Quantum field theory with an external background can be considered as a consistent model only if backreaction is relatively small with respect to the background. To find the corresponding consistency restrictions on an external electric field and its duration in QED and QCD, we analyze the mean-energy density of quantized fields for an arbitrary constant electric field E, acting during a large but finite time T. Using the corresponding asymptotics with respect to the dimensionless parameter eET(2), one can see that the leading contributions to the energy are due to the creation of particles by the electric field. Assuming that these contributions are small in comparison with the energy density of the electric background, we establish the above-mentioned restrictions, which determine, in fact, the time scales from above of depletion of an electric field due to the backreaction.

We have obtained nonperturbative one-loop expressions for the mean-energy-momentum tensor and current density of Dirac's field on a constant electriclike back-round. One of the goals of this calculation is to give a consistent description of backreaction in such a theory. Two cases of initial states are considered: the vacuum state and the thermal equilibrium state. First, we perform calculations for the vacuum initial state. In the obtained expressions, we separate the contributions due to particle creation and vacuum polarization. The latter contribution,, are related to the Heisenberg-Euler Lagrangian. Then, we Study the case of the thermal initial state. Here, we separate the contributions due to particle creation, vacuum polarization, and the contributions due to the work of the external field on the particles at the initial state. All these contributions are studied in detail, in different regimes of weak and strong fields and low and high temperatures. The obtained results allow us to establish restrictions on the electric field and its duration under which QED with a strong constant electric field is consistent. Under such restrictions, one can neglect the backreaction of particles created by the electric field. Some of the obtained results generalize the calculations of Heisenberg-Euler for energy density to the case of arbitrary strong electric fields.

In this work we investigate the duality linking standard and tachyon scalar field homogeneous and isotropic cosmologies in N + 1 dimensions. We determine the transformation between standard and tachyon scalar fields and between their associated potentials, corresponding to the same background evolution. We show that, in general, the duality is broken at a perturbative level, when deviations from a homogeneous and isotropic background are taken into account. However, we find that for slow-rolling fields the duality is still preserved at a linear level. We illustrate our results with specific examples of cosmological relevance, where the correspondence between scalar and tachyon scalar field models can be calculated explicitly.

We study the spin-1/2 Ising model on a Bethe lattice in the mean-field limit, with the interaction constants following one of two deterministic aperiodic sequences, the Fibonacci or period-doubling one. New algorithms of sequence generation were implemented, which were fundamental in obtaining long sequences and, therefore, precise results. We calculate the exact critical temperature for both sequences, as well as the critical exponents beta, gamma, and delta. For the Fibonacci sequence, the exponents are classical, while for the period-doubling one they depend on the ratio between the two exchange constants. The usual relations between critical exponents are satisfied, within error bars, for the period-doubling sequence. Therefore, we show that mean-field-like procedures may lead to nonclassical critical exponents.

It is by now well known that the Poincare group acts on the Moyal plane with a twisted coproduct. Poincare invariant classical field theories can be formulated for this twisted coproduct. In this paper we systematically study such a twisted Poincare action in quantum theories on the Moyal plane. We develop quantum field theories invariant under the twisted action from the representations of the Poincare group, ensuring also the invariance of the S-matrix under the twisted action of the group. A significant new contribution here is the construction of the Poincare generators using quantum fields.

Using the density matrix renormalization group, we investigate the Renyi entropy of the anisotropic spin-s Heisenberg chains in a z-magnetic field. We considered the half-odd-integer spin-s chains, with s = 1/2, 3/2, and 5/2, and periodic and open boundary conditions. In the case of the spin-1/2 chain we were able to obtain accurate estimates of the new parity exponents p(alpha)((p)) and p(alpha)((o)) that gives the power-law decay of the oscillations of the alpha-Renyi entropy for periodic and open boundary conditions, respectively. We confirm the relations of these exponents with the Luttinger parameter K, as proposed by Calabrese et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 095701 (2010)]. Moreover, the predicted periodicity of the oscillating term was also observed for some nonzero values of the magnetization m. We show that for s > 1/2 the amplitudes of the oscillations are quite small and get accurate estimates of p(alpha)((p)) and p(alpha)((o)) become a challenge. Although our estimates of the new universal exponents p(alpha)((p)) and p(alpha)((o)) for the spin-3/2 chain are not so accurate, they are consistent with the theoretical predictions.

In a quantum critical chain, the scaling regime of the energy and momentum of the ground state and low-lying excitations are described by conformal field theory (CFT). The same holds true for the von Neumann and Renyi entropies of the ground state, which display a universal logarithmic behavior depending on the central charge. In this Letter we generalize this result to those excited states of the chain that correspond to primary fields in CFT. It is shown that the nth Renyi entropy is related to a 2n-point correlator of primary fields. We verify this statement for the critical XX and XXZ chains. This result uncovers a new link between quantum information theory and CFT.

