Nanocrystalline ZrO2-12 mol % CeO2 powders were synthesized using a polymeric precursor method based on the Pechini process. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns showed that the method was effective to synthesize tetragonal zirconia single-phase. The mean crystallite size attained ranges from 6 to 15 nm. The BET surface areas were relatively high reaching 97 m(2)/g. Studies by nitrogen adsorption/desorption on powders, dilatometry of the compacts, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of the powders, were also developed to verify the particles agglomeration state. Both citric acid : ethylene glycol ratio and calcination temperature affected the powder morphology, which influenced the sinterability and microstructure of the sintered material, as showed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In this paper 4.5SiO(2)-3Al(2)O(3-x)Nb(2)O(5)-2CaO powders have been synthesized using a chemical process the Polymeric Precursor Method. The process of glass formation has been investigated by XRD and DTA, the results confirm that the prepared powders are glasses. Experimental data show that amount of Nb2O5 had a considerable effect on the T-g values. The structures of glasses prepared. have been determined by Si-29 and Al-27 MAS NMR and the results indicated that the network is formed by SiO4 and AlO4 tetrahedral linked and probably Si-O-Nb bonds are present in the vitreous network. Small-angle X-ray scattering study of sol-gel-derived siloxane-PEG and siloxane-PPG hybrid materials
Resumo:
Hybrid organic-inorganic two-phase nanocomposites of siloxane-poly(ethylene glycol) (SiO3/2-PEG) and siloxane-poly(propylene glycol) (SiO3/2-PPG) have been obtained by the sol-gel process. In these composites, nanometric siloxane heterogeneities are embedded in a polymeric matrix with covalent bonds in the interfaces. The structure of these materials was investigated in samples with different molecular weights of the polymer using the smalt-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) technique. The SAXS spectra exhibit a well-defined peak that was attributed to the existence of a strong spatial correlation of siloxane clusters. LiClO4-doped siloxane-PEG and siloxane-PPG hybrids, which exhibit good ionic conduction properties, have also been studied as a function of the lithium concentration [O]/[Li], O being the oxygens of ether type. SAXS results allowed us to establish a structural model for these materials for different basic compositions and a varying [Li] content. The conclusion is consistent with that deduced from ionic conductivity measurements that exhibit a maximum for [O]/[Li] =15.

Reactive ZrxTi1-xO4 (x=0.65, 0.50 and 0.35) powder was prepared by the polymeric precursor method. Studies by X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen adsorption/desorption, and thermogravimetric analysis (TG) showed that powders with high crystallinity (>90%) and high surface areas (>40 m(2)/g) are obtained after calcination at 700 degrees C for 3 h. Infrared spectroscopy and XRD results showed that these titanates nucleate from the amorphous phase with no intermediate phases, at low temperature (450 degrees C).

Pure and niobium doped bismuth titanate ceramics (Bi4Ti3-xNbxO12 (BTN)), with x ranging from 0 to 0.4 were prepared by the polymeric precursor method. X-ray diffraction showed no secondary phases. Increasing niobium content leads to more resistive ceramics. The shape and size of the grains are strongly influenced by the niobiurn added to the system. The dielectric constant is not influenced by the niobium addition while hysteresis loops are significantly narrowed. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V All rights reserved.

