In this article, we consider the single-machine scheduling problem with past-sequence-dependent (p-s-d) setup times and a learning effect. The setup times are proportional to the length of jobs that are already scheduled; i.e. p-s-d setup times. The learning effect reduces the actual processing time of a job because the workers are involved in doing the same job or activity repeatedly. Hence, the processing time of a job depends on its position in the sequence. In this study, we consider the total absolute difference in completion times (TADC) as the objective function. This problem is denoted as 1/LE, (Spsd)/TADC in Kuo and Yang (2007) ('Single Machine Scheduling with Past-sequence-dependent Setup Times and Learning Effects', Information Processing Letters, 102, 22-26). There are two parameters a and b denoting constant learning index and normalising index, respectively. A parametric analysis of b on the 1/LE, (Spsd)/TADC problem for a given value of a is applied in this study. In addition, a computational algorithm is also developed to obtain the number of optimal sequences and the range of b in which each of the sequences is optimal, for a given value of a. We derive two bounds b* for the normalising constant b and a* for the learning index a. We also show that, when a < a* or b > b*, the optimal sequence is obtained by arranging the longest job in the first position and the rest of the jobs in short processing time order.

The inception of cavitation in the steady flow of liquids around bodies is seen to depend upon the real fluid flow around the bodies as well as the supply of nucleating cavitation sources—or nuclei—within the fluid. A primary distinction is made between bodies having a laminar separation or not having a laminar separation. The former group is relatively insensitive to the nuclei concentration whereas the latter is much more sensitive. Except for the case of fully separated wake flows and for gaseous cavitation by diffusion the cavitation inception index tends always to be less than the magnitude of the minimum pressure coefficient and only approaches that value for high Reynolds numbers in flows well supplied with nuclei.

Systematic observations of light detection and ranging (LIDAR) to detect elevated aerosol layer were carried out at Manora Peak (29.4 degrees N, 79.5 degrees E, similar to 1960 m a.s.l), Nainital, in the Central Himalayas during January-May 2008. In spite of being a remote, high-altitude site, an elevated aerosol layer is observed quite frequently in the altitude range of 2460-4460 m a.s.l with a width of similar to 2 km during the observation period. We compare these profiles with the vertical profiles observed over Gadanki (13.5 degrees N, 79.2 degrees E, similar to 370 m a.s.l), a tropical station, where no such elevated aerosol layer was found. Further, there is a steady increase in aerosol optical depth (AOD) from January (winter) to May (summer) from 0.043 to 0.742, respectively, at Manora Peak, indicating aerosol loading in the atmosphere. Our observations show north-westerly winds indicating the convective lifting of aerosols from far-off regions followed by horizontal long-range transport. The presence of strongly absorbing and scattering aerosols in the elevated layer resulted in a relatively large diurnal mean aerosol surface radiative forcing efficiency (forcing per unit optical depth) of about -65 and -63 W m(-2) and the corresponding mean reduction in the observed net solar flux at the surface (cooling effect) is as high as -22 and -30 W m(-2). The reduction of radiation will heat the lower atmosphere by redistributing the radiation with heating rate of 1.13 and 1.31 K day(-1) for April and May 2008, respectively, in the lower atmosphere.

In this work, several tertiary amine-based diaryl diselenides were synthesized and evaluated for their glutathione peroxidase (GPx)-like antioxidant activities using hydrogen peroxide, tert-butyl hydroperoxide and cumene hydroperoxide as substrates and thiophenol (PhSH) and glutathione (GSH) as co-substrates. A comparison of the GPx-like activity of 4-methoxy-substituted N,N-dialkylbenzylamine-based diselenides with that of the corresponding 6-methoxy-substituted compounds indicates that the activity highly depends on the position of the methoxy substituent. Although the methoxy group at 4- and 6-position alters the electronic properties of selenium, the substitution at the 6-position provides the required steric protection for some of the key intermediates in the catalytic cycle. A detailed experimental and theoretical investigation reveals that the 6-methoxy substituent prevents the undesired thiol exchange reactions at the selenium centers in the selenenyl sulfide intermediates. The 6-methoxy substituent also prevents the formation of seleninic and selenonic acids. When PhSH is used as the thiol co-substrate, the 4-methoxy-substituted diselenides exhibit GPx-like activity similar to that of the parent compounds as the 4-methoxy substituent does not block the selenium center in the selenenyl sulfide intermediates from thiol exchange reactions. In contrast, the 4-methoxy substituent significantly enhances the GPx-like activity of the diselenides when glutathione (GSH) is used as the co-substrate. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The redox regulation of protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B) via the unusual transformation of its sulfenic acid (PTP1B-SOH) to a cyclic sulfenyl amide intermediate is studied by using small molecule chemical models. These studies suggest that the sulfenic acids derived from the H2O2-mediated reactions o-amido thiophenols do not efficiently cyclize to sulfenyl amides and the sulfenic acids produced in situ can be trapped by using methyl iodide. Theoretical calculations suggest that the most stable conformer of such sulfenic acids are stabilized by n(O) -> sigma* (S-OH) orbital interactions, which force the -OH group to adopt a position trans to the S center dot center dot center dot O interaction, leading to an almost linear arrangement of the O center dot center dot center dot S-O moiety and this may be the reason for the slow cyclization of such sulfenic acids to their corresponding sulfenyl amides. On the other hand, additional substituents at the 6-position of o-amido phenylsulfenic acids that can induce steric environment and alter the electronic properties around the sulfenic acid moiety by S center dot center dot center dot N or S center dot center dot center dot O nonbonded interactions destabilize the sulfenic acids by inducing strain in the molecule. This may lead to efficient the cyclization of such sulfenic acids. This model study suggests that the amino acid residues in the close proximity of the sulfenic acid moiety in PTP1B may play an important role in the cyclization of PTP1B-SOH to produce the corresponding sulfenyl amide.

