Background: Spontaneous gastrointestinal neoplasms in non-human primates are commonly seen in aged individuals. Due to genetic similarities between human and non-human primates, scientists have shown increasing interest in terms of comparative oncology studies.Case presentation: The present study is related to a case of an intestinal leiomyoma in a black crested macaque (Macaca nigra), kept on captivity by Mateca a Zoo, Pereira City, Colombia. The animal had abdominal distension, anorexia, vomiting, diarrhea and behavioral changes. Clinical examination showed an increased volume in the upper right abdominal quadrant caused by a neoplastic mass. The patient died during the surgical procedure. Necropsy revealed several small nodules in the peritoneum with adhesion to different portions of the small and large intestines, liver, stomach and diaphragm. Tissue samples were collected, routinely processed and stained by H&E. Microscopic examination revealed a mesenchymal tumor limited to tunica muscularis, resembling normal smooth muscle cells. Neoplastic cells were positive for alpha-smooth muscle actin and vimentin, and negative for cytokeratin AE1/AE3 by immunohistochemistry. Those morphological and immunohistochemical findings allowed to diagnose the intestinal leiomyoma referred above. Conclusion: Neoplastic diseases in primates have multifaceted causes. Their manifestations are understudied, leading to a greater difficulty in detection and measurement of the real impact provides by this disease.

Evaluation of muscle tissue growth in Young Mediterranean Buffaloes slaughtered at different weights
Resumo:
This study evaluated muscle, adipose and bone tissue growth in young Mediterranean buffaloes slaughtered with different weights. Twenty eight non-castrated males, approximately 14 months old and 330 kilos, were distributed in four experimental and one control groups. Received the same diet during a non-fixed period and when reached the pre-established weights (450 kg, 480 kg, 510 kg, 540 kg) were fasted for 16 hours and slaughtered. NRC 1996, level 2, ruminal simulation program for non-castrated animals with a daily weight gain of 1.40 kg determined percentage composition of experimental diet (dry matter): coast cross hay (20.6%), corn silage (7.8%), cotton seed (8.2%), humid corn silage (46%) and commercial mineral concentrate (17.4%), representing 13% of crude protein and 2,68% of metabolizable energy (Mcal/kg). Feed was offered ad libitum twice daily. Slaughter of control group occurred after 30 days of an adaptation period. The other ones were weighted each 28 days until reached pre-established weight. Carcasses were chilled for 18 hours under -5 degrees C. Ninth, 10 degrees and 11 degrees ribs of the half left carcass were submitted to HH section and according to the statistical regression analysis (SAS, 1996), allometric coefficient value was negative (b<1) demonstrating the early growth of muscle in relation to empty carcass weight.

Several studies have assessed the morphology and thickness of hybrid layer, the dentin bend strengths as well as sealing ability of dentin adhesive systems. However, few in vivo studies have evaluated the biocompatibility of the adhesive systems following application to deep dentin or directly to the pulp of human teeth. Many studies performed in non-human primate teeth or teeth of rats have reported pulp healing and dentin bridging following pulp capping with bonding agents. In addition, a few clinical and radiographical reports of the success of resin pulp capping have been described in the dental literature. Objectives: the aim of this review was to evaluate the literature on pulp responses following total acid etching and application of adhesive resins on deep cavities or pulp exposures. In addition, the clinical/radiographical evidence for the apparent success of vital pulp therapy and results obtained from animal and human studies were compared and discussed.Significance and conclusions: the self-etching adhesive systems may be useful and safe when applied on dentin, In contrast, persistent inflammatory reactions as well as delay in pulpal healing and failure of dentin bridging were seen in human pulps capped with bonding agents. The results observed in animal teeth cannot be directly extrapolated to human clinical conditions. Consequently, vital pulp therapy using acidic agents and adhesive resins seems to be contraindicated. (C) 2000 Academy of Dental Materials. Published by Elsevier B.V. Ltd. All rights reserved.

The objective of this study was to determine requirements of calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), magnesium (Mg), potassium (K) and sodium (Na) for grazing zebu bovines. The experiment area was composed of Brachiaria decumbens paddocks. Twenty-seven non-castrated animals, with initial live weight of 311.0 kg and at an average age of 14 months were used. Three animals were slaughtered, after adaptation period, so they were used as control for estimates of empty body weight and initial body composition of animals in the experiment. Out of the 24 remaining animals, four were sent to the maintenance group with restrict grazing time to limit energy intake close to the maintenance level. The other 20 animals were distributed in four treatments: mineral mixture, self-control intake and three-times-a-week-offer frequency (offered on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays) and daily. Concentrations of all studied macro elements in empty body and empty body gain decreased as live weight increased. The ratios obtained for g Ca/100 g of retained protein and g P/100 g of retained protein were 9.18 and 4.72, respectively. Total dietary requirement of calcium was lower than the one recommended by NRC (2000), but P requirement was very close to that.

