The four sites drilled on the Irish continental margin (Goban Spur) yielded sediments ranging in age from Holocene to Barremian. Most of the sediments were deposited in well oxygenated waters, and the small amounts of organic matter they contain are highly oxidized. During a few time intervals from the Cenomanian to earliest Turonian, however, the oxygen content of the bottom waters reached very low levels, resulting in the deposition of homogeneous or laminated black sediments containing from 0.5 to 11% total organic carbon (TOC). The original organic matter was of mixed marine and terrestrial origin. The oxidizing-reducing cycles represented by interbedded black and light sediments are probably a result of changes in both circulation and productivity. The black sediments at Sites 550, 551, and 549 were probably deposited near the lower end, middle, and upper end, respectively, of an expanded oxygen-minimum layer. The oil and gas source potential of the laminated black sediments is very good to excellent. The organic-carbon-lean sediments deposited under oxidizing conditions have no oil or gas source potential. The thermal maturity of all sediments is low.

After thirty years of vacillation, the Tanzanian government has made a firm decision to Swahilize its secondary education system. It has also embarked on an ambitious economic and social development programme (Vision 2025) to transform its peasant society into a modern agricultural community. However, there is a faction in Tanzania opposed to Kiswahili as the medium of education. Already many members of the middle and upper class their children to English medium primary schools to avoid the Kiswahili medium public schools and to prepare their children for the English medium secondary system presently in place. Within the education system, particularly at university level, there is a desire to maintain English as the medium of education. English is seen to provide access to the international scientific community, to cutting edge technology and to the global economy. My interest in this conflict of interests stems from several years' experience teaching English to students at Sokoine University of Agriculture. Students specialise in agriculture and are expected to work with the peasant population on graduation. The students experience difficulties studying in English and then find their Kiswahili skills insufficient to explain to farmers the new techniques and technologies that they have studied in English. They are hampered by a complex triglossic situation in which they use their mother tongue with family and friends, Kiswahili, the national language for early education and most public communication within Tanzania, and English for advanced studies. My aim in this thesis was - to study the language policy in Tanzania and see how it is understood and implemented; - to examine the attitudes towards the various languages and their various roles; - to investigate actual language behaviour in Tanzanian higher education. My conclusion is that the dysfunctionality of the present study has to be addressed. Diglossic public life in Tanzania has to be accommodated. The only solution appears to be a compromise, namely a bilingual education system which supports from all cases of society by using Kiswahili, together with an early introduction of English and its promotion as a privileged foreign language, so that Tanzania can continue to develop internally through Kiswahili and at the same time retain access to the globalising world through the medium of English.

This PhD thesis explores the ecological responses of bird species to glacial-interglacial transitions during the late Quaternary in the Western Palearctic, using multiple approaches and at different scales, enhancing the importance of the bird fossil record and quantitative methods to elucidate biotic trends in relation to long-term climate changes. The taxonomic and taphonomic analyses of the avian fossil assemblages from four Italian Middle and Upper Pleistocene sedimentary successions (Grotta del Cavallo, Grotta di Fumane, Grotta di Castelcivita, and Grotta di Uluzzo C) allowed us to reconstruct local-scale patterns in birds’ response to climate changes. These bird assemblages are characterized by the presence of temperate species and by the occasional presence of cold-dwelling species during glacials, related to range shifts. These local patterns are supported by those identified at the continental scale. In this respect, I mapped the present-day and LGM climatic envelopes of species with different climatic requirements. The results show a substantial stability in the range of temperate species and pronounced changes in the range of cold-dwelling species, supported by their fossil records. Therefore, the responses to climate oscillations are highly related to the thermal niches of investigated species. I also clarified the dynamics of the presence of boreal and arctic bird species in Mediterranean Europe, due to southern range shifts, during the glacial phases. After a reassessment of the reliability of the existing fossil evidence, I show that this phenomenon is not as common as previously thought, with important implications for the paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental significance of the targeted species. I have also been able to explore the potential of multivariate and rarefaction methods in the analyses of avian fossils from Grotta del Cavallo. These approaches helped to delineate the main drivers of taphonomic damages and the dynamics of species diversity in relation to climate-driven paleoenvironmental changes.