A one-dimensional coupled multi-physics based model has been developed to accurately compute the effects of electrostatic, mechanical, and thermal field interactions on the electronic energy band structure in group III-nitrides thin film heterostructures. Earlier models reported in published literature assumes electro-mechanical field with uniform temperature thus neglecting self-heating. Also, the effects of diffused interface on the energy band structure were not studied. We include these effects in a self-consistent manner wherein the transport equation is introduced along with the electro-mechanical models, and the lattice structural variation as observed in experiments are introduced at the interface. Due to these effects, the electrostatic potential distribution in the heterostructure is altered. The electron and hole ground state energies decrease by 5% and 9%, respectively, at a relative temperature of 700 K, when compared with the results obtained from the previously reported electro-mechanical model assuming constant and uniform temperature distribution. A diffused interface decreases the ground state energy of electrons and holes by about 11% and 9%, respectively, at a relative temperature of 700 K when compared with the predictions based on uniform temperature based electro-mechanical model. We study the production of the lightest neutralinos in the process e(+)e(-) -> chi(0)(1)chi(0)(1)gamma in supersymmetric grand unified models for the International Linear Collider energies with longitudinally polarized beams. We consider cases where the standard model gauge group is unified into the grand unified gauge groups SU(5), or SO(10). We have carried out a comprehensive study of this process in the SU(5) and SO(10) grand unified theories which includes the QED radiative corrections. We compare and contrast the dependence of the signal cross section on the grand unified gauge group, and on the different representations of the grand unified gauge group, when the electron and positron beams are longitudinally polarized. To assess the feasibility of experimentally observing the radiative production process, we have also considered in detail the background to this process coming from the radiative neutrino production process e(+)e(-)-> nu(nu) over bar gamma with longitudinally polarized electron and positron beams. In addition we have also considered the supersymmetric background coming from the radiative production of scalar neutrinos in the process e(+)e(-) -> (nu) over tilde(nu) over tilde*gamma with longitudinally polarized beams. The process can be a major background to the radiative production of neutralinos when the scalar neutrinos decay invisibly.

We examine the deflected mirage mediation supersymmetry breaking (DMMSB) scenario, which combines three supersymmetry breaking scenarios, namely anomaly mediation, gravity mediation and gauge mediation using the one-loop renormalization group invariants (RGIs). We examine the effects on the RGIs at the threshold where the gauge messengers emerge, and derive the supersymmetry breaking parameters in terms of the RGIs. We further discuss whether the supersymmetry breaking mediation mechanism can be determined using a limited set of invariants, and derive sum rules valid for DMMSB below the gauge messenger scale. In addition we examine the implications of the measured Higgs mass for the DMMSB spectrum.

In the last few years, there has been remarkable progress in the development of group III-nitride based materials because of their potential application in fabricating various optoelectronic devices such as light emitting diodes, laser diodes, tandem solar cells and field effect transistors. In order to realize these devices, growth of device quality heterostructures are required. One of the most interesting properties of a semiconductor heterostructure interface is its Schottky barrier height, which is a measure of the mismatch of the energy levels for the majority carriers across the heterojunction interface. Recently, the growth of non-polar III-nitrides has been an important subject due to its potential improvement on the efficiency of III-nitride-based opto-electronic devices. It is well known that the c-axis oriented optoelectronic devices are strongly affected by the intrinsic spontaneous and piezoelectric polarization fields, which results in the low electron-hole recombination efficiency. One of the useful approaches for eliminating the piezoelectric polarization effects is to fabricate nitride-based devices along non-polar and semi-polar directions. Heterostructures grown on these orientations are receiving a lot of focus due to enhanced behaviour. In the present review article discussion has been carried out on the growth of III-nitride binary alloys and properties of GaN/Si, InN/Si, polar InN/GaN, and nonpolar InN/GaN heterostructures followed by studies on band offsets of III-nitride semiconductor heterostructures using the x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy technique. Current transport mechanisms of these heterostructures are also discussed.

