Cyanide Compounds

Chapter 4, “Cyanide Compounds,” illustrates an explosively developing research theme in which the cyanide ligand is used as a linking agent for the designed assembly of polynuclear metal complexes. Syntheses of several basic building blocks, such as K3[Cr(CN)6],Cr(Me3tacn)(CN)3,K4[Mo(CN)8],Na[W(CO)5CN],K[CpFe(CO)(CN)2],[NEt4][Cp*Rh(CN)3],[Fe4(bpy)8(μ-CN)4][PF6]4,. are given here. These units may be used in several ways to construct polynuclear compounds. One approach involves a hexacyanometalate core decorated with peripheral metal centers, e.g., [{Cu(tpa)(CN)}6Fe][ClO4]8. or [Cr{CNNi(tetren)}6][ClO4]9. An octacyanometalate unit can lead to higher nuclearity condensed compounds, as in [Co{Co(MeOH)3}8(μ-CN)30{Mo(CN)3}6]. Alternatively, a cluster core may be substituted with cyano complexes as ligands, as in [PPh4]2[Fe4S4{NCW(CO)5}4]. If there are two cis cyano ligands on the building block, then quadrilateral or square structures often result, as in {CpFe(CO(μ-CN)2Cu(PCy3)}2 and [Fe2Cu2(bpy)6(μ-CN)4][PF6]4 However, if there are three adjacent cyano ligands, then cubic cages may be constructed as in [(CpCo)4(Cp*Rh)4(μ-CN)12][PF6]4.

Organization of the Hox gene cluster in the grasshopper, Schistocerca gregaria

The conserved organization of the Hox genes throughout the animal kingdom has become one of the major paradigms of evolutionary developmental biology. We have examined the organization of the Hox genes of the grasshopper, Schistocerca gregaria. We find that the grasshopper Hox cluster is over 700 kb long, and is not split into equivalents of the Antennapedia complex and the bithorax complex of Drosophila melanogaster. SgDax and probably also Sgzen, the grasshopper homologues of fushi-tarazu (ftz) and Zerknüllt (zen), respectively, are also in the cluster, showing that the non-homeotic Antp-class genes, “accessory genes,” are an ancient feature of insect Hox clusters.

Interaction of the Hsp70 molecular chaperone, DnaK, with its cochaperone DnaJ

Chaperones of the Hsp70 family bind to unfolded or partially folded polypeptides to facilitate many cellular processes. ATP hydrolysis and substrate binding, the two key molecular activities of this chaperone, are modulated by the cochaperone DnaJ. By using both genetic and biochemical approaches, we provide evidence that DnaJ binds to at least two sites on the Escherichia coli Hsp70 family member DnaK: under the ATPase domain in a cleft between its two subdomains and at or near the pocket of substrate binding. The lower cleft of the ATPase domain is defined as a binding pocket for the J-domain because (i) a DnaK mutation located in this cleft (R167H) is an allele-specific suppressor of the binding defect of the DnaJ mutation, D35N and (ii) alanine substitution of two residues close to R167 in the crystal structure, N170A and T173A, significantly decrease DnaJ binding. A second binding determinant is likely to be in the substrate-binding domain because some DnaK mutations in the vicinity of the substrate-binding pocket are defective in either the affinity (G400D, G539D) or rate (D526N) of both peptide and DnaJ binding to DnaK. Binding of DnaJ may propagate conformational changes to the nearby ATPase catalytic center and substrate-binding sites as well as facilitate communication between these two domains to alter the molecular properties of Hsp70.

Blurring the lines : how Japanese American internment camps re-defined art and religion's relationship

After the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor during WWII, anyone of Japanese descent living on the West Coast was placed in internment camps scattered throughout the country. Life inside the camps included many different activities to make life as normal as possible. This study will focus on two intersecting day-to-day activities in particular, the practice of religion within the camps, as well as the creation of art. Art created in the camps was influenced by multiple religious traditions. An analysis of artworks created by professional and amateur artists, interviews and an examination of existing scholarship demonstrates that internment camps created a unique environment for the creation of art. The values of internees reflected the seamless coexistence of Christianity, Buddhism and Shinto in internment camp art.
