This paper tests the extent to which four main factors that help define an organization’s information technology (IT) outsourcing configuration contribute to the quality of IT outsourcing relationships between clients and suppliers. It presents a research model that is tested using an analysis of substantive in-depth interviews with a total of 28 client and supplier managers in four pairs of client and supplier organizations. The findings suggest that a sound outsourcing configuration is important for the successful development of a quality relationship between parties. Thus, organizations seeking to increase their operational excellence and decrease the operational cost of IT outsourcing, and ultimately to improving the success of their IT outsourcing arrangements, must put more emphasis on, and take a more planned approach to, configuring their IT outsourcing arrangements.

The deficiencies in the design of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) systems that are reported in numerous published works consistently identify the optics assembly as the main problem in the miniaturization of SPR sensors for integration into biosensor systems. This paper presents a novel design of a grating coupled optical waveguide surface plasmon (SP) excitation mechanism, investigated with the intention of addressing the problems associated with using the traditional prism input-output light coupling approach. Computational multiphysics modeling and simulation of the design is carried out. The results are presented and discussed.

For fluid-filled closed cell composites widely distributed in nature, the configuration evolution and effective elastic properties are investigated using a micromechanical model and a multiscale homogenization theory, in which the effect of initial fluid pressure is considered. Based on the configuration evolution of the composite, we present a novel micromechanics model to examine the interactions between the initial fluid pressure and the macroscopic elasticity of the material. In this model, the initial fluid pressure of the closed cells and the corresponding configuration can be produced by applying an eigenstrain at the introduced fictitious stress-free configuration, and the pressure-induced initial microscopic strain is derived. Through a configuration analysis, we find the initial fluid pressure has a prominent effect on the effective elastic properties of freestanding materials containing pressurized fluid pores, and a new explicit expression of effective moduli is then given in terms of the initial fluid pressure. Meanwhile, the classical multiscale homogenization theory for calculating the effective moduli of a periodical heterogeneous material is generalized to include the pressurized fluid "inclusion" effect. Considering the coupling between matrix deformation and fluid pressure in closed cells, the multiscale homogenization method is utilized to numerically determine the macroscopic elastic properties of such composites at the unit cell level with specific boundary conditions. The present micromechanical model and multiscale homogenization method are illustrated by several numerical examples for validation purposes, and good agreements are achieved. The results show that the initial pressure of the fluid phase can strengthen overall effective bulk modulus but has no contribution to the shear modulus of fluid-filled closed cell composites.

We report the development of a stacked electrode supercapacitor cell using stainless steel meshes as the current collectors and optimised single walled nanotubes (SWNT)-microwave exfoliated graphene oxide (mw rGO) composites as the electrode material. The introduction of mw rGO into a SWNT matrix creates an intertwined porous structure that enhances the electroactive surface area and capacitive performance due to the 3-D hierarchical structure that is formed. The composite structure was optimised by varying the weight ratio of the SWNTs and mw rGO. The best performing ratio was the 90% SWNT-10% mw rGO electrode which achieved a specific capacitance of 306 F g-1 (3 electrode measurement calculated at 20 mV s-1). The 90% SWNT-10% mw rGO was then fabricated into a stacked electrode configuration (SEC) which significantly enhanced the electrode performance per volume (1.43 mW h cm-3, & 6.25 W cm-3). Device testing showed excellent switching capability up to 10 A g-1, and very good stability over 10000 cycles at 1.0 A g-1 with 93% capacity retention. © the Partner Organisations 2014.

In marine cartilaginous fish, reabsorption of filtered urea by the kidney is essential for retaining a large amount of urea in their body. However, the mechanism for urea reabsorption is poorly understood due to the complexity of the kidney. To address this problem, we focused on elephant fish (Callorhinchus milii) for which a genome database is available, and conducted molecular mapping of membrane transporters along the different segments of the nephron. Basically, the nephron architecture of elephant fish was similar to that described for elasmobranch nephrons, but some unique features were observed. The late distal tubule (LDT), which corresponded to the fourth loop of the nephron, ran straight near the renal corpuscle, while it was convoluted around the tip of the loop. The ascending and descending limbs of the straight portion were closely apposed to each other and were arranged in a countercurrent fashion. The convoluted portion of LDT was tightly packed and enveloped by the larger convolution of the second loop that originated from the same renal corpuscle. In situ hybridization analysis demonstrated that co-localization of Na(+),K(+),2Cl(-) cotransporter 2 and Na(+)/K(+)-ATPase α1 subunit was observed in the early distal tubule and the posterior part of LDT, indicating the existence of two separate diluting segments. The diluting segments most likely facilitate NaCl absorption and thereby water reabsorption to elevate urea concentration in the filtrate, and subsequently contribute to efficient urea reabsorption in the final segment of the nephron, the collecting tubule, where urea transporter-1 was intensely localized.

The Short-term Water Information and Forecasting Tools (SWIFT) is a suite of tools for flood and short-term streamflow forecasting, consisting of a collection of hydrologic model components and utilities. Catchments are modeled using conceptual subareas and a node-link structure for channel routing. The tools comprise modules for calibration, model state updating, output error correction, ensemble runs and data assimilation. Given the combinatorial nature of the modelling experiments and the sub-daily time steps typically used for simulations, the volume of model configurations and time series data is substantial and its management is not trivial. SWIFT is currently used mostly for research purposes but has also been used operationally, with intersecting but significantly different requirements. Early versions of SWIFT used mostly ad-hoc text files handled via Fortran code, with limited use of netCDF for time series data. The configuration and data handling modules have since been redesigned. The model configuration now follows a design where the data model is decoupled from the on-disk persistence mechanism. For research purposes the preferred on-disk format is JSON, to leverage numerous software libraries in a variety of languages, while retaining the legacy option of custom tab-separated text formats when it is a preferred access arrangement for the researcher. By decoupling data model and data persistence, it is much easier to interchangeably use for instance relational databases to provide stricter provenance and audit trail capabilities in an operational flood forecasting context. For the time series data, given the volume and required throughput, text based formats are usually inadequate. A schema derived from CF conventions has been designed to efficiently handle time series for SWIFT.

We exploit the possibility of new configurations in three-body halo nuclei, Samba type (the neutron-core form a bound system) as a doorway to Borromean systems. The nuclei Be-12, B-15, N-23 and F-27 are of such nature, in particular N-23 with a half-life of 37.7 s and a halo radius of 6.07 fm is an excellent example of Samba-halo configuration. The fusion below the barrier of the Samba halo nuclei with heavy targets could reveal the so far elusive enhancement and a dominance of one-neutron over two-neutron transfers, in contrast to what was found recently for the Borromean halo nucleus He-6 + U-238.

The resistivity of a field reversed configuration in a theta-pinch with slow rising current was investigated during the turbulent phase from the moment of field reversal until end of plasma radial implosion. This transport coefficient was obtained in a hydrogen plasma by local measurements with magnetic probe and compared to numerical calculations with Chodura resistivity and evolution of lower hybrid drift instability. The values of resistivity are higher than those predicted by classical binary collision. During early phase of confinement, the doubly layer structure of current sheath in the low electric field machine was theoretically well reproduced with anomalous collision frequency calculated with Chodura resistivity that provides appropriate conditions for onset of lower hybrid drift instability and the regular evolution of pinch. The plasma dynamic, radial profiles of magnetic field during the radial compression and resistivity values were equally close to those observed by the measurements.
