In the last decades TiAlN coatings deposited by PVD techniques have been extensively investigated but, nowadays, their potential development for tribological applications is relatively low. However, new coatings are emerging based on them, trying to improve wear behavior. TiAlSiN thin coatings are now investigated, analyzing if Si introduction increases the wear resistance of PVD films. Attending to the application, several wear test configurations has been recently used by some researchers. In this work, TiAlSiN thin coatings were produced by PVD Unbalanced Magnetron Sputtering technique and they were conveniently characterized using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) provided with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), Electron Probe Micro-Analyzer (EPMA), Micro Hardness (MH) and Scratch Test Analysis. Properties as morphology, thickness, roughness, chemical composition and structure, hardness and film adhesion to the substrate were investigated. Concerning to wear characterization, two very different ways were chosen: micro-abrasion with ball-on-flat configuration and industrial non-standardized tests based on samples inserted in a feed channel of a selected plastic injection mould working with 30% (wt.) glass fiber reinforced polypropylene. TiAlSiN coatings with a small amount of about 5% (wt.) Si showed a similar wear behavior when compared with TiAlN reported performances, denoting that Si addition does not improve the wear performance of the TiAlN coatings in these wear test conditions.

The use of fiber reinforced plastics has increased in the last decades due to their unique properties. Advantages of their use are related with low weight, high strength and stiffness. Drilling of composite plates can be carried out in conventional machinery with some adaptations. However, the presence of typical defects like delamination can affect mechanical properties of produced parts. In this paper delamination influence in bearing stress of drilled hybrid carbon+glass/epoxy quasi-isotropic plates is studied by using image processing and analysis techniques. Results from bearing test show that damage minimization is an important mean to improve mechanical properties of the joint area of the plate. The appropriateness of the image processing and analysis techniques used in the measurement of the damaged area is demonstrated.

The aim of this study is to optimize the heat flow through the pultrusion die assembly system on the manufacturing process of a specific glass-fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) pultrusion profile. The control of heat flow and its distribution through whole die assembly system is of vital importance in optimizing the actual GFRP pultrusion process. Through mathematical modeling of heating-die process, by means of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) program, an optimum heater selection, die position and temperature control was achieved. The thermal environment within the die was critically modeled relative not only to the applied heat sources, but also to the conductive and convective losses, as well as the thermal contribution arising from the exothermic reaction of resin matrix as it cures or polymerizes from the liquid to solid condition. Numerical simulation was validated with basis on thermographic measurements carried out on key points along the die during pultrusion process.

In this work tubular fiber reinforced specimens are tested for fatigue life. The specimens are biaxially loaded with tension and shear stresses, with a load angle β of 30° and 60° and a load ratio of R=0,1. There are many factors that affect fatigue life of a fiber reinforced material and the main goal of this work is to study the effects of load ratio R by obtaining S-N curves and compare them to the previous works (1). All the other parameters, such as specimen production, fatigue loading frequency and temperature, will be the same as for the previous tests. For every specimen, stiffness, temperature of the specimen during testing, crack counting and final fracture mode are obtained. Prior to testing, a study if the literature regarding the load ratio effects on composites fatigue life and with that review estimate the initial stresses to be applied in testing. In previous works (1) similar specimens have only been tested for a load ratio of R=-1 and therefore the behaviour of this tubular specimens for a different load ratio is unknown. All the data acquired will be analysed and compared to the previous works, emphasizing the differences found and discussing the possible explanations for those differences. The crack counting software, developed at the institute, has shown useful before, however different adjustments to the software parameters lead to different cracks numbers for the same picture, and therefore a better methodology will be discussed to improve the crack counting results. After the specimen’s failure, all the data will be collected and stored and fibre volume content for every specimen is also determinate. The number of tests required to make the S-N curves are obtained according to the existent standards. Additionally are also identified some improvements to the testing machine setup and to the procedures for future testing.

