Electrospun nanofibres have emerged as important fibrous materials for diverse applications. They have been shown excellent toughening results when they are applied as interlayer materials between carbon/epoxy laminas in the structural carbon fibre reinforced epoxy matrix composites. They also exhibit synergistic modification effects when they are combined with carbon nanofibres in the thermosetting polymer matrix. In this study, electrospun polyetherketone cardo (PEK-C) nanofibres were used in two ways: directly electrospun onto the surface of carbon fabric [1], and blended with epoxy resin in the form of PEK-C/VGCNF (vapour grown carbon nanofibre) composite nanofibres[2].The interlaminar fracture toughness, flexural properties and thermal mechanical properties of the modified systems were investigated.

Compared to the neat matrix material, FRC has highly favorable mechanical properties, and their strength-to-weight ratios are superior. In addition, FRCs have potential for use in many applications in dentistry and are expected to gain increasing applications in the future. This book includes both review and research papers in different FRC areas from contributors around the world.

Nanoparticle reinforced metal matrix possess much better mechanical properties over microparticle reinforced metal matrix composites as well as corresponding monolithic matrix materials. However, the fabrication methods of nanoparticle reinforced metal matrix composites are complex and expensive. This paper investigates and discusses the mechanisms of all the fabrication process, such as powder metallurgy, liquid metallurgy, compocasting and hybrid methods, available in the literature. This gives an insight on challenges associated with different processes and ways to improve the fabrication processes. It is found that modified traditional fabrication processes are mainly applied for these materials. The main problem is to achieve reasonably uniform distribution of nanoparticle reinforcement in the methods other than mechanical alloying when the volume or weight percent of reinforcement is higher (> 1%).

This work investigated the effect of woven E-glass mass (25 g/m2, 50 g/m2, 85 g/m2, 135 g/m2) on the painted surface finish of various thermoset (EPIKOTETM RIM935, EPIKOTETM 04434, Ultratec LpTM ES300, Ultratec LpTM SPV6035) carbon fibre composite laminates, before and after aging at 95 °C for 168 h. The as-moulded laminate surfaces were evaluated using surface profilometry techniques and the painted and aged surfaces were evaluated using a wave-scan distinctness of image (DOI) instrument. It was found that the 25 g/m2 E-glass surface layer assisted with reducing the roughness of the as-moulded surfaces and the long-term waviness of the painted surfaces due to the increase in resin-richness at the surface. The EPIKOTETM 04434 resin system that contained diglycidyl ether of bisphenol F (DGEBF) epoxy had the least change in long-term waviness with thermal aging due to the rigid fluorene-based backbone in comparison to the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) systems.

In this work, micro-composite materials were produced by incorporating 3-mm long reclaimed short carbon fibers into bio-based nylon 11 via melt compounding. A systematic fiber length distribution analysis was performed after the masterbatching, compounding and an injection moulding processes using optical microscopy images. It was found that the large majority of the fibers were within the 200-300 μm in length range after the injection moulding process. The mechanical (flexural and tensile), thermo-mechanical, and creep properties of the injection moulded materials are reported. We found that an enhancement in flexural and Young's modulus of 25% and 14%, respectively, could be attained with 2 wt% carbon fiber loading whilst no significant drawback on the ductility and toughness of the matrix was observed. The creep resistance and recovery of the nylon 11, tested using dynamic mechanical thermal analysis at room temperature and 65°C, was significantly improved by up to 30% and 14%, respectively, after loading with carbon fiber. This work provides an insight into the property improvement of the bio-based polymer nylon 11 using a small amount of a reclaimed engineered material. © 2014 Society of Plastics Engineers.

Abstract We report that a prestressing technique similar to that traditionally used in prestressed concrete can improve the mechanical performance of flax fibre spun yarn reinforced polymer-matrix composites. Prestressing a low twist yarn not only introduces tension to the constituent fibres and compressive stress to the matrix similar as in prestressed concretes, but also causes changes to the yarn structure that lead to the rearrangement of fibres within the yarn. Prestressing increases the fibre packing density in yarn, causes fibre straightening, and reduces fibre obliquity in yarn (improved fibre alignment along yarn axis). The aim of this work is to study the replacement of currently used thermoplastics by composites reinforced with vegetable fibers with several advantages, mainly better mechanical properties, low weight and competitive cost compared to its counterparts. Extrusion and injection molding processes were studied using polypropylene (PP) matrix. The raw materials used were sugar cane bagasse, elephant grass, wood, milk cartons and recycled polypropylene. The composites were tested for bending, tension, hardness and impact resistance, following ASTM standards. The results obtained were extremely positive since they proved that natural fibers as reinforcement can be an important alternative to replace talc and other fillers.

