The antioxidant potency of high/low molecular weight quatemary chitosan derivatives was investigated employing various established systems in vitro, such as superoxide (O-2(center dot-)) and hydroxyl (center dot OH) radicals scavenging, reducing power and iron ion chelating. As expected, we obtained several satisfying results, as follow: firstly, low molecular weight quaternary chitosan had stronger scavenging effect on O-2(center dot-) and center dot OH than high molecular weight quaternary chitosan. Secondly, the reducing power of low molecular weight quaternary chitosan was more pronounced than that of high molecular weight quaternary chitosan. Thirdly, ferrous ion chelating potency were showed to increase first and decrease afterwards with increasing concentration for two kinds of quaternary chitosans, namely, they have not concentration-dependence. However, the scavenging rate and reducing power of high and low molecular weight quaternary chitosans increased with their increasing conc centrations, and hence were concentration-dependent. The Li-ion battery has for a number of years been a key factor that has enabled an ever increasing number of modern consumer devices, while in recent years has also been sought to power a range of emerging electric and hybrid electric vehicles. Due to their importance and popularity, a number of characteristics of Li-ion batteries have been subjected to intense work aimed at radical improvement. Although electrode material selection intrinsically defines characteristics like maximum capacity or voltage, engineering of the electrode structure may yield significant improvements to the lifetime performance of the battery, which would not be available if the material was used in its bulk form. The body of work presented in this thesis describes the relationship between the structure of electrochemically active materials and the course of the electrochemical processes occurring within the electrode. Chapter one describes the motivation behind the research presented herein. Chapter two serves to highlight a number of key advancements which have been made and detailed in the literature over recent years, pertaining to the use of nanostructured materials in Li-ion technology. Chapter three details methods and techniques applied in developing the body of work presented in this thesis. Chapter four details structural, molecular and electrochemical characteristics of tin oxide nanoparticle based electrodes, with particular emphasis on the relationship between the size distribution and the electrode performance. Chapter five presents findings of structural, electrochemical and optical study of indium oxide nanoparticles grown on silicon by molecular beam epitaxy. In chapter 6, tin oxide inverted opal electrodes are investigated for the conduct of the electrochemical performance of the electrodes under varying rate of change of potential. Chapter 7 presents the overall conclusions drawn from the results presented in this thesis, coupled with an indication of potential future work which may be explored further.

Results are presented for e(+) scattering by H- in the impact energy range 0less than or equal toE(0)less than or equal to10 eV. These include integrated cross sections for Ps formation in the 1s, 2s, and 2p states, as well as in an aggregate of states with ngreater than or equal to3, and for direct ionization. Differential cross sections for Ps formation in the 1s, 2s, and 2p states are also exhibited. The calculations are based on a coupled pseudostate approach employing 19 Ps pseudostates centered on the e(+). It is found that Ps formation in the 2p state dominates that in the 1s or 2s states below 8 eV, that formation in states with ngreater than or equal to3 exceeds the sum of the n=1 and n=2 cross sections above 2.5 eV, and that direct ionization outstrips total Ps formation above 6.3 eV. The threshold law (E-0-->0) for exothermic Ps formation, which includes the cases Ps(1s), Ps(2s), and Ps(2p), is shown to be 1/E-0.

We have performed a kinematically complete experiment and calculations on single ionization in 100 MeV/amu C6+ + He collisions. For electrons ejected into the scattering plane (defined by the initial and final projectile momentum vectors) our first- and higher-order calculations are in good agreement with the data. In the plane perpendicular to the scattering plane and containing the initial projectile axis a strong forward-backward asymmetry is observed. In this plane both the first-order and the higher-order calculations do not provide good agreement neither with the data nor amongst each other.

The effects of electron correlation and second-order terms on theoretical total cross sections of transfer ionization in collisions of the helium atom with fast H+, He2+ and Li3+ ions are studied and reported. The total cross sections are calculated using highly correlated wavefunctions with expansion of the transition amplitude in the Born series through the second order. The results of these calculations are in sensible agreement with experimental data.

Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations have been performed for the first time on the room-temperature organic ionic liquid dimethyl imidazolium chloride [DMIM][Cl] using density functional theory. The aim is to compare the local liquid structure with both that obtained from two different classical force fields and from neutron scattering experiments. The local structure around the cation shows significant differences compared to both the classical calculations and the neutron results. In particular, and unlike in the gas-phase ion pair, chloride ions tend to be located near a ring C-H proton in a position suggesting hydrogen bonding. The results are used to suggest ways in which the classical potentials may be improved.

The spectroscopy and metastability of the carbon dioxide doubly charged ion, the CO22+ dication, have been studied with photoionization experiments: time-of-flight photoelectron photoelectron coincidence (TOF-PEPECO), threshold photoelectrons coincidence (TPEsCO), and threshold photoelectrons and ion coincidence (TPEsCO ion coincidence) spectroscopies. Vibrational structure is observed in TOF-PEPECO and TPEsCO spectra of the ground and first two excited states. The vibrational structure is dominated by the symmetric stretch except in the TPEsCO spectrum of the ground state where an antisymmetric stretch progression is observed. All three vibrational frequencies are deduced for the ground state and symmetric stretch and bending frequencies are deduced for the first two excited states. Some vibrational structure of higher electronic states is also observed. The threshold for double ionization of carbon dioxide is reported as 37.340+/-0.010 eV. The fragmentation of energy selected CO22+ ions has been investigated with TPEsCO ion coincidence spectroscopy. A band of metastable states from similar to38.7 to similar to41 eV above the ground state of neutral CO2 has been observed in the experimental time window of similar to0.1-2.3 mus with a tendency towards shorter lifetimes at higher energies. It is proposed that the metastability is due to slow spin forbidden conversion from bound excited singlet states to unbound continuum states of the triplet ground state. Another result of this investigation is the observation of CO++O+ formation in indirect dissociative double photoionization below the threshold for formation of CO22+. The threshold for CO++O+ formation is found to be 35.56+/-0.10 eV or lower, which is more than 2 eV lower than previous measurements. (C) 2005 American Institute of Physics.

