The order-disorder transformation in the Ni-4.49 at.% Al alloy was studied using electrical resistivity measurements, microhardness measurements, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results confirmed the ordering behavior expected for Ni-Al dilute alloys and the suggested relation between resistivity changes and microhardness changes with antiferromagnetic spin ordering. The higher value obtained for the activation energy of vacancy migration was associated with a decrease in the Al concentration gradient near solute-depleted regions. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Microwave-assisted acid decomposition, direct dilution in kerosene, and oil-in-water emulsion were evaluated as lubricating oil pretreatment procedures for Cu, Cr, Fe, Ni, Pb, Sb, and Zn determination by High-Resolution Continuum Source Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (HR-CS FAAS). For wet digestion, results were compared with those obtained by Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (FAAS). The ultrasound probe used in emulsions sonication contaminated samples with Cr, although better results have been observed for the other six elements in this condition. In general, recovery percentages ranging from 81-106%(Cu), 80-107%(Cr), 85-114%(Fe), 82-116%(Ni), 86-117%(Pb), 85-115%(Sb), and 81-114%(Zn) were obtained. The HR-CS FAAS showed to be faster and more sensitive than FAAS.

In this work was studied the distribution of Cr, Ni, Cu, Cd and Pb in humic fractions with different molecular size. The HS were extracted from waters (AHS), surface sediments (HESS), interface water sediment (HSIS) and bottom sediment (HSBS) collected in the Anhumas surface water collection reservoir, located in the district of Araraquara - São Paulo State Brazil. The humic substances were extracted by procedures recommended by International Humic Substances Society (IHSS). After purification by dialysis, the humic substances were fractionated using a multistage tangential flow ultrafiltration system. The fractionation patterns of HS characterized a mass distribution relatively uniform among the fractions with different molecular sizes, with larger values in the fractions F-2 (20.8%) and F-4 (23.8%), Except for the ions Pb(II) and Cu(II), which presented relatively higher concentrations in the fractions F-2 and F-4, respectively. In general, chromium, nickel, cadmium and lead have similar distributions in the five fractions with larger and medium molecular sizes (F-1 to F-5). With relation to the mass distributions in the different humic substances fractions extracted from sediment samples collected at three depth, they presented 42-48% of HS in the fractions with larger molecular sizes (F-1 and F-2), 29-31% in the middle fractions (F-3 and F-4) and 13-20% in the fractions with smaller molecular sizes (F-5 and F-6). In general, the metallic ions presented distributions similar among the respective fractions F-1 to F-6, Exceptions for Pb(II) and M(II) in surface sediment with concentrations relatively smaller in the fractions F-2 and F-4, respectively,

A structural study of the thermal evolution of Ni0.69Cr0.31(OH)(2)(CO3)(0.155)(.)nH(2)O into NiO and tetragonal NiCr2O4 is reported. The characteristic structural parameters of the two coexisting crystalline phases, as well as their relative abundance, were determined by Rietveld refinement of powder x-ray diffraction (PXRD) patterns. The results of the simulations allowed us to elucidate the mechanism of the demixing process of the oxides. It is demonstrated that nucleation of a metastable nickel chromite within the common oxygen framework of the parent Cr-III-doped bunsenite is the initial step of the cationic redistribution. The role that trivalent cations play in the segregation of crystalline spinels is also discussed.

Oxycellulose (OXICEL) was packed in a glass column to pre-concentrate metal cations from aqueous solutions. The pre-concentrated metal cations are directly eluted from the column using 5.0 mL of 1.0 mol L(-1) hydrochloric acid. The optimum pre-concentration conditions are given and the retention efficency achieved is higher than 95%. The enrichment factor is 10 for sample volumes of 50 mL.