In order to cooperate in minimizing the problems of the current and growing volume of waste, this work aim at the production of panels made from industrial waste -thermoplastic (polypropylene; polyethylene and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) reinforced with agro-industrial waste - peach palm waste (shells and sheaths). The properties of the panels like density, thickness swelling, water absorption and moisture content were evaluated using the ASTM D1037; EN 317; and ANSI A208.1 standards regarding particle boards. Good results were obtained with formulations of 100% plastic waste; 70% waste plastics and 30% peach palm waste; and 60% waste plastics and 40% peach palm waste.

Curauá fiber processing characterization has been performed throughout the different processing steps. Unsaturated polyester has been used as matrix in the production of curauá reinforced composite samples. Compression molding process has been used to prepare the samples. Tensile strength, impact resistance, flexural strength, Young's modulus and elongation at break have been accessed for curauá composites in comparison with fiberglass composites. Mechanical properties were found not to attend the company's internal standards specification. However, the work has shown some alternatives to solve these problems such as the modification of equipment characteristics and resin formulation, the necessity of incorporation of a higher content of fiber and the possibility of using a new type of filler. This work has been performed at Tapetes Sao Carlos-Brazil with the cooperation of the DaimlerChrysler Research Center Team in Ulm - Germany. The objective of the present paper is to report the results obtained with natural fiber reinforced unsaturated polyester (UP) composites, concerning surface quality measurements. The fibers that have been chosen for this work were sisal and curaua. The samples were produced by compression molding technique and afterwards submitted to three different tests, namely: a) thermal aging; b) water absorption and c) artificial weathering. The surface parameters measured before and after the tests were gloss, haze, short and long-waviness. The results have shown that after the tests there is a high loss of gloss, a high increase in haze, and a high increase in short and long-waviness as well. Curaua reinforced composites had a slightly better behavior when compared with sisal reinforced composites. The effect of the presence of filler and the addition of thermoplastic polyester (TP) on the material behavior has not been evidently detected. This result shows that the conventional technology/methods applied to UP-Fiberglass systems cannot be transferred to natural fibers without any modification. The fiber-matrix interaction and its response to the presence of additives must be fully understood before a successful processing route can be developed for painted natural fibers reinforced UP. Aim. This work tested the effect of the addition of Al2O3/GdAlO3 longitudinal fibers in different contents to veneering porcelain of two dental all ceramic systems. Methods: Fibers (0.5 mm diameter) obtained by the Laser Heated Pedestal Growth (LHPG) method were added to bar-shaped specimens made by veneer porcelain (monolayers) or both the veneer and the core ceramic (bilayers) of two all-ceramic systems: In-Ceram Alumina - glass infiltrated alumina composite (GIA) and In-Ceram 2000 AL Cubes - alumina polycrystal (AP) (VITA Zahnfabrik). The longitudinal fibers were added to veneering porcelain (VM7) in two different proportions: 10 or 17 vol%. The bars were divided into nine experimental conditions (n = 10) according to material used: VM7 porcelain monolayers, VM7/GIA, VM7/AP; and according to the amount of fibers within the porcelain layer: no fibers, 10 vol% or 17 vol%. After grinding and polishing the specimens were submitted to a three point bending test (crosshead speed = 0.5 mm/min) with porcelain positioned at tensile side. Data were analyzed by means of one-way ANOVA and a Tukey's test (alpha = 5%). Scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) was conducted for fractographic analysis. Results. Regarding the groups without fiber addition, VM7/AP showed the highest flexural strength (MPa), followed by VM7/GIA and VM7 monolayers. The addition of fibers led to a numerical increase in flexural strength for all groups. For VM7/GIA bilayers the addition of 17 vol% of fibers resulted in a significant 48% increase in the flexural strength compared to the control group. Fractographic analysis revealed that the crack initiation site was in porcelain at the tensile surface. Cracks also propagated between fibers before heading for the alumina core. Conclusions. The addition of 17 vol% of Al2O3/GdAlO3 longitudinal fibers to porcelain/glass infiltrated alumina bilayers significantly improved its flexural strength. 10 vol% or 17 vol% of fibers inclusion increased the flexural strength for all groups.
