Many attempts have been made to overcome problems involved in character recognition which have resulted in the manufacture of character reading machines. An investigation into a new approach to character recognition is described. Features for recognition are Fourier coefficients. These are generated optically by convolving characters with periodic gratings. The development of hardware to enable automatic measurement of contrast and position of periodic shadows produced by the convolution is described. Fourier coefficients of character sets were measured, many of which are tabulated. Their analysis revealed that a few low frequency sampling points could be selected to recognise sets of numerals. Limited treatment is given to show the effect of type face variations on the values of coefficients which culminated in the location of six sampling frequencies used as features to recognise numerals in two type fonts. Finally, the construction of two character recognition machines is compared and contrasted. The first is a pilot plant based on a test bed optical Fourier analyser, while the second is a more streamlined machine d(3signed for high speed reading. Reasons to indicate that the latter machine would be the most suitable to adapt for industrial and commercial applications are discussed.

Luminance changes within a scene are ambiguous; they can indicate reflectance changes, shadows, or shading due to surface undulations. How does vision distinguish between these possibilities? When a surface painted with an albedo texture is shaded, the change in local mean luminance (LM) is accompanied by a similar modulation of the local luminance amplitude (AM) of the texture. This relationship does not necessarily hold for reflectance changes or for shading of a relief texture. Here we concentrate on the role of AM in shape-from-shading. Observers were presented with a noise texture onto which sinusoidal LM and AM signals were superimposed, and were asked to indicate which of two marked locations was closer to them. Shape-from-shading was enhanced when LM and AM co-varied (in-phase), and was disrupted when they were out-of-phase. The perceptual differences between cue types (in-phase vs out-of-phase) were enhanced when the two cues were present at different orientations within a single image. Similar results were found with a haptic matching task. We conclude that vision can use AM to disambiguate luminance changes. LM and AM have a positive relationship for rendered, undulating, albedo textures, and we assess the degree to which this relationship holds in natural images. From the research and awareness of literary work, this thesis discusses aspects related to the study of homoeroticism and lifestyles in the works Dancer from the Dance (2001) by Andrew Holleran and Pela noite (2010) by Brazilian author Caio Fernando Abreu. Whereas issues about beauty, desire and lifestyle shape cutouts important to the narrative, I propose a discussion by examining the works that mark from the first moments of sexual release party in New York with the peculiarities of their own styles that characterized the Andrew Holleran characters rostificadas by an ethos that he composed during this time opening for freedom of sexual deviant sexualities. In Pela noite, we reiterate a continuation of opening moment in Brazil for gay characters Caio , assuming the early 1980s for those characters is the first " shadows " of AIDS and knowledge of self , in which his characters living with fear, anonymity and reminiscences of homophobia as a backdrop to the discussions that are triggered off by the author . To compose a theoretical framework to subsidize this work , we selected the works of Michel Foucault (2007 , 2010a , 2010b ) , Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick (2008 ) , Didier Eribon (2008 ) , David Cartier (2004 ) , David Eisenbach (2006 ) and other contributions that were undoubtedly essential to this endeavor
