· S'ha preparat i caracteritzat una família de complexos de Cu(III) contenint lligands triazamacrocíclics, estudiant-se les seves propietats estructurals, espectroscòpiques i redox. Aquesta àmplia família de complexos tenen un gran interès perquè permeten descriure les propietats dels complexos de Cu en un estat d'oxidació poc habitual i a més ens han permès mesurar de manera quantitativa l'efecte Meyerstein. · Una nova família de complexos de Cu(I) amb els lligands triazamacrocíclics es sintetitzada i caracteritzada per tècniques espectroscòpiques i estructurals, demostrant que aquests complexos presenten diferents estructures a l'estat sòlid i en dissolució. Així doncs, mentre que en dissolució es demostra per RMN que es tracta d'una espècie monomèrica, la determinació estructural per difracció de raigs X d'aquests complexos de Cu(I), ens confirma la formació d'espècies polimèriques. Per altra banda, s'ha estudiat la seva reactivitat; a) la seva implicació en la formació de lligands deuterats mitjançant l'intercanvi H/D en condicions suaus i b) la formació de complexos bisfenoxo a partir de la reactivitat entre els corresponents complexos de Cu(I) i oxigen molecular. De la mateixa manera, s'ha preparat el corresponent anàleg de Ag(I) en estat sòlid, obtenint la formació d'un polímer de Ag(I), el qual presenta a l'estat sòlid una estructura en forma de ziga-zaga, diferent a l'estructura del polímer de Cu(I), que és lineal. · S'ha determinat i proposat el mecanisme que té lloc en l'activació de l'enllaç C-H i posterior reacció de transferència per tal d'estabilitzar els productes finals mitjançant una reacció de desproporció. El seguiment de la reacció té lloc mitjançant tècniques espectroscòpiques com UV-vis. Dit seguiment, ens permet determinar les diferents influències electròniques sobre la reacció de formació dels complexos organometàl·lics de Cu(III). A més a més, el seguiment de la reacció a baixa temperatura ens permet determinar espectroscòpica i teòricament la formació d'un intermedi de Cu(II), i mitjançant la determinació dels paràmetres cinètics i termodinàmics es proposa un mecanisme de reacció. Posteriorment, s'ha assajat la reactivitat d'una sal de Cu(II) amb un lligand macrocíclic que conté un grup metil en el carboni orientat cap al centre del macrocicle, implicant la formació d'un intermedi agòstic. De la determinació estructural d'aquest intermedi de CuII i del lligand protonat, s'extreuen una sèrie de conclusions molt interessants, com són la demostració estructural de l'activació de l'enllaç C-C en la primera etapa de formació i de manera anàloga poder comparar-ho amb els sistemes macrocíclics HL2-HL6, demostrant la possible formació d'un intermedi agòstic, on es produeix l'activació de l'enllaç C-H. Aquesta similitud estaria d'acord amb els sistemes HL2-HL6, els quals espectroscòpica i teòricament s'havia detectat la presència d'un intermedi de característiques similars. Degut a l'acidesa d'aquest protó, i gràcies a la presència d'una base com és el propi lligand, aquest podia ésser extret donant lloc a la formació dels corresponents organometàl·lics de Cu(III). Dita estructura també representa un dels pocs exemples d'un organometàl·lic de CuII, un estat d'oxidació poc conegut dins d'aquest camp. · S'ha descrit la reactivitat dels nous complexos organometàl·lics de Cu(III), els quals sota medi pròtic i en condicions àcides o neutres són espècies totalment estables, però en condicions bàsiques o reductores aquestes espècies reaccionen donant lloc a la formació de noves espècies de tipus bisfenoxo, on el Cu es troba en estat d'oxidació +2. S'han caracteritzat mitjançant difracció de RX, on es s'observa l'entorn químic del Cu, la geometria del complex bisfenoxo i l'hidroxilació de l'anell aromàtic. · Finalment, s'ha descrit per primera vegada la síntesi i caracterització d'uns nous complexos organometàl·lics de Ni. Aquests són sintetitzats en base als càlculs teòrics realitzats sobre els nostres sistemes macrocíclics. Per aquests complexos hem investigat l'efecte del metall, canviant el coure per altres metalls de la primera sèrie de transició (Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn) i de la segona sèrie de transició (Ru, Rh, Pd, Ag). Els resultats demostren que el Ni(II), és el metall que presenta una major capacitat de l'activació de l'enllaç C-H en aquests sistemes aromàtics. Aquests compostos s'oxiden lentament cap a complexos de Ni(III). Per altra banda, l'addició d'una sal de clor sobre una solució d'un complex de Ni(II) permet aïllar el corresponent complex de Ni(III), caracteritzat per ressonància de spin electrònic

