In this paper, the study of a third-order mechanical oscillator is presented by demonstrating its equivalence to the well-known R.C. multivibrator with two additional reactive elements. The conditions for the oscillator's possession of periodic solutions are presented. It is also shown that under certain conditions, the study of the given third-order autonomous system can be reduced to the study of an equivalent second-order, non-autonomous system.

It was proposed earlier [P. L. Sachdev, K. R. C. Nair, and V. G. Tikekar, J. Math. Phys. 27, 1506 (1986); P. L. Sachdev and K. R. C. Nair, ibid. 28, 977 (1987)] that the Euler–Painlevé equations  y(d2y/dη2)+a(dy/dη)2 +f(η)y(dy/dη)+g(η)y2+b(dy/dη) +c=0 represent generalized Burgers equations (GBE’s) in the same way as Painlevé equations represent the Korteweg–de Vries type of equations. The earlier studies were carried out in the context of GBE’s with damping and those with spherical and cylindrical symmetry. In the present paper, GBE’s with variable coefficients of viscosity and those with inhomogeneous terms are considered for their possible connection to Euler–Painlevé equations. It is found that the Euler–Painlevé equation, which represents the GBE ut+uβux=(δ/2)g(t)uxx, g(t)=(1+t)n, β>0, has solutions, which either decay or oscillate at η=±∞, only when −1<n<1. The solutions are shocklike when n=1. On the other hand, they oscillate over the whole real line when n=−1. Furthermore, the solutions monotonically decay both at η=+∞ and η=−∞, that is, they have a single hump form if β≥βn=(1−n)/(1+n). For β<βn, the solutions have an oscillatory behavior either at η=+∞ or at η=−∞, or at η=+∞ and η=−∞. For β=βn, there exists a single parameter family of exact single hump solutions, similar to those found for the nonplanar Burgers equations in Paper II. Thus the parametric value β=βn seems to bifurcate the families of solutions, which remain bounded at η=±∞. Other GBE’s considered here are also found to be reducible to Euler–Painlevé equations.

The reactions of the mononuclear cyclodiphosphazane complexes, cis-[Mo(CO)(4){cis-[PhNP(OR)](2)}(2)] with [Mo(CO)(4)(nbd)] (nbd = norbornadiene). [Mo(CO)(4)(NHC5H10)(2)] or [MCl(2)(cod)] (cod = cycloocta-1,5-diene) afforded the homobimetallic complexes; [Mo-2(CO)(8){mu-cis-[PhNP(OR)](2)}(2)] (R = C(5)H(4)Me-p 5 or CH2CF3 6) or the heterobimetallic complexes. [Mo-2(CO)(8){mu-cis-[PhNP(OE)](2)}(2)MCl(2)] (R = C(6)H(4)Me-p; M = Pd 7 or Pt 8). In all the above complexes, the two metal moieties are bridged by two cyclodiphosphazane ligands. The reactions of the mononuclear complexes, cis-[M(CO)(4)(A){cis-[PhNP(OC(6)H(4)Me-p)](2)}] with (M'Cl-2(cod)] afforded the trinuclear complexes, cis-[M'Cl-2[M(CO)(4)(A){cis-[PhNP(OC(6)H(4)Me-p)](2)}](2)] (M' = Pd, M = Mo, A = P(OMe)(3) 10; M' = Pt, M = Mo. A = P(OMe)(3) 11; M' = Pd. M = W. A = NHC5H10 12; M' = Pt, M = W. A = NHC5H10 13). The structure of the complex 5 has been determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography.

Three classification techniques, namely, K-means Cluster Analysis (KCA), Fuzzy Cluster Analysis (FCA), and Kohonen Neural Networks (KNN) were employed to group 25 microwatersheds of Kherthal watershed, Rajasthan into homogeneous groups for formulating the basis for suitable conservation and management practices. Ten parameters, mainly, morphological, namely, drainage density (D-d), bifurcation ratio (R-b), stream frequency (F-u), length of overland flow (L-o), form factor (R-f), shape factor (B-s), elongation ratio (R-e), circulatory ratio (R-c), compactness coefficient (C-c) and texture ratio (T) are used for the classification. Optimal number of groups is chosen, based on two cluster validation indices Davies-Bouldin and Dunn's. Comparative analysis of various clustering techniques revealed that 13 microwatersheds out of 25 are commonly suggested by KCA, FCA and KNN i.e., 52%; 17 microwatersheds out of 25 i.e., 68% are commonly suggested by KCA and FCA whereas these are 16 out of 25 in FCA and KNN (64%) and 15 out of 25 in KNN and CA (60%). It is observed from KNN sensitivity analysis that effect of various number of epochs (1000, 3000, 5000) and learning rates (0.01, 0.1-0.9) on total squared error values is significant even though no fixed trend is observed. Sensitivity analysis studies revealed that microwatershecls have occupied all the groups even though their number in each group is different in case of further increase in the number of groups from 5 to 6, 7 and 8. Electrical characterization of Ba(Zr0.1Ti0.9)O-3 thin films grown by pulsed laser ablation technique