Spirodiazaselenuranes are structurally interesting compounds and the stability of these compounds depends highly on the nature of the substituents attached to the nitrogen atoms. Aromatic substituents are known to play important roles in stabilizing the Se-N bonds in spiro compounds. In this study, several spirodiazaselenuranes are synthesized by introducing benzylic and aliphatic substituents to understand their effect on the stability of the Se-N bonds and the antioxidant activity. Replacement of phenyl substituent by benzyl/alkyl groups significantly reduces the stability of the spirodiazaselenuranes and slows down the oxidative cyclization process. The selenium centre in the spiro compounds undergoes further oxidation to produce the corresponding selenurane oxides, which are stable at room temperature. Comparison of the glutathione peroxidase (GPx) mimetic activity of the compounds showed that the diaryl selenides having heterocyclic rings are significantly more active due to the facile oxidation of the selenium centre. However, the activity is reduced significantly for compounds having aliphatic substituents. In addition to GPx activity, the compounds also inhibit peroxynitrite-mediated nitration and oxidation reaction of protein and small molecules, respectively. The experimental observations suggest that the antioxidant activity is increased considerably upon substitution of the aromatic group with the benzylic/aliphatic substituents on the nitrogen atoms.

Adsorption of a molecule or group with an atom which is less electronegative than oxygen (0) and directly interacting with the surface is very relevant to development of PtM (M = 3d-transition metal) catalysts with high activity. Here, we present theoretical analysis of the adsorption of NH3 molecule (N being less electronegative than 0) on (111) surfaces of PtM (Fe, Co, Ni) alloys using the first principles density functional approach. We find that, while NH3-Pt interaction is stronger than that of NH3 with the elemental M-surfaces, it is weaker than the strength of interaction of NH3 with M-site on the surface of PtM alloy. To overcome the difficulty in the DNS of compressible turbulence at high turbulent Mach number, a new difference scheme called GVC8 is developed. We have succeeded in the direct numerical simulation of decaying compressible turbulence up to turbulent Mach number 0.95. The statistical quantities thus obtained at lower turbulent Mach number agree well with those from previous authors with the same initial conditions, but they are limited to simulate at lower turbulent Mach numbers due to the so-called start-up problem. The energy spectrum and coherent structure of compressible turbulent flow are analysed. The scaling law of compressible turbulence is studied. The computed results indicate that the extended self-similarity holds in decaying compressible turbulence despite the occurrence of shocklets, and compressibility has little effects on relative scaling exponents when turbulent Mach number is not very high.

The spray of emulsified fuel, composed of diesel fuel, water and methanol can make micro-explosion under high temperature conditions, and the viscosity and the atomization characteristics of emulsion have significant effects on the micro- explosion of emulsions. To clarify the combustion mechanism of water-in-oil emulsion sprays, combustion bomb experiments were carried out, and the droplet group micro- explosions in W/O fuel emulsion sprays in a high-pressure, high-temperature bomb were observed clearly by a multi-pulsed, off-axis, image-plane ruby laser holocamera and continuously by a high-speed CCD camera. The viscosity and atomization characteristics of emulsions were also studied experimentally. The experimental results show that the higher concentration of the aqueous phase (water-methanol) (<50%) increases the viscosity of the emulsions, especially for higher agent concentration, and higher aqueous phase concentration and higher viscosity results in lager Sauter Mean Diameter (SMD). The experiment results also show that the different kinds of emulsifying agents, with different Hydrophile-Lipophile Balance (HLB) values, have significant influence on the viscosity of the emulsions.

We conduct experiments to investigate the effects of different majority requirements on bargaining outcomes in small and large groups. In particular, we use a Baron-Ferejohn protocol and investigate the effects of decision rules on delay (number of bargaining rounds needed to reach agreement) and measures of "fairness" (inclusiveness of coalitions, equality of the distribution within a coalition). We find that larger groups and unanimity rule are associated with significantly larger decision making costs in the sense that first round proposals more often fail, leading to more costly delay. The higher rate of failure under unanimity rule and in large groups is a combination of three facts: (1) in these conditions, a larger number of individuals must agree, (2) an important fraction of individuals reject offers below the equal share, and (3) proposers demand more (relative to the equal share) in large groups.