This work reports on the preparation, structural and luminescent studies of nanosized up-converter phosphors Y2O2S:Yb(4%), Er(0.1%) and Y2O2S:Yb(4%), Tm(0.1%),both from polymeric and basic carbonate precursors. The precursors were submitted to a sulphuration process that was previously developed for oxysulfide preparation from basic carbonate. From XRD data, all phosphors presented the oxysulfide phase and the mean crystallite size estimated from the Scherrer formula in the range of 15-20 nm. Polymeric precursor leads to the smallest crystallite size independent on the doping ion. SEM and TEM results confirmed that basic carbonate leads to spherical particles with narrow size distribution and mean diameter of 150 nm, and polymeric precursor smaller spherical particles with diameter between 20 and 40 nm. Up-conversion studies under 980 nm laser excitation showed that Er-doped phosphors present strong green emission related to H-2(11/2), S-4(3/2) --> I-4(15/2) Er transitions as well as the red ones, F-4(9/2) --> I-4(15/2). Tm-doped samples show strong blue emission assigned to (1)G(4) --> H-3(6) and also the red ones, related to (1)G(4) --> F-3(4). Therefore, the sulphuration method was successfully applied to prepare nanosized and nanostructured blue and green up-converter oxysulfide phosphors starting from basic carbonate and polymeric precursors. BaxSr1-xTiO3 (x = 0.6) (BST) thin films were successfully prepared on a Pt(111)/TiO2/SiO2/Si(100) substrate by spin coating, using the polymeric precursor method. BST films with a perovskite single phase were obtained after heat treatment at 700 degrees C. The multilayer BST thin films had a granular structure will a grain size of approximately 60 nm. A 480-nm-thick film was obtained by carrying out five cycles of the spin-coating/heating process. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy analyses showed that the thin films had a smooth, dense, crack-free surface with low surface roughness (3.6 nm). At room temperature and at a frequency of 100 kHz, the dielectric constant and the dissipation factor were, respectively, 748 and 0.042. The high dielectric constant value was due to the high microstructural quality and chemical homogeneity of the thin films obtained by the polymeric precursor method.

Pb1- xCaxTiO3 thin films with x = 0.24 composition were prepared by the polymeric precursor method on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates. The surface morphology and crystal structure, and the ferroelectric and dielectric properties of the films were investigated. X-ray diffraction patterns of the films revealed their polycrystalline nature. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) analyses showed the surface of these thin films to be smooth, dense and crack-free with low surface roughness. The multilayer Pb1-xCaxTO3 thin films were granular in structure with a grain size of approximately 60-70 nm. The dielectric constant and dissipation factor were, respectively, 174 and 0.04 at a 1 kHz frequency. The 600-nm thick film showed a current density leakage in the order of 10(-7) A/cm(2) in an electric field of about 51 kV/cm. The C-V characteristics of perovskite thin films showed normal ferroelectric behavior. The remanent polarization and coercive field for the deposited films were 15 muC/cm(2) and 150 kV/cm, respectively. (C) 2001 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

