This study investigates the sedimentological and geochemical changes that occurred during the last 2200 years in the meromictic Lake Lucerne (Switzerland), one of the largest freshwater lakes of Central Europe. The stable isotope composition (delta C-13 and delta O-18 values) of bulk carbonates is compared to changes in grain-size distribution (clay and silt fraction), natural trace element input (titanium and thorium concentrations), and organic material abundance (C-org, nitrogen and phosphorus) and composition (C/N ratios and hydrogen and oxygen indexes). A drop in carbonate accumulation and in the delta O-18 values of sediments between ca. AD 500 and 700 followed a large and consistent rise in chemical weathering, marked by increases in the silicate-clay fraction and in crustal element concentrations. During the following millennium, there was a long-term decreasing trend in the lithogenic trace element input and in the phosphorus loading, suggesting decreasing terrigeneous input from runoff water. The major sedimentological change over the studied period occurred after ca. AD 1800 with a significant increase in the erosion-driven silt-fraction and in the sedimentation rate. During the last century, human-induced increase in nutrient input to the lake highly enhanced the accumulation of organic matter in sediment. Changes in nutrients and oxygen conditions in the hypolimnion of Lake Lucerne during the eutrophication period (i.e., the last 40 years) highly modified the geochemical fluxes compared to the relatively stable oligotrophic conditions that prevailed during the previous 2000 years. Before the 19th century, climate driven meromixis had a limited impact on the organic matter flux to the sediments, but the accumulation of carbonate considerably decreased during periods of lower mechanical erosion rates and high chemical weathering rates. The Diagnosis and Recommendation System (DRIS) was applied to eucalypt trees (hybrids of Eucalyptus grandis x E. urophylla) with different ages and growing under different environmental conditions for three different clones. The basic data were obtained from 1,986 trees of commercial stands cultivated in the states of Espírito Santo and south Bahia, Brazil. The DRIS indices were calculated using the Beaufils' Range formula and grouped according to the Nutrient Application Potential Response method. The objective of this paper was to evaluate the N, P and Ca status in eucalypt trees, regarding the tree ages and genetic materials. The DRIS indices discriminated differences in the nutritional status of the trees, both in relation to age and the genetic materials (clones). The results indicated that the deficiency of N and Ca tended to decrease with tree age, whereas the P deficiency tended to increase. Furthermore, of the three evaluated clones, those numbered 00014 and 00034 showed opposite trends regarding to N, P, and Ca nutrition, and the clone numbered 00021, in general, presented the highest degree of unbalanced nutrition of N, P and Ca.

Sarcoidosis is a systemic granulomatous disorder of unknown origin commonly affecting the lung, the lymphoid system and the skin. We report here two cases of cutaneous sarcoidosis in two former intravenous drug users following interferon (IFN)-α and ribavirin therapy for chronic hepatitis C. Both patients developed skin sarcoidosis along venous drainage lines of both forearms, coinciding with the areas of prior drug injections. The unique distribution of the skin lesions suggests that tissue damage induced by repeated percutaneous drug injections represents a trigger for the local skin manifestation of sarcoidosis. Interestingly, skin damage was recently found to induce the local expression IFN-α, a well-known trigger of sarcoidosis in predisposed individuals. Here we review the literature on sarcoidosis elicited in the context of IFN-α therapy and propose a new link between the endogenous expression of IFN-α and the induction of disease manifestations in injured skin. © 2013 S. Seven experimental texture sections were constructed on the Polk-Jasper RP-163-1(50)--16--77 project just east of Des Moines. The experimental sections included two groove depths for a longitudinal tine texture and 13 mm (1/2 in.), 19 mm (1 in.) and variable spaced transverse tine textures. An artificial turf textured section was also included. Friction values and a rating of objectionable noise were determined for all sections. All transverse tine textures generated a high level of objectionable noise. The longitudinal tine texture was rated very good in regard to objectionable noise. At this time, all tined textures are providing satisfactory friction values.

