We aimed to develop site-specific sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) for two estuarine and port zones in Southeastern Brazil (Santos Estuarine System and Paranagua Estuarine System) and three in Southern Spain (Ria of Huelva, Bay of Cadiz, and Bay of Algeciras), and compare these values against national and traditionally used international benchmark values. Site-specific SQGs were derived based on sediment physical-chemical, toxicological, and benthic community data integrated through multivariate analysis. This technique allowed the identification of chemicals of concern and the establishment of effects range correlatively to individual concentrations of contaminants for each site of study. The results revealed that sediments from Santos channel, as well as inner portions of the SES, are considered highly polluted (exceeding SQGs-high) by metals, PAHs and PCBs. High pollution by PAHs and some metals was found in Sao Vicente channel. In PES, sediments from inner portions (proximities of the Ponta do Mix port's terminal and the Port of Paranagua) are highly polluted by metals and PAHs, including one zone inside the limits of an environmental protection area. In Gulf of Cadiz, SQGs exceedences were found in Ria of Huelva (all analysed metals and PAHs), in the surroundings of the Port of CAdiz (Bay of CAdiz) (metals), and in Bay of Algeciras (Ni and PAHs). The site-specific SQGs derived in this study are more restricted than national SQGs applied in Brazil and Spain, as well as international guidelines. This finding confirms the importance of the development of site-specific SQGs to support the characterisation of sediments and dredged material. The use of the same methodology to derive SQGs in Brazilian and Spanish port zones confirmed the applicability of this technique with an international scope and provided a harmonised methodology for site-specific SQGs derivation. Gunshot residue (GSR) is the term used to describe the particles originating from different parts of the firearm and ammunition during the discharge. A fast and practical field tool to detect the presence of GSR can assist law enforcement in the accurate identification of subjects. A novel field sampling device is presented for the first time for the fast detection and quantitation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The capillary microextraction of volatiles (CMV) is a headspace sampling technique that provides fast results (< 2 min. sampling time) and is reported as a versatile and high-efficiency sampling tool. The CMV device can be coupled to a Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) instrument by installation of a thermal separation probe in the injection port of the GC. An analytical method using the CMV device was developed for the detection of 17 compounds commonly found in polluted environments. The acceptability of the CMV as a field sampling method for the detection of VOCs is demonstrated by following the criteria established by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) compendium method TO-17. The CMV device was used, for the first time, for the detection of VOCs on swabs from the hands of shooters, and non-shooters and spent cartridges from different types of ammunition (i.e., pistol, rifle, and shotgun). The proposed method consists in the headspace extraction of VOCs in smokeless powders present in the propellant of ammunition. The sensitivity of this method was demonstrated with method detection limits (MDLs) 4-26 ng for diphenylamine (DPA), nitroglycerine (NG), 2,4-dinitrotoluene (2,4-DNT), and ethyl centralite (EC). In addition, a fast method was developed for the detection of the inorganic components (i.e., Ba, Pb, and Sb) characteristic of GSR presence by Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS). Advantages of LIBS include fast analysis (~ 12 seconds per sample) and good sensitivity, with expected MDLs in the range of 0.1-20 ng for target elements. Statistical analysis of the results using both techniques was performed to determine any correlation between the variables analyzed. This work demonstrates that the information collected from the analysis of organic components has the potential to improve the detection of GSR.

This doctoral dissertation represents a cluster of research activities carried out at the DICAM Department of the University of Bologna during a three-year Ph.D. course. The goal of this research is to show how the development of an interconnected infrastructure network, aimed at promoting accessibility and sustainability of places, is fundamental in a framework of deep urban regeneration. Sustainable urban mobility plays an important role in improving the quality of life of citizens. From an environmental point of view, a sustainable mobility system means reducing fuel discharges and energy waste and, in general, aims to promote low carbon emissions. At the same time, a socially and economically sustainable mobility system should be accessible to everybody and create more job opportunities through better connectivity and mobility. Environmentally friendly means of transport such as non-motorized transport, electric vehicles, and hybrid vehicles play an important role in achieving sustainability but require a planned approach at the local policy level. The aim of this study is to demonstrate that, through a targeted reconnection of road and cycle-pedestrian routes, the quality of life of an urban area subject to degradation can be significantly improved just by increasing its accessibility and sustainability. Starting from a detailed study of the European policies and from the comparison with real similar cases, the case study of the Canal Port of Rimini (Italy) has been analysed within the European project FRAMESPORT. The analysis allowed the elaboration of a multicriterial methodology to get to the definition of a project proposal and of a priority scale of interventions. The applied methodology is a valuable tool that may be used in the future in similar urban contexts. Finally, the whole project was represented by using virtual reality to visually show the difference between the before and after the regeneration intervention.