In situ annealed thin films of ferroelectric Ba(Zr0.1Ti0.9)O-3 were deposited on platinum substrates by pulsed laser ablation technique. The as grown films were polycrystalline in nature without the evidence of any secondary phases. The polarization hysteresis loop confirmed the ferroelectricity, which was also cross-checked with the capacitance-voltage characteristics. The remnant polarization was about 5.9 muC cm(-2) at room temperature and the coercive field was 45 kV. There was a slight asymmetry in the hysteresis for different polarities, which was thought to be due to the work function differences of different electrodes. The dielectric constant was about 452 and was found to exhibit low frequency dispersion that increased with frequency, This was related to the space-charge polarization. The complex impedance was plotted and this exhibited a semicircular trace, and indicated an equivalent parallel R - C circuit within the sample. This was attributed to the grain response. The DC leakage current-voltage plot was consistent with the space-charge limited conduction theory, but showed some deviation, which was explained by assuming a Poole-Frenkel type conduction to be superimposed on to the usual space-charge controlled current. Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) equations are solved using third order upwind biased Roe's scheme for the inviscid fluxes and second order central difference scheme for the viscous fluxes. The Baldwin & Lomax turbulence model is employed for Reynolds stresses. The governing equations are solved using finite-volume implicit scheme in body fitted curvilinear coordinate O-grid system. Computations axe reported for a flat plate apart from RAE 2822 and NACA 0012 airfoils. Results for the flat plate at M = 0.3, R-c = 4.0 x 10(6) compare favourably with the analytical solution. Results for the two airfoils are compared with experiment. There is a good agreement in C-p distribution between experiment and computation for both the airfoils. Comparison of C-f distribution with experiment for RAE 2822 airfoil is reasonable.

We study moduli spaces M-X (r, c(1), c(2)) parametrizing slope semistable vector bundles of rank r and fixed Chern classes c(1), c(2) on a ruled surface whose base is a rational nodal curve. We showthat under certain conditions, these moduli spaces are irreducible, smooth and rational (when non-empty). We also prove that they are non-empty in some cases. We show that for a rational ruled surface defined over real numbers, the moduli space M-X (r, c(1), c(2)) is rational as a variety defined over R.

This volume summarizes the results of three workshops organized by the PICES-GLOBEC Climate Change and Carrying Capacity Program that were held just prior to the PICES Seventh Annual Meeting in Fairbanks, Alaska, in October 1998. These workshops represent the efforts of the REX, MODEL, and MONITOR Task Teams to integrate the results of national GLOBEC and GLOBEC-like programs to arrive at a better understanding of the ways in which climate change affects North Pacific ecosystems. In this paper, we investigate the adhesive contact between a rigid cylinder of radius R and a graded elastic half-space with a Young's modulus varying with depth according to a power-law, E = E-0(y/c(0))(k) (0 < k < 1), while the Poisson's ratio v remains constant. The results show that, for a given value of ratio R/C-0, a critical value of k exists at which the pull-off force attains a maximum; for a fixed value of k, the larger the ratio R/c(0), the larger the pull-off force is. For Gibson materials (i.e., k = 1 and v = 0.5), closed-form analytical solutions can be obtained for the critical contact half-width at pull-off and pull-off force. We further discuss the perfect stick case with both externally normal and tangential loads.