Many times during the past four years we have seen ranges in the durability factor for a single coarse aggregate source that were too great to be explained by variations in the coarse aggregate alone. The durability test (ASTM C 666 Method B) as presently used is a test of the concrete system rather than that of a particular coarse aggregate. An informal study of current durability factor data indicates that w/c ratio and/or percentage of air may be critical to beam growth and durability factor. The purpose of this project, R-258, is to determine the extent w/c ratio and air content variations have on beam growth and durability factor when other factors including coarse aggregate gradation are held constant.

PURPOSE: To analyze available evidence on the incidence of anatomical variations or disease of the maxillary sinuses as identified by cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) in dentistry. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A focused question was developed to search the electronic databases MEDLINE, EMBASE, the Cochrane Oral Health Group Trials Register, and CENTRAL and identify all relevant papers published between 1980 and January 19, 2013. Unpublished literature at ClinicalTrials.gov, in the National Research Register, and in the Pro-Quest Dissertation Abstracts and Thesis database was also included. Studies were included irrespective of language. These results were supplemented by hand and gray literature searches. RESULTS: Twenty-two studies were identified. Twenty were retrospective cohort studies, one was a prospective cohort study, and one was a case control study. The main indication for CBCT was dental implant treatment planning, and the majority of studies used a small field of view for imaging. The most common anatomical variations included increased thickness of the sinus membrane, the presence of sinus septa, and pneumatization. Reported sinus disease frequency varied widely, ranging from 14.3% to 82%. There was a wide range in the reported prevalence of mucosal thickening related to apical pathology, the degree of lumenal opacification, features of sinusitis, and the presence of retention cysts and polyps. More pathologic findings in the maxillary sinus were reported in men than in women, and the medial wall and sinus floor were most frequently affected. CONCLUSION: CBCT is used primarily to evaluate bony anatomy and to screen for overt pathology of the maxillary sinuses prior to dental implant treatment. Differences in the classification of mucosal findings are problematic in the consistent and valid assessment of health and disease of the maxillary sinus.

Purpose: To work out certain, well‑defined aetiologies frequently associated with mesenteric venous thrombosis (MVT) in order to predict a typical population at risk, since MVT is nowadays often incidentally detected on cross‑sectional imaging. To demonstrate the MDCT features, frequency and extent of associated bowel ischemia according to the underlying pathology. Methods and Materials: Our electronic database revealed 71 patients (25 women, mean age 55) with thrombosis of the superior and/or inferior mesenteric vein detected by MDCT between 2000 and 2008. Two radiologists jointly reviewed the corresponding MDCT features including intraluminal extension, underlying aetiology and associated bowel ischemia, if present. Results: MVT was associated with carcinoma in 31 (43.7%) patients (pancreas 21.1%, liver 9.9%, others 12.7%). Concomitant inflammation was seen in 15 (21.1%) patients (pancreatitis 11.3%, diverticulitis 4.2%, others 5.6%), whereas coagulation/hematologic disorders were found in 7 (9.9%) patients, liver cirrhosis in 6 (8.5%), mixed/miscellaneous causes in 5 (7%) and still unknown aetiologies in 5 patients (7%). MVT resulted from recent operations in 2 (2.8%) patients. MDCT features of venous bowel ischemia were present in 15 patients (21.1%). 46.5% of MVT were (sub)acute, while 53.5% chronic. The luminal extension was complete in 52.1%, subtotal (50% of lumen) in 22.5% and partial (50% of lumen) in 25.4% of patients, consisting either of blood clots (76.1%) or tumoral tissue (23.9%), the latter mainly due to pancreas adenocarcinoma (76.4%). Conclusion: MDCT features of MVT are seen with a wide range of underlying diseases. Signs of intestinal ischemia are infrequently associated, mostly occurring with coagulation/hematologic disorders (40%).

