While the adsorption of dioxygen at a clean Ni(110) surface gives rise to two O(1s) features at 531 and 530 eV assigned to O-(a) and O2-(a) type species respectively, coadsorption of dioxygen and water mixtures result in the additional formation of hydroxyl species characterized by an O(1s) peak at 532.3 eV. The latter is attributed to the oxygen induced dissociation of water via a low energy pathway involving the O-(a)-type species. The proportions of the O-(a) and the hydroxyl species are greater for small O-2/H2O ratios and lower temperatures (120 K). With increase in temperature, the relative surface concentrations of the O-(a) and the hydroxyl species decrease while there is an increase in the concentration of the oxidic O2-(a) species. Thus, the surface concentrations of both the hydroxyl and the O2-(a) species depend critically on the presence of O- type species. Above 300K the surface chemistry in the main involves the conversion of O- to O2- species via the hydroxyl species.

Adsorption of dioxygen at clean Ni(110) and Ni(100) surfaces gives rise to two prominent features in the O(1s) spectra at 530 and 531 eV due to O2- and O- type species, respectively. Interaction of ammonia with a Ni(100)-O surface where theta(oxygen) < 0.1 ML favors the dissociation of NH3 giving NHn, (n = 1, 2) and N(a) species. This is accompanied by a decrease in the intensity of the 531 eV feature. On the other hand. a Ni(100)-O surface where the oxygen species are mainly of the O2- type is unreactive, Coadsorption studies of NH3-O-2 mixtures show that at Ni(110) surfaces the uptake of both oxygen and ammonia increase with the proportion of oxygen in the NH3-O-2 mixture. The surface concentrations of the O- species and the NHn species also increase with the increase in the O-2/NH3 ratio while the slope of the plot of sigma(N) versus sigma(O-) is around unity. The results demonstrate the high surface reactivity of the O- species and its role in the dissociation of ammonia. Based on these observations, the possibility of the formation of a surface complex between ammonia and oxygen (specifically O-) is suggested. Results from vibrational spectroscopic studies of the coadsorption of NH3-O-2 mixtures are consistent with those from core-level spectroscopic studies.

A long-standing and important problem in glass science has been carrier-type reversal (CTR) in semiconducting glasses. This phenomenon is exhibited by Pb-Ge-Se glasses also. It has been addressed here by carrying out detailed electrical, thermal, and spectroscopic investigations. PbxGe42-xSe58 (x = 0-20) glasses were prepared by a two stage melt-quenching process and characterized using x-ray diffraction, high-resolution electron microscropy, and energy dispersive analysis of x-rays. Thermoelectric power and high-pressure electrical resistivity have been measured. IR, Raman, and X-ray adsorption near edge structure spectroscopies have been used for examining the glass structures as well as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) for studying the thermal properties. A structural model based on the chemical nature of the constituents has been proposed to account for the observed properties of these glasses. Effect of Pb incorporation on local structures and qualitative consequences on the energy band structures of Ge-Se glasses has been considered. The p -->n transition has been attributed to the energetic disposition of the sp(3)d(2) band of Pb atoms, which is located closely above the lone pair band of selenium. This feature makes Pb unique in the context of p -->n transition of chalcogenide glasses. The model can be extended successfully to account for the CTR behavior observed in Bi containing chalcogenide glasses also.

The electronic structures of pyrite-type transition-metal chalcogenides MS2-xSex (M = Fe, Co, Ni) has been investigated by photoemission and inverse-photoemission spectroscopy. The valence-band spectrum of ferromagnetic CoS2 does not show exchange splitting of the Co 3d peak, in disagreement with band-structure calculations. High-resolution photoemission spectra of NiS1.55Se0.45 shows spectral weight transfer from low (similar or equal to 50 meV) to high (0.2-0.5 eV) binding energies, in going from the metallic to the insulating phase.