<p>A series of terl-butylperoxide complexes of hafnium, Cp*<sub>2</sub>Hf(R)(OOCMe<sub>3</sub>) (Cp* = ((η<sup>5</sup>-C<sub>5</sub>Me<sub>5</sub>); R = Cl, H, CH<sub>3</sub>, CH<sub>2</sub>CH<sub>3</sub>, CH<sub>2</sub>CH<sub>2</sub>CH<sub>3</sub>, CH<sub>2</sub>CH<sub>2</sub>CH<sub>2</sub>CH<sub>3</sub>, CH<sub>2</sub>CHMe<sub>2</sub>, CH=CHCMe<sub>3</sub>, C<sub>6</sub>H<sub>5</sub>, meta-C<sub>6</sub>H<sub>3</sub>(CH<sub>2</sub>)2) and Cp*(η<sup>5</sup>-C<sub>5</sub>(CH<sub>3</sub>)<sub>4</sub>CH<sub>2</sub>CH<sub>2</sub>CH<sub>2</sub>)Hf(OOCMe<sub>3</sub>), has been synthesized. One example has been structurally characterized, Cp*<sub>2</sub>Hf(OOCMe<sub>3</sub>)CH<sub>2</sub>CH<sub>3</sub> crystallizes in space group P2<sub>1</sub>/c, with a = 19.890(7)Å, b = 8.746(4)Å, c = 17.532(6)Å, β = 124.987(24)°, V = 2498(2)Å<sup>3</sup>, Z = 4 and R<sub>F</sub> = 0.054 (2222 reflections, I > 0). Despite the coordinative unsaturation of the hafnium center, the terl-butylperoxide ligand is coordinated in a mono-dentate ligand. The mode of decomposition of these species is highly dependent on the substituent R. For R = H, CH<sub>2</sub>CH<sub>3</sub>, CH<sub>2</sub>CH<sub>2</sub>CH<sub>3</sub>, CH<sub>2</sub>CH<sub>2</sub>CH<sub>2</sub>CH<sub>3</sub>, CH<sub>2</sub>CHMe<sub>2</sub> a clean first order conversion to Cp*<sub>2</sub>Hf(OCMe<sub>3</sub>)(OR) is observed (for R CH<sub>2</sub>CH<sub>3</sub>, ΔHǂ = 19.6 kcal•mol<sup>-1</sup>, ΔSǂ = -13 e.u.). These results are discussed in terms of a two step mechanism involving η<sup>2</sup>-coordination of the terl-butylperoxide ligand. Homolytic O-O bond cleavage is observed upon heating of Cp*<sub>2</sub>Hf(OOCMe<sub>3</sub>) R (R = C<sub>6</sub>H<sub>6</sub>, meta-C<sub>6</sub>H<sub>3</sub>(CH<sub>3</sub>)<sub>2</sub>). In the presence of excess 9,10-dihydroanthracene thermolysis of Cp*<sub>2</sub>Hf(OOCMe<sub>3</sub>)C<sub>6</sub>H<sub>6</sub> cleanly affords Cp*<sub>2</sub>Hf(C<sub>6</sub>H<sub>6</sub>)OH and HOCMe<sub>3</sub> (ΔHǂ = 22.6 kcal•mol<sup>-1</sup>, ΔSǂ = -9 e.u.). The O-O bond strength in these complexes is thus estimated to be 22 kcal•mol<sup>-1</sup>.</p> <p>Cp*<sub>2</sub>Ta(CH<sub>2</sub>)H, Cp*<sub>2</sub>Ta(CHC<sub>6</sub>H<sub>5</sub>)H, Cp*<sub>2</sub>Ta(C<sub>6</sub>H<sub>4</sub>)H, Cp*<sub>2</sub>Ta(CH<sub>2</sub>=CH<sub>2</sub>)H and Cp*<sub>2</sub>Ta(CH<sub>2</sub>=CHMe)H react, presumably through Cp*<sub>2</sub>Ta-R intermediates, with H<sub>2</sub>O to give Cp*<sub>2</sub>Ta(O)H and alkane. Cp*<sub>2</sub>Ta(O)H was structurally characterized: space group P2<sub>1</sub>/n, a= 13.073(3)Å, b = 19.337(4)Å, c = 16.002(3)Å, β = 108.66(2)°, V = 3832(1)Å<sup>3</sup>, Z = 8 and R<sub>F</sub> = 0.0672 (6730 reflections). Reaction of terlbutylhydroperoxide with these same starting materials ultimately yields Cp*<sub>2</sub>Ta(O)R and HOCMe<sub>3</sub>. Cp*<sub>2</sub>Ta(CH<sub>2</sub>=CHR)OH species are proposed as intermediates in the olefin hydride reactions. Cp*<sub>2</sub>Ta(O<sub>2</sub>)R species can be generated from the reaction of the same starting materials and O<sub>2</sub>. Lewis acids have been shown to promote oxygen insertion in these complexes.</p>

The objective of this study is to describe the present statu s of the coarse fish populations of the River Avon, Hampshire. The study arose from a widespread concern among anglers and riparian owners that fish numbers had decreased since the early 1970's, and from a scarcity of accurate information on population densities on which to assess this complaint. It was realised at the outset that, without such information from earlier years, the survey would not reveal the extent of any decline in the fisheries. The result s of the survey are compared with available data from other rivers , chiefly the nearby R. Frome and R. Stour. They may be used to assess any futur e changes in population densities and growth rates, and to indicate promising areas for future research. The data were collected from a quantitative survey of twelve river sections along the fifty kilometres of river between Salisbury and Sopley, and a qualitative survey of three weir pools within the same area from 14 September to 9 October, 1987.