The electron properties of artificially disordered superlattices embedded in a wide AlGaAs parabolic well were investigated in a strong magnetic field. We demonstrated that in the extreme quantum limit the interlayer disorder results in formation of a new correlated phase. A nearly uniform electron distribution over the superlattice wells was found in a weak magnetic field. However, a nonuniform phase with partially localized electrons, representing well-developed fractional quantum Hall effect features, was observed in high magnetic field (at the filling factor v < 1). A distinct magnetic field-induced transition separates these two phases. (C) 2011 American Institute of Physics. [doi:10.1063/1.3576134]

Multispectral widefield optical imaging has the potential to improve early detection of oral cancer. The appropriate selection of illumination and collection conditions is required to maximize diagnostic ability. The goals of this study were to (i) evaluate image contrast between oral cancer/precancer and non-neoplastic mucosa for a variety of imaging modalities and illumination/collection conditions, and (ii) use classification algorithms to evaluate and compare the diagnostic utility of these modalities to discriminate cancers and precancers from normal tissue. Narrowband reflectance, autofluorescence, and polarized reflectance images were obtained from 61 patients and 11 normal volunteers. Image contrast was compared to identify modalities and conditions yielding greatest contrast. Image features were extracted and used to train and evaluate classification algorithms to discriminate tissue as non-neoplastic, dysplastic, or cancer; results were compared to histologic diagnosis. Autofluorescence imaging at 405-nm excitation provided the greatest image contrast, and the ratio of red-to-green fluorescence intensity computed from these images provided the best classification of dysplasia/cancer versus non-neoplastic tissue. A sensitivity of 100% and a specificity of 85% were achieved in the validation set. Multispectral widefield images can accurately distinguish neoplastic and non-neoplastic tissue; however, the ability to separate precancerous lesions from cancers with this technique was limited. We discuss an approximation for the dynamic charge response of nonlinear spin-1/2 Luttinger liquids in the limit of small momentum. Besides accounting for the broadening of the charge peak due to two-holon excitations, the nonlinearity of the dispersion gives rise to a two-spinon peak, which at zero temperature has an asymmetric line shape. At finite temperature the spin peak is broadened by diffusion. As an application, we discuss the density and temperature dependence of the Coulomb drag resistivity due to long-wavelength scattering between quantum wires.

The longitudinal resistivity rho(xx) of two-dimensional electron gases formed in wells with two subbands displays ringlike structures when plotted in a density-magnetic-field diagram, due to the crossings of spin-split Landau levels (LLs) from distinct subbands. Using spin density functional theory and linear response, we investigate the shape and spin polarization of these structures as a function of temperature and magnetic-field tilt angle. We find that (i) some of the rings ""break'' at sufficiently low temperatures due to a quantum Hall ferromagnetic phase transition, thus exhibiting a high degree of spin polarization (similar to 50%) within, consistent with the NMR data of Zhang et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 246802 (2007)], and (ii) for increasing tilting angles the interplay between the anticrossings due to inter-LL couplings and the exchange-correlation effects leads to a collapse of the rings at some critical angle theta(c), in agreement with the data of Guo et al. [Phys. Rev. B 78, 233305 (2008)].

The ground states of a few electrons confined in two vertically coupled quantum rings in the presence of an external magnetic field are studied systematically within the current spin-density functional theory. Electron-electron interactions combined with inter-ring tunneling affect the electronic structure and the persistent current. For small values of the external magnetic field, we recover the zero magnetic field molecular quantum ring ground state configurations. Increasing the magnetic field many angular momentum, spin, and isospin transitions are predicted to occur in the ground state. We show that these transitions follow certain rules, which are governed by the parity of the number of electrons, the single-particle picture, Hund's rules, and many-body effects. In this work we analyze the dynamical Casimir effect for a massless scalar field confined between two concentric spherical shells considering mixed boundary conditions. We thus generalize a previous result in literature [Phys. Rev. A 78, 032521 (2008)], where the same problem is approached for the field constrained to the Dirichlet-Dirichlet boundary conditions. A general expression for the average number of particle creation is deduced considering an arbitrary law of radial motion of the spherical shells. This expression is then applied to harmonic oscillations of the shells, and the number of particle production is analyzed and compared with the results previously obtained under Dirichlet-Dirichlet boundary conditions.

In this work, we study the role of the ac Stark effects on the excitation of nS(1/2) cold Rydberg atoms produced in a rubidium magneto-optical trap. We have observed an atomic population in the nP(3/2) state after excitation of nS(1/2) for 29 <= n <= 37. Such an observation is normally attributed to binary collisions; however, the interaction between Rb nS(1/2) atoms is repulsive. To explain our results, the dipole-dipole interaction and ac Stark shifts from the excitation laser must be considered. We find that the Rydberg-atom-pair state asymptotically correlating to nP(3/2)+(n-1)P(3/2) is excited directly.

The influence of interlayer coupling on the formation of the quantized Hall phase at the filling factor nu=2 was studied in multilayer GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures. The disorder broadened Gaussian photoluminescence line due to localized electrons was found in the quantized Hall phase of the isolated multi-quanturn-well structure. On the other hand, the quantized Hall phase of weakly coupled multilayers emitted an unexpected asymmetrical line similar to that observed in metallic electron systems. We demonstrated that the observed asymmetry is caused by the partial population of extended electron states formed in the insulating quantized Hall phase due to spin-assisted interlayer percolation. A sharp decrease in the single-particle scattering time associated with these extended states was observed for the filling factor nu=2. (C) 2008 American Institute of Physics. [DOI: 10.1063/1.2978194]
