PtRu/Ti anodes with varying Pt : Ru ratio were prepared by electrodeposition of a thin PtRu catalyst layer onto Ti mesh for a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). The morphology and structure of the catalyst layers were analyzed by SEM, EDX and XRD. The catalyst coating layer shows an alloy character. The relative activities of the PtRu/Ti electrodes were assessed and compared in half cell and single DMFC experiments. The results show that these electrodes are very active for the methanol oxidation and that the optimum Ru surface coverage was ca. 9 at.% for DMFC operating at 20°C and 11 at.% at 60°C. The PtRu/Ti anode shows a performance comparable to that of the conventional carbon-based anode in a DMFC operating with 0.25 M or 0.5 M methanol solution and atmosphere oxygen gas at 90°C. © the Owner Societies 2006.

A novel anode structure based on Ti mesh for the direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) has been prepared by thermal deposition of ~5 µm PtRuO2 catalyst layer on ~50 µm Ti mesh. The preparation procedures and the main characteristics of the anode were studied by half-cell testing, scanning electron microscopy analysis, energy-dispersive X-ray measurement, and single-cell testing. The optimum calcination temperature is 450°C, calcination time is 90- 120 min, PtRuO2 catalyst loading is 5.0 mg cm-2, Pt precursor concentration range of solution is 0.14- 0.4 M, and solution aging time is 1 day. The performances of the anodes prepared using the solution kept within 20 days showed no significant difference. When it was used in DMFC feed with low-concentration methanol solution at 90°C, this new anode shows better performance than that of the conventional anode, because its thin hydrophilic structure is a benefit to the transport of methanol and carbon dioxide. However, due to its opening structure, when higher concentration methanol was employed, the performance of the cell with new anode became worse. © 2006 The Electrochemical Society. An anode structure based on Ti mesh has been developed for the direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). This new anode was prepared by electrochemical deposition of a ~ 3 µ m PtRu catalyst layer on ~ 50 µ m Ti mesh. It has a thinner structure compared to that of a porous carbon-based conventional anode. The Ti mesh anode shows a performance comparable to, and exceeding that, of the conventional anode in a DMFC operating with 0.25 or 0.5 M methanol solution and atmosphere oxygen at 90 C. However, it shows a lower performance of the cell when higher concentrations of methanol was employed. This may be attributed to its thin and open structure, which could facilitate the transport of methanol from the flow field to the anode catalyst layer and carbon dioxide in the opposite direction. © 2006 International Association for Hydrogen Energy.

The present thesis outlines the preparation of a 7-membered guanidine. Initial efforts to obtain this guanidine via 2-chloro-1,3-dimethylimidazolinium chloride induced ring forming chemistry failed to provide the target in a reproducible fashion. Changing strategies, we were able to obtain the desired guanidine through CuCl mediated amination of a 7-membered thiourea intermediate to arrive at the target. In addition, the catalytic activity of this compound was evaluated in a vinylogous aldol reaction of dibromofuranone and four aromatic aldehydes to generate chiral γ-butenolides with modest to good enantiomeric excess. It was found that electron-poor aldehydes resulted in higher, 81% ee, whereas electron rich aldehydes led to low, 41% ee, levels of enantiomeric excess.

Model catalysts of Pd nanoparticles and films on TiO2 (I 10) were fabricated by metal vapour deposition (MVD). Molecular beam measurements show that the particles are active for CO adsorption, with a global sticking probability of 0.25, but that they are deactivated by annealing above 600 K, an effect indicative of SMSI. The Pd nanoparticles are single crystals oriented with their (I 11) plane parallel to the surface plane of the titania. Analysis of the surface by atomic resolution STM shows that new structures have formed at the surface of the Pd nanoparticles and films after annealing above 800 K. There are only two structures, a zigzag arrangement and a much more complex "pinwheel" structure. The former has a unit cell containing 7 atoms, and the latter is a bigger unit cell containing 25 atoms. These new structures are due to an overlayer of titania that has appeared on the surface of the Pd nanoparticles after annealing, and it is proposed that the surface layer that causes the SMSI effect is a mixed alloy of Pd and Ti, with only two discrete ratios of atoms: Pd/Ti of 1: 1 (pinwheel) and 1:2 (zigzag). We propose that it is these structures that cause the SMSI effect. (c) 2005 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

This paper is concerned with the effects of adding tin and/or titanium dopant to sodium aluminium hydride for both dehydrogenation and re-hydrogenation reactions during their reversible storage of molecular hydrogen. Temperature programmed decomposition (TPD) measurements show that the dehydrogenation kinetics of NaAlH4 are significantly enhanced upon doping the material with 2 mol% of tributyltin hydride, Sn(Bu)(3)H but the tin catalyst dopant is shown to be inferior than titanium. On the other hand, in this preliminary work, a significant synergetic catalytic effect is clearly revealed in material co-doped with both titanium and tin catalysts which shows the highest reversible rates of dehydrogenation and re-hydrogenation (after their hydrogen depletion). The re-hydrogenation rates of depleted Sn/Ti/NaAlH4 evaluated at both 9.5 and 140 bars hydrogen are also found to be favourable compared to the Ti/NaAlH4, which clearly suggest the importance of the catalyst choice. Basing on these results some mechanistic insights for the catalytic reversible dehydrogenation and re-hydrogenation processes of Sn/Ti/NaAlH4 are therefore made. (C) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. There has been limited development in catalyst carriers for magnetic separations where superparamagnetic nanoparticles of a high saturation magnetization with no coercivity are required to isolate expensive catalyst reagent that are subjected to repeated magnetic cycles. By using simple stepwise layer-by-layer nanochemistry techniques, we show that an fee FePt nanomagnet can be created inside each silica particle with tailored dimensions to great precision. Subsequent engineering of the external surface with Ti-O-Si species in an optimum structure to create a unique interface gives high activity and excellent selectivity of the composite material for the trans-stilbene oxidation to the corresponding epoxide in the presence of tert-butyl hydroperoxide. Thus, a new magnetic separable epoxidation catalyst is described. This work clearly demonstrates the significance of nanoengineering of a single catalyst particle by a bottom-up construction approach in modern catalyst design, which could lead to new catalytic. properties.

