Traffic safety engineers are among the early adopters of Bayesian statistical tools for analyzing crash data. As in many other areas of application, empirical Bayes methods were their first choice, perhaps because they represent an intuitively appealing, yet relatively easy to implement alternative to purely classical approaches. With the enormous progress in numerical methods made in recent years and with the availability of free, easy to use software that permits implementing a fully Bayesian approach, however, there is now ample justification to progress towards fully Bayesian analyses of crash data. The fully Bayesian approach, in particular as implemented via multi-level hierarchical models, has many advantages over the empirical Bayes approach. In a full Bayesian analysis, prior information and all available data are seamlessly integrated into posterior distributions on which practitioners can base their inferences. All uncertainties are thus accounted for in the analyses and there is no need to pre-process data to obtain Safety Performance Functions and other such prior estimates of the effect of covariates on the outcome of interest. In this light, fully Bayesian methods may well be less costly to implement and may result in safety estimates with more realistic standard errors. In this manuscript, we present the full Bayesian approach to analyzing traffic safety data and focus on highlighting the differences between the empirical Bayes and the full Bayes approaches. We use an illustrative example to discuss a step-by-step Bayesian analysis of the data and to show some of the types of inferences that are possible within the full Bayesian framework.

The Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT), Nebraska Department of Roads (NDOR), and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) are proposing improvements to the interstate system in the Omaha/Council Bluffs metropolitan area, extending across the Missouri River on Interstate 80 (I-80) to east of the Interstate 480 (I-480) interchange in Omaha, Nebraska (see Figure 1-1). The study considers long-term, broad-base transportation improvements along Interstate I-29 (I-29), I-80, and I-480, including approximately 18 mainline miles of interstate and 14 interchanges (3 system1, 11 service), that would add capacity and correct functional issues along the mainline and interchanges and upgrade the I-80 Missouri River Crossing. These improvements, once implemented, would bring the segments of I-80 and I-29 up to current engineering standards and modernize the roadway to accommodate future traffic needs.

The need to construct bridges that last longer, are less expensive, and take less time to build has increased. The importance of accelerated bridge construction (ABC) technologies has been realized by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) Office of Bridges and Structures. This project is another in a series of ABC bridge projects undertaken by the Iowa DOT. Buena Vista County, Iowa, with the assistance of the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Bridge Engineering Center (BEC) at Iowa State University, constructed a two-lane single-span precast box girder bridge, using rapid construction techniques. The design involved the use of precast, pretensioned components for the bridge superstructure, substructure, and backwalls. This application and demonstration represents an important step in the development and advancement of these techniques in Iowa as well as nationwide. Prior funding for the design and construction of this bridge (including materials) was obtained through the FHWA Innovative Bridge Research and Deployment (IBRD) Program. The Iowa Highway Research Board (IHRB) provided additional funding to test and evaluate the bridge. This project directly addresses the IBRD goal of demonstrating (and documenting) the effectiveness of innovative materials and construction techniques for the construction of new bridge structures. Evaluation of performance was formulated through comparisons with design assumptions and recognized codes and standards including American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) specifications.

Recent construction of new generation power plants burning western coal within Iowa has resulted in fly Ash production on the order of 760,000 tons annually. Although fly ash has long been accepted as a valuable replacement for portland cement in concrete, most experience has been with fly ash generated from eastern bituminous coals. A few years ago, fly ash in Iowa was not a significant factor because production was small and economics dictated disposal as the better alternative than construction use. Today, the economic climate, coupled with abundance of the material, makes constructive use in concrete feasible. The problem is, however, fly ash produced from new power plants is different than that for which information was available. It seems fly ash types have outgrown existing standards. The objective of this study was to develop fundamental information about fly ashes available to construction in Iowa such that its advantages and limitations as replacement to portland cement can be defined. Evaluative techniques used in this work involve sophisticated laboratory equipment, not readily available to potential fly ash users, so a second goal was preliminary development of rapid diagnostic tests founded on fundamental information. Lastly, Iowa Department of Transportation research indicated an interesting interdependency among coarse aggregate type, fly ash and concrete's resistance to freeze-thaw action. Thus a third charge of this research project was to verify and determine the cause for the phenomena. One objective of this project was to determine properties of Iowa fly ashes and evaluate their relevance to use of the material as an admixture of PCC. This phase of the research involved two approaches. The first involved the development of a rapid method for determining quantitative elemental composition while the second was aimed at both qualitative and quantitative determination of compounds. X-ray fluorescence techniques were adapted for rapid determination of elemental composition of fly ash. The analysis was performed using a Siemens SR-200 sequential x-ray spectrometer controlled by a PDP-11-03 microcomputer. The spectrometer was equipped with a ten sample specimen chamber and four interchangeable analyzing crystals. Unfiltered excitation radiation was generated using a chromium tube at 50 KV and 48 ma. Programs for the spectrometer were developed by the Siemens Corporation.

