In this study, the drug indomethacin, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory indoleacetic acid derivative and the complex of indomethacin and lanthanum (III) in solid form were synthesized and characterized by Thermogravimetry (TGA), Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and powder X-ray diffractometry (XRD), infrared vibrational spectroscopy by diffuse reflectance (FTIR) and complexometric titration with EDTA. With the TG curves it was possible to determine the stoichiometry of the complex as La(Ind)3·3.5H2O where Ind is the drug indomethacin. The result of thermal analyzes provided information on the thermal stability, enthalpy of dehydration and thermal behavior of the compounds. The infrared spectrum and with the aid of theoretical calculations suggests that the indomethacin is coordinated by the carboxylate group in the bidentate mode

Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) is an intestinal hormone that induces glucose-dependent stimulation of insulin secretion while suppressing glucagon secretion. Glucagon-like peptide-1 also increases beta cell mass and satiation while decelerating gastric emptying. Liraglutide is a fatty-acid derivative of GLP-1 with a protracted pharmacokinetic profile that is used in people for treatment of type II diabetes mellitus and obesity. The aim of this study was to determine the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of liraglutide in healthy cats. Hyperglycemic clamps were performed on days 0 (HGC) and 14 (LgHGC) in 7 healthy cats. Liraglutide was administered subcutaneously (0.6 mg/cat) once daily on days 8 through 14. Compared with the HGC (mean +/- standard deviation; 455.5 +/- 115.8 ng/L), insulin concentrations during LgHGC were increased (760.8 +/- 350.7 ng/L; P = 0.0022), glucagon concentrations decreased (0.66 +/- 0.4 pmol/L during HGC vs 0.5 +/- 0.4 pmol/L during LgHGC; P = 0.0089), and there was a trend toward an increased total glucose infused (median [range] = 1.61 (1.11-2.54) g/kg and 2.25 (1.64-3.10) g/kg, respectively; P = 0.087). Appetite reduction and decreased body weight (9% +/- 3%; P = 0.006) were observed in all cats. Liraglutide has similar effects and pharmacokinetics profile in cats to those reported in people. With a half-life of approximately 12 h, once daily dosing might be feasible; however, significant effects on appetite and weight loss may necessitate dosage or dosing frequency reductions. Further investigation of liraglutide in diabetic cats and overweight cats is warranted. (C) 2015 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Solid state Ln-4-Me-BP compounds, where Ln stands for heavier trivalent lanthanides (gadolinium to lutetium) and yttrium(III) and 4-Me-BP is 4-methylbenzylidenepyruvate (CH3-C6H4-CH=CH-COCOO-), have been synthesized. Elemental analysis, complexometry, X-ray powder diffractometry, infrared spectroscopy and simultaneous thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), have been used to characterise and to study the thermal behaviour of these compounds. The results provided information concerning the stoichiometry, crystallinity, ligand's denticity, thermal stability and thermal decomposition. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

We examined the effects of beta-pompilidotoxin (beta-PMTX), a neurotoxin derived from wasp venom. on synaptic transmission in the mammalian central nervous system (CNS). Using hippocampal slice preparations of rodents, we made both extracellular and intracellular recordings from the CA1 pyramidal neurons in response to stimulation of the Schaffer collateral/commissural fibers. Application of 5-10 muM beta-PMTX enhanced excitatory postsynaptic potentials (EPSPs) but suppressed the fast component of the inhibitory postsynaptic potentials (IPSPs). In the presence of 10 muM bicuculline, beta-PMTX potentiated EPSPs that were composed of both non-NMDA and NMDA receptor-mediated potentials. Potentiation of EPSPs was originated by repetitive firings of the prosynaptic axons, causing Summation of EPSPs. In the presence of 10 muM CNQX and 50 muM APV, beta-PMTX suppressed GABA(A) receptor-mediated fast IPSPs but retained GABA(B) receptor-mediated slow IPSPs. Our results suggest that beta-PMTX facilitates excitatory synaptic transmission by a presynaptic mechanism and that it causes overexcitation followed by block of the activity of some population of interneurons which regulate the activity of GABA(A) receptors. Eighty root canals of the premolars of 4 dogs, with vital pulp, were instrumented and filled during the same session with the Sealapex, CRCS, Sealer 26, and Apexit sealers, the animals were sacrificed 180 days after root canal filling and their maxillae and mandibles were removed and fixed in 10% formalin, After routine histologic processing, the sections were stained with hematoxylin-eosin and Mallory trichrome, Histopathologic analysis showed that Sealapex was the sealer that best permitted the deposition of mineralized tissue at the apical level and was the only sealer that provided complete sealing (37.5% of cases), With the use of Sealapex, no inflammatory infiltrate occurred and there was no reabsorption of mineralized tissues, In contrast, partial sealing and a moderate inflammatory infiltrate occurred with the use of CRCS, When Apexit and Sealer 26 were used the absence of sealing was frequent and active reabsorption of mineralized tissues occurred in most cases, the inflammatory infiltrate predominating with the use of Apexit was of the severe type, whereas with the use of Sealer 26 the inflammatory infiltrate was mild or absent.

Used as catalysts even in organic and inorganic molecules, as additives on catalysts, electrochromic films on smart windows the tungsten trioxide have been largely studied on the lasts decades, but there is just a few about it's luminescence. Using as precursors nitric acid and sodium tungstate the tungsten trioxide were been prepared thru wet process then treating on thermic and hydrothermal treatments. Where been evaluated the effects of methodology, nitric acid concentration, duration and temperature of treatments. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman scattering spectroscopy (RSS), Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy (PLS) and X-ray excited optical luminescence (XEOL). Hydrated phases of tungsten trioxide were obtained through hydrothermal treatments and the non-hydrated phases occur with thermic treatments. The acid concentration has the ability to determine the major phase formed as well the temperature determine the hydratation of the product. With lower temperatures dihydrate phase were preferable formed and with the rise of temperature, the water molecules were lost up to the fractionary hydratation and then the non-hydrated phase with higher temperatures depending on the atmosphere used on the thermal treatment. Doping the system with europium ions even substituting tungsten or in the interstices of the matrix were not been successful, as well the XEOL spectroscopy intensity were null and quite low for ultraviolet and visible excitation photoluminescence because of oxygen defect levels localized into the prohibited band.

Butterfat is usually the most expensive ingredient of ice cream; hence, great care is necessary in controllng its use. The manufacturer of ice cream, whether doing a large or a small volume of business, must manufacture a product that will comply with the established fat standard. Some means of determining the percentage of butterfat in the product must be available in order to establish this control. This 1930 research bulletin discusses the different testing equipment used to test butterfat in ice cream.
