Morphology and electrochemical performance of mixed crystallographic phase titania nanotubes for prospective application as anode in rechargeable lithium ion batteries are discussed. Hydrothermally grown nanotubes of titania (TiO2) and carbon-titania (C-TiO2) comprise a mixture of both anatase and TiO2 (B) crystallographic phases. The first cycle capacity (at Current rate = 10 mAg(-1)) for bare TiO2 nanotubes was 355 mAhg(-1) (approximately 1.06 Li), which is higher than both the theoretical capacity (335 mAhg(-1)) and the reported values for pure anatase and TiO2 (B) nanotubes. Higher capacity is attributed to it combination of the presence of mixed crystallographic phases of titania and trivial size effects. The surface area of bare TiO2 nanotubes was very high at 340 m(2) g(-1). C-TiO2 nanotubes showed a slightly lower first-cycle specific capacity of 307 mAhg(-1), but the irreversible capacity loss in the first cycle decreased by half compared to bare TiO2 nanotubes. The C-TiO2 nanotubes also showed a better rate capability, that is, higher capacities compared to bare TiO2 nanotubes in the Current range 0.1-2 Ag-1. Enhanced rate capability in the case of C-TiO2 is attributed to the efficient percolation of electrons as well its to the decrease in the anatase phase.

Room temperature, magnesium ion conducting binary molten electrolyte consisting of acetamide and magnesium perchlorate has been prepared and characterized. The molten liquid is very stable and shows high ionic conductivity, of the order of several mS cm(-1) at 25 degrees C with other favourable physicochemical properties. Vibrational spectroscopic studies reveal that the free ion concentration is higher than that of ion pairs and aggregates in the melt. The electrochemical reversibility of magnesium deposition and dissolution is demonstrated using voltammetry and impedance studies. Preliminary studies on rechargeable batteries assembled using gamma-MnO2 and Mg metal as the electrodes together with the molten electrolyte show high discharge capacity.

There has recently been a rapidly increasing interest in solar powered UAVs. With the emergence of high power density batteries, long range and low-power micro radio devices, airframes, and powerful micro-processors and motors, small/micro UAVs have become applicable in civilian applications such as remote sensing, mapping, traffic monitoring, search and rescue. The Green Falcon UAV is an innovative project from Queensland University of Technology and has been developed and tested during these past years. It comprises a wide range of subsystems to be analyses and studied such as Solar Panel Cells, Gas sensor, Aerodynamics of the wing and others. Previous test however, resulted in damage to the solar cells and some of the subsystems including motor and ESC. This report describes the repair and verification process followed to improve the efficiency of the Green Falcon UAV. The report shows some of the results obtained in previous static and flight tests as well as some of recommendations.

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are considered as complementary alternatives to lithium-ion batteries for grid energy storage due to the abundance of sodium. However, low capacity, poor rate capability, and cycling stability of existing anodes significantly hinder the practical applications of SIBs. Herein, ultrathin two-dimensional SnS2 nanosheets (3-4 nm in thickness) are synthesized via a facile refluxing process toward enhanced sodium storage. The SnS2 nanosheets exhibit a high apparent diffusion coefficient of Na+ and fast sodiation/desodiation reaction kinetics. In half-cells, the nanosheets deliver a high reversible capacity of 733 mAh g-1 at 0.1 A g-1, which still remains up to 435 mAh g-1 at 2 A g-1. The cell has a high capacity retention of 647 mA h g-1 during the 50th cycle at 0.1 A g-1, which is by far the best for SnS2, suggesting that nanosheet morphology is beneficial to improve cycling stability in addition to rate capability. The SnS2 nanosheets also show encouraging performance in a full cell with a Na3V2(PO4)3 cathode. In addition, the sodium storage mechanism is investigated by ex situ XRD coupled with high-resolution TEM. The high specific capacity, good rate capability, and cycling durability suggest that SnS2 nanosheets have great potential working as anodes for high-performance SIBs. © 2015 American Chemical Society.

Surfactant anion intercalated hydroxy salts of copper and cobalt of the formula M(OH)(2-x)(surf)(x)center dot mH(2)O [M = Cu, Co; surf = dodecyl sulfate. dodecyl benzene sulfonate. and x = 0.5 for Cu and 0.67 for Co] delaminate readily in 1-butanol to give translucent colloidal dispersions that are stable for months. The extent of delamination and the colloidal dispersion observed in these solids is higher than what had been observed for layered double hydroxides. The dispersions yield the corresponding nanoparticulate oxides on solvothermal decomposition. While the copper hydroxy salt forms similar to 300 nm dendrimer-like CuO nanostructures comprising nanorods of similar to 10 nm diameter, the cobalt analogue forms similar to 20 nm superparamagnetic particles of Co3O4.