This piece of work which is Identification of Research Portfolio for Development of Filtration Equipment aims at presenting a novel approach to identify promising research topics in the field of design and development of filtration equipment and processes. The projected approach consists of identifying technological problems often encountered in filtration processes. The sources of information for the problem retrieval were patent documents and scientific papers that discussed filtration equipments and processes. The problem identification method adopted in this work focussed on the semantic nature of a sentence in order to generate series of subject-action-object structures. This was achieved with software called Knowledgist. List of problems often encountered in filtration processes that have been mentioned in patent documents and scientific papers were generated. These problems were carefully studied and categorized. Suggestions were made on the various classes of these problems that need further investigation in order to propose a research portfolio. The uses and importance of other methods of information retrieval were also highlighted in this work.

Työn tarkoituksena on ymmärtää liikkeenjohdon asiantuntijoiden käsityksiä omasta työn ja muun elämän yhteensovittamisesta. Tavoitteena on saada selville miten konsultin ammatti, työn ja muun elämän yhteensovittaminen, yrittäjyys sekä tietotyö toteutuvat haastateltujen elämässä. Tutkimus on laadullinen ja aineistolähtöinen. Tutkimusta varten on haastateltu kymmentä TMC-sertifikaatin suorittanutta liikkeenjohdon asiantuntijaa, joista suurin osa on konsultteja ja yksityisyrittäjiä. Tutkimustulokset osoittavat, että haastatellut liikkeenjohdon asiantuntijat ovat tyytyväisiä työssään ja pitävät työn ja muun elämän yhteensovittamistaan onnistuneena. Yrittäjyydessä haastateltavat arvostavat itsenäisyyttä ja tiettyä vapautta työaikojen, työmäärän ja työn sisällön suhteen. Konsultin työtä he pitäväthaastavana, mielenkiintoisena ja vaihtelevana. Haastateltavat kokevat työnsä mielekkääksi ja asioiden olevan omassa hallinnassa, mikä auttaa jaksamaan ajoittain pitkiä ja raskaita työpäiviä. Ei niinkään työpäivän pituus, vaan ennemmin haastateltavien lasten iät vaikuttavat työn ja muun elämän yhteensovittamisen onnistumiseen. Haastateltavat, joilla on pieniä lapsia, potevat enemmän huonoa omatuntoa työn ja perheen yhteensovittamisesta kuin haastateltavat, joilla on aikuiset lapset. Ongelmia työn ja muun elämän yhteensovittamiseen saattavat ajoittain aiheuttaa liian suuri työmäärä, kiire, huono omatunto perheen kanssa vietetyn ajan vähyydestä, ajan riittämättömyys omille harrastuksille ja ystäville sekä pitkät työmatkat poissa kotoa. Työmäärän vaihtelevuus auttaa löytämään välillä rauhallisempia aikoja kiireellisemmistä viikoista palautumiseen.

