Between March 2000 and April 2001 two commercial fishing vessels fished for toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides) off South Georgia using pots. A significant number of lithodid crabs (three species of Paralomis spp.) were caught as bycatch. Paralomis spinosissima occurred in shallow water, generally shallower than 700 m. Paralomis anamerae, not previously reported from this area and therefore representing a considerable southerly extension in the reported geographic range of this species, had an intermediate depth distribution from 400 to 800 m. Paralomis formosa was present in shallow waters but reached much higher catch levels (and, presumably, densities) between 800 and 1400 m. Differences were also noted in depth distribution of the sexes and size of crabs. Depth, soak time, and area were found to significantly influence crab catch rates. Few crabs (3% of P. spinosissima and 7% of P. formosa) were males above the legal size limit and could therefore be retained. All other crabs were discarded. Most crabs (>99% of P. formosa, >97% of P. spinosissima, and >90% of P. anamerae) were lively on arrival on deck and at subsequent discard. Mortality rates estimated from re-immersion experiments indicated that on the vessel where pots were emptied directly onto the factory conveyor belt 78–89% of crabs would survive discarding, whereas on the vessel where crabs were emptied down a vertical chute prior to being sorted, survivorship was 38–58%. Of the three, P. anamerae was the most vulnerable to handling onboard and sub-sequent discarding. Paralomis spinosissima seemed more vulnerable than P. formosa.

The paper deals with an experiment with a floating trawl net off Cochin, using a pair of curved otter boards and a transducer mounted on the head rope of the net. 32 hauls were made with different towing speeds and warp length keeping one factor constant for varying parameters of the other factor. The working data for 32 hauls are presented and the effect in the fishing depth of the net due to the variation in one factor is mentioned. The 'fishing depth' is indicated in this paper as the distance between the head rope and the bottom. The usefulness of similar experiments with added information on the angle of leading warp at the stern for the exploitation of column fishes in Indian waters is indicated.

The simultaneous all optical 3R regeneration and format conversion in a simple, single integrated device was examined. The integrated device consisted of a semiconductor optical fiber (SOA) monolithically integrated with a distributed feedback (DFB) laser. Gain saturation was employed for the transmission of a data signal regenerated all-optically in the laser/amplifier device. The regeneration of the electrically filtered eye diagrams was observed by noise removal and extinction ratio-improvement by the device.

Mandrel peel tests with mandrels or rollers of varying diameters have been carried out using Mylar backing of several thicknesses and a commercial synthetic acrylic adhesive. The results are critically compared with the numerical predictions of the peeling software package ICPeel. In addition, a finite element model of the mandrel peeling process has been completed which gives good agreement with experiment provided appropriate mechanical properties of adherend and adhesive are used which must include the effects of adherent constraint. The influence of the thickness of the backing is also considered and both experiment and analysis confirm that there is a backing thickness at which the peel force for a laminate of this sort will show a maximum. © 2010 Blackwell Publishing Ltd.

Result of experimental lobster fishing with three new designs, namely rectangular, Australian pot and ink-well traps at Muttam, Kadiapatnam, Colachal, Enayam and Vizhinjam, south-west coast of India during 1979-80 are reported. Preliminary studies show that Australian pot and rectangular traps as more efficient to the ink-well type.

A brief account is given of experiments undertaken rearing Penaeus monodon larvae fed on diatom (Chaetoceros calcitran) and fermented vegetable trash, which included fruits and their peels, vegetables and rice. The possible use of high protein content trash materials as a feed substitute is examined briefly.

Established firms accumulate a significant body of knowledge, expertise and capabilities that are often secondary to their central revenue generating activities. How do they leverage this expertise in non-core technology into future value creation opportunities? In this paper we examine an attempt by the telecommunications firm BT to create value from the accumulated knowledge within its laboratories by setting up an incubator. While conceived by the board as a mechanism for leveraging the value of non-core technology into the workplace, corporate support for the incubator was withdrawn after only three years and prompted the incubator to partner with a venture capital firm, NVP, in the spin-out of ventures. Through analysis of this single case we observe how entering into such a relationship reduces the transaction costs of accessing complementary resources, capabilities and competences, while simultaneously reducing a number of the risks associated with venturing for both parties. Partnering with the venture capitalist allows the established firm to get its intellectual property into the market, for it to be tested by the market and further developed. © 2010 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

Models capturing the connectivity between different domains of a design, e.g. between components and functions, can provide a tool for tracing and analysing aspects of that design. In this paper, video experiments are used to explore the role of cross-domain modelling in building up information about a design. The experiments highlight that cross-domain modelling can be a useful tool to create and structure design information. Findings suggest that consideration of multiple domains encourages discussion during modelling, helps identify design aspects that might otherwise be overlooked, and can help promote consideration of alternative design options. The DDES method is employed to investigate the complex physics involved in supersonic combustion and in particular in the SCHOLAR scramjet test case. The influence on computational results of prescribing turbulent fluctuations at the entrance to the combustion chamber is investigated. The interaction of shock waves, vortices, turbulence and combustion is studied and the existence of secondary vortices on the upper will of the combustor is proposed. © 2012 by Peter Cocks.