O presente trabalho centra-se no estudo de um sistema de reforço de estruturas de betão armado que se tem tornado bastante utilizado, o reforço com materiais compósitos. Os materiais compósitos utilizados neste estudo são polímeros reforçados com fibras de carbono (CFRP – Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer). A ligação deste compósito aos elementos de betão é feita através de resina, neste caso utilizou-se resina epoxídica. Neste sistema de reforço é fulcral garantir que a ligação entre o compósito e o betão é a melhor possível e, por isso, no presente estudo estudou-se esta ligação através de ensaios experimentais de corte simples. Com o intuito de se perceber a influência do comprimento de laminado de CFRP colado ao substrato de betão, foram utilizados diferentes comprimentos colados nos ensaios experimentais. Utilizaram-se duas técnicas de reforço distintas, reforço com compósitos de CFRP colados exteriormente (EBR) e reforço com compósitos de CFRP colados numa ranhura feita no bloco de betão (NSM), com o intuito de se verificar a influência que a técnica de reforço pode ter na eficácia do sistema de reforço, percebendo para qual das técnicas se consegue obter uma melhor aderência entre o laminado de CFRP e o substrato de betão. Foram realizados 11 ensaios de corte simples para a técnica EBR e 8 ensaios de corte simples para a técnica NSM. Neste estudo foi também encontrada uma solução analítica que consegue descrever o comportamento completo da interface entre o material compósito e o substrato de betão. Esta solução analítica foi encontrada a partir de um modelo bond-slip não-linear. Os resultados experimentais obtidos foram analisados e o modelo analítico proposto foi validado com recurso a estudos presentes na literatura e aos resultados experimentais obtidos no presente estudo.

A necessidade de manutenção e reabilitação de estruturas de madeira antigas é, nos dias de hoje, um aspeto bastante importante a nível mundial. Assim, o estudo da eficácia de alguns sistemas de reforço torna-se fulcral. A presente dissertação é um estudo experimental sobre reforço de estruturas de madeira com materiais compósitos. Os materiais compósitos utilizados na componente experimental foram polímeros reforçados com fibras de carbono (CFRP – Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer) e estes foram colados ao substrato de madeira com resina epoxídica. O estudo experimental foi composto por duas fases. Na primeira fase realizaram-se ensaios de corte simples e na segunda fase ensaios de flexão. Os ensaios de corte simples foram realizados de modo a estudar a ligação CFRP-madeira e a analisar a influência do comprimento colado de CFRP ao substrato de madeira. Para tal, utilizaram-se duas técnicas de reforço, a técnica EBR (Externally Bonded Reinforcement) em que os laminados de CFRP são colados exteriormente e a técnica NSM (Near Surface Mounted) em que os laminados de CFRP são colados numa ranhura feita no provete de madeira. Foram realizados 17 ensaios de corte simples, 10 com a técnica EBR e 7 com a técnica NSM. Na segunda fase, foram realizados 3 ensaios de flexão sobre pavimentos de madeira reforçados com laminados de CFRP. Para estes ensaios também se utilizaram duas técnicas de reforço, a técnica EBR e uma técnica em que o laminado de FRP é ancorado nas extremidades das vigas. Numa fase final os resultados foram analisados e comparados de modo a tirar conclusões. Concluíu-se que a técnica de reforço NSM apresenta um desempenho superior à técnica EBR nos ensaios de corte simples. Comparativamente à técnica EBR, os pavimentos de madeira com o laminado de CFRP ancorado nas extremidades das vigas apresentaram um melhor desempenho.

O presente trabalho dedica-se à caracterização do comportamento de modelos de alvenaria reforçada com FRCM (fiber reinforced cementitious matrix) quando sujeitos a ações que atuam no plano da parede. O sistema de reforço, composto por uma camada de argamassa cimentícia reforçada com uma malha de CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced polymer), foi aplicado a modelos de alvenaria de tijolo furado. Considerando a importância da interface entre a camada de reforço e o substrato para a eficiência do sistema de reforço, procedeu-se à caracterização do comportamento mecânico da interface por intermédio de ensaios de corte direto, com os quais foi possível definir as superfícies de cedência e de rotura da interface. Os resultados obtidos permitiram a quantificação dos parâmetros que caracterizam a interface entre o material cerâmico e uma argamassa do tipo PFRM (polypropylene fibre reinforced mortar) quando sujeita a cargas de corte combinadas com cargas normais à interface. Através de expressões analíticas e do critério de rotura de Mohr-Coloumb foi analisada a adequação de um critério baseado numa aproximação linear, aos dados obtidos experimentalmente.

This paper presents the main features of finite element FE numerical model developed using the computer code FEMIX to predict the near-surface mounted NSM carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer CFRP rods shear repair contribution to corroded reinforced concrete RC beams. In the RC beams shear repaired with NSM technique, the Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) rods are placed inside pre-cut grooves onto the concrete cover of the RC beam’s lateral faces and are bonded to the concrete with high epoxy adhesive. Experimental and 3D numerical modelling results are presented in this paper in terms of load-deflection curves, and failure modes for 4 short corroded beams: two corroded beams (A1CL3-B and A1CL3-SB) and two control beams (A1T-B and A1T-SB), the beams noted with B were let repaired in bending only with NSM CFRP rods while the ones noted with SB were repaired in both bending and shear with NSM technique. The corrosion of the tensile steel bars and its effect on the shear capacity of the RC beams was discussed. Results showed that the FE model was able to capture the main aspects of the experimental load-deflection curves of the RC beams, moreover it has presented the experimental failure modes and FE numerical modelling crack patterns and both gave similar results for non-shear repaired beams which failed in diagonal tension mode of failure and for shear-repaired beams which failed due to large flexural crack at the middle of the beams along with the concrete crushing, three dimensional crack patterns were produced for shear-repaired beams in order to investigate the splitting cracks occurred at the middle of the beams and near the support.