Työn tavoitteena oli kehittää teräspalkkirakenteiden palosuunnittelua ja palosuojauksen toteutusta öljynjalostamolla käytettävien kantavien teräspalkkirakenteiden osalta. Lisäksi tavoitteena oli luoda suunnitteluohjeen runko palomitoituksen toteuttamiseksi Neste Engineering Oy:ssä. Ongelmakohtia työssä olivat rakenteiden kapasiteettien tarkka määritys, toimivien toteutusratkaisujen etsiminen, sekä öljynjalostamolla mitoituspalona käytettävän hiilivetypalon SFS-ENV-1992-1-2 käyttö yleisemmin mitoituspalona käytettävän standardipalo ISO-834 sijaan. Työssä perehdyttiin kirjallisuuden perusteella eri palosuojausmenetelmiin. Tarkemman jatkotutkimuksen kohteeksi otettiin jo käytössä hyväksi havaittu teräsputkipalkkien sisäpuoleinen betonitäyttö. Menetelmässä teräsputkipalkin oletetaan kantavan kuormat normaalitilassa ja sisällä olevan raudoitetun betonin palossa. Palkkirakenteiden kapasiteettimitoitus määritettiin laskennallisesti poikkileikkauksille. Mitoitus perustuu palkissa tapahtuvien sisäisten venymien ja puristumien tarkasteluun, sekä poikkileikkauksen tarkan lämpötilajakauman huomioimiseen. Raudoitustankojen ankkurointia palkki-pilari-liitoksessa kehitettiin valmistuksen kannalta yksioikoisemmaksi ja helpommin toteutettavaksi. Palkkien raudoituksiin suunniteltiin kierremuhvijatkoksella toteutettava ankkurointimenetelmä, jolla palkkien raudoitustangot saadaan ankkuroitua täydestä kapasiteetistaan tapauskohtaisesti pilarin vastakkaisella puolella olevaan palkkiin tai ankkurointikappaleella pilariin. Teräsputkipilarin betonivalun vaihtoehtoisiin menetelmiin tutustuttiin. Pilarin alapäähän asennettavan venttiilin läpi tapahtuva täyttö helpottaa betonointityövaihetta. Tutkimuksen tuloksena luotiin suunnitteluohjeen runko, jonka pohjalta voidaan tehdä lopullinen ohje. Myös työn tuloksena saatu laskentaohjelma palkkien momentti-kapasiteetin ja pilarin nurjahduskuorman laskemiseksi helpottaa suunnittelua. Raudoituksen ankkurointiin ja betonointiin esitettyjen menetelmien toimivuus on syytä kokeilla käytännössä ja tehdä jatkokehitys näistä saatavien kokemusten pohjalta.

Among instruments measuring spiritual well-being, the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Spiritual well-being (FACIT-Sp-12) is the most widely used instrument in research. It has been validated in patients suffering from cancer or HIV/AIDS, but has rarely been used in elderly patients. The objectives of this study were to determine the psychometric properties and suitability of the FACIT-Spto assess spiritual well-being in hospitalized elderly patients. This cross-sectional study uses a mixed method approach. Subjects were patients (N = 208), aged 65 years and older, consecutively admitted in post-acute rehabilitation. Psychometric properties of the FACITSp were investigated. The internal structure of the FACIT-Sp (factor structure and internal consistency) was assessed. Convergent validity of the FACIT-Sp was assessed using the Spiritual Distress Assessment Tool (SDAT), the question "Are you at peace?" and the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS). Predictive validity was assessed using length of stay (LOS) and discharge destination. Understanding and interpretation of FACIT-Sp items were consecutively assessed in a sub-sample of 135 patients. Results show that FACIT-Sp scores ranged from 7 to 46 (mean 29.6 ± 7.8); 23.1% of the patients had high spiritual well-being. Cronbach's α was g ood ( 0.85). Item-to-total correlations were all significant (0.34 to 0.73). Principal component analyses performed with 2 or 3 factors were only moderately consistent with previous work. FACIT-Sp correlated with SDAT, "Are you at peace?" and GDS (Rho = −0.45, P < 0.001; 0.51, P < 0.001 and −0.38, P < 0.001). No association was found with LOS or discharge destination. Spontaneous comments about one or more FACIT-Sp items were made by 97/135 (71.9%). Specifically, items that address purpose and meaning in life were frequently found difficult to answer. Analyses suggest that the FACIT-Sp may underestimate spiritual well-being in older patients. In conclusion, despite having acceptable psychometric properties, the FACIT-Sp presents limitations for measurement of spiritual well-being in hospitalized elderly patients.

