Objectives: To conduct a controlled study contrasting titanium surface topography after procedures that simulated 10 years of brushing using toothpastes with or without fluoride. Methods: Commercially pure titanium (cp Ti) and Ti-6Al-4V disks (6 mm circle divide x 4 mm) were mirror-polished and treated according to 6 groups (n = 6) as a function of immersion (I) or brushing (B) using deionised water (W), fluoride-free toothpaste (T) and fluoride toothpaste (FT). Surface topography was evaluated at baseline (pretreatment) and post-treatment, using atomic force microscope in order to obtain three-dimensional images and mean roughness. Specimens submitted to immersion were submerged in the vehicles without brushing. For brushed specimens, procedures were conducted using a linear brushing machine with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Immersion and brushing were performed for 244 h. IFT and BFT samples were analysed under scanning electron microscope with Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS). Pre and post-treatment values were compared using the paired Student T-test (alpha = .05). Intergroup comparisons were conducted using one-way ANOVA with Tukey post-test (alpha = .05). Results: cp Ti mean roughness (in nanometers) comparing pre and post-treatment were: IW, 2.29 +/- 0.55/2.33 +/- 0.17; IT, 2.24 +/- 0.46/2.02 +/- 0.38; IFT, 2.22 +/- 0.53/1.95 +/- 0.36; BW, 2.22 +/- 0.42/3.76 +/- 0.45; BT, 2.27 +/- 0.55/16.05 +/- 3.25; BFT, 2.27 +/- 0.51/22.39 +/- 5.07. Mean roughness (in nanometers) measured in Ti-6Al-4V disks (pre/post-treatment) were: IW, 1.79 +/- 0.25/2.01 +/- 0.25; IT, 1.61 +/- 0.13/1.74 +/- 0.19; IFT, 1.92 +/- 0.39/2.29 +/- 0.51; BW, 2.00 +/- 0.71/2.05 +/- 0.43; BT, 2.37 +/- 0.86/11.17 +/- 2.29; BFT, 1.83 +/- 0.50/15.73 +/- 1.78. No significant differences were seen after immersions (p > .05). Brushing increased the roughness of cp Ti and of Ti-6Al-4V (p < .01); cp Ti had topographic changes after BW, BT and BFT treatments whilst Ti-6Al-4V was significantly different only after BT and BTF. EDS has not detected fluoride or sodium ions on metal surfaces. Conclusions: Exposure to toothpastes (immersion) does not affect titanium per se; their use during brushing affects titanium topography and roughness. The associated effects of toothpaste abrasives and fluorides seem to increase roughness on titanium brushed surfaces. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In this work, we present an investigation on the thickness of the eroded enamel layer in tooth samples after exposure to citric and hydrochloric acid by using Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy (SECM). Approaching curves with typical negative feedback behavior were obtained in enamel samples for evaluation of topographic changes. In a control experiment, SECM images showed no significant difference in the current monitored during the scan, implying that enamel demineralization did not occur in mineral water medium. Topographic SECM images obtained after contact with citric and hydrochloric acid for different periods of time showed a significant increase in the current relative to a previously protected surface, indicating the structural loss of enamel. The thickness of the enamel layer eroded after contact with hydrochloric acid was significantly higher when compared to the one obtained with citric acid. Hence, our results showed that the enamel acid erosion is a relatively fast process, which is strongly dependent on parameters such as pH, time, acid strength and acid concentration.

The use of geoid models to estimate the Mean Dynamic Topography was stimulated with the launching of the GRACE satellite system, since its models present unprecedented precision and space-time resolution. In the present study, besides the DNSC08 mean sea level model, the following geoid models were used with the objective of computing the MDTs: EGM96, EIGEN-5C and EGM2008. In the method adopted, geostrophic currents for the South Atlantic were computed based on the MDTs. In this study it was found that the degree and order of the geoid models affect the determination of TDM and currents directly. The presence of noise in the MDT requires the use of efficient filtering techniques, such as the filter based on Singular Spectrum Analysis, which presents significant advantages in relation to conventional filters. Geostrophic currents resulting from geoid models were compared with the HYCOM hydrodynamic numerical model. In conclusion, results show that MDTs and respective geostrophic currents calculated with EIGEN-5C and EGM2008 models are similar to the results of the numerical model, especially regarding the main large scale features such as boundary currents and the retroflection at the Brazil-Malvinas Confluence.