Drilling at Site 786, located in the center of the Izu-Bonin forearc basin, penetrated an apparently continuous section of middle Eocene/lower Oligocene volcaniclastic breccias and nannofossil oozes. Planktonic foraminiferal faunas underwent a gradual transition from relatively high-diversity middle Eocene through late Eocene tropical or warm-water assemblages to a cooler-water, less diverse assemblage during the early Oligocene. In the cosmopolitan benthic foraminiferal faunas, the major transition occurred during the early late Eocene. Middle Eocene benthic assemblages resembling the bathyal 'Lenticulina' fauna (characterized by Osangularia mexicana, Cibicidoides eocaenus, and several buliminid species) changed to an upper Eocene abyssal 'Globocassidulina subglobosa' fauna (characterized by Cibicidoides praemundulus, Globocassidulina subglobosa, Gyroidinoides girardanus, Oridorsalis umbonatus, and Siphonodosaria aculeata). Even though no large, abrupt faunal changes appear to have been associated with the assumed Eocene/Oligocene boundary, benthic species turnover continued through the late Eocene and into the early Oligocene. This resulted in a slightly lower diversity early Oligocene fauna dominated by three species: Laevidentalina sp., Bulimina jarvisi, and Gyroidinoides girardanus. The progression from a middle Eocene bathyal 'Lenticulina' fauna, rather than an abyssal 'Nuttallides truempyi' fauna, to an abyssal 'Globocassidulina subglobosa' fauna during the early late Eocene, suggests that a bathymetric deepening occurred at Site 786. Increased water depths may have resulted from tectonic subsidence.

Analysis of observed ozone profiles in Northern Hemisphere low and middle latitudes reveals the seasonal persistence of ozone anomalies in both the lower and upper stratosphere. Principal component analysis is used to detect that above 16 hPa the persistence is strongest in the latitude band 15–45°N, while below 16 hPa the strongest persistence is found over 45–60°N. In both cases, ozone anomalies persist through the entire year from November to October. The persistence of ozone anomalies in the lower stratosphere is presumably related to the wintertime ozone buildup with subsequent photochemical relaxation through summer, as previously found for total ozone. The persistence in the upper stratosphere is more surprising, given the short lifetime of Ox at these altitudes. It is hypothesized that this “seasonal memory” in the upper stratospheric ozone anomalies arises from the seasonal persistence of transport-induced wintertime NOy anomalies, which then perturb the ozone chemistry throughout the rest of the year. This hypothesis is confirmed by analysis of observations of NO2, NOx, and various long-lived trace gases in the upper stratosphere, which are found to exhibit the same seasonal persistence. Previous studies have attributed much of the year-to-year variability in wintertime extratropical upper stratospheric ozone to the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation (QBO) through transport-induced NOy (and hence NO2) anomalies but have not identified any statistical connection between the QBO and summertime ozone variability. Our results imply that through this “seasonal memory,” the QBO has an asynchronous effect on ozone in the low to midlatitude upper stratosphere during summer and early autumn.

Shallow-water larger foraminifers have been recovered at two drill sites on the eastern Maldive Ridge. Despite the poor recovery in Hole 715A, a rather diversified larger benthic foraminifer assemblage allowed us to date the initiation of a carbonate platform, resting on volcanic basement, as late early Eocene. Several age-diagnostic species belonging to the genera Alveolina, Nummulites, Orbitolites, and Discocyclina have been identified. The assemblages may be attributable to the upper part of the Nummulites burdigalensis cantabricus Zone and/or to the lower part of the Nummulites campesinus Zone and to the Alveolina dainellii (upper part) and/or to the A. violae (lower part) zones. The carbonate platform had a very short life (a few hundred thousand years) and rapidly sank below the euphotic zone, as testified by the occurrence of several species of planktonic foraminifers associated with redeposited reef-derived skeletal debris, especially discocyclinids, in the upper part of the sequence. Among the planktonic foraminifers, the presence of Planorotalites palmeri, which has a range confined to the lower portion of the late early Eocene Zone P9, implies that the platform was drowned before the end of the early Eocene. At Hole 714A, the occurrence of several shallow-water foraminifer genera, such as Nummulites (N. fabianii gr.), Discocyclina, Fabiania, Heterostegina, and Operculina (O. gomezi), in pebbles derived from turbidite beds interbedded within late Oligocene pelagic sediments, allows us to suggest that a carbonate platform, possibly reduced in size, was still growing in the Maldive Ridge area after the late early Eocene time. The erosional event, responsible for the redeposition of middle to late Eocene reef-derived skeletal debris, is apparently coeval with the global sea-level fall recorded in late Oligocene Zone P22.

Cores from Sites 689 and 690 of Ocean Drilling Program Leg 113 provide the most continuous Paleocene and Eocene sequence yet recovered by deep sea drilling in the high latitudes of the Southern Ocean. The nannofossil-foraminifer oozes and chalks recovered from Maud Rise at 65°S in the Weddell Sea provide a unique opportunity for biostratigraphic study of extremely high southern latitude carbonate sediments. The presence of warm water index fossils such as the discoasters and species of the Tribrachiatus plexus facilitate the application of commonly used low latitude calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphic zonation schemes for the upper Paleocene and lower Eocene intervals. In the more complete section at Site 690, Okada and Bukry Zones CP1 through CP10 can be identified for the most part with the possible exception of Zone CP3. Several hiatuses are present in the sequence at Site 689 with the most notable being at the Cretaceous/Tertiary and Paleocene/Eocene boundaries. Though not extremely diverse, the assemblage of discoasters in the upper Paleocene and lower Eocene calcareous oozes is indicative of warm, relatively equable climates during that interval. A peak in discoaster diversity in uppermost Paleocene sediments (Zone CP8) corresponds to a negative shift in 5180 values. Associated coccolith assemblages are quite characteristic of high latitudes with abundant Chiasmolithus, Prinsius, and Toweius. Climatic cooling is indicated for middle Eocene sediments by assemblages that contain very abundant Reticulofenestra, lack common discoasters and sphenoliths and are much less diverse overall. Two new taxa are described, Biscutum? neocoronum n. sp. and Amithalithina sigmundii n. gen., n. sp.

