The emergence of smartphones with Wireless LAN (WiFi) network interfaces brought new challenges to application developers. The expected increase of users connectivity will impact their expectations for example on the performance of background applications. Unfortunately, the number and breadth of the studies on the new patterns of user mobility and connectivity that result from the emergence of smartphones is still insufficient to support this claim. This paper contributes with preliminary results on a large scale study of the usage pattern of about 49000 devices and 31000 users who accessed at least one access point of the eduroam WiFi network on the campuses of the Lisbon Polytechnic Institute. Results confirm that the increasing number of smartphones resulted in significant changes to the pattern of use, with impact on the amount of traffic and users connection time.

Os avanços nas Interfaces Cérebro-máquina, resultantes dos avanços no tratamento de sinal e da inteligência artificial, estão a permitir-nos aceder à atividade cerebral, descodificá-la, e usála para comandar dispositivos, sejam eles braços artificiais ou computadores. Isto é muito mais importante quando os utilizadores são pessoas que perderam a capacidade de comunicar, embora mantenham as suas capacidades cognitivas intactas. O caso mais extremo desta situação é o das pessoas afetadas pela Síndrome de Encarceramento. Este trabalho pretende contribuir para a melhoria da qualidade de vida das pessoas afetadas por esta síndrome, disponibilizando-lhes um meio de comunicação adaptado às suas limitações. É essencialmente um estudo de usabilidade aplicada a um tipo de utilizador extremamente diminuído na sua capacidade de interação. Nesta investigação começamos por compreender a Síndrome de Encarceramento e as limitações e capacidades das pessoas afetadas por ela. Abordamos a neuroplasticidade, o que é, e em que medida é importante para a utilização das Interfaces Cérebro-máquina. Analisamos o funcionamento destas interfaces, e os fundamentos científicos que o suportam. Finalmente, com todo este conhecimento em mãos, investigamos e desenvolvemos métodos que nos permitissem otimizar as limitadas capacidades do utilizador na sua interação com o sistema, minimizando o esforço e maximizando o desempenho. Foi para o efeito desenhado e implementado um protótipo que nos permitisse validar as soluções encontradas.

The S100 proteins are 10-12 kDa EF-hand proteins that act as central regulators in a multitude of cellular processes including cell survival, proliferation, differentiation and motility. Consequently, many S100 proteins are implicated and display marked changes in their expression levels in many types of cancer, neurodegenerative disorders, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. The structure and function of S100 proteins are modulated by metal ions via Ca2+ binding through EF-hand motifs and binding of Zn2+ and Cu2+ at additional sites, usually at the homodimer interfaces. Ca2+ binding modulates S100 conformational opening and thus promotes and affects the interaction with p53, the receptor for advanced glycation endproducts and Toll-like receptor 4, among many others. Structural plasticity also occurs at the quaternary level, where several S100 proteins self-assemble into multiple oligomeric states, many being functionally relevant. Recently, we have found that the S100A8/A9 proteins are involved in amyloidogenic processes in corpora amylacea of prostate cancer patients, and undergo metal-mediated amyloid oligomerization and fibrillation in vitro. Here we review the unique chemical and structural properties of S100 proteins that underlie the conformational changes resulting in their oligomerization upon metal ion binding and ultimately in functional control. The possibility that S100 proteins have intrinsic amyloid-forming capacity is also addressed, as well as the hypothesis that amyloid self-assemblies may, under particular physiological conditions, affect the S100 functions within the cellular milieu.

Uma interface cérebro-computador (BCI) não é mais do que um dispositivo que lê e analisa ondas cerebrais e as converte em ações sobre um computador. Com a evolução das BCI e a possibilidade de acesso às mesmas por parte do público começou a ser possível o uso de BCIs para fins lúdicos. Nesse sentido nesta tese foi feito um estudo sobre interfaces cérebro-computador, o que são, que tipos de BCI existem, o seu uso para entretenimento, as suas limitações e o futuro deste tipo de interfaces. Foi ainda criado um software lúdico controlado por BCI (Emotiv EPOC) que é composto por um jogo tipo Pong e um reprodutor de música. O reprodutor de música através de BCI classifica e recomenda músicas ao utilizador. Com esta tese foi possível chegar à conclusão que é possível utilizar BCI para entretenimento (jogos e recomendação de conteúdos) apesar de se ter verificado que para jogos os dispositivos tradicionais de controlo (rato e teclado) ainda têm uma precisão muito superior.