Aquesta tesi és el reflex que de la cooperació entre grups experimentals i grups teòrics s'aconsegueix l'assoliment d'objectius inassolibles de forma individual. A partir de la DFT s'expliquen processos inorgànics i organometàl·lics de gran valor biològic i/o industrial. La tesi està enfocada especialment a l'estudi de complexos mononuclears i binuclears de coure, on té lloc l'activació d'enllaços C-H, C-C, i O-O. L'estudi de complexos octaèdrics de ruteni ha permès dur a terme extensos estudis isomèrics i racionalitzar les propietats espectroscòpiques dels mateixos. A més a més, estudis més puntuals respecte clusters de coure, l'estudi de la reacció de Pawson-Khand, l'estudi d'enllaços Pt-Pt en complexos trimèrics de platí, a més a més de l'estudi de la isomeria de complexos de Ni i Pt.

The adsorption and hydrogenation of acrolein on the Ag(111) surface has been investigated by high resolution synchrotron XPS, NEXAFS, and temperature programmed reaction. The molecule adsorbs intact at all coverages and its adsorption geometry is critically important in determining chemoselectivity toward the formation of allyl alcohol, the desired but thermodynamically disfavored product. In the absence of hydrogen adatoms (H(a)), acrolein lies almost parallel to the metal surface; high coverages force the C=C bond to tilt markedly, likely rendering it less vulnerable toward reaction with hydrogen adatoms. Reaction with coadsorbed H(a) yields allyl alcohol, propionaldehyde, and propanol, consistent with the behavior of practical dispersed Ag catalysts operated at atmospheric pressure: formation of all three hydrogenation products is surface reaction rate limited. Overall chemoselectivity is strongly influenced by secondary reactions of allyl alcohol. At low H(a) coverages, the C=C bond in the newly formed allyl alcohol molecule is strongly tilted with respect to the surface, rendering it immune to attack by H(a) and leading to desorption of the unsaturated alcohol. In contrast with this, at high H(a) coverages, the C=C bond in allyl alcohol lies almost parallel to the surface, undergoes hydrogenation by H(a), and the saturated alcohol (propanol) desorbs.

Ab initio calculations using density functional theory have shown that the reactions that occur between artemisinin, 1, a cyclic trioxane active against malaria, and some metal ions and complexes lead to a series of radicals which are probably responsible for its therapeutic activity. In particular it has been shown that the interaction of Fe(H) with artemisinin causes the O-O bond to be broken as indeed does Fe(III) and Cu(I), while Zn(II) does not. Calculations were carried out with Fe(II) in several different forms including the bare ion, [Fe(H2O)(5)](2+) and [FeP(Im)] (P, porphyrin; Im, imadazole) and similar results were obtained. The resulting oxygen-based radicals are readily converted to more stable carbon-based radicals and/or. stable products. Similar radicals and products are also formed from two simple model trioxanes 2 and 3 that show little or no therapeutic action against malaria although some subtle differences were obtained. This suggests that the scaffold surrounding the pharmacophore may be involved in molecular recognition events allowing efficient uptake of this trioxane warhead into the parasite. Theoretical calculations have been carried out on the interactions of several endoperoxides which are potential antimalarials, including the clinically useful artemisinin, with two possible sources of iron in the parasite, namely the hexa-aquo ferrous ion [Fe(H2O)(6)](2+) and haeme. DFT calculations show that the reactions of all endoperoxides considered, with both sources of iron, initially generate a Fe-O bond followed by cleavage of the O-O bond to oxygen radical species. Subsequently, they can be transformed into carbon-centred radicals of greater stability. However, with [Fe(H2O)(6)](2+) as the iron source, the oxygen-centred radical species are more likely to react further akin to Fenton's reagent, whereby iron salts encourage hydrogen