The non-ohmic and dielectric properties as well as the dependence on the microstructural features of CaCu(3)Ti(4)O(12)/CaTiO(3) ceramic composites obtained by conventional and microwave sintering were investigated. It was demonstrated that the non-ohmic and dielectric properties depend strongly on the sintering conditions. It was found that the non-linear coefficient reaches values of 65 for microwave-sintered samples and 42 for samples sintered in a conventional furnace when a current density interval of 1-10 mA cm(-2) is considered. The non-linear coefficient value of 65 is equivalent to 1500 for samples sintered in the microwave if a current interval of 5-30 mA is considered as is shortly discussed by Chung et al (2004 Nature Mater. 3 774). Due to a high non-linear coefficient and a low leakage current (90 mu A) under both processing conditions, these samples are promising for varistor applications. The conventionally sintered samples exhibit a higher relative dielectric constant at 1 kHz (2960) compared with the samples sintered in the microwave furnace (2100). At high frequencies, the dielectric constant is also larger in the samples sintered in the conventional furnace. Depending on the application, one or another synthesis methodology is recommended, that is, for varistor applications sintered in a microwave furnace and for dielectric application sintered in a conventional furnace.

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), x-ray diffraction (XRD), and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) techniques have been applied to characterize the surface composition and structure of a series of CuO-TiO2-CeO2 catalysts. For a small loading of cerium, ceria was mainly dispersed on the titania surface and a minor amount of CeO2 crystallite appeared. At higher loading of cerium, the CeO2 phase increased and the atomic Ce/Ti ratio values were smaller than the nominal composition, as a consequence of cerium agglomeration. This result suggests that only a fraction of cerium can be spread on the titania surface. For titanium-based mixed oxide, we observed that cerium is found as Ce3+ uniquely on the surface. The atomic Cu/(Ce+Ti) ratio values showed no influence from cerium concentration on the dispersion of copper, although the copper on the surface was shown to be dependent on the cerium species. For samples with a high amount of cerium, XPS analysis indicated the raise of second titanium species due cerium with spin-orbit components at higher binding energies than those presented by Ti4+ in a tetragonal structure. The structural results obtained by XAS are consistent with those obtained by XRD and XPS. (C) 2001 American Vacuum Society.

Titanium oxide is a good candidate as new support for hydrotreating (HDT) catalysts, but has the inconvenience of presenting small surface area and poor thermal stability. To overcome these handicaps TiO2-Al2O3 mixed oxides were proposed as catalyst support. Here, the results concerning the preparation, characterization and testing of molybdenum catalyst supported on titania-alumina are presented. The support was prepared by sol-gel route using titanium and aluminum isopropoxides, chelated with acetylacetone (acac) to promote similar hydrolysis ratio for both the alcoxides. The effect of nominal complexing ratios [acac]/[Ti] and of sol aging temperature on the structural features of nanometric particles was analyzed by quasi-elastic light scattering (QELS) and N-2 adsorption isotherm measurements. These characterizations have shown that the addition of acac and the increase of aging temperature favor the full dispersion of primary nanoparticles in mother acid solution. The dried powder presents a monomodal distribution of slit-shaped micropores, formed by irregular packing of platelet primary particles, surface area superior to 200 m(2) g(-1) and mean pore size of about 1 nm. These characteristics of porous texture are preserved after firing at 673 K. The diffraction patterns of sample fired above 973 K show only the presence of anatase crystalline phase. The crystalline structure of the support remained unaltered after molybdenum adsorption, but the surface area and the micropore volume were drastically reduced. (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier B.V. Titanium oxide (TiO2) is a good candidate for support of hydrotreating catalysts but has the disadvantage of presenting a low surface area and a poor thermal stability when compared with Al2O3. A mixed TiO2-Al2O3 support was proposed as an alternative that is expected to be free from these drawbacks. The variation during firing of the nanoporous texture of supports composed of TiO2-Al2O3, TiO2 and Al2O3 was studied by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The supports were prepared by the sol-gel route using Ti and Al isopropoxides. We have particularly analyzed the effects of acid and basic hydrolysis on the nanostructural features of catalyst supports fired at different temperatures. The nanopore radius distribution functions were determined from SAXS results assuming a simple model of spherical nanopores embedded in a homogeneous solid matrix. The modal pore radius in both pure TiO2 and pure Al2O3 supports grows from 1.3 to 2.2 nm as the firing temperature increases from 673 to 973 K. on the other hand, the modal pore radius in the mixed TiO2-Al2O3 support remains below 1.2 nm over the same range of firing temperatures. These results demonstrate the good thermal stability of the nanoporous texture of mixed TiO2-Al2O3 supports.