The electrochemical behavior of the annealed Cu-5wt.%Ni alloy in 0.5 M H2SO4 was studied by means of open-circuit potential (E-OCP) measurements, cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and quasi-stationary linear potential sweep. The hydrodynamics of the system was also studied. This material is constituted by a single a, phase. The anodic behavior of a Cu-Ni alloy in H2SO4 consists fundamentally on the electrodissolution of Cu, its main component, and the formation of a sulfur-containing passive layer. The presence of Ni decreases the rate of Cu oxidation, mostly at high positive potentials. The impedance spectra, obtained for the unrotating electrode, can be interpreted in terms of a simple charge-transfer reaction across a surface layer. When the electrode is rotated, the occurrence of an inductive loop evidenced the existence of an adsorbed layer. All the resistance estimated from the proposed equivalent circuits diminished with the electrode rotation rate, emphasizing the influence of ion transport in the overall electrode process. The system presented two anodic Tafel slopes: 40 mV dec(-1) for E < 255 mV and 67 mV dec(-1) for E > 275 mV. A Tafel slope of 40 mV dec(-1) evidences that copper dissolution can be interpreted in terms of the mechanism proposed by Mattsson and Bockris. The second Tafel suggests that at potentials more positive than 275 mV, copper dissolves according to a mechanism that considers the disproportionation of adsorbed Cu(1) species. The effects of bath composition and electroplating conditions on structure, morphology, and composition of amorphous Fe-Cr-P-Co deposits on AISI 1020 steel substrate, priorly plated with a thin Cu deposit, were investigated. The increase of charge density activates the inclusion of Cr in the deposit. However, above specific values of the charge density, which depend on the deposition current density, the Cr content in the deposit decreases. This Cr content decreasing is probably due to the significant hydrogen evolution with the increasing of deposition cur-rent and charge density. The effect of charge density on the content of Fe and Co is not clear. However, there is a tendency of increasing of Fe content and decreasing of Co content with the raising of current density. The Co is more easily deposited than the P, and its presence results in a more intense inhibition effect on the Cr deposition than the inhibition effect caused by P presence. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis showed that Co increasing in the Fe-Cr-P-Co alloys analyzed does not promote the susceptibility to microcracks, which led to a good quality deposit. The passive film of the Fe-Cr-P-Co alloy shows a high ability formation and high protective capacity, and the results obtained by current density of corrosion, j(cor), show that the deposit with addition of Co, Fe31Cr11P28Co30, presents a higher corrosion resistance than the deposit with addition of Ni, Fe54Cr21P20Ni5. Carboxymethylcellulose packed in to a glass column was used to pre-concentrate metallic cations from aqueous solutions. The pre-concentrated metal cations are directly eluted from the column using 5.0 mL of 1.0 mol L -1 hydrochloric acid. The optimum pre-concentration conditions are given (glass column, 16 cm length, 0.80 cm i.d., stationary phase height of 12 cm, flow-rate, 1.5 mL min -1). The recuperation efficiency achieved is greater than 95%, while the enrichment factor is 10 for 50 mL of solution (0.50 mg L -1 each).

A method is described for the simultaneous determination of Cd, Cr, Ni and Pb in mineral water samples by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry with a transversely heated graphite atomizer (THGA) and a longitudinal Zeeman-effect background correction system. The electrothermal behavior of analytes during pyrolysis and atomization steps was studied without modifier, in presence of 5 μg Pd and 3 μg Mg(NO3)2 and in presence of 50 μg NH4H2PO4 and 3 μg Mg(NO3)2. A volume of 20 μL of a 0.028 mol L -1 HNO3 solution containing 50 μg L-1 Ni and Pb, 10 μg L-1 Cr and 5 μg L-1 Cd was dispensed into the graphite tube at 20°C. The mixture palladium/magnesium was selected as the optimum modifier. The pyrolysis and atomization temperatures were fixed at 1000°C and 2300°C, respectively. The characteristic masses were calculated as 2.2 pg Cd, 10 pg Cr, 42 pg Ni and 66 pg Pb and the lifetime of the graphite tube was around 600 firings. Limits of detection based on integrated absorbance were 0.02 μg L-1Cd, 0.94 μg L-1 Cr, 0.45 μg L-1 Ni and 0.75 μg L-1 Pb, which exceeded the requirements of Brazilian Food Regulation that establish the maximum permissible level for Cd, Cr, Ni and Pb at 3 μg L-1, 50 μg L-1, 20 μg L-1 and 10 μg L-1, respectively. The recoveries of Cd, Cr, Ni and Pb added to mineral water samples varied within the 93-108%, 96-104%, 87-101% and 98-108% ranges, respectively. Results of analysis of standard reference materials (National Institute of Standards and Technology: 1640-Trace Elements in Natural Water; 1643d-Trace Elements in Water) were in agreement with certified values at the 95% confidence level.