peroxide to act as an oxidizing agent, and that solvent plays a major role. In contrast, when reacting with haeme, the oxygen-centred radicals interconvert to more stable carbon-centred radicals, which can then alkylate haeme. Subsequent cleavage of the Fe-O bond leads to stable and inactive antimalarial products. These results indicate that the reactivity of the endoperoxides as antimalarials is greater with iron hexahydrates for radical-mediated damage as opposed to haeme, which leads to unreactive species. Since only nanomolar quantities of hydrated metal ions could catalyse the reactions leading to damage to the parasites, this could be an alternative or competitive reaction responsible for the antimalarial activity. Four tridentate dibasic ONO donor hydrazone ligands derived from the condensation of benzoylhydrazine with either 2-hydroxyacetophenone or its para substituted derivatives (H2L1-4, general abbreviation H2L) have been used as primary ligands and 8-hydroxyquinoline (Hhq, a bidentate monobasic ON donor species) has been used as auxiliary ligand. The reaction of [(VO)-O-IV(acac)21 with H2L in methanol followed by the addition of Hhq in equimolar ratio under aerobic condition afforded the mixed-ligand oxovanadium(V) complexes of the type [(VO)-O-V(L)(hq)] (1-4) in excellent yield. The X-ray structure of the compound [(VO)-O-V(L-4)(hq)] (4) indicates that the H2L4 ligand is bonded with vanadium meridionally in a tridentate dinegative fashion through its deprotonated phenolic-O, deprotonated enolic-O and imine-N atoms. The V-O bond length order is: oxo < phenolato < enolato. H-1 NMR spectra of 4 in CDCl3 solution indicates that it's solid-state structure is retained in solution. Complexes are diamagnetic and exhibit only ligand to metal charge transfer (LMCT) transition band near 530 nm in CH2Cl2 solution in addition to intra-ligand pi-pi* transition band near 335 rim and they display quasi-reversible one electron reduction peak near -0.10 V versus SCE in CH2Cl2 solution. lambda(max) (for LMCT transition) and the reduction peak potential (E-p(c)) values of the complexes are found to be linearly related with the Hammett (sigma) constants of the substituents in the aryloxy ring of the hydrazone ligands. lambda(max) and E-p(c) values show large dependence d lambda(max)/d sigma = 32.54 nm and dE(p)(c)/d sigma = 0.19 V, respectively, on the Hammett constant. The hydrothermal reactions of Ni(NO3)(2).6H(2)O, disodium fumarate (fum) and 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane (bpe)/1,3-bis(4-pyridyl) propane (bpp) in aqueous-methanol medium yield one 3-D and one 2-D metal-organic hybrid material, [Ni(fum)(bpe)] (1) and [Ni(fum)(bpp)(H2O)] (2), respectively. Complex 1 possesses a novel unprecedented structure, the first example of an "unusual mode" of a five-fold distorted interpenetrated network with metal-ligand linkages where the four six-membered windows in each adamantane-type cage are different. The structural characterization of complex 2 evidences a buckled sheet where nickel ions are in a distorted octahedral geometry, with two carboxylic groups, one acting as a bis-chelate, the other as a bis-monodentate ligand. The metal ion completes the coordination sphere through one water molecule and two bpp nitrogens in cis position. Variable-temperature magnetic measurements of complexes 1 and 2 reveal the existence of very weak antiferromagnetic intramolecular interactions and/or the presence of single-ion zero field splitting (D) of isolated Ni-II ions in both the compounds. Experimentally, both the J parameters are close, comparable and very small. Considering zero-field splitting of Ni-II, the calculated D values are in agreement with values reported in the literature for Ni-II ions. Complex 3, [{Co(phen)}(2)(fum)(2)] (phen=1,10-phenanthroline) is obtained by diffusing methanolic solution of 1,10-phenanthroline on an aqueous layer of disodium fumarate and Co(NO3)(2).6H(2)O. It consists of dimeric Co-II(phen) units, doubly bridged by carboxylate groups in a distorted syn-syn fashion. These fumarate anions act as bis-chelates to form corrugated sheets. The 2D layer has a (4,4) topology, with the nodes represented by the centres of the dimers. The magnetic data were fitted ignoring the very weak coupling through the fumarate pathway and using a dimer model.

