Enantioselective catalytic lithiation using a chiral binaphthyl derivative as electron carrier

The lithiation, of the secondary chloride 2, catalyzed by binaphthyl derivatives, i.e. BINAM 4, BINOL 5, BINAP 6, H8-BINAP 7, Tol-BINAP 8, 2,2’-bis(pyrrolidin-1-yl)-1,1’-binaphthalene 9, and 2,2’-dimethyl-1,1’-binaphthalene 11, in the presence of different ketones has been studied, yielding the corresponding alcohol derivatives 3 and 12-16 in moderate to good yields. Binaphthyl derivative 11 has revealed to be very active as catalyst in the lithiation process at room temperature, and has allowed the preparation of the alcohol derivatives with enantioselectivities up to 50%.

Developing pre-service teachers’ noticing of students’ understanding of the derivative concept

This research study examines the development of the ability of pre-service teachers to notice signs of students’ understanding of the derivative concept. It analyses preservice teachers’ interpretations of written solutions to problems involving the derivative concept before and after participating in a teacher training module. The results indicate that the development of this skill is linked to pre-service teachers’ progressive understanding of the mathematical elements that students use to solve problems. We have used these results to make some suggestions for teacher training programmes.

Students’ understanding of the function-derivative relationship when learning economic concepts

The aim of this study is to characterise students’ understanding of the function-derivative relationship when learning economic concepts. To this end, we use a fuzzy metric (Chang 1968) to identify the development of economic concept understanding that is defined by the function-derivative relationship. The results indicate that the understanding of these economic concepts is linked to students’ capacity to perform conversions and treatments between the algebraic and graphic registers of the function-derivative relationship when extracting the economic meaning of concavity/convexity in graphs of functions using the second derivative.

Automated Analysis of the Auditory Brainstem Response Using Derivative Estimation Wavelets

In this paper, we describe an algorithm that automatically detects and labels peaks I - VII of the normal, suprathreshold auditory brainstem response (ABR). The algorithm proceeds in three stages, with the option of a fourth: ( 1) all candidate peaks and troughs in the ABR waveform are identified using zero crossings of the first derivative, ( 2) peaks I - VII are identified from these candidate peaks based on their latency and morphology, ( 3) if required, peaks II and IV are identified as points of inflection using zero crossings of the second derivative and ( 4) interpeak troughs are identified before peak latencies and amplitudes are measured. The performance of the algorithm was estimated on a set of 240 normal ABR waveforms recorded using a stimulus intensity of 90 dBnHL. When compared to an expert audiologist, the algorithm correctly identified the major ABR peaks ( I, III and V) in 96 - 98% of the waveforms and the minor ABR peaks ( II, IV, VI and VII) in 45 - 83% of waveforms. Whilst peak II was correctly identified in only 83% and peak IV in 77% of waveforms, it was shown that 5% of the peak II identifications and 31% of the peak IV identifications came as a direct result of allowing these peaks to be found as points of inflection. Self-condensation of a thiazole-peptide bearing a 21-membered loop into a library of giant macrocycles with multiple orthogonal loops

Tetrapeptide analogue H-[Glu-Ser-Lys(Thz)]-OH, containing a turn-inducing thiazole constraint, was used as a template to produce a 21-membered structurally characterized loop by linking Glu and Lys side chains with a Val-Ile dipeptide. This template was oligomerized in one pot to a library (cyclo-[1](n), n = 2-10) of giant symmetrical macrocycles (up to 120-membered rings), fused to 2-10 appended loops that were carried intact through multiple oligomerization (chain extension) and cyclization (chain terminating) reactions of the template. A three-dimensional solution structure for cyclo-[1](3) shows all three appended loops projecting from the same face of the macrocycle. This is a promising approach to separating pepticle motifs over large distances.