Objective: To determine the extent to which different strength training exercises selectively activate the commonly injured biceps femoris long head (BFLH) muscle. Methods: This two-part observational study recruited 24 recreationally active males. Part 1 explored the amplitudes and the ratios of lateral to medial hamstring (BF/MH) normalised electromyography (nEMG) during the concentric and eccentric phases of 10 common strength training exercises. Part 2 used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to determine the spatial patterns of hamstring activation during two exercises which i) most selectively, and ii) least selectively activated the BF in part 1. Results: Eccentrically, the largest BF/MH nEMG ratio was observed in the 45° hip extension exercise and the lowest was observed in the Nordic hamstring (NHE) and bent-knee bridge exercises. Concentrically, the highest BF/MH nEMG ratio was observed during the lunge and 45° hip extension and the lowest was observed for the leg curl and bent-knee bridge. fMRI revealed a greater BFLH to semitendinosus activation ratio in the 45° hip extension than the NHE (p<0.001). The T2 increase after hip extension for BFLH, semitendinosus and semimembranosus muscles were greater than that for BFSH (p<0.001). During the NHE, the T2 increase was greater for the semitendinosus than for the other hamstrings (p≤0.002). Conclusion: This investigation highlights the non-uniformity of hamstring activation patterns in different tasks and suggests that hip extension exercise more selectively activates the BFLH while the NHE preferentially recruits the semitendinosus. These findings have implications for strength training interventions aimed at preventing hamstring injury.

We find sandwiched metal dimers CB5H6M–MCB5H6 (M = Si, Ge, Sn) which are minima in the potential energy surface with a characteristic M–M single bond. The NBO analysis and the M–M distances (Å) (2.3, 2.44 and 2.81 for M = Si, Ge, Sn) indicate substantial M–M bonding. Formal generation of CB5H6M–MCB5H6 has been studied theoretically. Consecutive substitution of two boron atoms in B7H−27 by M (Si, Ge, Sn) and carbon, respectively followed by dehydrogenation may lead to our desired CB5H6M–MCB5H6. We find that the slip distorted geometry is preferred for MCB5H7 and its dehydrogenated dimer CB5H6M–MCB5H6. The slip-distortion of M–M bond in CB5H6M–MCB5H6 is more than the slip distortion of M–H bond in MCB5H7. Molecular orbital analysis has been done to understand the slip distortion. Larger M–M bending (CB5H6M–MCB5H6) in comparison with M–H bending (MCB5H7) is suspected to be encouraged by stabilization of one of the M–M π bonding MO’s. Preference of M to occupy the apex of pentagonal skeleton of MCB5H7 over its icosahedral analogue MCB10H11 has been observed.

Room temperature, magnesium ion-conducting molten electrolytes are prepared using a combination of acetamide, urea and magnesium triflate or magnesium perchlorate. The molten liquids show high ionic conductivity, of the order of mS cm(-1) at 298 K. Vibrational spectroscopic studies based on triflate/perchlorate bands reveal that the free ion concentration is higher than that of ion-pairs and aggregates in the melt. Electrochemical reversibility of magnesium deposition and dissolution is demonstrated using cyclic voltammetry and impedance studies. The transport number of Mg2+ ion determined by means of a combination of d.c. and ac. techniques is similar to 0.40. Preliminary studies on the battery characteristics reveal good capacity for the magnesium rechargeable cell and open up the possibility of using this unique class of acetamide-based room temperature molten electrolytes in secondary magnesium batteries. We present a search for standard model (SM) Higgs boson production using ppbar collision data at sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV, collected with the CDF II detector and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.8 fb-1. We search for Higgs bosons produced in all processes with a significant production rate and decaying to two W bosons. We find no evidence for SM Higgs boson production and place upper limits at the 95% confidence level on the SM production cross section (sigma(H)) for values of the Higgs boson mass (m_H) in the range from 110 to 200 GeV. These limits are the most stringent for m_H > 130 GeV and are 1.29 above the predicted value of sigma(H) for mH = 165 GeV.

Layered LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2, which is isostructural with LiCoO2, is considered as a potential cathode material for Li-ion batteries. Submicrometer sized porous particles are useful for high discharge rates. The present work involves a synthesis of submicrometer sized porous particles of LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 using a triblock copolymer as a soft template. The precursor obtained from the reaction is heated at different temperatures between 600 and 900 degrees C for 6 h to get the final product samples. The compound attains increased crystallinity with an increase in the temperature of preparation. However, there is a decrease in the surface area and also in the porosity of the sample. Nevertheless, the LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 sample prepared at 900 degrees C exhibits a high rate capability and stable capacity retention on cycling. The electrochemical performance of LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 prepared in the absence of the polymer template is inferior to that of the sample prepared in the presence of the polymer template. Lead acid batteries are used in hybrid vehicles and telecommunications power supply. For reliable operation of these systems, an indication of state of charge of battery is essential. To determine the state of charge of battery, current integration method combined with open circuit voltage, is being implemented. To reduce the error in the current integration method the dependence of available capacity as a function of discharge current is determined. The current integration method is modified to incorporate this factor. The experimental setup built to obtain the discharge characterstics of the battery is presented.

For hybrid electric vehicles the batteries and the drive dc-link may be at different voltages. The batteries are at low voltage to obtain higher volumetric efficiencies and the dc-link is at higher voltage to have higher efficiency on the motor side. Therefore a power interface between the batteries and the drive's dc-link is essential. This power interface should handle power flow from battery to motor, motor to battery, external genset to battery and grid to battery. This paper proposes a multi power port topology which is capable of handling multiple power sources and still maintains simplicity and features like obtaining any gain, wide load variations, lower output current ripple and capability of parallel battery energy due to the modular structure. The development and testing of a bi-directional fly-back DC-DC converter for hybrid electric vehicle is described in this paper. Simple hysteresis voltage control is used for DC link voltage regulation. The experimental results are presented to show the working of the proposed converter.