In this work we report the synthesis procedure, crystallographic, structural and magnetic properties of the Li2ZnTi3O8 spinel obtained using a modified polymeric precursor method. This synthesis method generates very reactive and property-controlled nanoparticles. The samples were characterized using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) associated to the Rietveld refinement method, thermogravimetric analysis (TG), specific surface area, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The phase formation temperature of the lithium zinc titanate spinel was observed to decrease due to the homogeneity and highly controlled nanometric particle size. Pure and lanthanum-doped Bi4Ti3O12 thin films were deposited on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrate using a polymeric precursor solution. The spin-coated films were specular and crack-free and crystalline after annealing at 700 degreesC for 2 h. Crystallinity and morphological evaluation were examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Multilayered films obtained using the intermediate-crystalline layer route present a dense microstructure with spherical grains. Films obtained using the intermediate-amorphous layer, present elongated grains around 250 nm in size. The dielectric and ferroelectric properties of the lanthanum-doped Bi4Ti3O12 films are strongly affected by the crystallization route. The hysteresis loops are fully saturated with a remnant polarization and drive voltage of the films, heat-treated by the intermediate-crystalline (P-r = 20.2 muC/cm(2) and V = 1.35 V) and for the film heat-treated by amorphous route (P-r = 22.4 muC/cm(2) and V = 2.99 V). Thin films of potassium niobate were deposited on MgO (100) substrates by the polymeric precursor method and annealing in static air at 600 degreesC for 20 h. The obtained films were characterized by X-ray diffraction, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and the prism coupling method. The phi-scan diffraction evidenced the growth of the films with fourfold symmetry. AFM study shows that the films are homogeneous, dense and present a smooth surface. The refractive index and optical losses were strongly influenced by the degree of crystallinity. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Lanthanum-doped Bi4Ti3O12 thin films (BLT) were deposited on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates using a polymeric precursor solution. The spin-coated films were specular, crack-free and crystalline after annealing at 700 degrees C for 2 h. Crystallinity and morphological evaluation were examined by X ray diffraction (YRD) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The stability of the formed complex is of extreme importance for the formation of the perovskite phase. Films obtained from acid pH solution present elongated grains around 200 ran in size, whereas films obtained from basic solution present a dense microstructure with spherical grains (100 nm). The dielectric and ferroelectric properties of the BLT films are strongly affected by the solution pH. The hysteresis loops are fully saturated with a remnant polarization and coercive voltage of P-r=20.2 mu C/cm(2) and V-c = 1.35 V and P-r= 15 mu C/cm(2) and V-c = 1.69 V for the films obtained from basic and acid solutions, respectively. The polymeric precursor method was employed in the preparation of PZT thin films on Pt(111)Ti/SiO2/Si(100) substrates. X-ray diffraction patterns revealed the polycrystalline nature of the PZT (53:47) thin films, which had a granular structure and a grain size of approximately 70 nm. A 350-nm thick film was obtained by running three cycles of the dip-coating/heating process. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) analyses showed the surface of these thin films to be smooth, dense and crack-free with low surface roughness (= 2.0 nm). The PZT (53:47) thin films annealed at 700 degreesC showed a well-saturated hysteresis loop. The C-V curves of perovskite thin film displayed normal ferroelectric behavior, while the remanent polarization (2P(r)) and coercive field (E-e) of the film deposited and measured at room temperature were 40 muC/cm(2) and 110 kV/cm, respectively. Superconductor films of the BSCCO system have been grown by dip coating technique with good success. The chemical method allows us to grow high temperature superconductor thin films to get better control of stoichiometry, large areas and is cheaper than other methods. There is a great technological interest in growth oriented superconductor films due anisotropic characteristics of superconductor materials of high critical temperature, specifically the cuprates, as we know that the orientation may increase the electrical transport properties. Based on this, the polymeric precursor method has been used to obtain thin films of the BSCCO system. In this work we have applied that method together with the deposition technique known as dip coating to obtain Bi-based superconductor thin films, specifically, Bi1.6Pb0.4Sr2.0C2.0Cu3.0Ox+8, also known as 2223 phase with a critical temperature around 110 K. The films with multilayers have been grown on crystalline substrates of LaAlO3 and orientated (100) after being heat treated around 790 degrees C - 820 degrees C in lapse time of 1 hour in a controlled atmosphere. XRD measurements have shown the presence of a crystalline phase 2212 with a critical temperature around 85 K with (001) orientation, as well as a small fraction of 2223 phase. SEM has shown a low uniformity and some cracks that maybe related to the applied heat treatment. WDS has also been used to study the films composition. Different heat treatments have been used with the aim to increase the percentage of 2223 phase. Measurements of resistivity confirmed the presence of at least two crystalline phases, 2212 and 2223, with T-c around 85 K and 110 K, respectively.

New silica-polypropyleneglycol ormosils (organically modified silicates) with covalent bends between the organic (polymer) and inorganic (silica) phases have been prepared by the sol-gel process. Their structural evolution during sol formation, sol-gel transition, gel aging and drying has been studied in situ by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The experimental SAXS curves corresponding to sols and gels exhibit features expected from fractal objects. Clusters of size around 55 Angstrom with an initial fractal dimension D = 2.4 are formed in the sol. They are constituted of small primary silica particles chemically crosslinked at the end of the polymer chains. A strong liquid-like spatial correlation between the silica particles develops during drying due to the shrinkage of the polymeric network induced by water and ethanol evaporation. The continuous increase in SAXS intensity during drying, while the interparticle distance remains constant, is a consequence of the progressive growth of the dry fraction of the total volume. After drying, the gel structure consists of a rather compact arrangement of silica particles embedded in the polypropyleneglycol matrix.