Digital learner portfolios are of growing importance in higher education as the sector seeks new teaching-learning-assessment methods which promote students" autonomy as managers of their own virtual learning environment. The purpose of this study was to analyse descriptively the undergraduate students" perceptions, attitudes and behaviour when using an eportfolio to support their learning and assessment in practice based courses at two traditional Spanish universities. The participants were 88 students, who were studying through a blended learning mode. Data were collected through questionnaires: a computer experience survey, another which examined the psychological, pedagogical and technological dimensions of eportfolios use. Further, an individual overall reflection was obtained from each student to help gain an understanding of their experiences of using the eportfolio. A mixed-method analysis was applied in order to study the impact of this technological innovation on students and their satisfaction. The results showed that the students had positive opinions and self-efficiency through the eportfolio as a tool to manage their learning and assessment during a semester, especially from the second month of use. However, the expected impact on their learning was not so significant. Nevertheless, the students emphasised that the eportfolio was valuable as a personal developmental learning tool.

The age-old adage goes that nothing in this world lasts but change, and this generation has indeed seen changes that are unprecedented. Business managers do not have the luxury of going with the flow: they have to plan ahead, to think strategies that will meet the changing conditions, however stormy the weather seems to be. This demand raises the question of whether there is something a manager or planner can do to circumvent the eye of the storm in the future? Intuitively, one can either run on the risk of something happening without preparing, or one can try to prepare oneself. Preparing by planning for each eventuality and contingency would be impractical and prohibitively expensive, so one needs to develop foreknowledge, or foresight past the horizon of the present and the immediate future. The research mission in this study is to support strategic technology management by designing an effective and efficient scenario method to induce foresight to practicing managers. The design science framework guides this study in developing and evaluating the IDEAS method. The IDEAS method is an electronically mediated scenario method that is specifically designed to be an effective and accessible. The design is based on the state-of-the-art in scenario planning, and the product is a technology-based artifact to solve the foresight problem. This study demonstrates the utility, quality and efficacy of the artifact through a multi-method empirical evaluation study, first by experimental testing and secondly through two case studies. The construction of the artifact is rigorously documented as justification knowledge as well as the principles of form and function on the general level, and later through the description and evaluation of instantiations. This design contributes both to practice and foundation of the design. The IDEAS method contributes to the state-of-the-art in scenario planning by offering a light-weight and intuitive scenario method for resource constrained applications. Additionally, the study contributes to the foundations and methods of design by forging a clear design science framework which is followed rigorously. To summarize, the IDEAS method is offered for strategic technology management, with a confident belief that it will enable gaining foresight and aid the users to choose trajectories past the gales of creative destruction and off to a brighter future.