In this paper we propose that the compressive tidal held in the centers of flat-core early-type galaxies and ultraluminous galaxies compresses molecular clouds producing dense gas observed in the centers of these galaxies. The effect of galactic tidal fields is usually considered disruptive in the literature. However, for some galaxies, the mass profile flattens toward the center and the resulting galactic tidal field is not disruptive, but instead it is compressive within the flat-core region. We have used the virial theorem to determine the minimum density of a molecular cloud to be stable and gravitationally bound within the tidally compressive region of a galaxy. We have applied the mechanism to determine the mean molecular cloud densities in the centers of a sample of flat-core, early-type galaxies and ultraluminous galaxies. For early-type galaxies with a core-type luminosity profile, the tidal held of the galaxy is compressive within half the core radius. We have calculated the mean gas densities for molecular gas in a sample of early-type galaxies which have already been detected in CO emission, and we obtain mean densities of [n] similar to 10(3)-10(6) cm(-3) within the central 100 pc radius. We also use our model to calculate the molecular cloud densities in the inner few hundred parsecs of a sample of ultraluminous galaxies. From the observed rotation curves of these galaxies we show that they have a compressive core within their nuclear region. Our model predicts minimum molecular gas densities in the range 10(2)-10(4) cm(-3) in the nuclear gas disks; the smaller values are applicable typically for galaxies with larger core radii. The resulting density values agree well with the observed range. Also, for large core radii, even fairly low-density gas (similar to 10(2) cm(-3)) can remain bound and stable close to the galactic center.

The structure of a type I langbeinite, Rb2Cd2(SO4)(3), displays three different phases, cubic with a = 10.378(5) Angstrom (space group P2(1)3) at room temperature, monoclinic at 120 K with a = 10.328(3), b = 10.322(3), c = 10.325(3) Angstrom, beta = 89.975(1)degrees (space group P2(1)), and orthorhombic at 85 K with a = 10.319(2), b = 10.321(2), c = 10.320(2) Angstrom (space group P2(1)2(1)2(1)), respectively. Precise single-crystal analyses of these phases indicate that Rb2Cd2(SO4)(3) distorts initially from cubic to monoclinic upon cooling followed by a significant reorientation of the SO4 tetrahedra, resulting in an orthorhombic symmetry upon further cooling. The three structures have been established unequivocally using the same crystal. There is no indication of the formation of an intermediate triclinic phase or any lattice disorder as conjectured in several earlier reports on compounds belonging to the type I langbeinite. The bond valence sum analyses of the coordination around the Rb sites indicate asymmetry in the bond strengths which could be the driving force of the ferroelectric behavior in these materials.

‘Best’ solutions for the shock-structure problem are obtained by solving the Boltzmann equation for a rigid sphere gas by applying minimum error criteria on the Mott-Smith ansatz. The use of two such criteria minimizing respectively the local and total errors, as well as independent computations of the remaining error, establish the high accuracy of the solutions, although it is shown that the Mott-Smith distribution is not an exact solution of the Boltzmann equation even at infinite Mach number. The minimum local error method is found to be particularly simple and efficient. Adopting the present solutions as the standard of comparison, it is found that the widely used v2x-moment solutions can be as much as a third in error, but that results based on Rosen's method provide good approximations. Finally, it is shown that if the Maxwell mean free path on the hot side of the shock is chosen as the scaling length, the value of the density-slope shock thickness is relatively insensitive to the intermolecular potential. A comparison is made on this basis of present results with experiment, and very satisfactory quantitative agreement is obtained.

In this paper we propose a concept and report experimental results based on a circular array of Piezoelectric Wafer Active Sensors (PWASs) for rapid localization and parametric identification of corrosion type damage in metallic plates. Implementation of this circular array of PWASs combines the use of ultrasonic Lamb wave propagation technique and an algorithm based on symmetry breaking in the signal pattern to locate and monitor the growth of a corrosion pit on a metallic plate. Wavelet time-frequency maps of the sensor signals are employed to obtain an insight regarding the effect of corrosion growth on the Lamb wave transmission in time-frequency scale. We present here a method to eliminate the time scale, which helps in identifying easily the signature of damage in the measured signals. The proposed method becomes useful in determining the approximate location of the damage with respect to the location of three neighboring sensors in the circular array. A cumulative damage index is computed from the wavelet coefficients for varying damage sizes and the results appear promising. Damage index is plotted against the damage parameters for frequency sweep of the excitation signal (a windowed sine signal). Results of corrosion damage are compared with circular holes of various sizes to demonstrate the applicability of present method to different types of damage. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. A methodology termed the “filtered density function” (FDF) is developed and implemented for large eddy simulation (LES) of chemically reacting turbulent flows. In this methodology, the effects of the unresolved scalar fluctuations are taken into account by considering the probability density function (PDF) of subgrid scale (SGS) scalar quantities. A transport equation is derived for the FDF in which the effect of chemical reactions appears in a closed form. The influences of scalar mixing and convection within the subgrid are modeled. The FDF transport equation is solved numerically via a Lagrangian Monte Carlo scheme in which the solutions of the equivalent stochastic differential equations (SDEs) are obtained. These solutions preserve the Itô-Gikhman nature of the SDEs. The consistency of the FDF approach, the convergence of its Monte Carlo solution and the performance of the closures employed in the FDF transport equation are assessed by comparisons with results obtained by direct numerical simulation (DNS) and by conventional LES procedures in which the first two SGS scalar moments are obtained by a finite difference method (LES-FD). These comparative assessments are conducted by implementations of all three schemes (FDF, DNS and LES-FD) in a temporally developing mixing layer and a spatially developing planar jet under both non-reacting and reacting conditions. In non-reacting flows, the Monte Carlo solution of the FDF yields results similar to those via LES-FD. The advantage of the FDF is demonstrated by its use in reacting flows. In the absence of a closure for the SGS scalar fluctuations, the LES-FD results are significantly different from those based on DNS. The FDF results show a much closer agreement with filtered DNS results. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

