Issued jointly by the Health and Social Care Board and Public Health AgencyThe Health and Social Care Board and the Public Health Agency have today launched, for public consultation, a new Community Development Strategy.The consultation period will run for 12 weeks from Friday 10 June until Friday 2 September 2011.The Board and Agency want to see strong, resilient communities where everyone has good health and wellbeing, places where people look out for each other and have community pride in where they live.Residents from deprived areas in Northern Ireland experience;lower life expectancy;higher rates of emergency admission to hospital;higher rates of lung cancer;higher rates of suicide; andhigher rates of smoking and alcohol related deaths.The kinds of health and social care issues which can be improved by community development approaches include depression; isolation; falls amongst elderly people; child protection; teenage pregnancy; childhood asthma; postnatal depression; drug and alcohol abuse; and ultimately also long term conditions such as obesity, diabetes and cancer.The Board and Agency seek a number of benefits from implementing this strategy such as; a reduction in health and wellbeing inequalities, which also means addressing the social factors that affect health; strengthening partnership working with service users, the community and voluntary sectors and other organisations; strengthening families and communities; supporting volunteering and making best use of our resources.John Compton, Chief Executive of the Health and Social Care Board said: "Community development is an important way to improving health and wellbeing - driving a message that 'prevention is better than cure' between different groups and communities, and helping to ensure the most effective use of the health and social care budget."Now more than ever we need to work in partnership with families and communities to achieve better health and wellbeing for those living in Northern Ireland.No one organisation can meet this challenge on its own and strong partnerships are needed. BACKGROUND Health sector reforms taking place in Colombia during the Nineties included policies to promote social participation in the health system, which is considered essential to its functioning. The aim of this article is to analyse the meaning and the significance of participation in health for the different social actors involved in implementing policies in Colombia. METHODS A qualitative, descriptive, exploratory study was carried out using focal groups (FG) and semi-structured individual interviews (I) of the different social actors: 210 users (FG), 40 community leaders (FG), 3 policy makers (E) and 36 healthcare professionals (E). A carried out analysis was content up of the contents. The study area corresponded to the municipalities of Tulua and Palmira in Colombia. RESULTS The concept of participation was interpreted differently depending on the actor studied: for users and leaders the concept referred to contributing ideas, presence in social spaces, solidarity and frequently, and use of the health services. Healthcare professionals considered the activities carried out by institutions together with the community as social participation, the use of services and affiliation to the health system. Policy markers considered participation to concern evaluation and control of the health services by the community, to improve its quality. CONCLUSIONS The different concepts of participation reveal dif ferences between the content of the policy and how it is understood and interpreted by the different social actors in their interaction with the health services. These different perspectives must be taken into account to develop a link between society and the health services.

Os conceitos de desenvolvimento sustentável e de educação para o desenvolvimento sustentável estão ainda em evolução o que torna pertinente, hoje, a tentativa de uma clarificação conceptual e sua posterior operacionalização. Além de promover a definição e uso correto dos termos, compete também ao ensino criar e desenvolver as competências necessárias para a sua operacionalidade. Esta investigação pretende contribuir para a autoformação de professores, nomeadamente de professores de Física e Química, em educação para o desenvolvimento sustentável. Pretende que os professores, e aqueles que beneficiam da sua ação, possam ser cidadãos críticos e responsáveis, numa sociedade local e simultaneamente global, que vive num tempo concreto mas, cada vez mais, consciente das repercussões futuras das suas ações e decisões. Tendo por base este objetivo criou-se uma comunidade de prática virtual constituída por professores de Física e Química de Portugal e de países africanos de língua oficial portuguesa. A formação em educação para o desenvolvimento sustentável constituiu o domínio da comunidade de prática. A água foi o tema motivador e aglutinador, pois sendo essencial à vida, torna-se no contexto educativo, e concretamente em educação para o desenvolvimento sustentável, num desafio ético, simultaneamente social, económico, ambiental e político. A prática reflexiva constituiu uma ferramenta fundamental da atividade da comunidade. Da análise da prática desta comunidade, que constituiu o objeto desta investigação, verificámos que os diferentes contextos geográficos, educacionais, culturais e de desenvolvimento dos professores proporcionaram uma participação diversificada na comunidade de prática. Esta participação permitiu, aos membros da referida comunidade, a criação e/ou o desenvolvimento das competências requeridas em educação para o desenvolvimento sustentável. Apesar da pertinência do tema confrontámo-nos com a falta de projetos de investigação semelhantes ao desta investigação, o que constituiu um maior desafio à sua realização.

Los nuevos hábitos de consumo de medios en el marco de la convergencia digital están propiciando un cambio en las estrategias de los medios de comunicación. Mientras unos usuarios siguen prefiriendo la radio, la televisión y la prensa tradicional para informarse otros participan de la experiencia digital en internet (blogs, redes sociales...) y dispositivos móviles, etc. En este panorama es complicado precisar dónde nace y termina el contenido o hasta qué punto es la participación del usuario quien (re) construye la información; así los contenidos mutan y se diluyen en varios soportes. En este contexto, la prensa local también vive las consecuencias del nuevo paradigma y asume los retos del reacomodo del sector ante la nueva realidad. Esta comunicación presenta las conclusiones del estudio cualitativo con entrevistas en profundidad a los responsables de medios locales en Cataluña sobre sus usuarios, contenidos y soportes en el marco de la convergencia digital.