OBJECTIVES: We report a new salvage technique for treating venous aneurysms (VAs) complicating vascular access arteriovenous fistula (AVF) using externally reinforced venous aneurysmorrhaphy. DESIGN: A retrospective study over a 20-month period from a single centre. PATIENTS: Patients presenting to the vascular surgery department, Bordeaux University Hospital for revision of a vascular access AVF were included. METHODS: Reinforced venous aneurysmorrhaphy consisted in removal of redundant vessel wall followed by reinforcement using an external prosthetic graft. Patency, diameter and flow were assessed by duplex ultrasound at 1, 6 and 12 months after salvage. RESULTS: Thirty-eight eligible patients were identified. Five were excluded because VA was associated with central vein stenosis; the remaining 33 underwent salvage. Indications were rapidly expanding or painful VA in seven cases; VA with frequent bleeding or damaged overlying skin in eight; VA in close relation to a stenosis in two; and VA associated with high-flow rate in 16. Cannulation was attempted after 30 days. Mean follow-up time was 12 S.D. 5 months (range: 4-22). Two repaired AVFs failed. Primary 1-year patency was 93%. No aneurysm or infection occurred. Reduction of high flow was successful in 12 of 16 patients. The remaining four required re-operation. CONCLUSIONS: Reinforced venous aneurysmorrhaphy is effective in controlling venous dilation and achieving patency. Reduction of high-flow rates was not always achieved. Further study is needed to evaluate long-term efficacy of this treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with arterial disease receiving antiplatelet agents may develop venous thromboembolism (VTE) and need anticoagulant therapy, although concomitant use of these drugs may increase bleeding risk. We analyzed RIETE data and compared clinical outcomes depending on decision to discontinue or maintain antiplatelet therapy at VTE diagnosis. METHODS: Consecutive patients with acute VTE were enrolled in RIETE. Only patients receiving antiplatelet therapy at baseline were included in this analysis. Primary outcomes were: rate of subsequent ischemic events, major bleeding or death during anticoagulation course. RESULTS: 1178 patients who received antiplatelet drugs at VTE diagnosis were included. Antiplatelet therapy was discontinued in 62% of patients. During anticoagulation course, patients also receiving antiplatelet therapy had higher rates of lower limb amputations (2.28 vs. 0.21 events per 100 patients-years; p<0.01), any ischemic events (5.7 vs. 2.28 events per 100 patients-years; p<0.05) or death (23.6 vs. 13.9 deaths per 100 patients-years; p<0.01). No differences in the rate of major bleeding or recurrent VTE were revealed. In matched analysis, patients on antiplatelet therapy were found to have a significantly higher rate of limb amputations (odds ratio: 15.3; 95% CI: 1.02-229) and an increased number of composite outcomes including all-cause deaths, arterial and VTE events (odds ratio: 1.46; CI: 1.03-2.06), with no differences in major bleeding rate. CONCLUSION: Concomitant anticoagulant and antiplatelet therapy in patients with VTE and arterial disease is not associated with increased risk for bleeding, recurrent VTE or death. The worse outcome observed in patients who continued antiplatelet therapy requires further investigations.

Venous symptoms and quality of life (QOL) of 78 patients (54 women, mean age 49,5±13,3 years) with primary superficial venous insufficiency (PSVI) were compared at one year after treatment with crossectomy and stripping (C/S, 56 patients) or endovenous laser ablation (EVLA, 22 patients) using the VEINES-QOL questionnaire. Both treatments significantly (p<0,001) improved the scores for venous symptoms (difference 10,6±9,9 and 9,9±8,2 score points for C/S and EVLA, respectively) and QOL (difference 10,3±8,7 and 8,4±6,6 score points for C/S and EVLA, respectively). No difference was found between treatments regarding symptoms or QOL improvement (p=0,30). We conclude that C/S and EVLA are equally effective in improving symptoms and QOL in PSVI.