Reaction of [M(NCCH3)(4)][PF6] (M = Ag, Cu) with the S2P2Me4 ligand in dichloromethane solution led to substitution of all the nitrile ligands by two molecules of the sulfur ligand, affording the new species [Ag(S2P2Me4)(2)][PF6] (1) and [Cu(S2P2Me4)(2)][PF6] (2). The structures of these complexes were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. showing the expected tetrahedral coordination around each metal. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed the different geometries and energies of the free and coordinated ligand, and provided a very good reproduction of the experimental structures, both for Ag and Cu. The lengths of the S=P bonds are barely affected by coordination, indicating that the pi bond is not important in binding to the metal. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Propylene polymerization using salicyladiminato metal catalalysts has been studied using density functional theory at the B3LYP/LANL2DZ level. In particular, the effects on the reaction mechanisms of changing the metal from Pd(II) to Ni(II) have been investigated. While the reaction mechanisms involving the salicyladiminato Ni(II) catalyst have been found to be similar to those established previously for the salicyladiminato Pd(II) catalyst, the nickel catalyst was found to differentiate the trans-O intermediate from the trans-.N intermediate with an energy difference of 46.63 U mol(-1) significantly more than the palladium catalyst for which the energy difference was calculated as 35.82 kJ mol(-1). The energy difference between the trans-O configuration and the trans-N configuration is decreased significantly when combining a molecule of propylene with the catalyst. For the Ni catalyst, the trans-O isomer is more stable than the trans-N isomer to a greater extent than for Pd, so that the insertion of propylene from 20 is relatively less favoured for Ni than for Pd. It is predicted that the mechanism of isomerization from 20 to 2N through a rotational transition state TS2O2N is more appropriate for the Ni catalyst system. The palladium system shows a larger preference for pi-coordination than its nickel counterpart, although the latter possesses a lower reaction barrier. It was found that the occupation of the trans-O position in the asymmetric salicyladiminato catalyst is also more favored by the alkene as it is by the alkyl so that insertion of the alkene may always start from a particular configuration so that specific products are obtained. Three new ruthenium complexes of the formulae cis-[Ru(PPh3)(2)(BzTscbz)(2)] (1a), [Ru-2(PPh3)(2)(BzTscbz)(4)] (1b) and [Ru(PPh3)(2)(BzTscHbz)(2)](ClO4)(2) (2) [BzTscHbz = 4-(phenyl) thiosemicarbazone of benzaldehyde] have been synthesized and characterized by various physicochemical methods including X-ray structure determinations for 1a and 1b. The relative stabilities of the four-membered versus five-membered chelate rings formed by the deprotonated ligand BzTscbz are discussed on the basis of the experimental results and some semi-empirical as well as DFT calculations. Sixteen neutral mixed ligand thiosemicarbazone complexes of ruthenium having general formula [Ru(PPh3)(2)L-2], where LH = 1-(arylidine)4-aryl thiosemicarbazones, have been synthesized and characterized. All complexes are diamagnetic and hence ruthenium is in the +2 oxidation state (low-spin d(6), S = 0). The complexes show several intense peaks in the visible region due to allowed metal to ligand charge transfer transitions. The structures of four of the complexes have been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and they show that thiosemicarbazone ligands coordinate to the ruthenium center through the hydrazinic nitrogen and sulfur forming four-membered chelate rings with ruthenium in N2S2P2 coordination environment. In dichloromethane solution, the complexes show two quasi-reversible oxidative responses corresponding to loss of electron from HOMO and HOMO - 1. The E-0 values of the above two oxidations shows good linear relationship with Hammett substituents constant (sigma) as well as with the HOMO energy of the molecules calculated by the EHMO method. A DFT calculation on one representative complex suggests that there is appreciable contribution of the sulfur p-orbitals to the HOMO and HOMO - 1. Thus, assignment of the oxidation state of the metal in such complexes must be made with caution. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Reactions of [Mo(eta(3)-C3H5)Br(CO)(2)(NCMe)(2)] with the bidentate nitrogen ligands 2-(2'-pyridyl)imidazole (L1), 2-(2'-pyridyl)benzimidazole (L2), N,N'-bis(2'-pyridinecarboxamido)-1,2-ethane (L3), and 2,2'-bisimidazole (L4) led to the new complexes [Mo(eta(3)-C3H5)Br(CO)(2)(L)] (L = L1, 1; L2, 2; L4, 4) and [{Mo(eta(3)-C3H5) Br(CO)(2)}(2)(mu-L-3)] (3). The reaction of complexes 2 and 3 with Tl[CF3SO3] afforded [Mo(eta(3)-C3H5)(CF3SO3)(CO)(2)(L2)] (2T) and [{Mo(eta(3)-C3H5)(CF3SO3)(CO)(2)}(2)(mu-L-3)] (3T). Complexes 3 and 2T were structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, showing the facial allyl/carbonyls arrangement and the formation of the axial isomer. In 2T, two molecules are assembled in a hydrogen bond dimer. The four complexes 1-4 were tested as precursors in the catalytic epoxidation of cyclooctene and styrene, in the presence of t-butylhydroperoxide (TBHP), with moderate conversions and turnover frequencies for complexes 1-3 and very low ones for 4. The increasing number of N-H groups in the complexes seems to be responsible for the loss of catalytic activity, compared with other related systems. The cytotoxic activities of all the complexes were evaluated against HeLa cells. The results showed that compounds 1,2,4, and 2T exhibited significant activity, complexes 2 and 2T being particularly promising. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

6-[4-(2-Methoxyethoxy)phenyl]fulvene (3a) and 6-(4-[2-(di-methylamino)ethoxy]phenyl)fulvene (3b) were prepared as starting materials for the synthesis of three dofferent classes of titanocenes, which are ansa-titanocenes, diarylmethyl-substituted titanicenes and benzyl-substituted titanocenes and benyzyl-subtituted titanocenes. Because the synthetic possibilities seem to be limited, only ansa-titanocene {1,2-bis(cyclopentadienyl)-1,2-bis[4-(2-methoxyethoxy)phenyl]ethanediyl}titanium dichloride (4a) and benzyl-substituted titanocene bis-{[4-(2-methoxyethoxy)benzyl]cyclopentadienyl}titantium(IV) dichloride (6a) were obtained and characterised. The change in the substitution pattern f the phenyl moiety from an oxygen atom to a nitrogen atom had such a big influence on the reaction that not one compound of the threee titanocene classes could be synthesised, and it was also not possible to obtain diarylmethyl-substituted titanocenes with the use of either of the fulvenes. When benzyl-substituted titanocene 6a was tested agianst pig kidney cells (LLC-PK), an antiproliferative effect that result in an IC50 value of 43 mu m, was observed. This IC50 value is in the lower range of the cytotoxicities evaluated for titanocenes up to now. ansa-Titanocene 4a surprisingly showed, when tested on the same cell line, a proliferative effect together with a fast rate of hydrolysis.

Titanocene compounds are a novel series of agents that exhibit cytotoxic effects in a variety of human cancer cells in vitro and in vivo. In this study, the antiproliferative activity of two titanocenes (Titanocenes X and Y) was evaluated in human epidermoid cancer cells in vitro. Titanocenes X and Y induce apoptotic cell death in epidermoid cancer cells, with IC50 values that are comparable to cisplatin. Characterisation of the cell death pathway induced by titanocene compounds in A431 cells revealed that apoptosis is preceded by cell cycle arrest and the inhibition of cell proliferation. The induction of apoptosis is dependent on the activation of caspase-3 and -7 but not caspase-8. Furthermore, the antitumour activity of Titanocene Y was tested in an A431 xenograft model of epidermoid cancer. Results indicate that Titanocene Y significantly reduced the growth of A431 xenografts with an antitumour effect similar to cisplatin. These results suggest that titanocenes represent a novel series of promising antitumour agents.

Priming effects of cooperation vs. individualism were investigated on changeover speed within a 4 x 100-m relay race. Ten teams of four adult beginner athletes ran two relays, a pretest race and an experimental race 3 weeks later. Just before the experimental race, athletes were primed with either cooperation or individualism through a scrambled-sentence task. Comparing to the pretest performance, cooperation priming improved baton speed in the exchange zone (+30 cm/s). Individualism priming did not impair changeover performance. The boundary conditions of priming effects applied to collective and interdependent tasks are discussed within the implicit coordination framework.