The present study investigated the effects of intranigral MPTP (1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine) infusion on rats treated with phosphatidylserine and evaluated in two memory tasks and on striatal dopamine levels. The results indicated that MPTP produced a significant decrease in the avoidance number in comparison to sham-operated and non-operated rats submitted to a two-way avoidance task. MPTP-lesioned rats exhibited an increase in the latencies to find the platform in cued version of the water maze in comparison to sham-operated and non-operated animals. The tested toxin reduced striatal dopamine levels in comparison to sham-operated and non-operated groups. A final surprising result was that phosphatidylserine was unable to reverse the cognitive deficits produced by MPTP or the reduction of striatal dopamine levels. In conclusion, the data suggest that MPTP is a good model to study the early impairment associated with Parkinson's disease and phosphatidylserine did not improve the memory impairment induced by MPTP. We studied the correlation among cellular immune response, the pattern of lung granulomatous lesions and alterations in spleen lymphoid structure in Swiss mice inoculated intravenously with Paracoccidioides brasiliensis strain 18. The animals were evaluated at 24, 48 and 96 h after infection and further studied weekly for 18 weeks by: (i) the macrophage migration inhibition test with phytohemagglutinin (PHA) and P. brasiliensis antigen (PbAg); and (ii) histopathology of the lung and spleen lesions. One group of animals was gamma -irradiated (8 Gy), infected under the same conditions and evaluated for the pattern of lung granulomatous lesions and spleen lymphoid structure at 24, 48 and 96 h after infection. During the first week of infection, the non-irradiated animals presented a positive response to PHA and PbAg, compact granulomas in the lungs and a typical hyperplasia of the spleen white pulp. However, from weeks 2 to 5, a depression of the cell-mediated immunity (CMI) response to PHA and PbAg was observed in association with granulomas presenting only large mononuclear cells and lacking both giant cells and a peripheral halo of small mononuclear cells. This pattern of granuloma formation was similar to that seen in gamma -irradiated animals, whose cells involved in CMI were absent. After week 7, the non-irradiated animals showed granulomas characterized by the presence of giant cells and a peripheral halo of small mononuclear cells. This type of granuloma was formed concomitantly with recovery of the CMI and of the lymphoid structure of the spleen. The results showed a correlation among granulomas composed of large mononuclear cells, hypoplasia of the splenic tissue and impaired CMI. This correlation indicated that although granuloma morphogenesis per se does not depend on the activation of CMI, this response is important at later stages during modulation of the cellular composition of the granulomas.

The effects of cyclosporine A (CSA) administration, started as early as renal lesion is induced, on the development of Adriamycin-induced nephropathy were assessed by comparing the time course of this nephropathy in rats receiving CSA with that in non-treated animals (group ADR) over 16 weeks. Throughout the experiment, no significant difference in proteinuria was observed between the groups. At the end of the experiment, there was no significant difference between the groups regarding the frequency of glomerular lesion (Group AADR: Md=23%, P25=15%, P75=75%; Group ADR-CSA: Md=48%, P25=11%, P75=70%); tubulointerstitial lesion index (Group ADR: Md=1.5, P25=1.0, P75=2.5); glomerulosclerosis area (Group ADR = 18.2 +/- 4.2%; Group ADR-CSA = 13.2 +/- 1.4%); and, interstitial fibrosis area (Group ADR+V: 1.75 +/- 0.10%; group ADR-CSA: 1.34 +/- 0.09%). In conclusion, CSA, when, administered since nephropathy induction does not change the course of the disease.

Objective Microsporidian Encephalitozoon cuniculi has been recognized as an opportunistic pathogen in immunosuppressed individuals, such as AIDS patients. The objective of the study was to develop pharmacologically immunosuppressed animals as a model of the natural occurring E. cuniculi infection. Methods Distint groups of adult Balb-C mice were immunosuppressed with different doses of dexamethasone (Dx, 3 or 5 mg/kg/day, intraperitoneal route - IP) and inoculated with E. cuniculi spores by IP route intraperitoneally. Control groups (inoculated animals but non-immunosuppressed and non-inoculated animals but immunosuppressed) were also used. The spores of E. cuniculi were previously cultivated in MDCK cells. The animals were sacrificed and necropsied at 7, 14, 21, 28 and 35 days post-inoculation. Tissue fragments were collected and processed for light microscopy studies, using Gram-chromotrope and hematoxylin-eosin staining techniques. Results In all immunosupressed and inoculated inoculated immunosuppressed mice, specially in those that received 5 mg/kg/day of dexamethasone, the most prominent necropsy findings were hepatomegaly and splenomegaly. The experimental inoculation resulted in a disseminated non-lethal infection, characterized by granulomatous lesions in several organs (liver lungs, kidneys, gut and brain) but notably in the hepatic tissue. Spores of E. cuniculi were only seen in few animals treated with 5 mg/kg/day of Dx at 35 days post-infection.Conclusions Microsporidiosis in Dx-immunosuppressed mice provides a useful model for studies of the microsporidial infection, resembling that one naturally occurring in immunodeficient individuals with AIDS.

The influence of fasting on the potential of diethylnitrosamine (DEN) to initiate liver cucinogenesis was tested in a medium-term assay using the development of putative preneoplastic altered foci of hepatocytes (AFH) as the endpoint. Male Wistar rats fasted for 48 hr were given a single ip injection of DEN (200 mg/kg body weight). Partial hepatectomies were carried out at wk 3 and the rats were killed at wk 8. Fasted rats exhibited a small increase in the numbers of AFH with glutathione S-transferase in the placental form and eosinophilic AFH when compared with non-fasted animals. However, after a 6-wk exposure to 0.05% sodium phenobarbital in the diet, there were no differences in the numbers of AFH between fasted and non-fasted animals. Fasting also increased DEN-dependent centrilobular cell necrosis and specifically drug metabolism as indicated in vivo by a decreased time of paralysis of the lower limbs induced by zoxazolamine (40 mg/kg body weight, ip) and by an unaltered sleeping time induced by sodium pentobarbital (40 mg/kg body weight, ip). The results indicate that although fasting during the initiation stage of carcinogenesis increases DEN hepatotoxicity, it does not interfere quantitatively with the development of liver preneoplastic lesions.