The reaction of [Cp*TaCl(4)], 1 (Cp* = eta(5)-C(5)Me(5)), with [LiBH(4)center dot THF] at -78 degrees C, followed by thermolysis in the presence of excess [BH(3)center dot THF], results in the formation of the oxatantalaborane cluster [(Cp*Ta)(2)B(4)H(10)O], 2 in moderate yield. Compound 2 is a notable example of an oxatantalaborane cluster where oxygen is contiguously bound to both the metal and boron. Upon availability of 2, a room temperature reaction was performed with [Fe(2)(CO)(9)], which led to the isolation of [(Cp*Ta)(2)B(2)H(4)O{H(2)Fe(2)(CO)(6)BH} ] 3. Compound 3 is an unusual heterometallic boride cluster in which the [Ta(2)Fe(2)] atoms define a butterfly framework with one boron atom lying in a semi-interstitial position. Likewise, the diselenamolybdaborane, [(Cp*Mo)(2)B(4)H(4)Se(2)], 4 was treated with an excess of [Fe(2)(CO)(9)] to afford the heterometallic boride cluster [(Cp*MoSe)(2)Fe(6)(CO)(13)B(2)(BH)(2)], 5. The cluster core of 5 consists of a cubane [Mo(2)Se(2)Fe(2)B(2)] and a tricapped trigonal prism [Fe(6)B(3)] fused together with four atoms held in common between the two subclusters. In the tricapped trigonal prism subunit, one of the boron atoms is completely encapsulated and bonded to six iron and two boron atoms. Compounds 2, 3, and 5 have been characterized by mass spectrometry, IR, (1)H, (11)B, (13)C NMR spectroscopy, and the geometric structures were unequivocally established by crystallographic analysis. The density functional theory calculations yielded geometries that are in close agreement with the observed structures. Furthermore, the calculated (11)B NMR chemical shifts also support the structural characterization of the compounds. Natural bond order analysis and Wiberg bond indices are used to gain insight into the bonding patterns of the observed geometries of 2, 3, and 5.

A solid oxide galvanic cell and a gas-solid (View the MathML source) equilibration technique have been used to measure the activities of the solutes in the α-solid solutions of silver with indium and tin. The results are consistent with the information now available for the corresponding liquid alloys, the phase diagram and the heats of mixing of the solid alloy. When the results of this study are taken together with published data for the α-solid solutions in Ag + Cd system, it is found that the variation of the excess partial free energy of the solute with mole fraction can be correlated to the electron/atom ratio. The significant thennodynamic parameter that explains the Hume-Rothery findings in these alloys appears to be the rate of change of the excess partial free energy with composition near the phase boundary, and this in turn reflects the value of the solute-solute interaction energy.

Thin foils of Cu, Au and Cu + Au alloys embedded in indium sesquioxide were equilibrated with controlled streams of CO-CO2 mixtures. The equilibrium concentrations of indium in the foils were determined by neutron activation analysis. The corresponding chemical potentials of indium were calculated from the standard free energies of formation of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and indium oxide. It was found that the size difference between the solute and the solvent does not make significant contributions to the solute—solute interaction energy in the α-phase. The chemical potential of indium at one at.% concentration is 8.6 Kcals more negative in gold than in copper at 900°K. The variation of this chemical potential with alloy composition in Cu + Au system was in good agreement with Alcock and Richardson's quasichemical equation. The agreement is strengthened by the accurate knowledge of the co-ordination number in these substitutional solid solutions from X-ray diffraction studies.