In 'Charge transfer from the negative-energy continuum: alternative mechanism for pair production in relativistic atomic collisions', Eichler (1995 Phys. Rev. Lett. 75 3653) proposes an alternative mechanism for capture by pair production, and from it derives an analytic expression for the total cross section with a surprisingly strong energy dependence. We show that, in fact, there is no alternative mechanism; rather the above mechanism may be more transparently viewed as an ionization-like transition in one centre with inclusion of continuum distortion by the second centre. We further show that to Centre the initial and final states on the target and projectile leads to confusion in the momentum transfer vectors, and hence, respectively that the alleged high-energy behaviour is erroneous.

The continuum distorted-wave eikonal initial-state (CDW-EIS) theory of Crothers and McCann (J Phys B 1983, 16, 3229) used to describe ionization in ion-atom collisions is generalized (G) to GCDW-EIS to incorporate the azimuthal angle dependence of each CDW in the final-state wave function. This is accomplished by the analytic continuation of hydrogenic-like wave functions from below to above threshold, using parabolic coordinates and quantum numbers including magnetic quantum numbers, thus providing a more complete set of states. At impact energies lower than 25 keVu(-1), the total ionization cross-section falls off, with decreasing energy, too quickly in comparison with experimental data. The idea behind and motivation for the GCDW-EIS model is to improve the theory with respect to experiment by including contributions from nonzero magnetic quantum numbers. We also therefore incidentally provide a new derivation of the theory of continuum distorted waves for zero magnetic quantum numbers while simultaneously generalizing it. We report results of classical molecular-dynamics simulations of bcc and beta-Ta thin films. Thermal PVD film growth, surface roughness, argon ion bombardment, phase stability and transformation, vacancy and adatom diffusion, and thermal relaxation kinetics are discussed. Distinct differences between the two structures are observed, including a complex vacancy diffusion mechanism in beta-Ta. Embedded atom method potentials, which were fitted to bcc properties, have been used to model the Ta-Ta interactions. In order to verify the application of these potentials to the more complex beta-Ta structure, we have also performed density functional theory calculations. Results and implications of these calculations are discussed.

We investigate the role of dynamic polarization of the target electrons in the process of recombination of electrons with multicharged ions (polarizational recombination). Numerical calculations carried out for a number of Ni- and Ne-like ions demonstrate that the inclusion of polarizational recombination leads to a noticeable increase (up to 30%) in the cross sections for incident electron energies outside the regions of dielectronic resonances. We also present a critical analysis of theoretical approaches used by other authors to describe the phenomenon of polarizational recombination.

We have analysed the electronic wave functions from an ab initio simulation of the ionic liquid (room temperature molten salt) dimethyl imidazolium chloride ([dmim][Cl] or [C1mim][Cl]) using localized Wannier orbitals. This allows us to assign electron density to individual ions. The probability distributions of the ionic dipole moments for an isolated ion and for ions in solution are compared. The liquid environment is found to polarize the cation by about 0.7 D and to increase the amplitude of the fluctuations in the dipole moments of both cation and anion. The relative changes in nuclear and electronic contributions are shown. The implications for classical force fields are discussed.

Correlated electron-ion dynamics (CEID) is an extension of molecular dynamics that allows us to introduce in a correct manner the exchange of energy between electrons and ions. The formalism is based on a systematic approximation: small amplitude moment expansion. This formalism is extended here to include the explicit quantum spread of the ions and a generalization of the Hartree-Fock approximation for incoherent sums of Slater determinants. We demonstrate that the resultant dynamical equations reproduce analytically the selection rules for inelastic electron-phonon scattering from perturbation theory, which control the mutually driven excitations of the two interacting subsystems. We then use CEID to make direct numerical simulations of inelastic current-voltage spectroscopy in atomic wires, and to exhibit the crossover from ionic cooling to heating as a function of the relative degree of excitation of the electronic and ionic subsystems.

Scorpion venoms are a particularly rich source of neurotoxic proteins/peptides that interact in a highly specific fashion with discrete subtypes of ion channels in excitable and non-excitable cells. Here we have employed a recently developed technique to effect molecular cloning and structural characterization of a novel putative potassium channel-blocking toxin from the same sample of venom from the North African scorpion, Androctonus amoreuxi. The deduced precursor open-reading frame is composed of 59 amino acid residues that consists of a signal peptide of approximately 22 amino acid residues followed by a mature toxin of 37 amino acid residues. The mature toxin contains two functionally important residues (Lys27 and Tyr36), constituting a functional dyad motif that may be critical for potassium channel-blocking activity that can be affirmed from structural homologs as occurring in the venoms from other species of Androctonus scorpions. Parallel proteomic/transcriptomic studies can thus be performed on the same scorpion venom sample without sacrifice of the donor animal.