Applying a certain prestress level to the carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) reinforcement according to either externally bonded reinforcing (EBR) or near surface mounted (NSM) techniques can mobilize the strengthening potentialities of this high tensile strength composite material. For the prediction of the flexural behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) structures strengthened with prestressed EBR or NSM CFRPs, however, simplified analytical and design formulations still need to be developed as a guidance for engineers to design this type of strengthened structures by hand calculation without any programming help. Hence, the current work aims to briefly explain a developed simplified analytical approach, with a design framework, to predict the flexural behavior of RC beams flexurally strengthened with either prestressed EBR or NSM CFRP reinforcements. Moreover, an upper limit for the prestress level is proposed in order to optimize the ductility performance of the NSM prestressing technique. The good predictive performance of the analytical approaches was appraised by simulating the results of experimental programs composed of RC beams strengthened with prestressed NSM CFRP reinforcements.

The objective of this paper is to propose a simplified analytical approach to predict the flexural behavior of simply supported reinforced-concrete (RC) beams flexurally strengthened with prestressed carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) reinforcements using either externally bonded reinforcing (EBR) or near surface mounted (NSM) techniques. This design methodology also considers the ultimate flexural capacity of NSM CFRP strengthened beams when concrete cover delamination is the governing failure mode. A moment–curvature (M–χ) relationship formed by three linear branches corresponding to the precracking, postcracking, and postyielding stages is established by considering the four critical M–χ points that characterize the flexural behavior of CFRP strengthened beams. Two additional M–χ points, namely, concrete decompression and steel decompression, are also defined to assess the initial effects of the prestress force applied by the FRP reinforcement. The mid-span deflection of the beams is predicted based on the curvature approach, assuming a linear curvature variation between the critical points along the beam length. The good predictive performance of the analytical model is appraised by simulating the force–deflection response registered in experimental programs composed of RC beams strengthened with prestressed NSM CFRP reinforcements.

This study presents an experimental program to assess the tensile strain distribution along prestressed carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) reinforcement flexurally applied on the tensile surface of RC beams according to near surface mounted (NSM) technique. Moreover, the current study aims to propose an analytical formulation, with a design framework, for the prediction of distribution of CFRP tensile strain and bond shear stress and, additionally, the prestress transfer length. After demonstration the good predictive performance of the proposed analytical approach, parametric studies were carried out to analytically evaluate the influence of the main material properties, and CFRP and groove cross section on the distribution of the CFRP tensile strain and bond shear stress, and on the prestress transfer length. The proposed analytical approach can also predict the evolution of the prestress transfer length during the curing time of the adhesive by considering the variation of its elasticity modulus during this period.

The bond behavior between Fiber Reinforced Polymers (FRPs) and masonry substrates has been the subject of many studies during the last years. Recent accelerated aging tests have shown that bond degradation and FRP delamination are likely to occur in FRP-strengthened masonry components under hygrothermal conditions. While an investigation on the possible methods to improve the durability of these systems is necessary, the applicability of different bond repair methods should also be studied. This paper aims at investigating the debonding mechanisms after repairing delaminated FRP-strengthened masonry components. FRP-strengthened brick specimens, after being delaminated, are repaired with two different adhesives: a conventional epoxy resin and a highly flexible polymer. The latter is used as an innovative adhesive in structural applications. The bond behavior in the repaired specimens is investigated by performing single-lap shear bond tests. Digital image correlation (DIC) is used for deeper investigation of the surface deformation and strains development. The effectiveness of the repair methods is discussed and compared with the strengthened specimens.

Recent durability studies have shown the susceptibility of bond in fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) strengthened masonry components to hygrothermal exposures. However, it is not clear how this local material degradation affects the global behavior of FRP-strengthened masonry structures. This study addresses this issue by numerically investigating the nonlinear behavior of FRP-masonry walls after aging in two different environmental conditions. A numerical modeling strategy is adopted and validated with existing experimental tests on FRP-strengthened masonry panels. The model, once validated, is used for modeling of four hypothetical FRP-strengthened masonry walls with different boundary conditions, strengthening schemes, and reinforcement ratios. The nonlinear behavior of the walls is then simulated before and after aging in two different environmental conditions. The degradation data are taken from previous accelerated aging tests. The changes in the failure mode and nonlinear response of the walls after aging are presented and discussed.
