Pure hydroxyapatite (HA) and hydroxyapatite decorated with silver (HA@Ag) nanoparticles were synthesized and characterized. The antifungal effect of HA@Ag nanoparticles in a distilled water solution was evaluated against Candida albicans. The origin of the antifungal activity of the HA@Ag is also discussed. The results obtained showed that the HA nanorod morphology remained the same with Ag ions decorations on the HA structure which were deposited in the form of nanospheres. Interaction where occurred between the structure and its defect density variation in the interfacial HA@Ag and intrafacial HA region with the fungal medium resulted in antifungal activity. The reaction mechanisms involved oxygen and water adsorption which formed an active complex cluster. The decomposition and desorption of the final products as well as the electron/hole recombination process have an important role in fungicidal effects. © 2013 C. A. Zamperini et al.

The reaction of 2'-deoxyguanosine with the alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehydes trans-2-octenal, trans-2-nonenal, trans-2-decenal, trans,trans-2,4-nonadienal, and trans,trans-2,4-decadienal in THF gives rise to three novel adducts: 3-(2'-deoxy-beta-D-erythro-pentafuranosyl)-7-[3-hydroxy-1-(3(2'-deoxy-beta-D-erythro-pentafuranosyl)-3,5-dihydro-imidazo[1,2-alpha]purin-9-one-7-yl)-propyl] -3,5-dihydro-imidazo[1,2-alpha]purin-9-one (M) and 3-(2'-deoxy-beta-D-erythro-pentafuranosyl)-7-(tetrahydrofuran-2-yl)-3,5-dihydro-imidazo[1,2-alpha]purin-9-one (A8 and A9), which are not observed in the absence of THF. These adducts were isolated from in vitro reactions by reversed-phase HPLC and fully characterized on the basis of spectroscopic measurements. Adduct A7 consists of two 1,N-2-etheno-2'-deoxyguanosine (1,N-2-epsilondGuo) residues linked to a hydroxy-carbon side chain; adducts A8 and A9 are interconvertible 1,N-2-epsilondGuo derivatives bearing a THF moiety. The proposed reaction mechanism involves the electrophilic attack on 1,N-2-epsilondGuo by the carbonyl of 4-hydroxy-butanal, generated via ring opening of alpha-hydroxy-THF (THF-OH), yielding adducts A8 and A9. A further combination of these adducts with another 1,N-2-epsilondGuo produces the double adduct A7. These findings demonstrate that reactions of unsaturated aldehydes in the presence of THF produce novel condensation 1,N-2-epsilondGuo-THF adducts. Further studies would indicate the relevance of these adducts in THF toxicity.

trans,trans-2,4-Decadienal (DDE) is an important breakdown product of lipid peroxidation. This aldehyde is cytotoxic to mammalian cells and is known to be implicated in DNA damage. Therefore, attempts were made in this work to assess the reactivity of DDE with 2'-deoxyadenosine (dAdo). It was shown that DDE is able to bind to 2'-deoxyadenosine, yielding highly fluorescent products. Besides 1,N-6-etheno-2'-deoxyadenosine (epsilon dAdo), two other related adducts, 1-[3-(2-deoxy-beta-D-erythro-pentofuranosyl)3H-imidazo[2,1-i]purin-7-yl]-1,2,3-octanetriol and 1-[3-(2-deoxy-beta-D-erythro-pentofuranosyl)-3H-imidazo[2,1-i]purin-7-yl]-1,2-heptanediol, were isolated by reverse phase high-performance liquid chromatography and characterized on the basis of their UV, fluorescence, nuclear magnetic resonance, and mass spectrometry features. The reaction mechanism for the formation of the DDE-2'-deoxyadenosine adducts involves 2,4-decadienal epoxidation and subsequent addition to the N-2 amino group of 2'-deoxyadenosine, followed by cyclization at the N-1 site. Adducts differ by the length of carbon side chain and the number of hydroxyl groups. The present data indicate that DDE can be epoxidized by peroxides, and the resulting products are able to form several adducts with 2'-deoxyadenosine and/or DNA. Endogenous DNA adduct formation can contribute to the already reported high cytotoxicity of DDE to mammalian cells.

Using the high-resolution performance of the fragment separator FRS at GSI we have discovered 60 new neutron-rich isotopes in the atomic number range of 60 <= Z <= 78. The new isotopes were unambiguously identified in reactions with a U-238 beam impinging on a Be target at 1 GeV/nucleon. The production cross-section for the new isotopes have been measured down to the pico-barn level and compared with predictions of different model calculations. For elements above hafnium fragmentation is the dominant reaction mechanism which creates the new isotopes, whereas fission plays a dominant role for the production of the new isotopes up to thulium. The kinetics of sugar cane bagasse cellulose saccharification and the decomposition of glucose under extremely low acid (ELA) conditions, (0.07%), 0.14%, and 0.28% H2SO4, and at high temperatures were investigated using batch reactors. The first-order rate constants were obtained by weight loss, remaining glucose, and fitting glucose concentration profiles determined with HPLC using the Saeman model. The maximum glucose yields reached 67.6% (200 degrees C, 0.07% H2SO4, 30 min), 69.8% (210 degrees C, 0.14% H2SO4, 10 min), and 67.3% (210 degrees C, 0.28% H2SO4, 6 min). ELA conditions produced remarkable glucose yields when applied to bagasse cellulose. The first-order rate constants were used to calculate activation energies and extrathermodynamic parameters to elucidate the reaction mechanism under ELA conditions. The effect of acid concentration on cellulose hydrolysis and glucose decomposition was also investigated. The observed activation energies and reaction orders with respect to hydronium ion for cellulose hydrolysis and glucose decomposition were 184.9 and 124.5 kJ/mol and 1.27 and 0.75, respectively.

Direct borohydride fuel cells (DBFCs) are attractive energy generators for powering portable electronic devices, mainly due to their high energy density and number of electrons per borohydride ion. However, the lack of a highly efficient electrocatalyst for the borohydride oxidation reaction limits the performance of these devices. The most commonly studied electrocatalysts for this reaction are composed of gold and platinum. Nevertheless, for these metals, the borohydride electrooxidation reaction mechanism (BOR) is not completely understood, and the total oxidation reaction, involving eight electrons per BH4- species, competes with parallel reactions, with a lower number of exchanged electrons and/or with heterogeneous chemical hydrolysis. Considering the above-mentioned issues, this work presents recent advances in the knowledge of the BOR pathways on polycrystalline (bulk) Au and Pt electrocatalysts. It presents the studies of the BOR reaction on Au and Pt electrodes using in situ Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FUR), and on-line Differential Electrochemical Mass Spectrometry (DEMS). The spectroscopic and spectrometric data provided physical evidence of intermediate species and the formation of H-2 in the course of the BOR as a function of the electrode potential. These results enabled to advance in the knowledge about the BOR pathways on Au and Pt electrocatalysts. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