Within caring science, investigations and explorations have been carried out on the ontology of caring, and many aspects of the field have been the subject of scientific research. The main subject for this study is grounded on the human need for aesthetics. The purpose is to find how the aesthetic dimension is taken into consideration and how the aesthetic surroundings are evaluated and attended to, in the general hospitals in Norway. The theoretical perspective is founded basicly on the study of litterature from caring science and philosophy. The aim is to develop a disposition for a framework on the aesthetic surroundings in the hospitals, and to develop phenomenological and ontological knowledge and understanding of the aesthetic dimension. The study aspires to attain a deeper understanding of the aesthetic acknowledgment and of the aesthetic needs. The focus is how the aesthetic dimension can promote health and wellbeing, both for patients and for the caring staff, in the general hospitals and why the aesthetic dimension should be obligatory in `evident care¿. The study concentrates on 11 selected categories in the hospital environment, where aesthetics is of importance. The research is implemented on 5 part studies: 1. part is a study of caring science and philosophical theories about aesthetics, as a framework for the investigation. 2. part is a survey of the physical environment, in Norwegian somatic hospitals, with focus on aesthetics. This by analyzing the strategy plans for the hospitals. 3. and 4. part is questionnaires to patients and nurses to get their opinion and evaluation of the aesthetic environment in the hospitals they are connected to, and their opinion on how this influences the health and wellness for both patients and caring staff. 5. part is qualitative interviews with 16 experts, to get their opinion and evaluation of the aesthetic environment in hospitals they are or have been connected to. How would the experts like the aesthetic surroundings to be, and also their opinion on what influence they think aesthetics has on health and wellness. The main literature of caring science is rooted in K. Erikssons caring theory as well as philosophic literature; mainly I. Kant, Platon and Y. Hirn's theories on aesthetics. Various scientificresearchers of aesthetics have also been referred to. The methodological approach is a triangulation with a hermeneutic exploration, where H.G. Gadamer and Ricoeur provides the inspirational foundation. The findings and conclusions result in the development of new hypothesis for the caring science foundation and suggestions, a disposition for a framework related to future planning of the aesthetic environments in general hospitals. It might be said that a common thread arises/appears in the invariance's (invariables) that are discerned from the analysis and interpretation of the interviews and also important angles shows in the variances that crystallized. Based on the conclusions the study confirms that there is a clearconnection between health, wellness and aesthetics in the environment and that it is an ethical obligationfor those in the caring professions to be aware of and attend to the aesthetic dimension.

Pk-IFRS -standardi on pk-yritysten sekä niiden tilinpäätösten käyttäjien erityistarpeita ajatellen kehitetty kansainvälinen tilinpäätösstandardi. Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena on selvittää, mitä etuja ja ongelmia standardin soveltamiseen liittyy Euroopan unionin pk-yritysten keskuudessa. Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan erityisesti tilinpäätösten laatijoiden ja käyttäjien näkemyksiä standardin eduista ja ongelmista sekä tilinpäätösinformaation vertailukelpoisuudesta. Alatavoitteena on myös selvittää, mitkä tekijät vaikuttavat standardin kannatukseen ja vastustukseen. Tutkimus on laadullinen. Sen empiirinen aineisto muodostuu kommenttikirjeistä, joita eri Euroopan valtioiden sidosryhmät lähettivät vastauksiksi standardia koskeneeseen EU-komission konsultaatioon. Pk-IFRS:n soveltamispäätöstä tehtäessä on kyse laatijoille koituvien kustannusten ja käyttäjille aiheutuvien hyötyjen tasapainottelusta. Tutkimuksesta käy kuitenkin ilmi, että pk-IFRS ei ole optimaalinen ratkaisu EU:n pk-yrityksiä ja niiden tilinpäätösten käyttäjiä ajatellen. Tilinpäätösten käyttäjät kokevat EU:n tilinpäätösdirektiivien tarjoavan riittävän vertailukelpoisuuden tason. Kansainvälistä liiketoimintaa harjoittavien pk-yritysten kannalta pk-IFRS olisi kuitenkin edullinen vaihtoehto. Standardia kohtaan esitettyihin puoltaviin ja vastustaviin näkökantoihin vaikuttaa oleellisesti se, kuinka paljon valtion kansalliset laskentakäytännöt eroavat pk-IFRS:stä. Standardin vastustajille luonteenomaista on, että ne edustavat kontinentaalisia valtioita, joiden kirjanpidon ja verotuksen välillä on läheinen yhteys. Sidosryhmistä erityisesti tilintarkastusyhteisöt, tilitoimistot yms. laskentaorganisaatiot kannattavat standardia.

Outlier detection is an important form of data analysis because outliers in several cases contain the interesting and important pieces of information. In the recent years, many different outlier detection algorithms have been devised for finding different kinds of outliers in varying contexts and environments. Some effort has been put to study how to effectively combine different outlier detection methods. The combination of outlier detection algorithms as an ensemble was studied in this thesis by designing a modular framework for outlier detection, which combines arbitrary outlier detection techniques. This work resulted in an example implementation of the framework. Outlier detection capability of the ensemble method was validated using datasets and methods found in outlier detection research. The framework achieved better results than the individual outlier algorithms. Future research includes how to handle large datasets effectively and the possibilities for real-time outlier monitoring.