A high-resolution stratigraphy is essential toward deciphering climate variability in detail and understanding causality arguments of events in earth history. Because the highly dynamic middle to late Eocene provides a suitable testing ground for carbon cycle models for a waning warm world, an accurate time scale is needed to decode climate-driving mechanisms. Here we present new results from ODP Site 1260 (Leg 207) which covers a unique expanded middle Eocene section (magnetochrons C18r to C20r, late Lutetian to early Bartonian) of the tropical western Atlantic including the chron C19r transient hyperthermal event and the Middle Eocene Climate Optimum (MECO). To establish a detailed cyclostratigraphy we acquired a distinctive iron intensity records by XRF scanning Site 1260 cores. We revise the shipboard composite section, establish a cyclostratigraphy and use the exceptional eccentricity modulated precession cycles for orbital tuning. The new astrochronology revises the age of magnetic polarity chrons C19n to C20n, validates the position of very long eccentricity minima at 40.2 and 43.0 Ma in the orbital solutions, and extends the Astronomically Tuned Geological Time Scale back to 44 Ma. For the first time the new data provide clear evidence for an orbital pacing of the chron C19r event and a likely involvement of the very long eccentricity cycle contributing to the evolution of the MECO.

ODP Leg 119 drilled 11 sites on the Kerguelen Plateau (southern Indian Ocean) and Prydz Bay (East Antarctica). Upper Pliocene through Quaternary sediments were recovered at Site 736 on the northern Kerguelen Plateau; calcareous nannofossils occurred in only a few samples. Over 700 m of middle Eocene through Quaternary sediments was cored at Site 737 on the northern Kerguelen Plateau, and calcareous nannofossils are abundant in the middle Eocene through the middle Miocene sediments. Nearly 500 m of sediments ranging from the lower Turanian to the Quaternary was recovered at Site 738 on the southern Kerguelen Plateau; calcareous nannofossils are abundant from the Miocene downward. Calcareous nannofossils are also abundant in the upper Eocene through Miocene section from Site 744 on the southern Kerguelen Plateau. Except for Core 119-746A-13H, the Neogene sequences drilled at deep-water Sites 745 and 746 off the southern Kerguelen Plateau are devoid of calcareous nannofossils. Occurrences of calcareous nannofossils were generally rare and sporadic at Sites 739 and 742 in Prydz Bay and suggest that the diamictite sequences recovered is as old as middle Eocene-early Oligocene age. Other sites drilled in Prydz Bay (Sites 740, 741, and 743) did not yield calcareous nannofossils. Species diversity of calcareous nannofossils was low (about a dozen) in the southern Indian Ocean in the Late Cretaceous. High-latitude nanno floral characteristics are apparent after the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary extinctions. Cold climatic conditions limited Oligocene calcareous nannofossil assemblages to fewer than a dozen species, and extinctions of species generally were not compensated by originations of new species. Only a few species of calcareous nannofossils were found in the Miocene sequences, in which Coccolithuspelagicus and one or two species of Reticulofenestra exhibit extreme (0%-100%) fluctuations in assemblage dominance, and these fluctuations may reflect rapid fluctuations in the surface-water temperatures. Further deterioration of climate in the late Neogene essentially excluded calcareous nannoplankton from the Southern Ocean. Significantly warmer water conditions during part of the early-middle Pleistocene were inferred by a few lower-middle Pleistocene calcareous nannofossil species found on the Kerguelen Plateau. The calcareous nannofossil zonation of Roth (1978 doi:10.2973/dsdp.proc.44.134.1978) can be applied to the Upper Cretaceous section recovered at Site 738, and the zonation of Okada and Bukry (1980 doi:10.1016/0377-8398(80)90016-X) can be applied without much difficulty to the Paleocene to middle Eocene sequences from the Kerguelen Plateau. However, some conventional upper Paleogene markers are not useful for southern high latitudes, whereas a few nonconventional species events are useful for subdividing the upper Paleogene sequences. The latter species events include the first occurrence (FO) of Reticulofenestra reticulata, the FO and last occurrence (LO) of Reticulofenestra oamaruensis, the LO of Isthmolithus recurvus, and the LO of Chiasmolithus altus. As the Neogene sequences from the southern Indian Ocean contain only a few long-ranging, cold-water species, or are devoid of coccoliths, calcareous nannofossil zonations remain virtually unworkable for the Neogene in the high-latitude southern Indian Ocean as in other sectors of the Southern Ocean.