Root canal preparation may damage NiTi instruments resulting in wear and deformation. The aim of this study was to make a comparative evaluation of the surface topography of the cervical third of four different rotary systems, before and after being used twelve times, in 1.440 resin blocks with simulated root canals with standardized 45 degrees curvatures, and analyzed by atomic force microscopy AFM. The blocks were divided into four groups and prepared according to the manufacturers recommendations: Group 1 - K3 (R); Group 2 - Protaper Universal (R); Group 3 - Twisted Files (R) and Group 4 - Biorace (R). After each preparation, the instruments were washed and autoclaved. A total of 240 instruments were selected, being 30 new instruments and 30 after having been used for the 12th time, from each group. These instruments were analyzed by AFM and for quantitative evaluation, the mean RMS (Root mean square) values of the cervical third of the specimens from the four groups were used. The result showed that all the rotary files used for the 12th time suffered wear with change in the topography of the cervical region of the active portion of the file (ANOVA p < 0.01). Classifying the specimens in increasing order, from the least to the greatest wear suffered, Group 3 (2.8993 nm) presented the least wear, followed by Group 4 (12.2520 nm), Group 1 (36.0043 nm) and lastly, Group 2 (59.8750 nm) with the largest amount of cervical surface wear. In this work, mesoporous titania is prepared by templating latex sphere arrays with four different sphere diameters at the micrometric scale (phi > 1 mu m). The mesoporous titania homogeneously covers the latex spheres and substrate, forming a thin coating characterized by N-2 adsorption isotherm, small angle X-rays scattering, atomic force, field emission and transmission electronic microscopies. Mesoporous titania has been templated into different shapes such as hollow particles and monoliths according to the amount of sol used to fill the voids of the close packed latex spheres. Titania topography strongly depends on the adsorption of polymeric segments over latex spheres surface, which could be decreased by changing the dimensions of latex spheres (phi = 9.5 mu m) generating a lamellar architecture. Thus, micrometric latex sphere arrays can be used to achieve new surface patterns for mesoporous materials via a fast and inexpensive chemical route for construction of functional devices in different technological fields such as energy conversion, inclusion chemistry and biomaterials. Prof. Dr. Orlando Marques de Paiva 87, Sao Paulo, SP 05508270, Brazil. E-mail: marcio_medvet@hotmail.com Rheas are birds belonging to the ratites group and, among ostriches and emus, are the largest birds currently alive. In this work we studied the macroscopic aspects of rheas' digestive tract in order to provide important information to a better understanding of these birds' eating habits as well their anatomy. Twenty young animals aging between two and six months from the Centre for Wild Animals Multiplication (Cemas, scientific breeding license form Ibama no.1478912) were used. After dissection it was observed that their tongue was small and presented a rhomboid form, being disposed on the oral cavity floor, and inserted in its base by a frenulum. The esophagus was a rectilinear tube with elastic aspect and longitudinal elastic fibers, without dilation, which gives it an absence of crop. The proventriculus presented a fusiform form and the gastric ventricle showed and slightly oval form when filled, and was internally coated with a thick gastric cuticle. The small intestine was composed of three distinct regions: duodenum, jejunum and ileum. The duodenum had a light gray color and showed a "U" curved shaped. The jejunum was dark green, long and composed of several short loops arranged above each other. The ileum had a gray color and was connected with the jejunum. In ventral line to the rectum and cloaca, the ileum extended cranially, dorsally to the ascending duodenum. The large intestine was composed of two caeca, one right and one left, and colon-rectum and ileum were continuous with the cloaca. The structures of the rhea digestive tract resemble those described in the literature regarding to its shape and topography, even though rhea's caeca are well developed and relatively long.

Elevated levels of copper have been detected in various types of human cancer cells, such as breast cancer cells, and a number of mechanisms have been proposed to explain the action and influence of copper on tumor progress. In this work, we found that stimulating the proliferation of mammary epithelial MCF7 cells with the high-redox-potential copper complex Cu (GlyGlyHis) is associated with the copper-induced intracellular generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that induces lipid peroxidation and causes increased roughness of external cell membranes, which leads to the formation of larger cell domes. The results presented herein provide new insights into the molecular link between copper and the proliferation of breast cancer cells and, consequently, into the mechanism by which changes in redox balance and ROS accumulation regulates cell membrane roughness. [EN] Between October 2011 and March 2012 submarine volcanic eruptions took place at El Hierro (Canary Islands). The event produced plumes of discolored waters due to the discharge of volcanic matter, gases and fluids. Field samples of Chl-a and sulphur reduced species were collected by some oceanographic cruises (Instituto Español de Oceanografía, IEO).

