Survey Monkey. All survey responses were anonymous. The survey was sent to a total of 80 providers who had completed HeLP. Twenty-five percent responded. The survey results were evaluated to make recommendations for HeLP.^ Results of the survey included motivating factors for participation in HeLP. Concern about the increasing prevalence of pediatric obesity was a frequent motivator for participation. Provider barriers to obesity diagnosis were evaluated. Lack of time during clinic visits a frequent barrier to obesity diagnosis. ^ In conclusion several recommendations for the HeLP were made based on survey results. It is recommended that the program evaluate methods and tools for facilitating effective weight management follow up visits. Promotional materials should highlight the increasing prevalence of pediatric obesity when advertising HeLP. These recommendations will be used to refine the current Healthy Lifestyles Program.^

Ocean Drilling Program inorganic geochemistry procedures routinely overlook more than 99% of the sediment column. Present and past biogeochemical reactions alter the sediment record; however, most of these reaction zones are bypassed by the normal methods where samples are collected every 30 m. A new approach to increase resolution was introduced during Leg 119. Ten milliliters of sediment provided interstitial-water samples for ammonia, silica, sulfate, magnesium, and calcium analyses. The new method introduced some systematic differences in concentrations, as well as some decrease in precision. A number of advantages, however, may warrant using the method in some instances. In cases where routine interstitial-water data showed anomalous results, core sections were retrieved from the storage facility and resampled. The new high-resolution procedure was used to provide water samples in cases were water contents were low and routine squeezing could not recover pore water.

A numerical model of sulfate reduction and isotopic fractionation has been applied to pore fluid SO4**2- and d34S data from four sites drilled during Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 168 in the Cascadia Basin at 48°N, where basement temperatures reach up to 62°C. There is a source of sulfate both at the top and the bottom of the sediment column due to the presence of basement fluid flow, which promotes bacterial sulfate reduction below the sulfate minimum zone at elevated temperatures. Pore fluid d34S data show the highest values (135 per mil) yet found in the marine environment. The bacterial sulfur isotopic fractionation factor, a, is severely underestimated if the pore fluids of anoxic marine sediments are assumed to be closed systems and Rayleigh fractionation plots yield erroneous values for a by as much as 15 per mil in diffusive and advective pore fluid regimes. Model results are consistent with a = 1.077+/-0.007 with no temperature effect over the range 1.8 to 62°C and no effect of sulfate reduction rate over the range 2 to 10 pmol/ccm/day. The reason for this large isotopic fractionation is unknown, but one difference with previous studies is the very low sulfate reduction rates recorded, about two orders of magnitude lower than literature values that are in the range of µmol/ccm/day to tens of nmol/ccm/day. In general, the greatest 34S depletions are associated with the lowest sulfate reduction rates and vice versa, and it is possible that such extreme fractionation is a characteristic of open systems with low sulfate reduction rates.

Compile-time program analysis techniques can be applied to Web service orchestrations to prove or check various properties. In particular, service orchestrations can be subjected to resource analysis, in which safe approximations of upper and lower resource usage bounds are deduced. A uniform analysis can be simultaneously performed for different generalized resources that can be directiy correlated with cost- and performance-related quality attributes, such as invocations of partners, network traffic, number of activities, iterations, and data accesses. The resulting safe upper and lower bounds do not depend on probabilistic assumptions, and are expressed as functions of size or length of data components from an initiating message, using a finegrained structured data model that corresponds to the XML-style of information structuring. The analysis is performed by transforming a BPEL-like representation of an orchestration into an equivalent program in another programming language for which the appropriate analysis tools already exist.

The petroleum pipeline industry in the United States is challenged with maintaining the integrity of their pipelines, while also protecting the environment during any pipeline repairs. This project provides information on the activities relating to the industry Integrity Management Program, assesses the process that federal agencies are developing to create streamlined permitting processes, and if the necessary federal, state, and local wetland permits can be obtained in the time frame required by the law. Recommendations are also made for implementation of a fast-track wetland permitting process and what pipeline companies can do to speed up the permitting process. This project focuses on the refined petroleum pipelines that originate near the Gulf of Mexico and terminate in the Northeastern United States.