BACKGROUND: Oculopalatal tremor (OPT) is a delayed complication of a brainstem lesion, characterized by involuntary contractions of the soft palate associated with a synchronized ocular pendular nystagmus. MRI reveals inferior olivary nucleus hypersignal/hypertrophy (IONH). Our objective was to refine the clinical profile of patients with OPT and to report a few oddities in both presentation and evolution. METHODS: We performed a retrospective study of patients diagnosed with OPT and a literature search. RESULTS: From our database, we retrieved 5 men and 3 women with a diagnosis of OPT. Eighty-two patients with OPT were retrieved from the literature and were compiled with our series. The average age was 54 years and there was a male predominance. Brainstem vascular lesion was the most common etiology (80%). Prominent vertical pendular nystagmus was found in 90%. Dissociated nystagmus was mostly associated to unilateral contralateral IONH on MRI, while bilateral symmetrical nystagmus was due to a bilateral IONH in the majority of cases. Three oddities were found amongst our 8 patients: prominent nystagmus ipsilateral to IONH; disappearance of IONH on MRI despite persisting nystagmus, and asymptomatic OPT. CONCLUSION: The clinical profile of OPT is rather stereotyped. Rarely do patients deviate from the classical description of OPT.

Fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) allows the user to investigate interactions between fluorescent partners. One crucial issue when calculating sensitized emission FRET is the correction for spectral bleed-throughs (SBTs), which requires to calculate the ratios between the intensities in the FRET and in the donor or acceptor settings, when only the donor or acceptor are present. Theoretically, SBT ratios should be constant. However, experimentally, these ratios can vary as a function of fluorophore intensity, and assuming constant values may hinder precise FRET calculation. One possible cause for such a variation is the use of a microscope set-up with different photomultipliers for the donor and FRET channels, a set-up allowing higher speed acquisitions on very dynamic fluorescent molecules in living cells. Herein, we show that the bias introduced by the differential response of the two PMTs can be circumvented by a simple modeling of the SBT ratios as a function of fluorophore intensity. Another important issue when performing FRET is the localization of FRET within the cell or a population of cells. We hence developed a freely available ImageJ plug-in, called PixFRET, that allows a simple and rapid determination of SBT parameters and the display of normalized FRET images. The usefulness of this modeling and of the plug-in are exemplified by the study of FRET in a system where two interacting nuclear receptors labeled with ECFP and EYFP are coexpressed in living cells.

Context:Loss-of-function mutations in PROK2 and PROKR2 have been implicated in Kallmann syndrome (KS), characterized by hypogonadotropic hypogonadism and anosmia. Recent data suggest overlapping phenotypes/genotypes between KS and congenital hypopituitarism (CH), including septo-optic dysplasia (SOD).Objective:We screened a cohort of patients with complex forms of CH (n = 422) for mutations in PROK2 and PROKR2.Results:We detected 5 PROKR2 variants in 11 patients with SOD/CH: novel p.G371R and previously reported p.A51T, p.R85L, p.L173R, and p.R268C-the latter 3 being known functionally deleterious variants. Surprisingly, 1 patient with SOD was heterozygous for the p.L173R variant, whereas his phenotypically unaffected mother was homozygous for the variant. We sought to clarify the role of PROKR2 in hypothalamopituitary development through analysis of Prokr2(-/-) mice. Interestingly, these revealed predominantly normal hypothalamopituitary development and terminal cell differentiation, with the exception of reduced LH; this was inconsistent with patient phenotypes and more analogous to the healthy mother, although she did not have KS, unlike the Prokr2(-/-) mice. Conclusions:The role of PROKR2 in the etiology of CH, SOD, and KS is uncertain, as demonstrated by no clear phenotype-genotype correlation; loss-of-function variants in heterozygosity or homozygosity can be associated with these disorders. However, we report a phenotypically normal parent, homozygous for p.L173R. Our data suggest that the variants identified herein are unlikely to be implicated in isolation in these disorders; other genetic or environmental modifiers may also impact on the etiology. Given the phenotypic variability, genetic counseling may presently be inappropriate.