[EN] The main types of submarine geological emissions are classified as cold seeps (hydrocarbons and brines) and hot vents. These processes result in the emission of geological fluids: brine, gases (mainly hydro-carbons), sediments and rocks. Submarine emissions are associated with an intensive geological, geo-chemical, thermal and biological activity (Judd and Hovland, 2007), and constitute a key process in the dynamics of the global cycles of the planet Earth.

[EN] The submarine volcano eruption off El Hierro Island (Canary Islands) on 10 October 2011 promoted dramatic perturbation of the water column leading to changes in the distribution of pelagic fauna. To study the response of the scattering biota, we combined acoustic data with hydrographic profiles and concurrent sea surface turbidity indexes from satellite imagery. We also monitored changes in the plankton and nekton communities through the eruptive and post-eruptive phases. Decrease of oxygen, acidification, rising temperature and deposition of chemicals in shallow waters resulted in a reduction of epipelagic stocks and a disruption of diel vertical migration (nocturnal ascent) of mesopelagic organisms. Furthermore, decreased light levels at depth caused by extinction in the volcanic plume resulted in a significant shallowing of the deep acoustic scattering layer. Once the eruption ceased, the distribution and abundances of the pelagic biota returned to baseline levels. There was no evidence of a volcano-induced bloom in the plankton community.

The spatio-temporal variations in diversity and abundance of deep-sea macrofaunal assemblages (excluding meiofaunal taxa, as Nematoda, Copepoda and Ostracoda) from the Blanes Canyon (BC) and adjacent open slope are described. The Catalan Sea basin is characterized by the presence of numerous submarine canyons, which are globally acknowledged as biodiversity hot-spots, due to their disturbance regime and incremented conveying of organic matter. This area is subjected to local deep-sea fisheries activities, and to recurrent cold water cascading events from the shelf. The upper canyon (~900 m), middle slope (~1200 m) and lower slope (~1500 m) habitats were investigated during three different months (October 2008, May 2009 and September 2009). A total of 624 specimens belonging to 16 different taxa were found into 67 analyzed samples, which had been collected from the two study areas. Of these, Polychaeta, Mollusca and Crustacea were always the most abundant groups. As expected, the patterns of species diversity and evenness were different in time and space. Both in BC and open slope, taxa diversity and abundance are higher in the shallowest depth and lowest at -1500 m depth. This is probably due to different trophic regimes at these depths. The abundance of filter-feeders is higher inside BC than in the adjacent open slope, which is also related with an increment of predator polychaetes. Surface deposit-feeders are more abundant in the open slope than in BC, along with a decrement of filter-feeders and their predators. Probably these differences are due to higher quantities of suspended organic matter reaching the canyon. The multivariate analyses conducted on major taxa point out major differences effective taxa richness between depths and stations. In September 2009 the analyzed communities double their abundances, with a corresponding increase in richness of taxa. This could be related to a mobilizing event, like the release of accumulated food-supply in a nepheloid layer associated to the arrival of autumn. The highest abundance in BC is detected in the shallowest depth and in late summer (September), probably due to higher food availability caused by stronger flood events coming from Tordera River. The effects of such events seemed to involve adjacent open slope too. The nMDS conducted on major taxa abundance shows a slight temporal difference between the three campaigns samples, with a clear clustering between samples of Sept 09. All depth and all months were dominated by Polychaeta, which have been identified to family level and submitted to further analysis. Family richness have clearly minimum at the -1200 m depth of BC, highlighting the presence of a general impact affecting the populations in the middle slope. Three different matrices have been created, each with a different taxonomic level (All Taxa “AT”, Phylum Level “PL” and Polychaeta Families “PF”). Multivariate analysis (MDS, SIMPER) conducted on PL matrix showed a clear spatial differences between stations (BC and open slope) and depths. MDSs conducted on other two matrices (AT and PF) showed similar patterns, but different from PL analysis. A 2 nd stage analysis have been conducted to understand differences between different taxonomic levels, and PL level has been chosen as the most representative of variation. The faunal differences observed were explained by depth, station and season.