Se presenta una panorámica de las acciones de investigación y desarrollo en preservación digital en el ámbito internacional, incluyendo un apartado dedicado a la situación en España. La mayor atención se da en las aplicaciones de preservación digital en bibliotecas y archivos, pero también se presenta someramente la situación en otros entornos como los repositorios institucionales, los archivos administrativos, los archivos personales, la industria aeroespacial y los museos. El análisis de los protagonistas de la investigación lleva a destacar el papel preeminente de algunas bibliotecas y archivos nacionales, de determinados países y una incipiente entrada de empresas de software. En cuanto a las líneas de investigación destaca la integración de herramientas para generar sistemas de preservación integrados.

In this paper we describe a proposal for defining the relationships between resources, users and services in a digital repository. Nowadays, virtual learning environments are widely used but digital repositories are not fully integrated yet into the learning process. Our final goal is to provide final users with recommendation systems and reputation schemes that help them to build a true learning community around the institutional repository, taking into account their educational context (i.e. the courses they are enrolled into) and their activity (i.e. system usage by their classmates and teachers). In order to do so, we extend the basic resource concept in a traditional digital repository by adding all the educational context and other elements from end-users' profiles, thus bridging users, resources and services, and shifting from a library-centered paradigm to a learning-centered one.

Tämän Pro gradu -tutkielman tarkoituksena on luoda malli yhteisöllisten verkkopalveluiden ansaintalogiikoista ja niiden edellytyksistä. Ansaintalogiikoiden edellytyksistä käsiteltiin isona kokonaisuutena arvontuottoa. Tutkimus suoritettiin rekisteröitymällä tutkittaviin yhteisöllisiin palveluihin sekä haastattelemalla yhteisöjen parissa työskenteleviä asiantuntijoita. Tutkimuksen teoreettisina viitekehyksinä käytettiin virtuaaliyhteisöjen teorioita sekä arvontuoton teorioita sähköisestä liiketoiminnasta. Tutkimuksesta kävi ilmi, että käytännön ansaintamahdollisuudet ovat teorian esittämää valikoimaa pienemmät. Yhteisöjen kannalta mahdollisia ansaintalogiikoita ovat tutkimuksen mukaan mainonnasta saatavat tulot sekä maksullisista lisäpalveluista saatavat tulot. Mahdollistaakseen nämä ansaintalogiikat täytyy yhteisön hallinnoijan saada kerättyä suuri määrä aktiivisia käyttäjiä palveluun, jotka tuottavat itse palvelun arvokkaimmansisällön. Palvelun perustamisen osalta voidaan päätellä, että yhteisön koko ja sen aktiivisuus ovat suurelta osin mahdottomia ennustaa. Yhteisöjen kehitystä ja toimintaa voidaan kuitenkin tukea tarjoamalla sosiaalista vuorovaikutusta tukevia toimintoja.

This paper presents the quantitative and qualitative findings from an experiment designed to evaluate a developing model of affective postures for full-body virtual characters in immersive virtual environments (IVEs). Forty-nine participants were each requested to explore a virtual environment by asking two virtual characters for instructions. The participants used a CAVE-like system to explore the environment. Participant responses and their impression of the virtual characters were evaluated through a wide variety of both quantitative and qualitative methods. Combining a controlled experimental approach with various data-collection methods provided a number of advantages such as providing a reason to the quantitative results. The quantitative results indicate that posture plays an important role in the communication of affect by virtual characters. The qualitative findings indicated that participants attribute a variety of psychological states to the behavioral cues displayed by virtual characters. In addition, participants tended to interpret the social context portrayed by the virtual characters in a holistic manner. This suggests that one aspect of the virtual scene colors the perception of the whole social context portrayed by the virtual characters. We conclude by discussing the importance of designing holistically congruent virtual characters especially in immersive settings.

Background: Antiretroviral therapy has changed the natural history of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in developed countries, where it has become a chronic disease. This clinical scenario requires a new approach to simplify follow-up appointments and facilitate access to healthcare professionals. Methodology: We developed a new internet-based home care model covering the entire management of chronic HIV-infected patients. This was called Virtual Hospital. We report the results of a prospective randomised study performed over two years, comparing standard care received by HIV-infected patients with Virtual Hospital care. HIV-infected patients with access to a computer and broadband were randomised to be monitored either through Virtual Hospital (Arm I) or through standard care at the day hospital (Arm II). After one year of follow up, patients switched their care to the other arm. Virtual Hospital offered four main services: Virtual Consultations, Telepharmacy, Virtual Library and Virtual Community. A technical and clinical evaluation of Virtual Hospital was carried out. Findings: Of the 83 randomised patients, 42 were monitored during the first year through Virtual Hospital (Arm I) and 41 through standard care (Arm II). Baseline characteristics of patients were similar in the two arms. The level of technical satisfaction with the virtual system was high: 85% of patients considered that Virtual Hospital improved their access to clinical data and they felt comfortable with the videoconference system. Neither clinical parameters [level of CD4 + T lymphocytes, proportion of patients with an undetectable level of viral load (p = 0.21) and compliance levels 90% (p = 0.58)] nor the evaluation of quality of life or psychological questionnaires changed significantly between the two types of care. Conclusions: Virtual Hospital is a feasible and safe tool for the multidisciplinary home care of chronic HIV patients. Telemedicine should be considered as an appropriate support service for the management of chronic HIV infection.