Este trabalho tem como objetivo identificar a influência atmosférica em escala sinótica sobre o oceano, para eventos extremos de maré meteorológica na costa sudeste brasileira. Para isso foram utilizados dados de elevação do nível do mar do Porto de Santos-SP, campos de vento e pressão em superfície das reanálises do modelo do NCEP abrangendo o Atlântico Sul, no período de 1951 a 1990. Foi possível identificar a variabilidade sazonal e o padrão de evolução dos sistemas atmosféricos associados aos eventos extremos, de grande relevância para aplicações em prognósticos e alertas a autoridades. O outono e inverno apresentaram a maior ocorrência de extremos positivos (40,2 % e 30,8 % respectivamente), enquanto a primavera e o inverno foram as estações com maior número de extremos negativos (47,2 % e 32,3 % respectivamente). Os resultados mostram que os casos mais importantes de sobre-elevação do nível do mar ocorrem com a evolução e persistência de sistemas de baixa pressão sobre o oceano, com ventos de sudoeste acima de 8 m/s, juntamente com o anticiclone da retaguarda posicionado sobre o continente.

Due to the rapid depletion of water resources, water must be used more efficiently in agriculture to maintain current levels of yield in irrigated areas. The efficiency of irrigation systems can be increased by adjusting the amount of water applied to specific conditions of soil and crop, which may vary in a field. Taking into account spatial and temporal variability, it is evident that an equipment capable of providing different irrigation levels is necessary to meet the water requirement of the soil. This work aims to develop and evaluate a flow rate sprinkler to be used in center pivots or linear moving irrigation systems, with potential for utilization in irrigation scheduling. A prototype was developed by duplicating its calibrations, and discharge coefficient adjustment was carried out in the laboratory. To predict the flow rate, a successful model that represented the operation of the flow rate sprinkler was established. The calibration of the flow rate sprinkler prototype showed satisfactory statistical and technical results. Automation of the prototype was achieved by driving a step motor using communication from the parallel port of a microcomputer, which was controlled by a software developed for this purpose. The results were satisfactory and technically feasible.

Vic Slater and police during the Youth Campaign against Conscription, Brisbane, Australia in 1965. Victor Charles Slater (now retired) was born in Queensland in March 1944 the only child of Jim and Joyce Slater, card carrying members of the Communist Party of Australia. Vic's mother, Joyce, joined up in Great Britain. Vic too joined the party in 1962 after a stint as president of the Eureka Youth League. He stayed with the more broad left CPA when it split from the hardline Stalinists after the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968. Vic joined the Waterside Workers' Federation before his 21st birthday in January 1965, one of 300 casual workers recruited to the Port of Brisbane that year. On the wharves he soon earned the nickname 'the Professor' arriving on the job each day bespectacled and carrying a briefcase heavy with reading matter on world politics and economics - a walking encyclopaedia of information. O risco associado a um navio em manobra pode ser avaliado pela probabilidade do movimento vertical de um ponto do navio ultrapassar um determinado limiar pré-definido. Essa excedência pode originar danos tanto no próprio navio como nas estruturas portuárias envolventes. Este trabalho surge no seguimento de um estudo efectuado no Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil (LNEC), no qual foi desenvolvido um conjunto de ferramentas de avaliação da função resposta do navio quando sujeito à agitação marítima e, partindo dessas ferramentas, foi obtido um procedimento para determinação do espectro dos movimentos verticais de um ponto de um navio parado sujeito àquele estado de agitação (Rodrigues, 2010). No presente estudo, estendeu-se esse procedimento de modo a avaliar a influência da velocidade de avanço do navio no espectro dos movimentos verticais do mesmo. O percurso de entrada do “N/M Fernão Gomes” no porto da Praia da Vitória foi o caso de estudo considerado. A agitação marítima incidente no navio cobriu o período de Janeiro de 2009 a Dezembro de 2010 e foi obtida com base no modelo previsão de escala regional (WAVEWATCH III) e posteriormente transferida para o interior do porto com o recurso a modelos numéricos de propagação de ondas (SWAN e DREAMS). Foi também assumido que a altura do movimento vertical do navio segue uma distribuição de Rayleigh, a qual possibilita a determinação da altura significativa desse movimento vertical, bem como a implementação de um procedimento para determinar a probabilidade de a altura do movimento vertical do navio não exceder um limiar pré-definido e consequentemente mostrar, através da análise dos resultados, a influência da velocidade de avanço do navio. Da análise dos resultados concluiu-se que a velocidade tem uma influência significativa nos resultados. No final avaliou-se a contribuição dos resultados anteriormente determinados, para a análise do risco associado aos movimentos verticais do navio quando em manobra no porto em estudo.