Tissue-to-tissue interfaces are commonly present in all tissues exhibiting structural, biological and chemical gradients serving a wide range of physiological functions. These interfaces are responsible for mediation of load transfer between two adjacent tissues. They are also important structures in sustaining the cellular communications to retain tissueâ s functional integration and homeostasis. [1] All cells have the capacity to sense and respond to physical and chemical stimulus and when cultured in three-dimensional (3D) environments they tend to perform their function better than in two-dimensional (2D) environments. Spatial and temporal 3D gradient hydrogels better resemble the natural environment of cells in mimicking their extracellular matrix. [2] In this study we hypothesize that differential functional properties can be engineered by modulation of macromolecule gradients in a cell seeded threedimensional hydrogel system. Specifically, differential paracrine secretory profiles can be engineered using human Bone Marrow Stem Cells (hBMSCâ s). Hence, the specific objectives of this study are to: assemble the macromolecular gradient hydrogels to evaluate the suitablity for hBMSCâ s encapsulation by cellular viability and biofunctionality by assessing the paracrine secretion of hBMSCâ s over time. The gradient hydrogels solutions were prepared by blend of macromolecules in one solution such as hyaluronic (HA) acid and collagen (Col) at different ratios. The gradient hydrogels were fabricated into cylindrical silicon moulds with higher ratio solutions assembled at the bottom of the mould and adding the two solutions consecutively on top of each other. The labelling of the macromolecules was performed to confirm the gradient through fluorescence microscopy. Additionally, AFM was conducted to assess the gradient hydrogels stiffness. Gradient hydrogels characterization was performed by HA and Col degradation assay, degree of crosslinking and stability. hBMSCâ s at P3 were encapsulated into each batch solution at 106 cells/ml solution and gradient hydrogels were produced as previously described. The hBMSCâ s were observed under confocal microscopy to assess viability by Live/Dead® staining. Cellular behaviour concerning proliferation and matrix deposition was also performed. Secretory cytokine measurement for pro-inflammatory and angiogenesis factors was carried out using ELISA. At genomic level, qPCR was carried out. The 3D gradient hydrogels platform made of different macromolecules showed to be a suitable environment for hBMSCâ s. The hBMSCâ s gradient hydrogels supported high cell survival and exhibited biofunctionality. Besides, the 3D gradient hydrogels demonstrated differentially secretion of pro-inflammatory and angiogenic factors by the encapsulated hBMSCâ s. References: 1. Vision-based hand gesture recognition is an area of active current research in computer vision and machine learning. Being a natural way of human interaction, it is an area where many researchers are working on, with the goal of making human computer interaction (HCI) easier and natural, without the need for any extra devices. So, the primary goal of gesture recognition research is to create systems, which can identify specific human gestures and use them, for example, to convey information. For that, vision-based hand gesture interfaces require fast and extremely robust hand detection, and gesture recognition in real time. Hand gestures are a powerful human communication modality with lots of potential applications and in this context we have sign language recognition, the communication method of deaf people. Sign lan- guages are not standard and universal and the grammars differ from country to coun- try. In this paper, a real-time system able to interpret the Portuguese Sign Language is presented and described. Experiments showed that the system was able to reliably recognize the vowels in real-time, with an accuracy of 99.4% with one dataset of fea- tures and an accuracy of 99.6% with a second dataset of features. Although the im- plemented solution was only trained to recognize the vowels, it is easily extended to recognize the rest of the alphabet, being a solid foundation for the development of any vision-based sign language recognition user interface system.

Aquest projecte tracta la implementació d’una eina gràfica multiplataforma de creació i edició de gramàtiques electròniques per representar el Llenguatge Natural. És una eina per lingüistes i projectes com Spanish FrameNet Project amb la quan poden representar fàcilment transductors en un format més visual, les transicions es representen en forma de “caixes”, i guardar els resultats. S’han implementat varies opcions per crear una eina còmode i personalitzable per l’usuari amb funcionalitats enfocades a les seves necessitats com importar/exportar autòmats des d’una Expressió Regular. Es tracta l’implementació de tots els components que s’han necessitat per crear la GUI així com la seva funcionalitat.