Infraestrutura com mais de um século de história, o Porto de Leixões encontra-se em fase de renovação com a criação de um emblemático Edifício de Terminal de Cruzeiros. Obra de arquitetura arrojada, o edifício é implantado em condições geológico-geotécnicas adversas e na convivência com o efeito da água do mar e das respetivas marés. O presente relatório é relativo a um Estágio realizado na obra numa fase de execução dos trabalhos de fundações e de contenções periféricas (ensecadeira). Apresentam-se as soluções sugeridas em projeto, as soluções apresentadas inicialmente pelo construtor e as alternativas a estas, propostas já durante a obra. Descrevem-se as diferentes soluções, identificando os equipamentos, recursos humanos e procedimentos envolvidos. Comparam-se os respetivos rendimentos e custos. Apresenta-se o Plano de Instrumentação e de Monitorização implementado em obra. Descreve-se em pormenor o trabalho realizado pelo estagiário, em obra, no decurso do estágio.

S’ha estudiat la bioacumulació de contaminants orgànics persistents en el múscul d’una espècie de peix en dos punts del litoral català: al Port de Barcelona i a la costa de Blanes. Citharus linguatula ha estat escollida per les seves característiques d’hàbitats (està més exposada a la contaminació al ser una espècie bentònica). La metodologia emprada consisteix en la homogeneïtzació amb sulfat de sodi i una extracció assistida amb microones amb n-hexà-acetona(1:1 v/v) durant 20 minuts. Els extractes es netegen i es fraccionen amb una columna cromatogràfica d’alúmina que permet la separació dels extractes en dos fraccions: un amb la majoria dels compostos organoclorats (hexaclorbenzè, DDTs, ciclodiens clorats i policlorbifenils) i l’altre amb els isòmers hexaclorciclohexans i els PAHs. Aquestes dos fraccions són posteriorment analitzades en el GC-MS. S’ha pogut corroborar l’elevada presència de PCBs a Barcelona, així com que en aquest punt de mostreig les espècies estan més exposades a la contaminació per organoclorats. S’ha identificat la presència de DDTs en els dos llocs estudiats. Pel que fa als PAHs s’ha pogut observar que a Barcelona també hi ha més presència d’aquests. Cal destacar que la concentració obtinguda dels compostos no es pot donar com a vàlida per l’existència d’indicis d’errors experimentals o d’injecció.

Els ports esportius a nivell català han augmentat considerablement a causa de la creixent afició a la navegació i els esports nàutics. L’increment de la demanda d’amarratges al port i la conseqüent concentració d’iots, ha implicat la necessitat d’un estudi dels seus impactes potencials. El Port Garraf té un impacte més reduït degut a que prioritzen les embarcacions de vela, en canvi pel que fa al Port d’Aiguadolç i Port Ginesta la proporció d’embarcacions a motor és superior, per tant tindran un consum més elevat de combustible. Pel que fa a residus especials, concretament olis, els tres ports tenen un impacte sever per la difícil recuperació del medi en cas d’accident, encara que hi ha una bona gestió en els ports. Per acabar el Port d’Aiguadolç és el que té un consum d’aigua superior. Segons la comparació que s’ha realitzat dels diferents fluxos, es pot concloure que el port Ginesta és el més sostenible. Gràcies a la bona gestió portuària i a la sensibilització dels usuaris del port, tot i tenir major superfície i més quantitat d’embarcacions, aquest port és el que té menors impactes potencials.

Background: HIV vaccine-candidates based on rare adenovirus serotypes such as Ad26 and Ad35 vectors, and poxvirus vectors are important components of future promising vaccine regimens that in the near future hopefully will move into a number of efficacy clinical trials in combination with protein vaccines. For these reasons, it is important to comprehensively characterize the vaccine-induced immune responses in different anatomical compartments and particularly at mucosal sites which represent the primary port of entry for HIV.Methods: In the present study, we have investigated the anatomic distribution in blood and gut mucosal tissues (rectum and ileum) of memory poxvirus-specific CD4 and CD8 T cells in subjects vaccinated with smallpox and compared with vector (NYVAC)-specific and HIV insert-specific T-cell responses induced by an experimental DNA-C/NYVAC-C vaccine regimen.Results: Smallpox-specific CD4 T-cell responses were present in the blood of 52% of subject studied, while Smallpox-specific CD8 T cells were rarely detected (12%). With one exception, Smallpoxspecific T cells were not measurable in gut tissues. Interestingly, NYVAC vector-specific and HIV-specific CD4 and CD8 T-cell responses were detected in almost 100% of the subjects immunized with DNA-C/NYVAC-C in blood and gut tissues. The large majority (83%) of NYVAC-specific CD4 T cells expressed a4b7 integrins and the HIV co-receptor CCR5.Conclusion: These results demonstrate that the experimental DNA-C/NYVAC-C HIV vaccine regimen induces the homing of potentially protective HIV-specific CD4 and CD8 T cells in the gut, the port of entry of HIV and one of the major sites for HIV spreading and depletion of CD4 T cells.
